Rajini To Remain In Films

In an anti-climax to his much expected political plunge, actor Rajinikanth on Tuesday announced his decision to back out citing his health condition.

In a three page letter posted on his Twitter handle, Rajinikanth said despite severe precautions taken at the shooting of “Annatthe” movie four persons tested positive for coronavirus.

The actor said while he tested negative for coronavirus, his blood pressure fluctuated and hence was hospitalised in Hyderabad.

Rajinikanth said the doctors had advised him that fluctuating blood pressure will affect his transplanted kidney.

He said the movie shooting got postponed resulting in the loss of crores of rupees and jobs for many.

“All because of my health condition. I am looking at this as a warning given to me by the God,” Rajinikanth said.

The actor also said it is not possible to bring out an uprising amongst the people campaigning via social media after floating a party.

“I have to address public meetings, meet lakhs of people,” he said.

According to him, even in a group of 120 persons (movie shooting team) he was in hospital for three days owing to some people testing positive for coronavirus. And now there is a new virus mutant.

Rajinikanth said as he is taking immunosuppressants, anti-coronavirus vaccine may not be effective and if his health gets affected his fellow political passengers might face various problems.

“Hence with much regret I am saying that I am not in a position to start political party and enter politics. Only I know the pain when I announce this,” Rajinikanth said.

The actor said without entering politics he will serve the people.

In view of his post-transplant status, labile hypertension and age, the doctors have advised him complete bed rest for one week with regular monitoring of blood pressure. He was also advised to undertake minimal physical activity and to avoid stress.

He has also been counselled to avoid any activity that increases the risk of contracting Covid-19, the hospital added.

Earlier, the hospital in the medical bulletin released revealed that there was nothing alarming in the test reports of Rajinikanth.

A couple of people on the film sets had tested positive for Covid-19. Rajinikanth was tested on December 22 for Covid but was negative. Since then, he had isolated himself and was being monitored closely.

Rajinikanth turned 70 on December 12.

On December 14, a picture was posted by Sun Pictures that showed Rajinikanth at the shoot of Annaatthe. He was seen sitting on a chair with his mask on.

Annaatthe is a Tamil action film written and directed by Siva, and produced by Kalanithi Maran under the banner Sun Pictures. The film stars Rajinikanth with Meena, Khushbu, Keerthy Suresh, Nayanthara, Prakash Raj and Jackie Shroff.

The musical score for the film is being composed by D. Imman. Vetri is in charge of cinematography while the film is being edited by Ruben.

on May 2020, Sun Pictures announced that Annaatthe is scheduled to release on Pongal. However, the film was subsequently postponed owing to delays following the Covid outbreak.

‘Right Kind Of Co-actors Enhance Creativity’

Working with the right kind of co-actors is very important for Shilpa Shukla because it helps to enhance the creativity of a project, the actress believes.writes… Ahana Bhattacharya

On what she keeps in mind before saying yes to a role, Shilpa told IANS: “It should sound good, that’s the most essential. Then, of course, who are the people making it, who are the co-actors. Because at the end of the day it’s a creative project and is only enhanced when you have the right kind of people to work with, so it is important to know the team and the vision.”

Shilpa plays a prisoner in the latest web series Criminal Justice: Behind Closed Doors, which stars Kirti Kulhari along with Pankaj Tripathi, Anupriya Goenka and Deepti Naval, Mita Vashisht and Jisshu Sengupta.

Talking about how she prepared for the role, she shared: “It was more of a text and subtext based kind of a discovery for my character, Ishani Nath. The entire jail set-up, the prison vibes and the give and take with the fabulous set of co-actors helped me to explore this character.”

Life has changed in the time of the new normal and shooting is not the same as before. How has been the experience of shooting amid the pandemic? “It was quite a scenic day because in the morning it was pouring so much and it was after five month of lockdown all of us were together on the set, which was the courtroom. Perhaps it was the first time my character was out of the prison and meeting everyone. So it actually did feel like that in a way. Of course, it was different on the set as we couldn’t hangout like we usually do on the set. But everyone had a great time shooting.”

Summing up the year of the pandemic, the actress said: “A phenomenon they say happens once in 100 years kind of a thing, I think we have realised how interdependent we basically are, so yes it was not bad. Months of solitude. There was so much happening in the world and is still happening. But the perspectives have collectively undergone a transformation and that’s remarkable.”

“We have been through such a year where we’ve lost so many people collectively in the world. So I just wish strength and joy to everyone. We don’t know how long it is going to take for things to go normal. So I am hopeful and optimistic that soon we should have a way out through this pandemic,” Shilpa signed off.

‘Criminal Justice: Behind Closed Doors’: A Bleak Prison Drama

It was billed as a courtroom thriller, but it ends up more like a bleak prison drama. The second season of Criminal Justice has its heart in the right place, highlighting a relevant issue that often takes shape of an ugly truth in homes across societal strata. Yet the show falters in execution…writes Vinayak Chakravorty.

Criminal Justice: Behind Closed Doors (on Disney+ Hotstar VIP); Cast: Kirti Kulhari, Pankaj Tripathi, Anupriya Goenka, Jisshu Sengupta, Deepti Naval, Mita Vashisht, Shilpa Shukla, Ashish Vidyarthi; Direction: Rohan Sippy and Arjun Mukerjee; Rating: * * and 1/2 )

Despite noble intentions, Criminal Justice: Behind Closed Doors is no Thappad on the face of misogyny and marital rape, the primary issues it brings to focus.

Rohan Sippy and Arjun Mukerjee’s eight-episode season starts off on a note of high drama, with the crime in question established right at the outset. Vikram Chandra (Jisshu Sengupta), hotshot lawyer and seemingly the doting husband and father, is brutally knifed in bed by his wife Anuradha (Kirti Kulhari), or Anu. The reason is amply made clear.

Although the audience is witness to the fact that Anuradha’s action is an act of extreme despair, within the framework of fiction she is instantly stamped a pariah — especially by the legal community.

Vikram was popular, and a successful face of the advocate community. No lawyer is willing to fight Anu’s case. Vikram and Anu’s daughter, closest there is to a witness, develops an aversion to her mother to begin with. As Vikram fights for his life in hospital, his mother (Deepti Naval), an influential figure, puts her weight behind the demand that Anu be punished.

That is when advocate Madhav Mishra (Pankaj Tripathi) is roped in, to defend Anu Chandra in court. Madhav takes the help of young lawyer Nikhat Hussain (Anupriya Goenka) to set up his gameplan to prove Anu’s innocence.

Apurva Asrani’s writing is hardhitting and provocative while laying bare the nightmare that awaits Anu behind bars, once she is taken in custody. However, despite those traits the storytelling fails to hold attention. Once the shock value of the jail scenes peters out, the narrative tends to get repetitive. It’s not till way into the last episodes that the courtroom drama kicks in, and when it does it is too regular in tone and pace to sustain interest. Asrani is unconvincing while setting up a slowburn impact.

The show is enriched by superlative performances, which remain the draw. Kirti Kulhari seizes an authorbacked role to deliver a career best performance. She gets very few lines as Anu, and is flawless conveying her trauma using silences. Pankaj Tripathi brings alive an interesting male prototype, too. As the primarily chauvinistic Madhav Mishra, his outlook gradually undergoes transformation as he gets deeper into the case.

Tripathi executes the graph with trademark relish. Every actor is aptly cast, and succeeds in bringing alive their respective roles written with nuance.

Criminal Justice: Behind Closed Doors deserves applause and acknowledgement for the comment it conveys, beyond the fiction inherent in the narrative. Only, the show needed a stronger sense of purpose beyond its didactic tone.

Radhika feels determined

Actress Radhika Apte has realised she was doing a lot of work just because of the fear of missing out, and says she is now determined not to take up work under pressure. The realisation dawne don her when the world was under lockdown due to the Covid-19 crisis…writes Sugandha Rawal.

“I realised that I’m grateful to get a lot of work and I have chosen work only when I wanted to do it. But there were a lot of other things I was doing with work, which are part of work and are a part of my job. I was doing these just out of FOMO,” Radhika told IANS via zoom call.

“I did so just because I didn’t want to miss out or just because others were doing it. In this time, when no one was doing anything, I was really chilled. I didn’t want to do it either,” she added.

The actress continued: “I realised, ‘Oh, I wanted to do it because others were doing it. If others don’t do it, I don’t want to do it’. So, just to distinguish between what you really want to do and what you’re doing out of pressure — that’s what I’ve learned in these few months and I don’t want to do things out of pressure anymore. Let’s see how long that lasts.”

Radhika entered the industry with a small role in the 2005 release “Vaah! Life Ho Toh Aisi!”, and went on to do films like “Shor In The City”, “Kabali”, “Phobia”, “Badlapur” and the short film “Ahalya”.

The actress is credited for breaking the stereotypical image of the Bollywood heroine with her roles in “Phobia”, “Badlapur”, “Manjhi: The Mountain Man”, “Lust Stories”, “Sacred Games”, “Pad Man” and “Ghoul”.

Radhika is currently seen in “A Call To Spy”, the international production capturing the story of three female spies during World War II. In the film, Radhika plays British spy Noor Inayat Khan, also known as Nora Baker, who served in the Special Operations Executive during the war.

Looking back at the challenges of playing the role, Radhika shared: “The biggest challenge is when you are trying to portray a real life person. It is so difficult because you have a huge responsibility, you can’t just come up with things. So, it was difficult because there are no clips or anything that you can watch. It’s just literature and photographs. She is a very unique personality, not just because of a geographical diversity, but because of a spiritual inclination, and her philosophy, and her reasons behind participating in the war.”

The spy drama is directed by Lydia Dean Pilcher, written and produced by Sarah Megan Thomas, who also stars in the film along with Stana Katic. The film released in India on Amazon Prime Video.

Bruno Mars Inspires Benny Dayal

Acclaimed multilingual singer Benny Dayal says that it was from the concerts of American pop artist Bruno Mars that he learnt how amazing an artist needs to be while performing live on the stage…Benny Dayal speaks with Siddhi Jain.

Benny recently re-created the songs of Bruno Mars in a concert by Paytm Insider’s Jim Beam Originals. His pick stems from his love for the Grammy-winning artist. Given that when Benny isn’t doing film music work, he’s jamming with his indie band, Funktuation, it’s no surprise that the works of one of contemporary funk’s biggest names inspires him greatly.

Calling Bruno Mars — the winner of 11 Grammy awards and four Guinness World Records — as one of the most relatable musicians for 80’s and 90’s music, Benny said recreating his songs is a dream-come-true for every musician and a challenge simultaneously. He adds, “He has been my current inspiration for the last four years. I have always been listening to him, however, his last song 24K Magic, his personality and virtuosity got me head over heels. I’m glad to have this opportunity by Paytm Insider’s Jim Beam Originals to recreate his music.”

In a brief chat with IANSlife, Benny shared what kind of music inspires him to create and what he listened to in his early years.

“The kind of music that inspires me to create is something that is fresh, something I haven’t heard before and is at the same time, rooted, yet is urban and earthy.

“In my earlier years, I listened to a lot of Malayalam film music, classical music, a lot of Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Queen, Sting, R&B,” he said.

Elaborating on the influence the ‘Uptown Funk’ creator has on him, he said: “Yes, Bruno Mars has inspired me a lot since the last four years since the last album came out. I got to see him perform live in Amsterdam and Abu Dhabi and it was an amazing experience because I learnt how amazing an artist needs to be on stage and at the same time carry his music, create music, produce music and at the same really excel at it. It’s just an amazing task and his (Bruno Mars’) dedication and brilliance in music is so amazing.”

Ask him which other international artists feature on his playlist, he names Billie Eilish and Dua Lipa as two of the newer artists.

For the concert, Benny said he kept a majority of the songs from Bruno Mars songs and some from his album with his band Funktuation which have been inspired from his sound a lot. “This is what happens when Bruno Mars comes into your life – he really influences your music a lot,” signs off the ‘Badtameez Dil’ singer.
