Palestine denounces Moroccan-Israeli normalisation deal

Morocco is the fourth Arab state that has recognised Israel in recent months after the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Sudan…reports Asian Lite News

A senior Palestinian official has condemned the normalization deal between Morocco and Israel, stressing that it was “unacceptable and harmful to the Palestinian issue”.

“Normalizing ties with Israel will harm the Palestinian cause,” Xinhua news agency quoted Nabil Shaath, adviser to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas for international relations, as saying in a statement late Thursday.

He stressed that the Palestinian leadership will always reject such “unacceptable agreements”.

On Thursday, Israel and Morocco agreed to full diplomatic relations.

The announcement was made by US President Donald Trump in a series of tweets, calling the development as “a massive breakthrough for peace in the Middle East”, adding that Washington recognises Morocco’s sovereignty over the entire Western Sahara territory.

Trump’s senior adviser and son-in-law Jared Kushner told reporters in a briefing call on Thursday that Morocco and Israel would open liaison offices in Rabat and Tel Aviv and begin direct flights.

Morocco is the fourth Arab state that has recognised Israel in recent months after the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Sudan.

Morocco haf severed relations with Israel in 2000 after the second Palestinian uprising.

Senior PLO official Hanan Ashrawi steps down

President Abbas accepted Ashrawi’s resignation on Wednesday “upon her request after she submitted an official resignation letter a few days ago”…reports Asian Lite News

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas accepted the resignation of Hanan Ashrawi, the member of the Executive Committee of Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), a state media report said.

President Abbas accepted Ashrawi’s resignation on Wednesday “upon her request after she submitted an official resignation letter a few days ago”, Xinhua news agency quoted the report as saying.

Ashrawi did not reveal the reasons for her resignation.

“The time has come for real reform in our official institutions and the PLO, to revive them and respect their powers so that the truth is the title of official political decision-making for everyone,” she said.

Ashrawi added that “the time has come to practice democracy, hold general elections, and reach true national unity through the practice of democracy”.

She had been a member of the Executive Committee of the PLO since 2009 and was re-elected to the group in 2018.

The development comes ahead of the Palestinian general elections scheduled to be held February and March 2021.

They were originally scheduled to be held in April and October 2014 in accordance with the Fatah–Hamas Gaza Agreement of April 2014.

However, the elections were then delayed indefinitely.

Israel mulls alternatives to night curfew

On Monday, Israel’s coronavirus cabinet decided to impose the curfew due to the recent rise in Covid-19 cases…reports Asian Lite News

The night curfew in Israel, which was scheduled to begin on Wednesday, is likely to be cancelled, country’s state-owned Kan News has reported.

On Monday, Israel’s coronavirus cabinet decided to impose the curfew due to the recent rise in Covid-19 cases, Xinhua reported.

However, legal difficulties, pointed out by Israel’s Deputy Attorney General Raz Nizri, will prompt the Israeli government to consider other restrictions at its meeting on Wednesday.

The difficulties came from the position of the Israeli health ministry, according to which the curfew is ineffective, and this can lead to petitions to the High Court against the legality of the curfew, said the report.

Another cabinet decision, which is not expected to be canceled, regulated that passengers returning from abroad would be required to undergo a coronavirus test at the airport as a condition for entering quarantine at home. Those who refuse to take the test would be required to enter quarantine at hotels.

Hasina recalls Pak’s 1971 brutalities

“The pain and trauma inflicted on us in 1971 motivate us to seek an end to genocide anywhere and demand justice for the victims of this heinous crime,” said Hasina…reports Sumi Khan

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said that on March 25, 1971, the Pakistani occupation forces unleashed brutal mass killings on the innocent civilian population of erstwhile East Pakistan.

The massacre was carried out to deny the “Bangalee” nation their legitimate demand for self-determination and annihilate their ethnic political identity, the PM added.

Hasina also said: “On this day, let us reaffirm our commitment to ‘never again’ to genocide for the sake of humanity and global peace.”

“The pain and trauma inflicted on us in 1971 motivate us to seek an end to genocide anywhere and demand justice for the victims of this heinous crime,” she added.

“On the occasion of the ‘International Day of Commemoration and ‘Dignity of the Victims of the Crime of Genocide and of the Prevention of this Crime’ as well as the ’72nd anniversary of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide’, Bangladesh joins the international community in paying solemn tribute to the victims of genocide throughout the history of the world and reiterates its firm commitment to preventing such heinous crimes,” Hasina said.

The PM added that Bangladesh is among the few countries that have experienced one of the worst forms of genocide during the War of Liberation in 1971.

Hasina called upon the international community to undertake concerted action to address the root causes of genocide, identifying early signs and ensuring justice to the victims to prevent the recurrence of any future genocide anywhere in the world.

She added that to pay deep homage to the victims of the Genocide of 1971 and uphold the country’s commitment to prevent these crimes against humanity, the country’s parliament has decided to observe March 25 as ‘Genocide Day’ and accordingly the day is observed every year in Bangladesh and all over the world by the Bangladeshi people, who love their motherland.

Australia blames China for breaking trade deal

China has imposed sanctions or halts on Australian goods such as grain, wine and beef this year. This has caused alarm in Australia, as China is its biggest trading partner…reports Asian Lite News

The Australian government has accused China of undermining their free trade agreement over a series of actions by Beijing against Australian export goods.

In his strongest comments yet, Australian Trade Minister Simon Birmingham said China had “targeted” a dozen Australian goods amid tensions between the countries, the BBC reported on Wednesday.

China has imposed sanctions or halts on Australian goods such as grain, wine and beef this year. This has caused alarm in Australia, as China is its biggest trading partner.

“We continue to raise issues of apparent potential, discriminatory actions targeted against Australia,” Birmingham said, adding Australia was “considering all dispute settlement options”.

China buys more than a third of Australia’s exports, and accounts for 27 per cent of two-way trade. Beijing has accused Australia of “unfriendly” and “hostile” attitudes towards China, amid a deteriorating political row.

Last week, Australia reacted angrily to a Chinese official’s post on Twitter which included a graphic, fake image of an Australian soldier killing an Afghan child.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison demanded an apology from Beijing, which was rejected.

The two nations signed a free trade agreement in 2015, which reduced tariffs and increased access to dozens of goods.

But since May, China has imposed successive sanctions on Australian goods including barley, meat and dairy products, timber, coal and cotton.

More recently, it placed tariffs of up to 200 per cent on Australian wine – citing allegations of illegal trade practices, which are disputed by Australia.

On Wednesday, Birmingham confirmed another Australian beef producer had also been blocked.

“The targeted nature of Chinese government measures on Australian goods raises concerns about China’s adherence to the letter and spirit of its ChAFTA (free trade agreement) and WTO obligations,” he told Australia’s Senate.
