Arab League calls to activate ‘One Health’ approach

This year’s celebration is themed “Promoting the One Health Approach”…reports Asian Lite News

The League of Arab States has stressed the importance of implementing the “One Health” approach at national, regional, and global levels to ensure a healthy, safe, and dignified life for humans while also safeguarding animal and environmental health, thereby reducing the risk of disease outbreaks and epidemics.

This was stated in a press release issued by the League today on the occasion of Arab Health Day, observed annually on 4th September.

This year’s celebration is themed “Promoting the One Health Approach”, which is approved by the Council of Arab Ministers of Health at its 60th regular session held on 26th May 2024 in Geneva, which included approval of the Arab Republic of Egypt’s request to host the celebration.

Ambassador Dr. Haifa Abu Ghazaleh, Assistant Secretary-General and Head of Social Affairs Sector at the League of Arab States, emphasised that the “One Health” approach is an integrated strategy aimed at achieving a balance between human and animal health. It relies on the close links between these fields to establish new methods for monitoring and controlling diseases, ultimately improving global health.

She noted that this approach comes as a lesson learned from the COVID-19 pandemic, which was a human health crisis resulting from a virus transmitted from animals to humans.

She stressed the importance of supporting cooperation and coordination among different sectors in member states to close the gaps in implementing the “One Health” approach, especially as health systems alone cannot address health epidemics and pandemics.

She added that the Council of Arab Ministers of Health is working to enhance this approach by adopting various strategies, activating the work of its affiliated committees, and strengthening partnerships with all stakeholders to mitigate public health threats, in addition to collaborating with partners in international organisations to achieve this goal.

UAE launches Gaza polio vax drive

The campaign, began in central Gaza, in collaboration with the World Health Organisation, UNICEF, and UNRWA, will gradually move to the south and north of the Strip….reports Asian Lite News

The UAE has launched an urgent vaccination campaign in the Gaza Strip, aimed at protecting over 640,000 children from the threat of polio.

The campaign, in line with the directives of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, began on Sunday in central Gaza, in collaboration with the World Health Organisation, UNICEF, and UNRWA, and will gradually move to the south and north of the Strip. The campaign aims at vaccinating 90 percent of children to prevent the spread of polio.

Volunteers from ‘Operation Chivalrous Knight 3’ played a key role in organising and supporting vaccination points, contributing to the smooth operation of the campaign and providing assistance to families and children, thereby enhancing the campaign’s effectiveness in achieving its goals.

Amid significant challenges in Gaza, including population displacement and the deterioration of health systems and water and sanitation networks, this campaign is a critical response to prevent the spread of epidemics and protect future generations.

In August, the World Health Organisation confirmed the first case of polio in the Strip in 25 years, underscoring the importance of this intervention to safeguard the children of Gaza.

More than 2,100 health workers, including mobile health teams, are participating in the campaign to ensure the vaccine reaches all targeted children during humanitarian ceasefires.

Through this initiative, the UAE reaffirms its ongoing commitment to supporting its brothers in Gaza, particularly in providing protection and healthcare for children in these challenging circumstances.

Over 161k kids vaccinated in two days

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has vaccinated 161,000 Palestinian children in two days as part of the polio vaccination campaign in Gaza, surpassing the initial target of around 156,550.

Speaking at a press conference today (via video link from Gaza) to journalists in Geneva, Dr. Rik Peeperkorn, WHO Representative in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, stated that preliminary data shows around 74,340 children were vaccinated on the second day of the campaign, while over 86,600 children were vaccinated on the first day.

Dr. Peeperkorn added that the majority of the remaining children in central Gaza are expected to be vaccinated by the end of the first round. He noted that multiple teams have been deployed at larger fixed sites, allowing some to operate as mobile teams to proactively reach children and ensure no child is missed.

The WHO official confirmed that vaccination teams encountered larger populations in Maghazi, Bureij, and Al-Masdar, where additional vaccine shipments were sent to primary healthcare centres in Maghazi and Bureij due to high demand.

Dr. Peeperkorn highlighted that WHO considers there to be a significant risk of type 2 poliovirus infection within Gaza and internationally, due to gaps in children’s immunity caused by disruptions in routine immunisation, a high number of newborns, the destruction of the healthcare system, ongoing population displacement, malnutrition, and severely damaged water and sanitation systems.

Last Saturday, President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan directed the allocation of US$5 million to support the emergency polio vaccination campaign in Gaza following the first recorded case of the virus in the area. The initiative is part of the UAE’s ongoing efforts to provide relief to the Palestinian people, particularly children, in response to the challenging humanitarian conditions they face.

Second batch of vaccines arrive

A shipment of 350,000 polio vaccine doses arrived in the Gaza Strip, Palestinian Health Minister Majed Abu Ramadan said.

This is the second batch of vaccines, which are being stored in a dedicated warehouse for a coordinated vaccination campaign with the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef). A total of nearly 1.6 million doses are expected to arrive, enough to vaccinate all children from birth to 10-years-old with two doses each, Xinhua news agency reported.

The campaign will extend to Khan Younis, Gaza City, and northern governorates.

Abu Ramadan also urged the international community and organisations to press Israel to halt the “aggression” and allow health personnel to work in Gaza.

UNRWA has said that the polio vaccine is very safe, with most children experiencing no side effects.

“There is no treatment for polio, but getting the vaccine is the only effective solution for preventing it,” UNRWA said in a post on social platform X, urging Gaza residents to immunise their children.

Green Signal For 131 Clean Energy Projects

Sixth renewables auction delivers record smashing 131 clean energy projects powering equivalent of 11 million homes. New wind and solar farms to support mission to bring bills down and boost economic growth…reports Asian Lite News

Millions of homes and businesses across Britain will be powered by a new supply of clean, cheap, homegrown energy as a record number of projects receive funding through the government’s most successful renewables auction to date.

The new projects will support the mission to decarbonise the electricity grid by 2030 and hit net zero in 2050, helping transform the country into a clean energy superpower.

In a key milestone towards delivering clean power by 2030, the latest auction round delivered 131 new green infrastructure projects. This makes it the biggest round ever with significant numbers for onshore wind, solar and tidal energy, which will power the equivalent of 11 million British homes.   The results are a marked improvement on the previous auction round in 2023, which saw zero offshore wind projects agreed.

These successful results come after the government last month moved quickly to increase the budget by 50% – a record funding uplift and 7 times bigger than the previous round’s pot.

As a result, offshore wind is back for business in UK waters – the backbone of the clean energy mission – with 9 contracts awarded including securing both what will be Europe’s largest and second largest windfarm projects, Hornsea 3 and Hornsea 4 off the Yorkshire coast.

A new rollout of low-carbon electricity is a key step for UK energy independence and energy security, helping protect families and businesses from spiking global fossil fuel prices.

Projects have been agreed at well below the upper limit on the price set for the auction – meaning the government has bought a record amount of clean power at much lower cost to consumers than the maximum price – providing value for money and cheap power.

Funding awarded also help support new green jobs across the country, increasing prosperity in industrial heartlands and rural communities, and unlocking green economic growth from the Scottish Highlands to the Suffolk coast.

“We inherited a broken energy policy, including last year’s disastrous auction round which gave us no successful offshore wind projects,” said Ed Miliband, Energy Secretary.  “Today we have now achieved a record-setting round for enough renewable power for 11 million homes, essential to give energy security to families across the country. It is another significant step forward in our mission for clean power by 2030 – bringing Britain energy independence and lower bills for good.”

These results show that together, this government and the energy industry are securing investment into our country. This auction has produced a record number of solar projects bolstering our mission for a solar revolution, we have powered forward with onshore wind, secured the largest commercial floating offshore wind project in the world and got the offshore industry back on its feet.

As we accelerate our plan for clean power by 2030 the government will work with the industry on how we can build on this success to ensure we can go even further and faster to deliver the power we need.

On the back of this successful auction, the Energy Secretary is working with the industry to accelerate ways that the Contracts for Difference system and other energy policies can be expanded, so that more renewable energy, including offshore wind, can be connected to the grid, and quicker.

The 131 projects this year is the biggest auction to date – exceeding the 92 projects delivered in the last auction round.

This includes:   the largest offshore windfarm project in Europe – the Hornsea 3 project off the Yorkshire coast; the largest floating offshore wind project in the world to reach market, Green Volt, which is double the size of Europe’s total installed floating offshore wind capacity; 6 new tidal projects, building on the UK’s world leading position, with just under half of the world’s operational tidal stream capacity being situated in UK water; a combined 115 solar and onshore wind projects, which is more than the total number of projects delivered in the last auction round .

“Securing new wind turbines, solar panels and cutting-edge technologies such as tidal will boost growth, catalyse investment and support good jobs across Great Britain,” said Energy Minister Michael Shanks. “ We’ve done this while ensuring value for money for billpayers, delivering the biggest auction round to date at competitive prices, helping turbocharge our mission for energy independence and clean power by 2030.”

Today’s announcement is the latest step the government has taken to accelerate the mission for clean, secure power by 2030. In just 3 months the government has:   lifted the ban on onshore wind in England; launched Great British Energy in partnership with the Crown Estate, backed by £8.3 billion of new money, which is estimated to create up to 20-30GW of new offshore wind developments reaching seabed lease stage by 2030; approved 3 major solar farms powering the equivalent of around 400,000 new homes; launched its Clean Energy Mission Control centre, led by former Climate Change Committee Chief Executive Chris Stark, to accelerate the deployment of clean power.

12 dead as migrant boat capsizes in English Channel

Nearly 70 people were on board the vessel, according to Boulogne-sur-Mer mayor, Frédéric Cuvillier. The exact number is unclear…reports Asian Lite News

At least 12 people died, most of them women and children, when a migrant boat capsized off the coast of northern France on Tuesday, according to French authorities.

Nearly 70 people were on board the vessel, according to Boulogne-sur-Mer mayor, Frédéric Cuvillier. The exact number is unclear.

Emergency crews rescued 53 people and recovered the bodies of the dead, the maritime prefecture said. Several of those saved were in critical condition and required urgent medical care. Three helicopters, two fishing vessels and two boats have been deployed in the search and rescue operation.

The incident is the latest in a number of tragedies on the English Channel, where small boat crossings of migrants attempting to reach Britain has soared in recent years. “This maritime sector is one of the busiest areas in the world, with more than 600 merchant ships passing through it every day and the weather conditions are often difficult, so it is a particularly dangerous sector, even when the sea seems calm,” the prefecture said.

Most of the migrants on board appeared to be from Eritrea, the Boulogne-sur-Mer prosecutor, Guirec Le Bras, said Tuesday. He added that 10 of the 12 who died were women and some were minors. Le Bras said it appears that the boat sank about 5 kilometers (3 miles) off the coast of Cap Gris-Nez, on the northern coast of France.

French interior minister Gerald Darmanin told reporters in Boulogne-sur-Mer on Tuesday that “less than eight people had a life jacket” on board the boat, as he pointed the finger at smugglers for the unsafe conditions.

“Obviously, it is a tragedy. As soon as a person loses their life on our territory, I would obviously like to have a compassionate thought for their families,” Darmanin added. “They were undoubtedly looking for a better world in Great Britain.”

Nearly 30,000 people reached Britain by crossing the Channel in a small boat last year, according to Home Office figures, with dinghies and other small vessels frequently being used to take large groups of people on the dangerous journey in the hope of seeking asylum in the United Kingdom.

Deadly incidents like Tuesday’s have occurred on a number of occasions during that time. Last August, six people died when a boat carrying dozens of migrants capsized.

The issue became a major political obstacle for the previous Conservative government, which was criticized by migrant rights groups for its hardline rhetoric against asylum seekers, and for the new Labour administration.

The head of the French mission for Médecins Sans Frontières, Xavier Crombé, on Tuesday blamed the policies of the French and British governments for the latest deaths.

“We are shocked and angry after this new tragedy in the English Channel,” Crombé said. “These deaths are not inevitable, but the tragic consequence of inhumane and absurd migration policies.”

Crombé said that current policies prioritize border control rather than human lives, making migrant journeys “more precarious and dangerous.”

Snatch thefts in England, Wales more than double in a year

The survey also estimated that more than one third of thefts from the person involved the theft of a mobile phone in the past year…reports Asian Lite News

The number of ‘snatch thefts’ across England and Wales soared by over 150 per cent in the past year, the Home Office said on Tuesday.

According to data analysis from the Crime Survey for England and Wales by the Home Office, an estimated 78,000 people had their phones or bags snatched from them on the streets, averaging more than 200 snatch thefts per day over the past 12 months.

The survey also estimated that more than one third of thefts from the person involved the theft of a mobile phone in the past year, Xinhua news agency reported.

“Personal robbery can have a devastating impact on victims, leaving them with trauma which can be lasting,” said Richard Smith, National Police Chiefs’ Council lead for personal robbery. He added that criminals often target “some of the most vulnerable in society, such as children.”

Policing intelligence indicates this surge is being driven by increased demand for second-hand smartphones, both in the United Kingdom and abroad, the Home Office said in a statement.

The Home Office said that tech companies and manufacturers will be invited to a summit focused on exploring “new innovations” and “anti-theft smartphone features” that could help combat the illegal market.

“Phone companies must ensure that any stolen phones can be quickly, easily and permanently disabled, rather than re-registered for sale on the second-hand market,” Policing Minister Dame Diana Johnson said.

The national police intelligence unit Operation Opal will launch an intelligence probe to gather information about the criminals who steal mobile phones and the destinations of these devices. This effort aims to provide a clearer understanding of the stolen mobile phone market, according to the Home Office.

Iran summons UK envoy over sanctions

Iran’s Foreign Ministry summoned the British charge d’affaires in response to the UK’s recent sanctions on three Iranian individuals and one entity….reports Asian Lite News

According to a ministry statement on Tuesday, the diplomat was summoned by Majid Nili Ahmadabadi, the ministry’s director for Western European nations, following London’s announcement on Monday that it had imposed sanctions on Hamid Fazeli, Behnam Shahriari, Abdolfatah Ahvazian, and Unit 700 of the Quds Force of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

The British government accused these individuals and the entity of supporting activities aimed at destabilising Israel, Iraq, Yemen, Lebanon, Britain, and other nations.

During the meeting, Ahmadabadi condemned the sanctions, asserting they conflicted with the new British government’s purported policies of engagement and cooperation.

The Iranian diplomat also criticised Britain for its support of Israel’s actions against Palestinians and its backing of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, claiming these contributed to regional instability.

The statement noted that the UK charge d’affaires said Iran’s concerns would be conveyed to the British government.

‘We will win the war with or without British arms’

This comes after the UK announced to suspend 30 out of 350 arms export licences to Israel…reports Asian Lite News

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the British government’s decision to suspend thirty arms licences to Israel, asserting that regardless of the UK’s support, Israel remains resolute in its determination to emerge victorious in this conflict.

“With or without British arms, Israel will win this war and secure our common future,” posted the Office of the Prime Minister of Israel on X.

Denouncing it as a “shameful move that will not change Israel’s determination to defeat Hamas,” he said, “Instead of standing with Israel, a fellow democracy defending itself against barbarism, Britain’s misguided decision will only embolden Hamas.”

Notably, Hamas savagely murdered 1200 people on October 7, including 14 British citizens. Moreover, Hamas is still holding over 100 hostages, including 5 British citizens.

This comes after the UK announced to suspend 30 out of 350 arms export licences to Israel, citing a “clear risk” they could be used in serious breaches of international humanitarian law.

Foreign Secretary David Lammy told parliament on Monday that the partial ban covers items “which could be used in the current conflict in Gaza” against Hamas but did not include parts for F-35 fighter jets, according to Al Jazeera.

“Israel is pursuing a just war with just means, taking unprecedented measures to keep civilians out of harm’s way and comporting fully with international law,” added Netanyahu.

Netanyahu drew a historical parallel, and compared Israel’s battle against Hamas to Britain’s fight against the Nazi regime during World War II, and said, “Just as Britain’s heroic stand against the Nazis is seen today as having been vital in defending our common civilization, so too will history judge Israel’s stand against Hamas and Iran’s axis of terror.”

Netanyahu emphasised that Israel is conducting a just war, utilising just means, while taking unprecedented steps to minimise harm to civilians and adhering to international law.

“Israel is pursuing a just war with just means, taking unprecedented measures to keep civilians out of harm’s way and comporting fully with international law,” he said. (ANI)

UK defends partial Israel arms sales ban

The UK has defended its decision to suspend some arms sales to Israel. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has called the decision “shameful”, saying on social media that it “will only embolden Hamas”.

But Husam Zomlot, the Palestinians’ top envoy to the UK, called the partial ban an “important first step” to the UK’s fulfilment of its “legal obligations under domestic and international law”.

On Monday, the UK suspended around 30 out of 350 weapons export licences to Israel.

But Defence Secretary John Healey insisted the UK remained a “staunch ally” of Israel, telling that Israel’s security would not be weakened by the decision. Government ministers say the weapons could be used in Gaza to violate international law. Human rights group Amnesty International UK said the measures were “too limited”.

Others have criticised the timing of the announcement for coming on the same day funerals took place for six hostages killed by Hamas last week.

Healey said it was “agonising” seeing the faces of the dead hostages, but said the timing was “driven by the fact that this was a legal process” and the need to report to Parliament.

Foreign Secretary David Lammy said on Monday the UK would be suspending 30 out of 350 arms export licences to Israel, affecting equipment such as parts for fighter jets, helicopters and drones.

Healey said these were chosen because they supplement equipment used in Gaza for “offensive purposes”, while the “vast majority of other parts our country exports to Israel are either not related to the conflict or maybe used for Israel’s defence”. UK arms sales to Israel are small in comparison to other allies, contributing just 1% of the country’s defence imports. The UK exports arms to multiple countries including Ukraine, Saudi Arabia and Turkey.

The US is by far the largest supplier of arms to Israel, accounting for 69% of its imports of major conventional arms between 2019 and 2023, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute.

In a statement, Zomlot said that the Palestinian Mission to the UK would “continue working” with the UK government towards a “full arms embargo”.

Amnesty International UK accused the government of “gesture politics”, given less than 10% of arms export licences were suspended.

The charity’s chief executive, Sacha Deshmukh, said the restrictions were “too limited and riddled with loopholes”.

“[The] decision means that while ministers apparently accept that Israel may be committing war crimes in Gaza, [the government] is nevertheless continuing to risk complicity in war crimes, apartheid – and possible genocide – by Israeli forces in Gaza,” he said.

The non-profit organisation has continuously called for a ceasefire and for humanitarian aid to be allowed into Gaza.

On social media, Netanyahu said: “With or without British arms, Israel will win this war and secure our common future. Instead of standing with Israel, a fellow democracy defending itself against barbarism, Britain’s misguided decision will only embolden Hamas.”

Asked about comments made by former Prime Minister Boris Johnson who accused the government of “abandoning Israel”, Healey insisted the UK would support Israel in defending itself if it came under direct attack.
