Guterres calls for end to Israeli settlement in Palestine

“I reiterate my call on the government of Israel to immediately halt all settlement activity, which is a major obstacle to the achievement of the two-state solution, and a just, lasting and comprehensive peace,” said Guterres…reports Asian Lite News.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for an end to Israel’s settlement activity in occupied Palestinian territory, for the resumption of peace talks.

The UN remains committed to supporting Palestinians and Israelis to resolve their conflict and bringing an end to the suffering, Xinhua news agency quoted Guterres as saying on Thursday while addressing the opening session of the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People.

“I reiterate my call on the government of Israel to immediately halt all settlement activity, which is a major obstacle to the achievement of the two-state solution, and a just, lasting and comprehensive peace,” he said.

Persistent acts of violence in occupied Palestinian territory as well as Israeli movement and access restrictions and other violations of international humanitarian and human rights law exacerbate mistrust between Israelis and Palestinians and make peace less attainable, according to the UN chief.

The committee plays an important role in mobilizing international opinion and assisting Palestinians and Israelis to re-engage in meaningful negotiations, he said.

The long-agreed goal is clear: to end the occupation and realise a two-state solution on the basis of the pre-1967 borders, in line with international law, relevant UN resolutions, and bilateral agreements, with Jerusalem as the capital of both states, Guterres noted.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’ call for an international peace conference under the auspices of the UN and an expanded Middle East Quartet provides a positive opportunity to advance peace in the region, he said.

“I call on the parties to refrain from unilateral acts that can jeopardize the possibility of restarting the peace process.”

The Secretary-General also welcomed the presidential decree issued by Abbas to hold legislative, presidential and Palestinian National Council elections this year.

The holding of elections in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and in Gaza will be a crucial step toward Palestinian unity. It will give renewed legitimacy to national institutions, including a democratically elected parliament and government in Palestine, he said.

“Elections are a vital part of building a democratic Palestinian state founded on the rule of law with equal rights for all. The committee’s support to these efforts will be crucial.”

Guterres also commended the committee’s efforts to mobilize support for the UN agency for Palestinian refugees in a way that is sustainable, predictable, and long-term as Palestinian refugees need and deserve.

“Together, let us strive to uphold the values of the UN Charter as our shared framework of cooperation for the realisation of the rights of Israelis and Palestinians, the Middle East region and beyond.”

According to the Palestine Liberation Organization, about 124 Israeli settlement outposts have been built in the West Bank since the 1990s without any official approval.

Palestinian rights groups said about 700,000 settlers have been living in the West Bank and East Jerusalem since 1967.

‘Detention of protesters at illegal rallies not repression’

The ongoing protests first broke out across Russia on January 23 when thousands of people took to the streets against the detention of opposition figure and Kremlin critic, Alexei Navalny….reports Asian Lite News

The detention of protesters at the recent “illegitimate rallies” in Russia is a police measure against law violators, not an act of repression, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

The ongoing protests first broke out across Russia on January 23 when thousands of people took to the streets against the detention of opposition figure and Kremlin critic, Alexei Navalny.

Addressing a daily briefing on Thursday, Peskov said that claims of repression were emotionally charged, and added that there were multiple direct assaults on police officers during these demonstrations in support of Navalny.

While overcrowded detention centres are under pressure, all possible measures are currently being taken to tackle paperwork problems, he said.

Peskov also slammed a US Congress bill on sanctions against Russia over the Navalny case.

“We consider such approaches in bilateral relations unacceptable,” the spokesman said.

A Moscow court on Tuesday ruled to replace a suspended sentence in 2014 for Navalny with three and a half years in jail due to his breaches of probation conditions by failing to show up for regular checks.

The Kremlin critic was detained on January 17 upon his landing at a Moscow airport from Germany, where he had received medical treatment for alleged poisoning over the past few months.

Navalny’s detention sparked the mass protests in major Russian cities, including capital Moscow, St Petersburg, Novosibirsk, Yakutsk, Omsk and Yekaterinburg, during the past two weekends as his supporters took to the streets demanding his release.

Western countries have also pressured Moscow to free him.

Blinken meets Khalilzad on Afghan peace

Thursday’s development came as no meeting has been held between the Afghan Republic and the Taliban negotiators in Doha over the last 19 days after talks resumed between the two sides on January 5 following a break…reports Asian Lite News

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken met Zalmay Khalilzad, Washington’s special envoy for Afghanistan reconciliation, during which they “discussed the way forward” for long-lasting peace in the war-torn country.

Taking to Twitter following the meeting here on Thursday, Blinken said: “Great meeting with Ambassador Khalilzad to discuss the way forward in Afghanistan… Continuing to protect the US against the threat of terrorism, achieving a just and durable political settlement there, and cementing a permanent and comprehensive ceasefire.”

Also in a separate tweet, Khalilzad, who has negotiated with the Taliban for 18 months to reach an agreement, said that during the meeting, he “had the opportunity to brief Blinken on the Afghanistan peace process in the context of our continuing policy review”.

Thursday’s development came as no meeting has been held between the Afghan Republic and the Taliban negotiators in Doha over the last 19 days after talks resumed between the two sides on January 5 following a break.

The Afghan peace talks, which started on September 12, 2020, following the US-Taliban peace deal inked last February to end the war, paving the way for the withdrawal of thousands of US forces in Afghanistan and facilitate the intra-Afghan dialogue, has made little progress to achieve the goal.

Late last month in his first media address after taking office, Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby claimed that the Taliban was jeopardising the landmark agreement.

“The Taliban have not met their commitments. Without them meeting their commitments to renounce terrorism and to stop the violent attacks on the Afghan National Security Forces, and by dint of that the Afghan people, it’s very hard to see a specific way forward for the negotiated settlement,” he said at the briefing on January 28.

In response, a Taliban spokesman Mohammad Naeem told an Afghan media outlet that the group remained committed to the agreement “and we call on the other side to stay firm on its commitments”.

The war in Afghanistan, which has caused about 2,400 US military deaths, is the longest one in American history.

Former President Donald Trump had sought a full withdrawal of forces from the country, but some of his senior aides from the military and the Pentagon suggested a more cautious approach.

Currently there are about 2,500 US troops in Afghanistan.

Treaty extension will help to improve int’l security

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken held a telephonic conversation on Thursday to discuss existing problems and the prospect of cooperation between the two countries.

Lavrov congratulated Blinken on assuming office and expressed his readiness for constructive dialogue on a wide range of topics, according to a press release by the Russian Foreign Ministry, Xinhua news agency reported.

The top diplomats welcomed the extension of the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty to 2026, which will help improve the overall situation in the field of international security and strategic stability, it said.

They touched upon the issue of ensuring predictability in the field of arms control since the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty and the Treaty on Open Skies have collapsed.

Lavrov and Blinken discussed assistance to a peaceful settlement in Syria and Libya, as well as the situation in Ukraine.

Lavrov reminded Blinken of Moscow’s earlier proposals on the adoption of joint Russian-US statements on the inadmissibility of a nuclear war and on non-interference in each other’s internal affairs.

As for the case with Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, Lavrov gave detailed explanations about the need to respect Russia’s legislation and judicial system.

He in turn asked Blinken to ensure the transparency of judicial procedures when US authorities deal with protesters in connection with the results of the recent presidential election.

Lavrov confirmed that the Russian side is open for joint work to normalize the entire range of bilateral relations, including the re-functioning of Russian and US diplomatic missions, while Blinken showed readiness to organize dialogue of experts on these issues.

Both spoke in favor of establishing cooperation in the fight against coronavirus infections, including partnership in the development and improvement of vaccines.

NLD patron U Win Htein arrested

The 80-year-old patron, who is believed to be one of Suu Kyi’s trusted confidants, was taken to a district police station in Nay Pyi Taw on Thursday night…reports Asian Lite News

U Win Htein, patron of former Myanmar State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy (NLD) party, has been arrested in the wake of the military coup in the South Asian country, a top official said on Friday.

The 80-year-old patron, who is believed to be one of Suu Kyi’s trusted confidants, was taken to a district police station in Nay Pyi Taw on Thursday night, Xinhua news agency quoted Kyi Toe, a member of the party’s information committee, as saying in a social media report.

Meanwhile, former President U Win Myint and Suu Kyi have been remanded in custody for violating the National Disaster Management Law and Import-Export Law until February 15, according to a senior military official.

The Oresident and the State counsellor were detained by the military, along with other NLD officials early Monday morning just ahead of declaring the coup.

The NLD had posted a statement on its social media page demanding the release of the detained leaders, acknowledge the results of 2020 general elections and stop any disturbances which are hindering the process of convening the third parliamentary session.

After the military seized control of the country, the President’s Office declared a one-year state of emergency and the state power was handed over to Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Sen-Gen Min Aung Hlaing.

The coup was staged over the disputed results of the November 8, 2020 parliamentary polls in which the NLD obtained more than 80 per cent of the seats and increased its parliamentary majority.

The military or the Tatmadaw had called for an investigation into voting lists, alleging fraud and discrepancies.

But the Union Election Commission rejected the allegations of election fraud on January 29.

Monday’s actions reversed a 10-year period of democratic transition following 50 years of military rule.

LITE VIEW: His Master’s Voice

Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar. (File Photo: IANS)

What would the 70-odd farmers who died braving rain, bone-chilling cold on Delhi roads who may have considered Sachin Tendulkar a role model be thinking now? The ‘God’ of cricket, who was conferred the Bharat Ratna, seems to have proved that he is nothing more than a “sarkari celeb.”

His Twitter statement on Wednesday urging those “foreigners” to keep off farmers protest hasn’t gone down too well.

Since Tendulkar was conferred the highest civilian award in 2014, he has been the mascot of the Mumbai India IPL team, which is owned by Reliance Industries. The Mukesh Ambani-led company now finds itself in the center of the contentious farm laws along with the Adani Group.

Since his cricket career which began in 1989, why has the ‘God of cricket’ found his voice now on social and political issues 32 years hence?

During his stint as Rajya Sabha MP, the cricketer held the ignominious record of 7.3% attendance in Parliament. As per Parliament records, Tendulkar attended just 29 of the nearly 400 Parliament sessions, asked just 22 questions and introduced no bills. The fiver year stint earned him nearly Rs 1 crore (Rs 86.23 lakh to be precise).

What is more intriguing is Tendulkar’s timing of the tweet, it took a foreign pop singer, foreign climate and an international porn actor to wake up the former Test cricketer and ex-MP to back the government?

While critics have panned Tendulkar for his message, Right-wing trolls have welcomed his “awakening.” Many said the “God has spoken,” while others saw it as the cricketer’s coming of age. Whatever the reason may be, it seems that the “Little Master” is following the “Master’s” call.

Turkey, China going all out to fill Pak defence arsenal

China and Turkey are going all out to consolidate Pakistan’s defence arsenal even as the country’s external debt continues to accumulate and the Imran Khan government finds itself on a sticky wicket yet again ahead of this month’s plenary meeting of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), the global money laundering and terrorist financing watchdog…reports Ateet Sharma.
While ‘iron brother’ China launched a second advanced warship for Pakistan in Shanghai last week, Turkey – its only other all-weather ally – also held a welding ceremony of third ship of MILGEM class corvettes for Pakistan Navy at the Istanbul Naval Shipyard (INSY).

The launch of the second Type 054 Class Frigate was held at Hudong-Zhonghua Shipyard on Friday with the Pakistani Navy highlighting how warship’s induction will enhance country’s maritime defence and deterrence capabilities.

The first of the four warships of Type-054 Class Frigate constructed by China for Pakistan was launched in August, last year.

“Technologically advance platform fitted with latest Surface, Subsurface, Anti-air weapons, Combat Management System & Sensors will strengthen PN combat capabilities & maintain peace & stability in IOR,” Pakistan Navy tweeted Saturday.

In Istanbul, Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Pakistan’s Ambassador to Turkey Muhammad Syrus Sajjad Qazi jointly kicked off the MILGEM class corvettes project by performing the block welding.

The contract for four MILGEM class corvettes for Pakistan Navy with concurrent Transfer of Technology (ToT) was signed with ASFAT Inc, a Turkish state owned Defence contractor in 2018. The ToT entails construction of two corvettes at Istanbul Naval Shipyard and another two at Karachi Shipyard and Engineering Works (KS&EW).

Erdogan highlighted deep-rooted relationship between the “two strategically aligned nations” and underscored the defence collaboration for construction of MILGEM class warships as major milestone in Pak-Turkey defence ties.

The MILGEM class corvettes will be surface platforms equipped with modern surface, subsurface and anti-air weapons and sensors integrated through a network centric Combat Management System.

These ships, said Pakistan Navy, will augment its “kinetic punch” and will significantly contribute in maintaining peace, stability and “balance of power” in Indian Ocean Region.

Pakistan Navy’s top officers are now regular visitors to Ankara and Beijing, just like the country’s ships now frequently call at their ports.

Last month, after taking over the command of the Pakistan Navy in October, Admiral Muhammad Amjad Khan Niazi visited the Turkish Fleet Headquarters at Golcuk Naval Base and also the Istanbul Naval Shipyards where he was briefed on the current status of the ongoing construction of the first corvette of the ‘Jinnah’ Class Corvette Project.

During his visit, Niazi, who was conferred with ‘Legion of Merit of the Turkish Armed Forces’ by Turkish Naval Forces Commander Admiral Adnan Ozbal, also called on Turkey’s President of Defence Industries Ismail Demir.

After being commissioned in November at the Black Sea Port of Constanta in Romania, Pakistan Navy’s new Corvette e a Damen OPV 1900 named PNS Tabuk – visited Turkey’s Port Aksaz on her return passage to Pakistan. On departing the port, Tabuk participated in coordinated patrol with Turkish Navy ships.

The Commanding Officer of the ship, in a meeting with Aksaz Naval Base Commander Rear Admiral I Kurtulus Sevinc discussed “matters of mutual interest”, including Kashmir.

Discussing Kashmir to further foster the “brotherly relations” between both the countries comes naturally to Pakistan and Turkey.

Pakistan Navy Ship Zulfiqar, with embarked helicopter, had visited Port Aksaz in October 2020 to participate in Turkey-led Mavi Balina 2020 multinational Anti Submarine Warfare exercise. During the stay, Commanding Officer of the ship had called on senior naval officials and dignitaries, including Sevinc and Flag Officer Commanding Aksaz Naval Base to discuss Kashmir.

In March, another Pakistan Navy Ship Yarmook – the first ship commissioned at Constanta Port – had visited Golcuk during its voyage back to “develop interoperability” with Turkish Navy. The Commanding Officer of PNS Yarmook had also called on important authorities of Turkish Navy to discuss Kashmir.

At the same time, China continues to strengthen Pakistan Navy, enhancing its ability with new assets and joint Sino-Pakistani naval exercises.

“Pakistan Navy is enlarging its marines, which now operates from Gwadar into a division-sized force. China funds the marines defending Chinese interests at Gwadar and PN’s Special Service Group Navy (SSGN) originally trained by US Seals is planned to grow into a brigade-sized force by 2023. China is enabling Pakistan to set up a network-enabled warfare capability with satellite feeds to monitor the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) like the Indian Navy employs Centrix provided by the US Navy,” Commodore Ranjit B Rai, a former Naval Intelligence and Operations Director, wrote in Indian Defence Review, last year.

Meanwhile, India and the new Joe Biden administration in Washington will be closely watching the proceedings at this month’s Aman-2021 exercise scheduled to be held in the water area of the Pakistani port of Karachi.

Besides China and Turkey, the Russian Navy has confirmed the participation of its Black Sea Fleet (BSF), including a frigate, a patrol ship, a rescue tug, a Marine Corps unit, a demining squad and a sea-based helicopter, in the exercise.

It is expected to be held at around the same time when FATF meets virtually from February 22 to 25 to consider blacklisting Pakistan as it continues to abate terrorism.

A total of 10 million doses of raw materials for Covid-19 vaccine from the Chinese biopharmaceutical company Sinovac Biotech reached Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Indonesia’s city of Tangerang, an official said.

“The government is trying hard efforts to tackle Covid-19, including through vaccination,” the Health Ministry’s Secretary General Oscar Primadi said, Xinhua news agency reported on Tuesday.

With the arrival, there are 28 million doses of Covid-19 vaccine in Indonesia, Primadi noted, adding that among them, three million doses were ready to use, and another 25 million doses arrived in the form of raw materials.

Bambang Heriyanto, Corporate Secretary of Indonesian state-run vaccine manufacturer Bio Farma, said 15 million doses of vaccine raw materials that arrived in Indonesia on January 12 are still under process for the ready-to-use vaccine, targeted to be completed on February 11.

Heriyanto said the raw materials that arrived Tuesday would be processed starting from February 13 and expected to be completed on March 20.

Indonesia is targeting to administer the Covid-19 vaccine to 181.5 million people until next year.

A spokesperson for the Health Ministry’s Covid-19 Vaccination said more than 500,000 medical workers have so far been vaccinated.

The target is that 1.5 million medical workers would have been vaccinated before the end of February.

“After that, 17.4 million public workers will be vaccinated,” the spokesperson said.
