Pointers For Festive Season Shopping

Agra shifts focus to khadi shoes to tide over economic crisis.

Abandoning those home slippers and finally going out during festivals is something everyone is gearing up for. But with the excitement for buying that new shiny pair of footwear, one shouldnt forget the measures that should be kept in focus. Ishan Sachdeva, Director, Alberto Toressi and Ashish Jain, CEO, and Director, Von Wellx Germany share some pointers and inspirations for the festive season shopping…writes Puja Gupta.

Keep it casual: Sneaker is the safest option for any festival, but it comes with a few caveats: Some sneakers may not actually have the comfort needed to get through the entire day. Avoid slip-on styles with super-flat soles and consider an orthotic insert to add even more stability – a tactic that can also be applied to boots. Plain black or brown shoe is one of the excellent choices for all the festive season. A traditional kurta matched with tan-coloured loafer can do wonders for your look.

Break out the prints: Yes your festival shoes need to be sturdy and reliable, but that doesn’t mean they can’t reflect the fun and creativity of the festival itself. Keep an eye out for bright colours and prints when you go festival footwear shopping and make your feet stand out from the thousands of other festival-goers around you.

Top shoes trends for summer.

Go colorful: A festival is somewhere that your quirky fashion flag can fly high. Therefore, there isn’t anything wrong with rocking a bit of colour. Whether you want shoes as your statement piece or you just feel like looking like a walking rainbow, colourful shoes just work on a festival. Plus, with red shoes being such a top colour this season, you’ll totally be on-trend.

Five rules for choosing festival footwear.

The classics: Festivals always calls out the classics, may it be clothes or footwear. Choosing a formal lace up of black or brown color and pairing that with a traditional kurta or with a trouser is going to take your festive look a bar up. The formal footwear will make you stand out from the crowd and are mostly the loved style during the festivals as they are easy to pair.

The buckled sandals: If covering your toes during the festival is not something that you want to do, then sandals are the best option. One should skip the lace-ups as they need to be tied every time throughout the day and instead should choose a style with buckled straps as they are going to keep your feet in place the entire day. Comfort along with style is very important during festivals and you definitely don’t want to spend the entire day tying your footwear.

‘No Grey Area’ To Spot A Sense Of Wonder

Men, there’s a new fashion label on the block.

A new fashion label emerges with the thought that the beauty of this world lies in the symphony of juxtaposed elements — calm and chaos; light and darkness; black and white. Allowing these elements to co-exist without putting them into boxes of convenience is where the brand ‘No Grey Area’ aims to create a sense of wonder.

It tries to create a world that embodies and mirrors a society which looks to the future with positivity, transforming the grey into the known. The brand aims to create an authentic narrative, by fusing Western aesthetics and the traditional pillars from the East to create a modernised Indian design aesthetic, where contemporary luxury comes together with the street.

Men, there’s a new fashion label on the block.

Founded by Arnav Malhotra, a 25-year-old Business graduate from the University of Exeter, whose playground and training in the business of fashion has been at his family-run multi-designer concept store, Evoluzione. The main inspiration behind the brand came is New York City’s counter-culture, rule-bending fashion trends that emerged at a grassroots level which was unabashedly based on individualism, rather than focusing solely on current fashion trends.

Speaking about the launch of his label, Malhotra says, “We wanted to create a brand that explored the grey’ and spurred conversations about real points of interest. One that transcends materialistic clothing and tell stories that start conversations we are not here to preach and tell people what to think. The brand name is meant to be ironic. It is an oxymoron of itself. We want everyone to enter the grey, for there to be ‘NO GREY AREA’.

Men, there’s a new fashion label on the block.

The collection retails starting at Rs. 4,500/- onwards and includes t-shirts, resort shirts, long shirts, polos, dhoti pants, joggers, resort pants, bundis and band-galas and bomber jackets.

It’s Not Junk, But A Style Statement

Jewellery, an investment in sentiment. (Zoya Source: Instagram)

It has always bothered me when women refer to their costume or high fashion jewellery pieces as “junk”…writes Sujata Assomull

Style icon Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis’s three-strand faux pearl necklace purchased for around US $500 dollars was sold for over US $200,000 by Sotheby’s at an auction. While much of its perceived value came from provenance- the woman who wore it; women of style and substance such as Diane Vreeland, Audrey Hepburn and Coco Chanel knew that costume jewellery is far from junk, it’s a style statement. Investing in a beautifully made fashion accessory is like buying a good handbag – it can last you a lifetime.

Even though I am the proud granddaughter of a Mumbai based fine jeweller, I have always mixed my fine pieces with fashion jewellery, it just looks more effortless. At my own wedding, my diamond bangles were combined with metal bangles.

It’s bling not junk!. (Photo: Pixabay)

So when “India-Proud” fashion jewellery brands, Isharaya asked me to moderate a webinar with art historian, author and jewellery expert, Dr Usha Balakrishnan, one of my first questions to her was about India’s cultural heritage with costume jewellery. I wanted to know why so many Indian women refer to costume jewellery as junk’.

“If you go back in history, jewellery in ancient times was in fact made from items we may refer to as junk such as steel, beads and feather,” she said. It seems junk and not precious materials was the basis for jewellery, perhaps this explains where the term “junk jewellery stems from. Dr Usha added, “Costume is precious, Junk is important.”

That is so true, yes of course fine jewellery is an investment buy-and why it was given to women at marriage times was for its economic value; it was their safety net. But in contemporary dressing, jewellery is about more than just cost, it is also about how it makes you feel. I still own the first Chanel faux pearl strand bought with money saved up from a part-time job. My first boyfriend bought me a pair of Butler & Wilson faux pearl button earrings-something I kept for years and wore with as much pride as my diamond solitaires.

There is more to jewellery than adornment, status and cost-it really is about your connection to the piece, the story it tells and its craftsmanship. I have always found it very pretentious when a woman declares, “I am allergic to fake jewellery”. Of course, many people are allergic to certain metals and it is best for them to avoid fashion jewellery. By the way, if you have a nickel allergy then even keys will give you a reaction (And how come no ever says I am allergic to keys?).

Good quality costume jewellery should be made in brass, and then it will last a lifetime. Isharya uses hypoallergenic nickel-free brass which is then plated with high micron gold. Steel is another great option (a material handcrafted jewellery brand En Inde uses often), for silver, there are so many options in India (Tribe by Amrapali is my go) and Deepa Gurnani uses handcrafted textile techniques for their pieces. So there are many options for those who do have allergies.

And honestly, there is nothing like a piece of beautiful bling to add a touch of glamour into your life. Something we all need now-so even if it’s not made of precious materials let us never call our jewellery pieces “junk”.

Celebrating Joy And Positivity Through Fashion

JJ Valaya’s first virtual fashion show.

“This is an exciting time. I know it’s also a very trying time as well because a pandemic is upon us. But the pandemic is also throwing up a lot of options which perhaps nobody would have tried earlier…writes Puja Gupta.

To do a complete fashion presentation virtually is something nobody thought of in the past. To actually have the entire world as your audience and everybody has a front-row seat, I don’t think anything can get better than that,” says veteran designer JJ Valaya.

The designer launched his latest couture collection at the first-ever digital India Couture Week (ICW) and reveals, “This is a time when we need to share the joy and positive energy, to celebrate everything that is beautiful. We may not have a buoyant market, but this too shall pass, things never remain constant, life is full of ups and downs and we should celebrate the ups and learn from the lows. ‘Bursa’ is the royal nomad on a journey through time from the 13th to 17th century Ottoman empire. The opulence, the grandeur, the detail and it’s culture are part of the design story.”

JJ Valaya’s first virtual fashion show.

Valaya, who started his journey three decades ago, says “there’s no way you can replace the adrenaline rush of a show, the spectacle, the interaction between clothes and people, but adversity gives rise to opportunity. We are living in a digital era and one cannot ignore technology, the brand has to evolve with times and if the current generation is focused on screen time then that’s the new normal.”

“Being a three decade old brand has been one big adventure. Starting at a time when the industry was pretty much non existent, to a time when fashion was a buzzword and everybody is very aware of what’s happening. I think I couldn’t have wished or hoped for a better journey. From crawling to walking to stumbling to getting up, we had had many milestones, just doing everything on our own, learning from our own mistakes and growing beautifully, we’ve had a long journey of many firsts,” says the designer in the video-clip that launched his collection.

JJ Valaya’s first virtual fashion show.

He added: “What I’m really excited about today is that this is the first ever time a virtual India couture week is happening. The first time I’m showing my collection virtually. We are showing a 100 percent new collection, unlike some designers in the market. The focus is strictly on the bride and the groom, as weddings have become smaller, we are showing bridal lehengas, sarees for women and sherwani for men.”

Valaya showcased his latest line-up of wedding ensembles, inspired by the culture and arts of Turkey, “I tend to name my collection after one medieval city or the region where I’ve been inspired for. And this year’s collection is all about the magnificence of the Ottoman Empire,” he reveals.

JJ Valaya’s first virtual fashion show.

He has used burnished metallics and golds to give an antique aesthetic to the 48 pieces of lehengas, sherwanis, jackets and sarees that are embellished with Swarovski crystals, silk threads, beads, pearls and zardozi work on fabrics like silks and velvets.

Fashion Industry Affected as Saudi delays Turkish Imports

As the regional tussle between Turkey and its rivals, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates gathers heat, the flow of goods and merchandises between these countries is taking a hit.

Various fashion brands which house their production facilities in Turkey and import the finished goods to the lucrative markets in the rich Arab nations is one among the affected industries.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan

Though Saudi authorities reject the existence of such a ban of Turkish goods, various exporters from Turkey say they face long delays at Saudi ports, according to a Financial Times report.

Earlier this month, the chairman of Riyadh chamber of commerce, Ajlan al-Ajlan had called to boycott ‘everything Turkish’ in response to Ankara’s alleged involvement in the Arabian geo-political scene.

The report also states that a number of European and US fashion retailers with production facilities in Turkey are looking out for alternatives to tackle the clearance delays their goods face in Saudi Arabia.

According to the report, Spanish fashion brand Mango isn’t very much worried about the situation. “We are confident we will be able to continue with business under normal circumstances in Saudi Arabia,” the Financial Times cited a quote from the company’s sources.

Sweden’s H&M said “too early to comment on the most recently communicated trade restrictions”.

Simple Tweaks For Seasonal Skincare

With winters approaching, your skin and hair absolutely starts to feel the difference. The change of season is always a complicated time for both your skin and hair, no matter which month you are on. Though these changes happen with every season they leave some lesion to your hair and skin if neglected. As always, we put up with the changes, and know that as we adjust to the seasons, this too shall pass…writes Puja Gupta.

Although there’s nothing one can do about seasonal changes, it doesn’t mean your skin and hair has to suffer the consequences. Just as you’d change your clothing with every changing season, you should also look at changing your skin and hair care products as well. The same seasonal fluctuations should be adapted for your skin and hair care routine as well.

Rohit Murgai, Vice President, Beauty category at VLCC shares some minor tweaks you can make to bring back life to your skin and hair to flourish the changing seasons.

Skin care during the times of corona.

SKIN CARE

Due to the chills in temperature and lower humidity there is a lack of moisture in the air which can cause cracking, chapping and irritation to your skin. With these seasonal changes winter season calls for an upgrade in your skin care routine, which includes using lightweight formulas that will hydrate your skin at all times. It’s best to follow a 3 product routine to hydrate your skin to the fullest during winters.

Cleansing your skin with soap free gentle cleansers which can leave skin feeling fresh, soft, and smooth which is perfect during the colder months.

Introducing serum between cleansing and moisturizing to your routine can be a game changer as it offers moisture which makes your skin supple.

If your skin gets dry in the colder seasons, lock in that hydration with a rich moisturizer. This step will help distribute and lock water in all facial zones for long-lasting hydration and comfort.

Skincare tips for busy brides.

As we transit from colder to warmer climates, the humidity increases in the air. The elevated temperature leaves your skin oily and greasy. While hydrating, your skin remains a constant factor, as the cold weather transitions to the steamier seasons. In summers, your skin is exposed to sun, chlorine and salt water, to help your skin recover from this damage it is fundamental to exfoliate your skin and get rid of the dead cells and transition into healthier-looking skin. Along with exfoliation, one must continue with their daily routine of using water-based cleanser, gel based moisturiser and hydrating serum at all times.

Monsoon peaks the humidity levels causing your skin more damage than you can imagine. While the basic rule of ‘cleanse and moisturise’ remains the same but it’s important to adapt to a different skin care routine during monsoons. Due to the increased heat levels during monsoon, your skin tends to become oily and attracts dirt leading to awful breakouts. To overcome this, it’s important to add the below rituals to your routine.

Gentle exfoliation of the skin will make sure that you unclog your pores and get rid of the blackheads eventually leading to a bright, supple and glowing skin.

Replacing your cream based moisturiser with a non-greasy moisturiser is a must-have to enhance the skin’s natural moisture.

Another must have is a good toner which will keep your skin in check, remove dust particles and prevent breakouts.

Last but not the least, using hydrating face masks. It not only cools your skin instantly but also restores all the nutrients and hydration that our skin loses during this season.

HAIR CARE

During winters the dryness in the air can lead to dry and damaged hair. The simplest thing to do is use a super-moisturizing shampoo and conditioner along with a weekly deep-conditioning hair mask. When using hair products, it is vital to take into account where you live and what time of the year it is. Apart from that, lack of moisture can particularly weaken hair because it makes the strands brittle. Thus, wintertime products must include strand-strengthening ingredients like silk proteins, and a cocktail of collagen, hyaluronic acid and lilac.

Summer damp air upsurges the moisture on the scalp which eventually creates a breeding ground for bacteria. In order to overcome this issue choose products with ingredients that smoothens the hair’s outer layer, which are the cuticle. Hence it’s imperative to use a shampoo formulated to deep-clean scalp skin. One such ingredient to add to shampoos during summers is Pomegranate Peel’, it effectively deep-cleans without over-drying the scalp. In some cases, if the strands are very porous; due to the chemical processing or recurrent styling the pores eventually expand leading to loss of moisture. Some of the most efficient strand-strengtheners are collagen, lilac and hyaluronic acid; they help in repairing damaged hair.

Monsoon causes hair damage more than the rest of the seasons combined. The humidity amplifies the odds of getting dandruff and hair fall which means that our hair and scalp is fragile during our beloved monsoon season. To give our hair the best care, one of the tried and tested ingredients that can be used on hair during monsoons is nothing but coconut oil. Preconditioning your hair with coconut oil 15 minutes before you shower will make your hair less greasy and reduce the water your hair would ideally soak up during washing.

How To Style A Staple Shirt

5 ways to style a classic ban collar shirt.

When it comes to fashion staples in a mans wardrobe, a pristine white shirt is something one cant afford to miss. While many of us know the art of playing with colours and prints these days, we focus on how to style a staple shirt. Designer Ravi Gupta from Gargee Designers suggests how to make a statement with a ban collar shirt.

Print Player

This season, say yes to homegrown fabrics like cotton and get a classic ban collar white shirt stitched. Keep the chest pocket in place and the first two buttons open; club it with a statement blazer that offers a blend of stripes and florals. The unbuttoned look will give it an informal/casual look and create a balance with the print. You can use it for a sundowner or a dinner date.

5 ways to style a classic ban collar shirt.

Pastel Patch

Are you ready to break the rules? If yes, pair this classic with designer blazer. To make it strictly formal, keep all the buttons closed and tuck it in. Take cues from this blazer and white shirt combo and let the stylish double-pocket detailing and patch pattern break the monotony of the formal look.

Piping Perfection

This strictly formal look is for those who like detailing. To grab eye balls, once again break the rule and club your ban collar shirt with three-piece suit. To balance the symmetry, use the matching piping on the blazer and waist coat. To break the monotony, pair it with a solid shade of trousers, and let the shirt do all the talking.

5 ways to style a classic ban collar shirt.

Classic Craft

Be a safe player and pair your classic ban collar shirt with traditional and ever-stylish Nehru Jacket (Bundi). To let it all fall in place, keep the buttons neatly closed and enhance the look with a solid pocket square.

Tara Shares Hair Care Routine

Tara Sutaria: The beauty junkie.

Bollywood actress Tara Sutaria believes that girls should leave their hair in its natural form. “Keep it simple, natural and be mindful of what you’re putting in your hair,” asserts Tara, who is the new face of St. Botanica.

The “Student of the Year 2” star will be endorsing the brand’s haircare range. In a short interview with us, Tara shares her haircare regime and suggests way to prevent problems. Excerpts:

What’s your haircare routine like?

Most of the time when we’re shooting, our hair tends to get rough due to the usage of lots of styling products. So I like to follow a basic haircare routine at home, after washing my hair, I leave it to air-dry. I prefer wrapping my head in a hot towel, apart from being very calming, it makes the hair softer. Another essential practice is oiling, it makes my hair feel great.

Your go-to haircare hack?

My go-to haircare hack that I used to do as a child was applying yoghurt to my scalp and hair which helps make the hair soft, silky and smooth. Yoghurt is an ingredient that is available in every household, so I’d recommend everyone to use it.

Haircare tips you’d like to share

Best hair care tips I’d like to share are that as far as possible leave your hair in its natural form, it’s the most beautiful. The more we try to style it with products/equipment, it can really damage the hair and it’s bad in the long run. Because I’m in an industry that requires me to do so much of it, I’ve realised the goodness of simple products hence being a part of St. Botanica has opened my eyes towards sustainable and natural formulas that work for the hair. So keep it simple, natural and be mindful of what you’re putting in your hair.

Tara Sutaria shares haircare tips. (Photo: tarasutaria/Instagram)

Tell us about your association with the brand?

This is the first time I’ve been associated with a haircare brand, it feels great and I’m happy to be associated with St. Botanica and learn so much about natural haircare. I love what they stand for – simple, natural and healthy hair.

It’s so amazing to go back to the basics. It’s not every day you come across brands that stand for sustainable, paraben-free formulas. I’m proud to be associated with them and completely resonate with their philosophy. Being an all-Natural brand that offers plant-based formulas, it’s great for our hair that takes us back to the old times when people took care of their hair in a simpler way.
