Gadkari attends Iran President’s swearing-in ceremony

Minister Nitin Gadkari conveyed good wishes from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to President Pezeshkian on assuming office….reports Asian Lite News

The Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, attended the swearing-in ceremony of the President of Iran, Masoud Pezeshkian, on Tuesday.

The Union Minister represented the Indian government at the Iranian president’s swearing-in ceremony.

Minister Nitin Gadkari conveyed good wishes from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to President Pezeshkian on assuming office.

During Gadkari’s interactions in Iran, both sides positively assessed the state of bilateral relations, including cooperation on the development of Chabahar Port.

Moreover, both sides underscored that Chabahar Port would contribute to strengthening bilateral and regional trade.

It would further provide access to landlocked Afghanistan and Central Asian countries to regional and global markets.

Snap elections were held in Iran after President Ebrahim Raisi died in a chopper crash along with Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and other officials in Iran’s remote northwest in May.

Earlier this month, reformist candidate Masoud Pezeshkian secured a win in the presidential elections in Iran, CNN reported, citing Press TV.

Out of the 30.5 million votes counted in the runoff, Pezeshkian received over 16.3 million votes, while his ultraconservative rival Saeed Jalili got more than 13.5 million votes.

According to election headquarters under the auspices of the interior ministry, the voter turnout was 49.8 per cent in Iran’s presidential elections, the report said.

Pezeshkian was elected in a second round of voting after he received the highest number of votes in the first round, ahead of Jalili. The first round witnessed the lowest turnout for a presidential election since Iran was established in 1979.

Pezeshkian was sworn in, in the presence of dignitaries from nearly 90 countries, and announced a policy of “constructive and effective” engagement with the world while offering his country’s participation in solving regional and global issues.

In his address to the gathering after his swearing-in, Pezeshkian urged the world “to seize the unique opportunity to solve regional and global problems with the participation of a powerful, peace-seeking, and dignified Iran”, local Iranian news agencies reported.

“We will seek constructive and effective engagement with the world based on the principles of dignity, wisdom and expediency,” he said.

He stressed his administration’s readiness to continue negotiations with major global powers in order to remove the anti-Iran sanctions, reminding the West and Washington that Iran’s nuclear programme is peaceful as it has been verified by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

He stressed that Iran remained committed to its commitments under the nuclear deal.

“Pressure and sanctions do not work (in dealing with Iran),” Pezeshkian said in a remark aimed at the Western powers and called on them to “show respect to the noble Iranian nation”.

Among those present at the ceremony were Tajikistan President Emomali Rahmon, and Prime Ministers Irakli Kobakhidze of Georgia, Nikol Pashinyan of Armenia, Hussein Arnous of Syria, and Manuel Marrero Cruz of Cuba.

Russia’s Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin, Turkmenistan’s Deputy Prime Minister Rashid Meredov, South African Foreign Minister Ronald Lamola, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Ahmed Mohamed Abdel Ati, Saudi Arabian Minister of Interior Abdulaziz bin Saud bin Naif, Bahraini Foreign Minister Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani and European Union’s deputy foreign policy chief Enrique Mora were also present.

Pakistan Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar led his country’s delegation.

Among other foreign leaders that were present were Qatar’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Sultan bin Saad bin Sultan Al Muraikhi, Kazakhstan Senate Chairman Ashimbayev Maulen Sagathanuly, Malaysia’s House of Representatives Speaker Tan Sri Dato Johari bin Abdul, Uzbekistan’s Oliy Majlis Speaker Nuriddin Ismoilov, and Senegal National Assembly’s President Amadou Mame Diop.

Hamas’ Head of the Political Bureau, Ismail Haniyeh, Hezbollah’s Deputy Secretary General Sheikh Naim Qassem, Palestinian Islamic Jihad Movement Secretary-General Ziad al-Nakhalah, and Yemen’s Ansarullah spokesman Mohammad Abdul Salam also participated in the ceremony.

Hamas Leader Haniyeh Assassinated

The head of Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas),
Ismail Haniyeh was in Tehran to attend the swearing-in ceremony of the Iranian President-elect, Masoud Pezeshkian…reports Asian Lite News

Hamas Political Bureau chief Ismail Haniyeh has been killed in an attack in Iran’s capital, Tehran, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said on Wednesday, Press TV reported.

In a statement to Meher News Agency the IRGC said that Ismail Haniyeh and one of his bodyguards were killed after their residence was targeted in Tehran.

“With condolences to the heroic nation of Palestine and the Islamic nation and the combatants of the Resistance Front and the noble nation of Iran, this morning (Wednesday) the residence of Ismail Haniyeh, the head of the political office of the Islamic Resistance of Hamas, was hit in Tehran, and following this incident, he and one of his bodyguards were martyred,” the statement read.

Earlier on Tuesday, Iran’s Supreme Leader, Seyyed Ali Hosseini Khamenei, held a meeting with Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh. Khamenei took to social media platform X to share pictures of his meeting with Haniyeh.

In a post on X, Khamenei’s office stated, “Imam Khamenei met with Mr. Ismail Haniyah, head of the political bureau of the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement Hamas, and Mr. Ziyad al-Nakhalah, the Secretary General of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad Movement.”

In its reply to the post, the Israel Defence Forces posted “Did someone ask for a photo-op of Iran and the leaders of their proxies? Iran’s Khamenei met with Hamas’ Ismail Haniyah and the Islamic Jihad’s Ziyad-al Nakhalah — two of the terrorist organizations who have been attempting to kill Israelis using weapons made and funded by Iran. We can only assume the topics of conversation included how to spend more Iranian money to kill Israelis while wishing Hezbollah’s Nasrallah could join them.”

Ismail Haniyeh who is based in Qatar, was in Tehran to attend the swearing-in ceremony of the Iranian President-elect, Masoud Pezeshkian, according to a Press TV report.

Earlier in April, three sons of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh were killed in an air strike carried out by the Israeli Air Force on Wednesday, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) informed. The three sons of the Hamas leader, who were confirmed dead by the Israeli forces, were identified as Amir Haniyeh, a cell commander in the Hamas military wind and Mohammad and Hazem Haniyeh.”

In a post on X, IDF on April 10 stated, “IAF aircraft struck Amir Haniyeh, a cell commander in the Hamas military wing, and Mohammad and Hazem Haniyeh, both Hamas military operatives, in central Gaza today. The IDF confirms that the 3 operatives are the sons of Ismail Haniyeh, the chairman of Hamas’ political bureau.”

Meanwhile, the Israel Defence forces also announced that they had eliminated Fuad Shukr “Sayyid Muhsan”, Hezbollah’s Most Senior Military Commander. According to the IDF, Shukr was Hezbollah commander Hassan Nasrallah’s Right-Hand Man and directed Hezbollah’s attacks on Israel. IDF said he was responsible for the killing of 12 children in Majdal Shams in northern Israel earlier, as well as the killing of numerous Israelis and foreign nationals over the years. The IDF said Shukr was also responsible for the majority of Hezbollah’s most advanced weaponry, including precise-guided missiles, cruise missiles, anti-ship missiles, long-range rockets and UAVs.

The commander “was responsible for the majority of Hezbollah’s most advanced weaponry, including precise-guided missiles, cruise missiles, anti-ship missiles, long-range rockets, and UAVs. He was responsible for force build-up, planning, and execution of terror attacks against the State of Israel,” IDF said.

A strong blast was heard in the Lebanese capital on Tuesday night, and video footage on social media showed mass destruction of a residential building, with rubble scattered in the street.

Lebanese media reported that at least another person was killed in the Israeli attack and 35 were injured.

Harmanpreet’s Goal Earns India a Draw Against Argentina

Argentina, which had lost their previous match to Australia 0-1, looked more determined to put India under the pump right from the starting hooter…reports Asian Lite News

The Indian men’s hockey team captain Harmanpreet Singh came up with a late, 59th-minute goal to help his team hold Argentina 1-1 in a Pool B match in the 33rd Olympic Games at the Yves-du-Manoir Stadium here on Monday. Lucas Martinez (22′) had put Argentina, gold medallists at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, in the lead before Harmanpreet saved the day for eight-time champions India.

Coming into the match with the confidence of winning their opening game 3-2 against New Zealand, India looked dominant in the first quarter, with bursts of attacks by the young Indian forwards but breaking the Argentine deadlock was a struggle.

Meanwhile, Argentina, which had lost their previous match to Australia 0-1, looked more determined to put India under the pump right from the starting hooter.

India made a breakthrough in the 10th minute, thanks to Mandeep Singh winning a penalty corner. With Harmanpreet subbed out Sanjay made an attempt but failed to capitalise from the drag-flick. In the following minutes, Abhishek took an ambitious shot on goal, but the ball hit the crossbar, narrowly missing out on an early lead.

After a goalless first quarter, India began the second quarter with back-to-back PCs in the 19th minute but Argentina goalie Santiago did well to keep India’s captain from scoring. Unfortunately for India, there was no such luck when Lucas Martinez attempted a goal in the 22nd minute. Making space in the circle, and beating defender Harmanpreet, Martinez successfully found the net despite goalkeeper P.R. Sreejesh’s diving effort. Though India came up with some potential moves in this quarter to equalise, the Argentine backline was resolute throughout.

India came out of the 10-minute break looking positive; however, Argentina ensured the Indian forwards had little space to move around in the striking circle.

On the other hand, Argentina had several opportunities to double their lead including the PCs earned in the 37th minute but to no avail. They were even awarded a penalty stroke following a body infringement by Jarmanpreet while defending the PC but Maico Casella Schuth was way off the target.

Both teams continued to trade PCs in the remaining minutes of this quarter. Argentina won back-to-back chances in the 42nd and India in the 44th minute but there was no joy for both teams as they failed to convert.

The final quarter was dramatic, yet tense for India as they were still in the hunt to find that equaliser but Argentina’s defence hardly allowed any movement. India had to bank on aerial balls to move forward.

The final few moments remained intense as India managed a flurry of PCs and were successful finally in making the late surge. Harmanpreet came up with a brilliant execution, and powerful drag to put the ball past Santiago who was exceptional throughout the game. He kept it high, aiming at the middle of the net to find the equaliser.

The late goal brought huge celebrations among Indian fans present in the stands and ensured they split the winning points with Argentina.

With four points in two matches, India are placed third in the Pool B standings and will next take on Ireland at 4:45 pm IST on Tuesday. Ireland have lost both their matches in the tournament so far.

Choudary sentenced to 28 years in prison by court

Choudary’s lawyer, Paul Hynes, argued that the group was “little more than a husk of an organisation” and that almost all attacks linked to it had already occurred…reports Asian Lite News

British-Pakistani preacher Anjem Choudary has been sentenced to life in prison for directing a “terrorist organisation.” Choudary, 57, was convicted last week of directing al-Muhajiroun (ALM), which was banned as a ‘terrorist organisation’ more than a decade ago.

Judge Mark Wall announced a life sentence for the British-Pakistani preacher, with a minimum term of 28 years before he would be eligible for parole. Wall told Choudary at London’s Woolwich Crown Court on Tuesday that organisations such as ALM “normalise violence in support of an ideological cause” through online meetings.

“Their existence gives individuals who are members of them the courage to commit acts which otherwise they might not do. They drive wedges between people who otherwise could and would live together in peaceful coexistence,” he said. According to prosecutor Tom Little, Choudary became “the caretaker emir” of ALM after its leader, Omar Bakri Mohammed, was jailed in Lebanon in 2014.

Choudary’s lawyer, Paul Hynes, argued that the group was “little more than a husk of an organisation” and that almost all attacks linked to it had already occurred.

The police in Britain, the United States and Canada gathered evidence after a joint investigation, that Choudary was running and directing ALM via online lectures with followers based in New York. Prosecutors said the group has operated under many names, including the New York-based Islamic Thinkers Society, which Choudary has spoken to. New York Deputy Police Commissioner Rebecca Weiner, termed the case ‘historic’ and said the Islamic Thinkers Society was ALM’s US branch.

Choudary was convicted with one of his followers, Khaled Hussein. According to the prosecutors, he was also a dedicated supporter of the group. Hussein, 29, of Edmonton, Canada, was convicted of membership in a proscribed organisation and sentenced to five years in prison. The two were arrested a year ago after Hussein landed at Heathrow Airport. Earlier in 2016, Choudary was imprisoned for encouraging support for ISIL (ISIS). He was released in 2018 after serving half of his five-and-a-half-year sentence.

The group ALM, which emerged in the late 1990s, has been linked to several attacks both at home and abroad, according to Al Jazeera. (ANI)

UK govt delays decision on banning some arms sales to Israel

Last year, he was one of a number of leading Jewish lawyers in the UK to sign a letter urging Israel to show restraint in the wake of the Oct. 7 attack by Hamas…reports Asian Lite News

The UK will delay a decision on banning arms exports to Israel until later this summer, The Times reported on Tuesday.

Britain’s new Foreign Secretary David Lammy ordered an immediate review into allegations of war crimes committed by Israel in its war on Gaza after Labour won the UK’s general election in early July.

There had been speculation that a ban could be imposed as early as this week, but The Times reported that the government needs more time in order to assess use of specific weaponry linked to war crimes.

Last week, the new UK Attorney General Richard Hermer KC visited Israel after the government dropped objections raised by its predecessor to a request for an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Hermer was in Tel Aviv to explain the Labour government’s reasoning for its decision, and has gone on record in the past about his view that Israel’s “unlawful” occupation of Palestinian territory in the West Bank is “deeply damaging” to Israel and “wholly contrary to the values of tikkun olam (repairing the world) that I grew up with and continue to guide me.”

Last year, he was one of a number of leading Jewish lawyers in the UK to sign a letter urging Israel to show restraint in the wake of the Oct. 7 attack by Hamas.

Philippe Sands KC, another signatory who also represented the Palestinians at the International Court of Justice, recently insisted that the UK should stop arming Israel after an ICJ opinion calling for the end of the occupation of the West Bank.

Currently, the UK government is not including the West Bank in its assessment of whether arms export licenses should be suspended.

The UK sold arms worth £18.2 million ($23.4 million) to Israel last year, including components manufactured for the Lockheed Martin F-35 fighter jet program, of which Britain is a tier-one partner with the US, creating as much as 15 percent of the parts for the aircraft.

Banning the sale of parts for the plane would cause a major diplomatic and commercial issue with both Tel Aviv and Washington.

The F-35 is thought to have been used by Israel for strikes in the war in Gaza that has so far killed more than 39,000 people, according to local officials.

Eurozone GDP up 0.3% in Q2

In the first quarter of 2024, GDP had also grown by 0.3 per cent in both regions, the statistical office of the EU reported on Tuesday…reports Asian Lite News

Seasonally adjusted GDP increased by 0.3 per cent in both the eurozone and the European Union (EU) area in the second quarter of 2024, compared with the previous quarter, according to preliminary data released by Eurostat.

In the first quarter of 2024, GDP had also grown by 0.3 per cent in both regions, the statistical office of the EU reported on Tuesday.

Germany’s output contracted by 0.1 per cent in the second quarter, according to Eurostat data. France and Spain experienced growth of 0.3 per cent and 0.8 per cent, respectively. The highest growth rate was recorded in Ireland, with a 1.2 per cent increase in the second quarter.

Conversely, Latvia experienced a notable decline of -1.1 per cent, with Sweden and Hungary also reporting negative growth.

Bert Colijn, a senior economist at ING, remarked that although the Eurozone economy grew faster than expected in the second quarter, the recovery remains cautious, supported by low unemployment and reduced inflation. Colijn also said that there are no signs of further acceleration in the Eurozone’s economic growth.

“The differences within the eurozone remain striking,” Colijn said, noting that Spain continues to be the eurozone’s growth engine, while France also looked healthier than expected in the second quarter, although this was mainly due to one-off export effects.

“Germany remains the weak link in this post-pandemic economy, and the overall performance is lacklustre without Spain’s contribution,” he added.

UK govt to restart trade talks with India, others

Britain already has FTAs with those four countries which were rolled over when it left the European Union in 2020, but had previously launched talks aimed at updating the agreements…reports Asian Lite News

Britain’s new government said on Monday it was restarting talks aimed at securing free trade agreements (FTAs) with India and countries in the Gulf Cooperation Council.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer, whose Labour Party returned to government after 14 years in opposition following a landslide victory at a July 4 election, has made economic growth the central mission of his government.

Trade talks were paused during the election.

“Restarting talks is the first step towards agreeing the high-quality trade deals the UK needs to give businesses access to international markets, boost jobs and deliver that growth,” the government said in a statement.

The trade department said the first round of negotiations under the new government were expected to take place in the autumn and would include fresh talks with Israel, South Korea, Switzerland and Turkey.

Britain already has FTAs with those four countries which were rolled over when it left the European Union in 2020, but had previously launched talks aimed at updating the agreements.

The UK and India have had 14 rounds of negotiations since the Boris Johnson-led Conservative government launched trade talks with New Delhi in 2022. The total value of trade in goods and services was £39 billion ($50 billion) in the four quarters ending Q4 2023 as per U.K. government data.

“Our teams will be entering negotiating rooms as soon as possible, laser-focused on creating new opportunities for UK firms so they can support jobs across the country and deliver the growth we desperately need,” Business and Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds said on Monday.

A trade agreement with India would give the U.K. access to the Indian middle class, projected to grow to over a quarter of a billion consumers by 2050, a U.K. government statement said.

“I am delighted that the new government has moved so quickly to restart trade negotiations with India,” Chairman of Tata Sons N. Chandrasekaran said, according to a statement released by the U.K. Department for Business and Trade.

“As one of the largest international investors in the U.K., the Tata Group supports any action that strengthens the British economy,” he added. In July 2023, Tata Sons had announced that it would invest some £4 billion in an electric vehicle battery factory in the UK.

The U.K. and India are also negotiating a bilateral investment treaty. The U.K. wants greater access to Indian markets as far as financial, legal and other services are concerned. India wants greater ease of movement for skilled professionals to deliver services in the U.K. (under Mode 4 General Agreement on Trade in Services). Both countries want greater access for goods in several categories.

The U.K.’s Foreign Secretary, David Lammy was in New Delhi last week to begin a “reset” of a somewhat troubled relationship the Labour Party has had with India, owing in part to its former positions on Kashmir. India and the U.K. launched a security technology partnership and agreed to cooperate closely on climate change, when the U.K.’s Foreign Secretary was in New Delhi.

UK urges its citizens to leave Lebanon

Netanyahu blamed Lebanon’s Iran-backed Hezbollah group for the rocket, which struck a football field in Majdal Shams. Unusually, Hezbollah has denied having any role in the attack…reports Asian Lite News

Britons have been urged to leave Lebanon and avoid travel to the country as tensions soar in the Middle East. Foreign Secretary David Lammy said events were “fast moving” and Foreign Office staff were working “round the clock” to help ensure the safety of UK citizens.

It came after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed heavy retaliation would follow a strike in the Israel-occupied Golan Heights which killed 12 children.

Netanyahu blamed Lebanon’s Iran-backed Hezbollah group for the rocket, which struck a football field in Majdal Shams. Unusually, Hezbollah has denied having any role in the attack.

Visiting the site of the attack, Netanyahu said: “The state of Israel will not and cannot overlook this. Our response will come, and it will be severe.”

Around 300 mourners protested against Mr Netanyahu’s visit, accusing him of exploiting the bloodshed for political gain and calling for an end to the violence.

Early on Monday Israeli strikes hit a motorcycle in Lebanon near the border, killing two people and wounding three others, according to Lebanese state media. Earlier in the day Israel’s defence minister Yoav Gallant also visited the town, warning Hezbollah would “pay a price” for the attack. “We will let actions speak for themselves,” he said.

Israel and Hezbollah have exchanged fire almost daily since the war between Israel and Hamas began in October, though the rhetoric following the latest strike raised fears the attacks could spiral into a full-fledged war. Israel’s security cabinet has authorised Netanyahu and Gallant to decide on the manner and timing of the response to the strike.

The response would be “limited but significant,” Israel’s Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper quoted unidentified officials as saying. The report said options ranged from a limited attack on infrastructure such as bridges, power plants and ports, to hitting Hezbollah arms depots or targeting the group’s commanders.

US secretary of state Antony Blinken spoke to Israel’s President Isaac Herzog and emphasised the “importance of preventing escalation” and discussing efforts to reach a diplomatic solution to months of conflict. Israel seized the Golan Heights from Syria after the 1967 war and has since annexed it, though the move is not generally recognised internationally.

Since October Israeli strikes have killed around 350 Hezbollah fighters in Lebanon and more than 100 civilians, according to a Reuters tally of Hezbollah death notifications. Israel says 23 civilians and at least 17 soldiers have been killed in Hezbollah attacks since then.

Reeves drops tax bomb

Chancellor warns that UK to expect tax rises in her autumn Budget, as a row erupted over how much she knew about the £22bn fiscal hole…reports Asian Lite News

Chancellor Rachel Reeves has warned the UK to expect tax rises in her autumn Budget, as a row erupted over how much she knew about the £22bn fiscal hole she claims she inherited from the last Conservative government.

“I think that we will have to increase taxes in the Budget,” Reeves told the News Agents podcast on Tuesday. She declined to detail which taxes would increase, but again ruled out rises to value added tax, national insurance or income tax.

Reeves has accused former Tory chancellor Jeremy Hunt of lying about the state of the public finances and said that she had been unaware of the extent of the pressures on government spending before taking office.

One issue she highlighted on Monday was the former Tory government’s “failed” immigration policies, including housing asylum seekers in hotels and a scheme to send them to Rwanda, which had “placed huge pressure on the Home Office budget”.

However, Labour publicly warned before the election that the Conservatives had spent billions of pounds more than planned on the asylum system. Critics said Reeves had been well aware of the problem before entering government.

Reeves on Tuesday doubled down on her attacks on Hunt. “He lied and they lied during the election campaign about the state of the public finances,” she told Sky News.

Hunt said the attack was “desperate” and that Reeves’s claims of a fiscal cover-up were “unravelling” as it emerged that Labour had previously highlighted exploding Home Office spending.

The £6.4bn of overspend on the asylum system in 2024-25 was on Monday cited by Cabinet Office minister Pat McFadden as a particularly egregious example of things the new government had “found” that were “tougher than was revealed before the election”.

McFadden spoke of “overspends on the asylum and immigration budget, which were being funded by the [Treasury] reserve”.

However in February this year, Labour compiled a dossier of its own “shocking” figures showing there had been an “eye-watering overspend on asylum support”, taking the Home Office overspend for 2023-24 to nearly £5.5bn.

Labour officials at the time pointed out that £4.3bn of the overspend that year had been covered by Treasury reserves.

Yvette Cooper, then shadow home secretary and now leading the Home Office, said at the time that the figures laid “bare the complete chaos the Tories have created in the asylum system”.

“Now the home secretary has been forced to go to the chancellor with a begging bowl because he’s bust his budget by over £5bn,” she said in February.

Former Tory home secretary James Cleverly said: “No one could be surprised that asylum has been funded through reserves. It’s a multiyear pattern of funding.

“To turn around and say you’re shocked the government was planning to do what it’s done for the last three years is nonsensical.”

A parliamentary briefing report in March spelt out how the Home Office has for several years relied on Treasury reserves to plug a gap in funding allocated in the 2021 spending review.

James Smith, research director at the Resolution Foundation think-tank, noted that a huge spike in small boat crossings after the 2021 spending review had precipitated a multiyear shortfall.

He said that Labour “knew there was overspend in the Home Office budget” and “it was obvious this was going to be a problem”.

Smith added however that Reeves’s team were handed some “genuinely new information” about the extent of asylum and immigration costs this year.

The £6.4bn asylum overspend was the second biggest item in Reeves’s list of unfunded commitments, behind the £9.4bn the chancellor incurred by honouring in full public sector pay awards of between 5 and 6 per cent proposed by independent review bodies.

She announced a series of measures to partly close the funding gap — including axing winter fuel payments for 10mn pensioners, scrapping road and rail schemes and reviewing a hospital building programme. She also warned of more cuts and tax rises to come.

Her announcement caused concern among some left-wing Labour MPs. Diane Abbott said on X: “Departmental cuts, spending cuts, welfare cuts, cuts to investment. And more to come. This is renewed austerity.”

Reeves rejected the claim of renewed austerity, noting the pay increase for public sector workers. A spokesperson for Cooper said the £5bn Home Office shortfall was for last year and was therefore a “completely different figure” to the one unearthed this year.

“We were literally staggered by the figure for this year and the forecast for further years,” they said. The Treasury said “there will be further difficult decisions on tax and spending at the Budget on October 30”.

“The chancellor has not committed to any tax rises not already in the manifesto and has committed to not increasing national insurance, VAT or income tax,” it added.
