Railway rejects speculations on sleeper class coaches

The Indian Railways on Thursday refuted reports that it was going to discontinue the sleeper class on mail and express trains and said that the aim behind introducing three-tier coaches was to make journey of passengers more affordable and comfortable.

Addressing a virtual press conference, Railway Board Chairman and CEO V.K. Yadav said: “We will continue with sleeper class coaches. There’s absolutely no ambiguity related to it.”

Noting that the railways plans to increase the speed of trains on its network and soon, trains on the New Delhi-Mumbai and New Delhi-Kolkata routes will run at 130 kmph, while work to upgrade tracks to enable trains run at 160 kmph has also started, he, however, said that with the increased speeds, passengers in sleeper class coaches will face difficulties and discomfort.

“So, we have decided to make a new AC-3 tier coach which will be introduced next year. Our aim is to make AC travel more affordable for the passengers and fare will be between that of AC-3 and sleeper class,” he said.

The Indian Railways on Sunday said that it plans to introduce AC-3 tier coaches in mail and express trains, giving rise to speculations that it has planned to do away with the sleeper class coaches.

The announcement led to widespread criticism.

The CEO also said that the freight revenue up to October 13 this year has witnessed a jump of 11 per cent as compared to the same period last year. He also said that the automobile loading has gained momentum and witnessed a jump of over 68 per cent as the railways has loaded 126 automobile rakes.

He also said that the national transporter is currently operating 682 special trains and 20 clone trains.

“Apart from this, 416 festival special trains will also be run from October 20 to November 30,” he said.

He also said that a new timetable will be implemented when regular train services resume but it is difficult to tell a time period when it will come into effect.

Chennaiyin FC ropes in Tajik star Fatkhullo

Two-time Indian Super League (ISL) champions Chennaiyin FC have completed the signing of Fatkhullo Fatkhulloev on a free transfer for the 2020-21 season.

The 30-year-old winger, who can operate on either flank, is all set for a first stint in India with tons of experience. Fatkhulloev is Tajikistan’s most-capped international with 68 senior appearances so far, and he joins CFC after a spell at FK Khujand in the Tajik top flight.

“I have heard a lot about Chennaiyin, seen many matches from previous seasons. CFC is one of the biggest clubs in India with fantastic fans. So when the opportunity arose to make the move, I didn’t think twice. I am really excited about meeting my new teammates, and hopefully delivering a good brand of football with them, which helps us compete for the ISL title,” said Fatkhulloev who hails from the city of Dushanbe in Tajikistan.

Fatkhulloev was a key member of the Tajikistan squad that finished third in the 2006 U-17 Asian Championship, scoring in the third-place playoff win against Syria.

He was also pivotal in helping Tajikistan reach the round-of-16 stage of the 2007 FIFA U-17 World Cup, with Fatkhulloev netting in the group stage victory over USA. At the senior international level, he has nine goals in 68 appearances, including two strikes against India – in the 2008 AFC Challenge Cup final defeat and in a 2013 international friendly win.

“In Fatkhullo (Fatkhulloev), we are signing an experienced professional who has proven his mettle for club and country. He is yet another player who fits our mould of versatility, capable of performing on both wings, and even down the middle. He has won all the major honours back home in Tajikistan, so an added advantage is the winning mentality he will bring to the table,” said Chennaiyin FC head coach Csaba Laszlo.

Learnt More From Defeats: Chhetri

Sunil Chhetri, captain of the Indian men’s football team, has stated that in life, he has learned more from defeats than victories.

“I think in life I have learnt more from defeats. When I’ve won a lot, over a period of time I feel I become complacent,” Chhetri told Indian cricket team skipper Virat Kohli during an Instagram live session arranged by Puma.

Kohli agreed with Chhetri and said: “Yes, you understand that you learn more from losses not victories. When you win, you hardly reflect on things. But, I have realised you should reflect even when you win. You always have something to improve on, learn and get better at. If we can get that consistency in wins and losses, you can be more balanced going forward.”

Chhetri is India’s all-time top goal-scorer and second in the world in the list of active goalscorers in international football. He has scored 72 international goals while star Portuguese striker Cristiano Ronaldo has scored 101.

When asked by Kohli about his motivation, the talismanic striker said: “There is no comparison. I feel happy about it and forget about it. The joy of playing football and the love I get is unbelievable. It’s not something I have dreamt of.”

“I want to give it everything I have got. I don’t take the pressure, I just enjoy it because I’m living a life which I have not even dreamt of. I don’t let even a day go by where I don’t give my 100 per cent,” he added.

RCB skipper Virat Kohli

Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, fans are currently not allowed to watch their favourites sporting stars in action from inside the stadiums. Currently, Kohli is in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) leading Royals Challengers Bangalore in the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) being played sans fans.

“As a fan, when I got the news that I won’t be able to watch the game in the stadium, I felt bad. Sport is all about fans. I realised live sports gives you so much happiness. It’s equally exciting,” said Chhetri.

“When you get an opportunity to watch live sports, there aren’t many things in life better than that. I’m saying it with all my heart. As a fan you have to be patient. Watch the live game on television and enjoy it,” he added.

Even Kohli agreed that fans boost the confidence of the players and motivate them to bring out their A-game.

Chhetri also talked about his experience in the lockdown which was imposed first in March to stem the spread of novel coronavirus.

“In the first one month, I had no clue as to what I’m going to – not allowed to go out, not allowed to train was difficult. Suddenly it hits you that life is much more bigger than your sport,” he said.

“I remember talking to you when you had already started your training and that really hit me. I started at home – with being more disciplined. Now we are allowed to train under a bio-bubble and it feels good to be back,” the 36-year-old added.

IMF Foresees Steep Fall And Rise For India’s GDP

With the coronavirus pandemic still to be contained and the central government’s stimulus measures having limited impact on economic activities and consumer demand, the outlook for the Indian economy for the current financial year has only worsened.

In its latest global outlook, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) predicts that India’s GDP will contract by 10.3 per cent in the 2020-21 fiscal. This is a downward revision of its previous estimate of 5.8 per cent.

The outlook for the next financial year (2021-22), however, has improved. The IMF now estimates an 8.8 per cent growth in the country’s GDP in FY22, higher than the previous estimate of 2.8 per cent.

Noting that all emerging market and developing economy regions are expected to contract this year, IMF’s World Economic Outlook said: “Revisions to the forecast are particularly large for India, where GDP contracted much more severely than expected in the second quarter. As a result, the economy is projected to contract by 10.3 per cent in 2020, before rebounding by 8.8 per cent in 2021.”

Global economy is now projected to contract 4.4 per cent in 2020, as per IMF’s latest estimate.

In her foreword to the World Economic Outlook, IMF Chief Economist Gita Gopinath noted that preventing further setbacks to the global economy will require that policy support is not prematurely withdrawn.

“The path ahead will require skilful domestic policies that manage trade-offs between lifting near-term activity and addressing medium-term challenges,” she said.

As India’s growth falls, amongst the most in the world, India is on track to fall below Bangladesh in terms of the per capita GDP. India will grow smartly next year, as per IMF.

As per the World Economic Outlook report, India’s per capita GDP is set to plunge to $1,877 this fiscal year ending March 31, 2021. This will make India the third poorest country in South Asia with only Pakistan and Nepal behind.

Bangladesh, Bhutan, Sri Lanka and Maldives now have more per capita GDP than India.

Bangladesh’s per capita GDP in dollar terms is expected to grow 4 per cent in 2020 to $1,888, overtaking India.

Till five years back, India’s per capita GDP was 40 per cent higher than Bangladesh. In the last five years, Bangladesh has grown three times the rate of India, at 9.1 per cent compared to 3.2 per cent for India, a much larger economy.

Israeli Move To Build New Settlement draws Ire

Israel approved more than 1,300 new settler homes in the occupied West Bank on Wednesday in the first such go-ahead since it suspended annexation plans in the territory, reports Arab News.

The decision has drawn an angry response from Palestinians, who seek to establish a state in the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem.

“We urge the international community to intervene immediately to stop this settlement madness, which destroys any chance for a genuine peace process,” said Nabil Abu Rudeineh, a spokesman for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

As for the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who faces protests from the citizenry, the construction could help mute criticism from settler leaders, who are traditional allies. They had expressed discontentment over the suspension of the annexation of occupied territories, which paved way for a diplomatic truce with the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain.

Jordanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates also condemned the move to build thousands of housing units in the occupied Palestinian territories.

The ministry’s spokesperson Dhaifallah Fayez, affirmed Jordan’s rejection of the Israeli settlement policies in the occupied Palestinian territories breaching of international law and UN Security Council resolutions, according to Saudi Press Ageny.

The official stressed the need to stop all settlement practices, whether in the form of construction, expansion or confiscation of lands, in accordance with Israel’s obligations as an occupying power.

Fayez called on the international community to take “decisive” stances to pressure Israel to stop its practices that undermine peace efforts and opportunities.

Anrich Nortje Shatters IPL Pace Records

Delhi Capitals (DC) fast bowler Anrich Nortje smashed the IPL speed records in a fiery opening spell against Rajasthan Royals (RR) at the Dubai International Stadium on Wednesday. His fastest delivery was timed 156.2 kmph that shattered an eight-year-old record of Dale Steyn (154.4 kmph).

The South African bowled DC’s third over, which was also his first of the day, and started off with a delivery that clocked 148.2 kmph. It was hit by Jos Buttler for a six. He then bowled two deliveries that were timed 152.3 kmph and 152.1 kmph, after which came his slowest ball of the over at 146.4 kmph.

Nortje, 26, then sent the fifth ball at a scarcely believable 156.2 kmph that shattered the record for the fastest ball of all time in the IPL, held by his illustrious compatriot Steyn. The veteran fast bowler had set the record while playing for Deccan Chargers in 2012. Buttler, however, ramped the delivery fine for a four.

Playing in his first IPL season, Nortje then bowled a 155.4 kmph delivery, which pushed Steyn’s 2012 ball to third on the list of all-time fastest balls in the tournament history. Buttler went for a more orthodox shot down the ground and the ball ended up flashing past him and hit the middle stump.

The opening overs of the RR innings, who were chasing a target of 162, featured an engrossing contest in which openers Ben Stokes and Buttler got their team off to a quick start. Buttler had scored 22 of nine balls while Stokes made 15 off as many when Nortje provided DC the breakthrough.

Nortje then pushed Steyn down to fourth by starting the fifth over with a full delivery that clocked 154.74 kmph.

South African Kagiso Rabada, who was in the XI along with Nortje on Wednesday, had come closest to breaking Steyn’s record in the 2019 season when he sent in a delivery that clocked 154.23 kmph.
