UAE steps up rescue efforts in Philippines

The ERC’s humanitarian support includes the distribution of urgent relief aid by its delegation, currently in the Philippines to bring assistance to thousands of families in many affected areas…reports Asian Lite News

The Emirates Red Crescent, ERC, has intensified its humanitarian efforts to assist, and rescue, people affected by Typhoon Goni in the Philippines.

The ERC’s humanitarian support includes the distribution of urgent relief aid by its delegation, currently in the Philippines to bring assistance to thousands of families in many affected areas, in coordination with the UAE Embassy in Manila and the Philippine Red Cross.

The aid is part of phase I of the ERC’s relief programme aimed at providing the essential needs of those affected by the typhoon, including food, shelter and medical supplies, in implementation of the directives of Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, and under the monitoring of Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler’s Representative in Al Dhafra Region and Chairman of the ERC.

The ERC delegation will continue to send urgent relief supplies to the most affected areas, despite the difficulties caused by damaged roads and infrastructure. It is also considering all options for reaching out to people in need in these areas.

Upon arriving in the Philippine capital, Manila, the delegation met with Richard Gordon, Chairman of the Philippine Red Cross, in the presence of representatives of the UAE Embassy, to discuss ways of reinforcing their coordination in providing relief services to the affected.

Iran, Iraq to step up defence cooperation

“The purpose of this meeting is to develop and deepen security in both Iran and Iraq, but of course Iraq has faced several conspiracies in recent years.said Baqeri…reports Asian Lite News

Chiefs of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Major General Mohammad Baqeri has announced the final steps in the drafting of an Iran-Iraq defence cooperation charter, after meeting Iraqi Defence Minister Juma Inad Saadoun.

“The two countries have prepared a charter that is now in its final stages and will be signed in the near future,” Xinhua news agency quoted Baqeri as saying on the sidelines of the meeting with Saadoun on Sunday.

“The purpose of this meeting is to develop and deepen security in both Iran and Iraq, but of course Iraq has faced several conspiracies in recent years.

“And now, as the Americans seek to redeploy terrorists in the region, this cooperation will provide better security for Iraq,” he added.

The Iraqi Minister arrived in Tehran on November 13 to discuss military cooperation, official news agency IRNA reported.

Baqeri said that Iran-Iraq defence cooperation will improve security in Iraq in the current situation, when the US “is seeking to redeploy terrorists in the region”.

The two sides also discussed issues related to the defence industry, security in the common border, and cooperation under the form of exchanges of experience, joint military exercises and training, he added.

Israel will not tolerate any attacks: Netanyahu

Israel responded to the rockets with a counter-attack on Hamas positions in Gaza….reports Asian Lite News

Israel has issued a warning that it will launch a heavy attack on the Gaza Strip if rocket fire from the besieged enclave continued.

Speaking at a weekly cabinet meeting on Sunday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that his country “will not tolerate any attacks”, referring to two rockets launched on Saturday night from Gaza toward Israel, reports Xinhua news agency.

No group immediately assumed responsibility for the rockets.

However, Israeli Defence Minister Benny Gantz said Hamas, an Islamist Palestinian movement that runs Gaza, should be held accountable.

He said the government is working “in several directions, operational and others, to bring long-term tranquility” to the area.

Israel responded to the rockets with a counter-attack on Hamas positions in Gaza.

No casualties or injuries were reported on both sides.

Local Israeli media reported that the army was looking into the possibility that the rocket fire was not intentional but due to a malfunction caused by a lightning storm.

Israel to set up ‘homes’ in East Jerusalem

The settlements are located in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, lands captured by Israel in the 1967 Middle East war…reports Asian Lite News

The Israeli government has promoted a plan for hundreds of new settlement homes in a sensitive area near East Jerusalem.

In a tender issued on its website on Sunday, the Israel Land Authority invited contractors to bid for the construction of 1,257 housing units in Givat Hamatos, a settlement neighbourhood of Jerusalem, reports Xinhua news agency.

The last date for submitting the biddings is January 18, 2021, the Land Authority said.

The settlements are located in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, lands captured by Israel in the 1967 Middle East war.

Most of the international community considers the settlements a violation of international law and a hurdle to peace.

The new construction is expected to trigger anger among the Palestinians.

Givat Hamatos is located in some of the last lands connecting the Palestinian areas of the West Bank and East Jerusalem, where the Palestinians hope to establish the capital of their future state.

The Palestinians want to establish an independent state on the territories occupied by Israel in 1967 with Jerusalem as its capital by way of peace talks with the Jewish state.

The last round of peace negotiations between Palestinians and Israelis, sponsored by the US, broke down in 2014 because of their deep divisions on issues related to Israeli settlements and the Palestinian statehood.

The Palestinian Authority severed its diplomatic ties with the administration of US President Donald Trump after he declared Jerusalem as Israel’s capital in 2017.

Yemeni court to execute 21 for spying

There was no comment yet from the coalition or the Yemeni government….reports Asian Lite News

A court controlled by Yemen’s Houthi rebels has sentenced 21 men to death for allegedly spying for the Saudi-led coalition which backs the war-torn country’s government, according to a report.

The Houthi-run al-Masirah TV’s report on Saturday did not identify the defendants, but said they are all Yemenis, reports Xinhua news agency.

There was no comment yet from the coalition or the Yemeni government.

The ruling by the court in the Houthi-held capital Sanaa was the latest in a series of closed-door trials of political opponents held by the Houthis.

Yemen has been mired in civil war since late 2014, when the Iran-backed Houthi group seized control of several northern provinces and forced the Saudi-backed government of President Abd-Rabbuh Mansour Hadi out of Sanaa.

The Saudi-led military coalition intervened in the Yemeni conflict in March 2015 to support Hadi’s government.

The war has killed tens of thousands of people, displaced nearly 4 million and pushed more than 20 million to the brink of famine.

RCEP, world’s biggest trade bloc comes alive

China and 14 other Asian countries have agreed to form the world’s largest free trade bloc with nearly a third of all economic activity.

The Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, or RCEP, was signed virtually on Sunday on the sidelines of the annual summit of the 10-nation Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

“RCEP will soon be ratified by signatory countries and take effect, contributing to the post-COVID pandemic economic recovery,” said Nguyen Xuan Phuc, Prime Minister of Vietnam, which hosted the ceremony as ASEAN chair, Al Jazeera reported.

The report said RCEP will take tariffs lower between member countries. It will account for 30 per cent of the global economy, 30 per cent of the global population and reach 2.2 billion consumers, according to Vietnam.

In addition to the 10 ASEAN nations, the accord includes China, Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand, but not the US.

Officials said the accord leaves the door open for India, which dropped out due to fierce domestic opposition to its market-opening requirements, to rejoin the bloc, Al Jazeera said.

The accord is a coup for China, by far the biggest market in the region with more than 1.3 billion people, allowing Beijing to cast itself as a “champion of globalisation and multilateral cooperation” and giving it greater influence over rules governing regional trade, Gareth Leather, senior Asian economist for Capital Economics, said in a report.

Al Jazeera said the US is absent from RCEP and the 11-nation Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) deal that US President Donald Trump pulled out of shortly after taking office. This leaves the world’s biggest economy out of two trade groups that span the fastest-growing region on earth.

India had on Saturday summoned the Charge d’Affaires of the Pakistan High Commission to lodge a strong protest over unprovoked ceasefire violation in Jammu and Kashmir on the festive occasion of Diwali.

In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs said, “The Charge d’Affaires of the High Commission of Pakistan was summoned by the Ministry of External Affairs today and a strong protest was lodged over unprovoked ceasefire violations by Pakistani forces, on multiple sectors along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir on 13 November 2020, resulting in the death of four innocent civilians and serious injuries to 19 others”.

“India condemns, in the strongest terms, the deliberate targeting of innocent civilians by Pakistani forces,” MEA said.

“It is highly deplorable that Pakistan chose a festive occasion in India to disrupt peace and perpetrate violence in J&K through coordinated firing along the length of the LoC using heavy caliber weapons, including artillery and mortar on Indian civilians,” the statement by India said.

India also strongly protested Pakistan’s continued support to cross border terrorist infiltration into India, including through supporting cover fire provided by Pakistan forces. Pakistan was once again reminded of its bilateral commitment to not allow any territory under its control to be used for terrorism against India in any manner.

Acting Kyrgyzstan Prez steps down to run in election

Under current Kyrgyz law, anyone serving in an acting or interim capacity as president cannot run in an election for the post…reports Asian Lite News

Acting President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Zhaparov has stepped down to run for presidency in January 2021, his press service reported.

Zhaparov resigned on Saturday in connection with the nomination of his candidacy for the post of President, Xinhua news agency quoted the press service as saying in a statement.

Under current Kyrgyz law, anyone serving in an acting or interim capacity as president cannot run in an election for the post.

He submitted his documents to the Central Election Commission (CEC) on Saturday morning.

At the moment, 62 people have applied to run for the presidency, according to data of the CEC.

The election is scheduled for January 10, 2021.

Zhaparov first became prime minister in the midst of protests against the official results of parliamentary elections last month.

The demonstrations prompted authorities to cancel the results of the poll and sparked a political crisis that led to the resignation of the government and President Sooronbai Jeenbekov.

Jeenbekov was the third President in the Central Asian nation toppled by anti-government protests since 2005.

After Jeenbekov left office in October, Japarov, who during the protests had been released from prison where he was serving a sentence for kidnapping a political rival, was handed presidential powers as well.

Azerbaijan, Armenia exchange bodies of dead soldiers

The Russian peacekeeping force stationed in the Nagorno-Karabakh region also took part in the event, Azerbaijan’s Defence Ministry said in a statement…reports Asian Lite News

Azerbaijan and Armenia exchanged the bodies of a number of servicemen who were killed during the fighting around the city of Shusha in the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region, according to the defence authorities here.

An unspecified number of bodies of the Armenian armed forces were handed over on Saturday, while the bodies of six Azerbaijani servicemen were returned, Xinhua news agency reported.

The Russian peacekeeping force stationed in the Nagorno-Karabakh region also took part in the event, Azerbaijan’s Defence Ministry said in a statement.

Meanwhile, the search and retrieval of the conflict victims are underway with the involvement of the Russian peacekeepers and the Red Cross, according to the Defence Ministry of Armenia.

The exchange was organized in accordance with Article 8 of a joint statement signed on November 8 by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Russian President Vladimir Putin, agreeing on a complete ceasefire in the conflict-ridden region.

As agreed, Russia has deployed a peacekeeping contingent consisting of 1,960 servicemen with small arms, 90 armoured personnel carriers, and 380 vehicles to the region.

This is the fourth ceasefire since last month.

The three other ceasefires — two brokered by Russia (October 10, 17) and one by the US (October 26) — collapsed after Armenia and Azerbaijan traded accusations and attacks.

A new round of armed conflict broke out on September 27 along the contact line of the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region, which is internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan but mostly governed by the Republic of Artsakh, a de facto independent state with an Armenian ethnic majority.

The area experienced flare-ups of violence in the summer of 2014, April 2016 and in July this year.

Armenia and Azerbaijan went to war over the region in 1988-94, eventually declaring a ceasefire.

However, a settlement was never reached.

Iran turns down report on killing Al Qaeda leader in Tehran

In a statement on Saturday, Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh said that the story by the western media is a “scenario and fabricated information created by the US and Israel”…reports Asian Lite News

Iran’s Foreign Ministry has denied a media report about the recent killing of an Al Qaeda leader in the capital Tehran.

On November 13, the New York Times reported that Al Qaida’s second-in-command Muhammad al-Masri was killed by the Israeli operatives in Tehran in August, reports Xinhua news agency.

The newspaper report cited US intelligence officials as saying that al-Masri, accused of being one of the masterminds of two deadly 1998 attacks on American embassies in Africa, was gunned down by two assassins on motorcycles on August 7.

But in a statement on Saturday, Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh said that the story by the western media is a “scenario and fabricated information created by the US and Israel”.

The western media report is “a false accusation” levelled by the US officials against Iran, and the Islamic republic “strongly denies the presence of terrorist members in the country”, he added.

“In order to dodge responsibility for the criminal activities of this group and other terrorist groups in the region, Washington and Tel Aviv from time to time try to paint Iran as being tied to these groups through weaving lies and leaking fabricated information to the media.”
