UAE supports Egypt on Philadelphi corridor

The UAE has condemned and denounced in the strongest terms the offensive Israeli statements and commended the extensive mediation efforts undertaken by the Egypt, Qatar, and the US to reach a ceasefire and release hostages….reports Asian Lite News

The United Arab Emirates expressed its full solidarity with the Arab Republic of Egypt in addressing Israeli claims and allegations on the Philadelphi Corridor.

Furthermore, the UAE condemned and denounced in the strongest terms the offensive Israeli statements in this regard, which threaten regional stability and risk exacerbating the current situation.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) commended the extensive mediation efforts undertaken by the Arab Republic of Egypt, the State of Qatar, and the United States to reach a ceasefire and release hostages.

The UAE expressed hope that it would lead to an end to the war, safeguarding Palestinians from additional suffering and reinforcing pillars of stability that achieves sustainable peace in the region.

The Ministry called on Israeli authorities to de-escalate and avoid exacerbating tensions and instability in the region, affirming the UAE’s rejection of all practices that violate resolutions on international legitimacy and threaten further escalation.

The Ministry underscored the importance of supporting all regional and international efforts to advance the peace process in the Middle East, and end illegal practices that undermine the two-state solution, and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.

33 Palestinians killed in week-long attacks

Israel’s military operations across the West Bank, which began a week ago, have killed 33 Palestinians and wounded about 140 others, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry.

The fatalities include 19 Palestinians in Jenin, four in Tubas, and seven in Tulkarm, all located in the northern West Bank, as well as three others in Hebron in the south, the Ramallah-based Ministry said on Wednesday in a statement.

Israeli forces continued their operation against the city of Jenin and its camp for the eighth consecutive day on Wednesday, the Palestinian official news agency WAFA reported.

WAFA said the operation has caused widespread destruction of infrastructure, including water and electricity networks, as well as damage to civilian property, Xinhua news agency reported.

Philippe Lazzarini, Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East, said on Tuesday that Jenin had been ravaged by violence and destruction.

In a post on the social media platform X, Lazzarini called for the “immediate protection of civilians across the West Bank, including in the north,” and demanded that both the Israeli army and Palestinian armed groups “uphold the protection of civilians and provide access to assistance”.

Since August 28, Israel has been conducting a large-scale raid across the northern West Bank, stating that the operation aims to arrest wanted persons and prevent future attacks against Israel.

According to the Palestinian Health Ministry, more than 680 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli attacks across the West Bank since the onset of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict in the Gaza Strip last October.

The Israeli army last week launched its largest military operation in the northern West Bank in two decades, causing massive destruction in the area.

Jenin Mayor Nidal al-Obaidi on Wednesday declared the northern West Bank city a “disaster area” as the Israeli army continued its operations there.

“The Israeli army is continuing to destroy the infrastructure in Jenin and its camp,” he told Anadolu Agency.

Tension has been running high across the occupied West Bank as Israel pressed ahead with its brutal onslaught on the Gaza Strip, which has killed more than 40,800 Palestinians, mostly women and children, since October 7 last year.

At least 685 people have since been killed and more than 5,700 injured by Israeli fire in the West Bank, according to the Health Ministry.

The escalation followed a landmark opinion by the International Court of Justice on July 19 that declared Israel’s decades-long occupation of Palestinian land unlawful and demanded the evacuation of all settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

Harris unveils plan to boost small businesses

Kamala Harris said former President Donald Trump plans to “cut off federal programmes that give loans to small businesses”….reports Asian Lite News

Vice-President Kamala Harris on Wednesday unveiled an “ambitious” plan to boost small businesses through tax deductions, low and no interest loans, investments and fairer tax codes, which together, she said, will make 25 million new applications by the end of her first term.

Small businesses “aren’t just building a business. They’re pursuing a dream. They’re building a better future for their employees and for the people they love in their communities, and by extension, they’re building a stronger middle class and a stronger America for us all,” Harris said at an election campaign event in New Hampshire.

“And so all of this is why as President, one of my highest priorities will be to strengthen America’s small businesses. And here I am in New Hampshire to announce a few elements of my plan.”

Harris had announced her larger economic plan in August, ahead of the Democratic Party Convention to formally nominate her to run for President. The overarching theme was “lower costs for American families” and key provisions of the plans were to ban price gouging, build three million new housing units and grant a tax credit of $6,000 per newborn.

The first part of the plan she announced for small businesses, Harris said, was “to help more small businesses and innovators get off the ground. Okay, now I’m setting what some I’m sure going to call a very ambitious goal but you know what I think we should admire ambition in each other”.

She added that she wants to “see 25 million new small business applications by the end of my first term. And to help achieve this, we will lower the cost of starting a new business”. The way she plans to reduce costs was to expand tax deductions for start-up from the current $5,000 to $50,000.

Second, she said, her plan will help existing small businesses grow.

“We will provide low and no interest loans to small businesses that want to expand, and we will, and this is very important, cut the red tape that can make starting and growing a small business more difficult than it needs to be, more difficult than it needs to be.”

Third, Harris said, her plan will “invest in small businesses and innovators throughout America, and here’s why we know that talent exists everywhere in our country, from rural towns to city centres, but not everyone has access to the financing, to venture capital or expert advice”.

Finally, the Vice-President said, “her plan will make our tax code more fair, while also prioritising investment and innovation. So let us be clear, billionaires and big corporations must pay their fair share in taxes.”

Harris then criticised her Republican rival’s plans.

She said former President Donald Trump plans to “cut off federal programmes that give loans to small businesses”.

Republican Liz Cheney endorses Harris

Former Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney and a son of 2008 Republican presidential nominee John McCain on Wednesday threw their support behind Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris, in the latest case of Republicans turning against party candidate Donald Trump.

Cheney’s announcement ended weeks of speculation about how fully the member of a GOP dynasty-turned-Trump critic would embrace the Democratic ticket.

Cheney, who co-chaired the House investigation into the Jan. 6, 2021, attack, became a fierce Trump critic and was ousted in her 2022 Republican primary in Wyoming as a result, made her announcement at an event at Duke University. In a video posted on the social media network X, she finished by talking about the “danger” she believed Trump still poses to the country.

“I don’t believe that we have the luxury of writing in candidates’ names, particularly in swing states,” she said. “As a conservative, as someone who believes in and cares about the Constitution, I have thought deeply about this. Because of the danger that Donald Trump poses, not only am I not voting for Donald Trump, but I will be voting for Kamala Harris.”

Harris’ campaign chair Jen O’Malley Dillon said in a statement Wednesday night: “The Vice President is proud to have earned Congresswoman Cheney’s vote. She is a patriot who loves this country and puts our democracy and our Constitution first.”

The daughter of former vice president Dick Cheney, Liz Cheney has been perhaps Trump’s highest-profile Republican critic. She joins other Republicans like her former Jan. 6 committee member, former Rep. Adam Kinzinger and former Rep. Denver Riggleman, as backers of Harris. More than 200 alumni of the Bush administration and former Republican presidential campaigns of the late Sen. John McCain and Sen. Mitt Romney also announced their endorsement of Harris last week.

Cheney was in House Republican leadership at the time of the Jan. 6 attack but broke with most of her caucus over Trump’s responsibility. She lost her leadership post and was one of the few Republicans willing to serve on the Jan. 6 committee, which was appointed by Democrats who controlled the House at the time.

Jimmy McCain, a son of former Arizona senator John McCain, said this week he has registered as a Democrat and will vote for Harris, a valuable nod of support for the Democratic nominee in a battleground state.

Meanwhile, Trump’s running mate, Ohio Sen. JD Vance, appeared outside Phoenix Wednesday for an event with the conservative youth organizing group Turning Point USA, which has been instrumental in remaking the Arizona GOP as a faithful organ of former President Donald Trump’s “Make America great again” movement.

Jimmy McCain’s endorsement and Vance’s Turning Point USA appearance reflect the disparate segments of the GOP that Harris and Trump are trying to reach. Democrats are appealing to traditional conservatives disillusioned by Trump’s takeover of the GOP, while Republicans are looking to shore up their base and ensure that their young supporters turn out.

Democrats have made big inroads over the last six years in Arizona, once a Republican stronghold that routinely backed McCain and other Republicans for president, with an anti-Trump coalition that includes Republicans and conservative independents.

Battle lines drawn for Sept. 10 debate

ABC News has laid out parameters from the basic format — 90 minutes, with two commercial breaks — to specifications that moderators David Muir and Linsey Davis…reports Asian Lite News

Vice President Kamala Harris has accepted the rules set forth for next week’s debate with former President Donald Trump, although the Democratic nominee says the decision not to keep both candidates’ microphones live throughout the matchup will be to her disadvantage.

The development, which came Wednesday by way of a letter from Harris’ campaign to host network ABC News, seemed to mark a conclusion to the debate over microphone muting, which had for a time threatened to derail the Sept. 10 presidential debate at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia.

President Joe Biden’s campaign had made the muting of microphones, except for the candidate whose turn it is to speak, a condition of his decision to accept any debates this year. Some aides have said they now regret that decision, saying voters were shielded from hearing Trump’s outbursts during the June debate. A disastrous performance for the incumbent Democrat fueled his exit from the campaign.

Once Harris rose in Biden’s stead and became their party’s pick for president, her campaign had advocated for live microphones for the whole debate, saying previously that the practice would “fully allow for substantive exchanges between the candidates.”

But on Wednesday, Harris’ advisers wrote that the former prosecutor will be “fundamentally disadvantaged by this format, which will serve to shield Donald Trump from direct exchanges with the Vice President.”

“We suspect this is the primary reason for his campaign’s insistence on muted microphones,” her campaign added.

Despite those concerns, Harris’ campaign wrote, “we understand that Donald Trump is a risk to skip the debate altogether, as he has threatened to do previously, if we do not accede to his preferred format.” So as not to “jeopardize the debate,” Harris’ campaign wrote, “we accepted the full set of rules proposed by ABC, including muted microphones.”

According to an official with Harris’ campaign, a pool of journalists will be on hand to hear what the muted candidate may be trying to say when his or her microphone is turned off. That detail was not in the full debate rules, also released Wednesday by ABC, which are essentially the same as they were for the June debate between Trump and Biden.

The network laid out parameters from the basic format — 90 minutes, with two commercial breaks — to specifications that moderators David Muir and Linsey Davis “will be the only people asking questions,” perhaps hoping to avert a free-for-all between the candidates.

“Moderators will seek to enforce timing agreements and ensure a civilized discussion,” the network noted.

The Harris campaign official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss planning around the debate, said a candidate who repeatedly interrupts will receive a warning from a moderator, and both candidates’ microphones may be unmuted if there is significant crosstalk so the audience can understand what’s happening.

After a virtual coin flip held Tuesday and won by Trump, the GOP nominee opted to offer the final closing statement, while Harris chose the podium on the right side of viewers’ screens. There will be no audience, written notes or any topics or questions shared with campaigns or candidates in advance, the network said.

Meanwhile, Harris leads Trump 45 percent to 41 percent in a Reuters/Ipsos poll published on Thursday that showed the vice president sparking new enthusiasm among voters and shaking up the race ahead of the Nov. 5 election.

The 4 percentage point advantage among registered voters was wider than a 1 point lead Harris held over the former president in a late July Reuters/Ipsos poll. The new poll, which was conducted in the eight days ended Wednesday and had a 2 percentage point margin of error, showed Harris picking up support among women and Hispanics.

Harris led Trump by 49 percent to 36 percent — or 13 percentage points — among both women voters and Hispanic voters. Across four Reuters/Ipsos polls conducted in July, Harris had a 9 point lead among women and a 6 point lead among Hispanics.

Trump led among white voters and men, both by similar margins as in July, though his lead among voters without a college degree narrowed to 7 points in the latest survey, down from 14 points in July.

The findings illustrate how the US presidential race has been shaken up over the summer. President Joe Biden, 81, folded his flailing campaign on July 21 after a disastrous debate performance against Trump sparked widespread calls from his fellow Democrats to abandon his re-election bid.

Since then, Harris has gained ground against Trump in national polls and those in critical swing states. While national surveys including Reuters/Ipsos’ give important signals on the views of the electorate, the state-by-state results of the Electoral College determine the winner, with a handful of battleground states likely to be decisive.

UAE, Jordan sign investment deal in railway sector

The memorandum aims to enhance capabilities and facilitate the exchange of knowledge, skills, and technical expertisebetween the two countries…reports Asian Lite News

The Ministry of Investment of the UAE and the Ministry of Investment of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan have signed an Investment Memorandum, to establish a framework for cooperation in the railway sector.

The memorandum aims to enhance capabilities and facilitate the exchange of knowledge, skills, and technical expertisebetween the two countries. As part of the cooperation between the two ministries, Etihad Rail, the developer and operator of the UAE National Railway Network, signed an agreement with the Jordanian Ministry of Transport to facilitate the implementation of railway projects in Jordan, with the aim of building, developing, and operating a Jordanian railway network spanning 360 kilometres, linking phosphate and potash mines to the Port of Aqaba. Furthermore, the company signed two additional MoUs with Jordan Phosphate Mines Company and Arab Potash Company to transport 16 million tonnes of phosphate and potash annually from mining sites to the Port of Aqaba via the Jordanian railway network. This strategic connection aims to create a transformative shift in the transportation of essential materials, enhance export capabilities, and improve logistical efficiency, thus, creating job opportunities in the transport and mining sectors, and contributing to economic development in the Kingdom.

Under the Investment Memorandum between the two ministries, the railway infrastructure will be developed, including the manufacturing and supply of a fleet of trains designed to the highest international standards. The project will also include the construction of loading and unloading terminals for various mineral products in Aqaba, Ghor Al Safi, and Shidiya. These terminals will facilitate the efficient handling and transportation of minerals, creating more seamless and efficient logistics and export operations. Additionally, the project will comprise maintenance, repair, and operation of the railway network.

Mohamed Hassan Alsuwaidi, Minister of Investment of the UAE, said: “The Investment Memorandum with the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan showcases our commitment to leveraging our collective and bilateral efforts to drive economic growth, while enhancing resilience and promoting economic diversification in both of our brotherly nations. Through enhancing capabilities and sharing technical expertise, we aim to establish new economic and investment connections that support infrastructure development and foster promising opportunities, all within the framework of our vision to achieve comprehensive and sustainable economic growth.” He added: “This collaborative partnership aligns with our overarching vision to construct a robust and innovative railway network that meets and exceeds global standards, thereby setting the stage for future advancements and prosperity in the region.”

The Prime Minister of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, Dr. Bisher Al-Khasawneh, highlighted during the signing ceremony, which was also attended by the UAE Minister of Investment,
Mohamed Hassan Alsuwaidi, that this significant strategic investment project underscores the deep and amicable bond between the two nations. He emphasised that these ties are nurtured and supported by His Majesty King Abdullah II of Jordan and President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

Dr Al-Khasawneh stated: “Today, we signed Emirati investment agreements valued at US$2.3 billion to connect the Port of Aqaba with the mining areas in Al-Shidiya and Ghor Al-Safi.” He noted that these agreements, along with the series of investment initiatives, are part of a broader memorandum of understanding, agreement, and series of investment initiatives that Jordan signed with the UAE in November 2023. This series of investment initiatives, witnessed by His Majesty King Abdullah II and President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, totals approximately US$5.5 billion. He added, “We are always pleased with the enduring strategic partnership and close fraternal ties between Jordan and the UAE, which reflect the strong bond between His Majesty King Abdullah II and his brother, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.”

He emphasised that the signing of these agreements symbolises the deep fraternal and strategic relations between the two nations and serves the mutual interests of both sides. He highlighted that the signed agreements form a comprehensive cooperative framework in the railway sector, aimed at transferring technical expertise and skills related to railway construction and operation. The Prime Minister noted that the project will take five years to commence actual operations, projected for 2030. Detailed studies on railway tracks and the handling requirements for potash and phosphate will be completed by the end of 2025, with the goal of issuing bids for construction work in early 2026.

He explained that the establishment of this railway will greatly enhance our logistical and export capabilities, starting with a capacity of 16 million tons of phosphate and potash products. He highlighted that this crucial project for the Kingdom will connect major mining sites with the industrial port and phosphate port, extending to Wadi Al-Yatam in Aqaba. Additionally, it will improve logistical efficiency and export processes, creating new job opportunities across various fields, including logistics, mining, railways, and other related sectors. Dr Al-Khasawneh also highlighted that the railway route will commence at the phosphate port and the industrial port in Aqaba, extending northward to Wadi Al-Yatam and then to Shidiya. Another route will brand westward from Wadi Al-Yatam to Ghor Al Safi through Wadi Araba. He noted that this project will be implemented under the Jordanian Investment Fund Law and will require five years to be completed.

The Prime Minister expressed his gratitude to the Jordan Phosphate Mines Company and the Arab Potash Company for their constructive engagement during the negotiation phase of this project. He also commended the cooperation shown by the UAE’s Etihad Rail Company. He further extended his thanks to the Emirati partners for their interest in Jordan’s investment environment in general, and in the transport and railway sectors in particular. This interest builds upon the many existing Emirati investments, some of which are set to come to fruition soon in the Aqaba Special Economic Zone. The Prime Minister mentioned ongoing discussions with Emirati partners about revisiting the idea of establishing a dry port in Ma’an. He noted that while it may be premature to discuss this project extensively, the railway initiative lays the groundwork for re-establishing the dry port in Ma’an, enhancing the logistics network and the transport sector in the Kingdom. He also announced the continuation of collaboration with the Emirati partners, which will benefit both countries, emphasising that the two nations operate as ‘one body and one mind’. This relationship is strengthened by the strategic and historical ties between their leaderships and peoples, serving as a model for exemplary Arab relation.

Shadi Malak, CEO of Etihad Rail, said: “The agreements and MoUs signed by Etihad Rail reinforce our ongoing commitment to strengthening our presence in the region. This
strategic vision is made possible by the unwavering support of our wise leadership and the guidance of H.H. Sheikh Theyab bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of Etihad Rail. We are keen to leverage our proven expertise in developing and operating the UAE National Railway Network to support the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan’s ambitious plans for advancing its rail infrastructure and driving economic growth. This aligns with the strong and cooperative relationship between our two nations, particularly in the implementation of joint projects in the transport and infrastructure sectors, which are mutually beneficial to our nations.”

The Jordanian railway network project, which will be implemented by Etihad Rail in Jordan, is characterised by its strategic connection between phosphate and potash mines and the Port of Aqaba – a major port in the Red Sea region. Strategically located between Europe, Asia, and Africa, the port plays a pivotal role in the development of the Jordanian economy, handling most imports and exports to and from the Hashemite Kingdom, including products from the mining industries such as raw phosphate and potash, which are among the most abundant natural resources in the country.

Since its establishment in the UAE, Etihad Rail has been responsible for building, developing, and operating the UAE National Railway Network for freight and passenger transport, and constitutes a key part of the “Projects of the 50,” the largest initiative to solidify the strength of the Union for the next fifty years. Since 2016, the company has been operating a route, transporting granulated sulfur from gas production fields in Shah and Habshan to export points at Ruwais Port. In 2023, the UAE National Railway Network was inaugurated, and freight train operations were launched across the UAE. Furthermore, Etihad Rail continues to make progress in developing its passenger transport services, which will operate on the same network in the future. Etihad Rail has achieved remarkable success in its efforts to enhance cooperation with neighbouring countries in the rail transport sector. This is evident through the UAE-Oman Railway Network project, which is being implemented by Etihad Rail, Oman Rail, and Mubadala Investment Company through a joint venture company, Hafeet Rail. This joint network will contribute to strengthening the position of the UAE and Oman as logistical hubs in the region and enhance their role as gateways to regional markets.

This Investment Memorandum follows a US$2 billion agreement signed by the UAE and Jordan in 2023, establishing a framework for investment cooperation in key areas such as infrastructure and development. The UAE is one of the largest foreign investors in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, having invested about US$ 22.5 billion into various key sectors of the country’s economy over the past 10 years

Sisi meets Erdogan in Turkey

El-Sisi’s official visit, which began yesterday in response to President Erdoğan’s invitation, aims to lay the foundation for a new phase in bilateral relations…reports Asian Lite News

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi emphasised that his current visit to Türkiye, along with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s earlier visit to Cairo, reflects the shared will to initiate a new phase of friendship and cooperation between the two countries.

El-Sisi expressed his great pleasure at his first visit to the Republic of Türkiye and his meeting with President Erdoğan, noting that the historical relations between the two nations date back to the establishment of the Turkish Republic by leader Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.

The Egyptian presidency affirmed that El-Sisi’s official visit, which began yesterday in response to President Erdoğan’s invitation, aims to lay the foundation for a new phase in bilateral relations and to enhance cooperation in various fields.

Ambassador Ahmed Fahmy, the official spokesperson for the Egyptian Presidency, stated that this historic visit represents a significant step towards strengthening bilateral relations in light of regional challenges that require consultation and coordination between the two countries.

The visit is expected to include the two presidents chairing the first meeting of the Egypt-Türkiye High Level Strategic Cooperation Council .

During the meeting, the two sides will discuss ways to enhance cooperation across various fields and exchange views on regional and international issues, including efforts to secure a ceasefire in Gaza and address the humanitarian crisis there.

“All aspects of Turkey-Egypt relations will be reviewed, and joint steps that could be taken in the upcoming period to further improve bilateral cooperation will be addressed at the Council meeting,” the statement said, adding several agreements are expected to be signed during the meeting.

The two leaders’ talks will also include discussions on “current regional and global matters, particularly the ongoing Israeli attacks in the Gaza Strip and the occupied Palestinian territories,” the statement noted.

The visit follows Erdogan’s trip to Cairo in February, signaling a thaw in bilateral ties after years of hostility. Relations between Turkey and Egypt soured after the ouster of former Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi in July 2013 and the subsequent banning of his Turkey-backed Muslim Brotherhood group, which led both countries to expel each other’s ambassadors.

Ties between the two countries began to improve in 2020 when Ankara launched a diplomatic effort to reduce tensions with its estranged regional rivals, including the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt.
