Over 15,000 Indian Tech Talents Flock to Canada, Fuel Tech Boom

This surge in migration positions India as the largest contributor to Canada’s expanding tech workforce…reports Manjari Singh

Canada has emerged as a global magnet for tech industry talent, with an astonishing 15,000 Indian tech workers making their way to the country in the span of just 12 months, from April 2022 to March 2023.

This surge in migration positions India as the largest contributor to Canada’s expanding tech workforce, as highlighted by a recent joint report from The Technology Councils of North America (TECNA) and Canada’s Tech Network (CTN).

In a remarkable trend, out of a total of more than 32,000 tech professionals who sought greener pastures, a whopping 15,097 chose Canada as their new home, underscoring the nation’s allure in the tech industry.

Following India on the list of contributors was Nigeria, with 1,808 tech workers making their journey to Canada. Experts attribute this phenomenon to Canada’s immigration-friendly policies and its competitive edge in terms of labor costs.

Two Canadian cities stand out as prime beneficiaries of this influx of global tech talent: Mississauga and Montreal.

Mississauga, boasting a robust community of nearly 1,000 IT firms and an impressive workforce of over 300,000 tech experts, has become a hub for tech innovation. Meanwhile, Montreal has witnessed a remarkable 31 percent growth in its tech ecosystem between 2015 and 2020.

The report, titled ‘Tech Workforce Trends: The Migration of Tech Workers and Tech Jobs Since the Pandemic’, sheds light on the significance of this surge in tech migration.

It posits that the substantial migration of tech workers fulfills the critical demand for skilled professionals, a need that has become even more pronounced amid the ongoing global talent scarcity. This influx of tech talent is seen as a promising indicator of a prosperous future for Canada’s tech industry.

The migration data further reveals intriguing details about the tech worker flow. Mississauga welcomed 1,900 tech professionals from across the world, while Montreal witnessed the arrival of 959 tech experts during the specified period from April 2022 to March 2023.

Although the majority of the influx is attributed to India, Nigeria, and Brazil, the report also highlights the growing attraction of Canadian tech opportunities for American talent. Notably, Canada is drawing tech professionals from major US cities such as Washington DC, Boston, Chicago, and Philadelphia.

As part of its strategy to lure top-tier tech talent, Canada has introduced an initiative offering open work permits for H1-B visa holders from the US. This move is expected to greatly benefit Indian professionals, who comprise nearly 75 percent of H1-B visa holders in the United States.

The surge of Indian tech workers to Canada not only underscores the country’s appeal in the global tech industry but also signifies the potential for Canada’s tech workforce to thrive in the years ahead. With its inclusive policies and burgeoning tech ecosystems, Canada is poised to become an even greater force on the international tech stage.

Khalistan Dreams Unchecked as Canadian Sikhs Shrug Off Separatist Call

In ON’s Brampton City near Toronto, a very successful group of Punjabis engaged in the trucking business, employing over 100 young Sikh immigrants, viewed the Khalistan movement as a sheer waste of time. …reports Rajinder Singh Taggar

Most Sikhs settled in Canada are not interested in buying anything from the shops opened by the Khalistanis, who are failing to find sufficient ground to push forward their separatist agenda.

The consulting editor of Khalsa Vox recently travelled to parts of the two prominent provinces of Canada, Ontario (ON) and British Columbia (BC), to get a feel of the so-called Khalistan movement that periodically finds space in the media reports from abroad. Requests to some managers of the Khalistan market in Toronto and Vancouver to grant an on camera audience turned futile.

In BC’s Surrey, this correspondent contacted manager of Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara, Harjit Singh, to seek an audience with the members of the management of the Sikh temple once headed by Late Hardeep Singh Nijjer, India’s designated terrorist. There was no response to the request. In ON’s Toronto City, a similar request was made – through a journalist friend – to Bhagat Singh, a son of Lakhbir Singh Rode (nephew of Jarnail Singh Bhinderanwale), chief of International Sikh Youth Federation (ISYF). Later the journalist conveyed what Bhagat Singh said: “I will not talk to the Indian media.” Efforts to feel and understand the Khalistani perspective thus failed.

Khalistan

In order to have feel of ground realities, this correspondent decided to meet a cross section of the Sikh Diaspora in parts of Canada.

In ON’s Brampton City near Toronto, a very successful group of Punjabis engaged in the trucking business, employing over 100 young Sikh immigrants, viewed the Khalistan movement as a sheer waste of time. The three partners of the company were unanimous in saying: “They (Khalistanis) have opened shops to collect money by misguiding people who do not have much work to do”, adding “Why don’t they go to Punjab to fight it out where Khalistan is to be made.”

In ON’s Markham City, a retired Sikh Army man minced no words when he said that ‘saare ujjad ikthe hoye ne’ (they all are illiterate people)…’dharm de naam te Gurdwarea vich baith ke siasat krr rahe ne’ (in the name of religion, sitting in Gurdwaras, they are playing politics).

A radio host in Toronto informed Khalsa Vox that the majority of the Sikhs in Canada do not like their (Khalistanis) activities but, as they are a small violent group, none wants to take a risk. “There are divisions within the separatists, each accusing the other of being ‘touts’ of Pakistan or the Indian agencies,” the radio host disclosed. Such accusations linking Gurpatwant Singh Pannun of Sikhs For Justice (SFJ) to Indian agencies are too common to hear. Pannun is the one who spearheads the Referendum 2020 voting exercise abroad.

In BC’s Kelowna City, this correspondent hired taxis as many as 8-times in three days of stay. All the drivers were young Punjabi Sikhs. During the short duration intra-city journey, none of the drivers expressed solidarity with the Khalistan movement. These drivers originally hailed from villages falling in Bathinda, Hoshiarpur, Faridkot, Gurdaspur, Ludhiana and Jalandhar districts. Only one seemed to be a fence sitter as he said, “I am not inclined towards activities of Khalistanis per se, but the topic needed to be discussed at length to reach at a conclusion.

A granthi at a Gurdwara in Montreal expressed his dismay as the management had put up pictures of some of the slain “terrorists” in the ‘langar’ hall in the basement of the Sikh temple. He strongly opposed suffixing the word ‘shaheed’ with the name of Deep Sidhu, founder of ‘Waris Punjab De’, who died in a road accident while travelling with his girl friend.

A group of high-earning Punjabi IT professionals working in Canada’s capital city of Ottawa reacted very candidly when asked to give their views on Khalistan: “Bhaji chhado, kehdia fizool gallan vich pe gaye ho…chalo glass chuko’. (Brother, leave it. Why are you getting into a trash topic…pick up your glass). Even after the evening get-to-gather, the young boys next morning did not exhibit any interest in the subject. Apparently, life for them was too good in a land of opportunities and they had no time for a non-issue.

Canada Mulls Student Cap Amid Rising Housing Struggles

The opposition Conservative Party says the ruling Liberals has not done enough to tackle the housing crisis…reports Asian Lite News

The Canadian government is considering a cap on the number of international students to address the growing housing crisis, one of the main goals of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s new cabinet.

The country hosted more than 8,00,000 international students last year, with 2,26,000 of the 5,49,570 study permits going to Indians in 2022, according to the government data.

On being asked whether a cap could be imposed on international students, Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Minister Sean Fraser told reporters: “I think that’s one of the options that we ought to consider.

“The government has not yet made a decision… I think we need to do some serious thinking here,” Fraser told reporters on Monday.

Canada hosted more than 800,000 international students last year, with 226,000 of the 549,570 study permits going to Indians in 2022, according to the government data.

Fraser, who was previously the country’s immigration minister, also took aim at institutions, which were allegedly exploiting students and thus, worsening the housing crisis, the CBC News reported.

“When you see some of these institutions that have five, six times as many students enrolled as they have spaces for them in the building, you’ve got to start to ask yourself some pretty tough questions,” the minister said.

“There are good private institutions out there and separating the wheat from the chaff is going to be a big focus of the work that I tried to do with Miller (Immigration Minister Marc Miller).” Fraser said he plans to sit down with some of these institutions to find out ways to make it easier to find living space for those students in a tight rental market, CBC News reported.

“If they’re going to continue to bring in record numbers of students, that they are being part of the solution as well by making sure that they have a place to live,” he said.

He also took aim at institutions he accused of exploiting students and exacerbating the housing crisis.

“There are good private institutions out there and separating the wheat from the chaff is going to be a big focus of the work that I tried to do with (Immigration Minister Marc) Miller.”

The opposition Conservative Party says the ruling Liberals has not done enough to tackle the housing crisis.

As it plans to take in a record 5,00,000 new permanent residents in 2025, Canada needs to build 5.8 million new homes, which includes two million rental units, by 2030 to address housing affordability, according to Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp.

Fraser cautioned against blaming the lack of affordable housing on new immigrants.

“We have to be really, really careful that we don’t have a conversation that somehow blames newcomers for the housing challenges that have been several decades in the works in Canada,” he said.

Thousands flee homes across British Columbia from wildfires

Premier of British Columbia Daniel Eby said that a further 30,000 people are also under an evacuation alert….reports Asian Lite News

Following the state of emergency declared by Canada’s British Columbia province due to the wildfire, the evacuation order in the province has surged to 35,000 from a day earlier, reported Al Jazeera.

Premier of British Columbia Daniel Eby said that a further 30,000 people are also under an evacuation alert.

“The current situation is grim,” Eby added.

Moreover, Western Canada authorities have implored tens of thousands of people to heed evacuation orders and warned of difficult days ahead as ‘severe and fast-changing forest fires in the province intensified further.

Earlier on Friday, British Columbia province declared a state of emergency as the out-of-control fire in the province’s southern region grew more than one hundredfold in 24 hours, according to Al Jazeera.

The fire – centred around Kelowna, a city of 150,000 people and located some 300 kilometres (180 miles) east of Vancouver has partially shut down some sections of a key transit route between the Pacific coast and the rest of western Canada.

Moreover, it has also caused damage to many properties.

The province accounts for more than a third of Canada’s 1,062 active fires.

Bowinn Ma, BC’s minister of emergency management said that the situation in the popular boating and hiking destination was ‘highly dynamic’.

“We cannot stress strongly enough how critical it is to follow evacuation orders when they are issued,” she said at an afternoon news conference. They are a matter of life and death not only for the people in those properties but also for the first responders who will often go back to try to implore people to leave,” he added.

Gord Milson, the mayor of West Kelowna, described the mood in the town as “anxious” owing to the escalating wildfire, reported Al Jazeera.

“There’s just so much smoke it’s difficult to truly assess what’s occurring. But we were able to get further air support today which will help us fight the fires. But unfortunately, there were some structures lost last night and today. So, we are not out of it by any means,” he further said.

The blazes in British Columbia during the strong winds and dry lightening due to a cold mass of air interacting with hot air built-up in the humid summer.

Additionally, those conditions have further intensified existing forest fires and have also ignited new ones, Al Jazeera reported.

The deputy fire centre manager at the Kamloops Fire Centre Jerrad Schroeder, said, “We are still in some critically dry conditions and are still expecting difficult days ahead.”

Furthermore, while asking for help, officials in British Columbia said that the province is in dire need of shelter for evacuees and firefighters and have further ordered a ban on non-essential travel to make temporary accommodations available in this situation. (ANI)

China excludes Canada from list of approved group tour destinations

China’s latest move could have a significant impact on Canada’s tourism industry…reports Asian Lite News

China has lifted restrictions on group tours to multiple countries, including the US and UK, but excluded Canada from the list of nations, suggesting in a deterioration of ties after Ottawa recently accused Beijing of meddled in its internal politics, the media reported on Thursday

Last week, China added 78 countries to its list of approved destinations for group tours, excluding Canada, while adding other major G20 countries like the US, Germany, Australia, and South Korea, reports the BBC.

There are currently 138 countries on the list.

In a statement, China’s embassy in Ottawa said it was concerned that “the Canadian side has repeatedly hyped up the so-called ‘Chinese interference'”.

Beijing is focused on “protecting the safety and legitimate rights of overseas Chinese citizens and wishes they can travel in a safe and friendly environment”, the statement said.

China’s latest move could have a significant impact on Canada’s tourism industry.

Destination Canada, which promotes tourism in the country, told broadcaster CBC that China accounts for the largest source of tourist arrivals from the Asia-Pacific region.

It is also its second-largest long-haul market after the UK.

Chinese tourists were estimated to have injected over C$1 billion ($740 million) into the Canadian economy annually in years prior to the Covid pandemic.

More than 700,000 Chinese tourists travelled to Canada in 2018, with each visitor spending an average of C$2,600.

Group tours from China to Canada were first approved in 2010, and it boosted air travel and tourism between the two countries, reports the BBC.

Diplomatic relations between the two countries deteriorated rapidly earlier this year amid a series of leaks to Canadian media of reports from domestic intelligence agencies that laid out accusations that China meddled in recent federal elections.

Canada has also accused Beijing of trying to intimidate Conservative member of parliament Michael Chong and waging a disinformation campaign against him on the popular Chinese messaging app WeChat.

Chinese diplomat Zhao Wei was expelled from Canada in May over some of the allegations.

In a tit-for-tat move, China expelled Jennifer Lynn Lalonde, Canada’s diplomat in its Shanghai consulate, the BBC reported.

In 2018, bilateral relations had suffered a set back when Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou was detained in Canada at the request of the US.

Two Canadians were arrested in China not long after, in a move viewed by Canada and its allies as “hostage diplomacy”.

Meng and the two men were released after the Huawei executive came to a deal with US prosecutors.
