Tisca Chopra gears up for directorial debut

Actress Tisca Chopra is gearing up to start shooting her debut directorial feature film, a murder mystery, later this year. The actress, who has earlier ventured into scripting, direction and production of shorts films, is charged up to take on storytelling in the feature format.

“I guess a feature film was just waiting to happen, since I write as well. This came about quite naturally. I am really excited. It is a nice, tight murder mystery told in a very unusual style,” Tisca told IANS.

“The script for my directorial feature has been ready for almost a year now and we were ready to shoot in January last year. I hope to shoot it this year in winter because the story is such that it needs to be shot in winter. So, fingers crossed we will shoot it this year,” she adds.

What encouraged her to direct a full-length feature film? “As an actor, you are always telling other people’s stories. You are part of helping other people fulfill their vision. When you move forward, you also want to sometimes tell your own stories,” she points out.

Tisca says this was something she realised while working on the short films Chutney, which she scripted and produced, and Rubaru, which she scripted, produced and directed.

Being an actor and then switching to direction requires shift in vision, she observes.

“Directing is a completely different ball game to acting. You have so many departments and you are the head of all departments. Feature film, especially, is an art director’s medium because it is seen through the mind’s eye of the director, and I think it is crucial that the director holds it together,” says Tisca.

“You are kind of leading people, encouraging them on board, almost charming them into loving and believing in your story. Its quite different from being an actor, which is just being yourself and here there is a large team, and you have to make sure that everyone is coming together to bring a film to life,” she adds.

“I have the deepest gratitude that I have had the opportunity to tell stories that I really like and that people also love the stories that I love. Writing, acting, directing, comes from my love for stories. I think it is a question of you wanting to tell stories,” says Tisca.

What was the trigger that prompted her to give filmmaking a serious thought?

“Necessity is the mother of invention. Nobody was making that kind of story and I wanted to make. So, I decided to make it and it did so well,” she said, adding: “People like stories and ultimately what we are, are stories. Stories about ourselves in our own head.”

On the acting front, Tisca will start shooting for a new series titled Fear in February. While she is tightlipped about details, she says: “My role will require a lot of physical effort from my side in terms of hardcore physical training and changes in terms of diet, because it requires me to have a lean look. So, that is the first series starting in February. It’s called Fear.”

Tisca made her debut in Bollywood with the 1993 film 15 August but her breakthrough role happened only with the 2007 release, Taare Zameen Par. She says she is satisfied with her acting career so far.

“Most certainly I have got my due and what is my due?. I have got work and I am continuously getting to work with the brightest minds in the business, whether it is an Aamir Khan or a Sudhir Mishra or an Akshay Kumar or Anil Kapoor and in their home productions,” she said.

“I have got the opportunity to work with lovely talents like Irrfan Khan and Nandita Das. I get to work with same people again and again and have made deep friendship. From the bad films of the nineties to come out and reinvent oneself in 2000s and go into the 21st century with a solid career, I am very fortunate and feel very thankful,” she adds.

Kabir Bedi’s Book Reveals New Things

Veteran actor Kabir Bedi says his upcoming autobiography is not a kiss and tell book, but one that will reveal a lot of things new to readers with raw emotional intensity. He adds that he plans to release the book in summer this year…Ahana Bhattacharya.

The actor of international repute chose the Covid-induced lockdown last year to devote time and pen the book narrating his journey, ups and downs, achievements and tragedies.

“I have been wanting to write a book for a number of years and got the time to think about it during lockdown. I figured out how I wanted to tell my story, which is very important. It took me four months to write the book and then I revised it for the next two months,” Bedi told IANS.

Throwing light on the contents of his book, the actor added: “It is the story of my life told through a number of stories. I think people will get a good sense of me as a person, my triumphs and tragedies, milestones, mistakes — everything after reading it.”

He continued: “It is a very honest book. I have friends, family and fans in various parts of the world. So, I feel a lot of people would be interested to know my story, what I’ve learnt from life and the many things that happened on the way. It is a very fulfilling book for me and should be out before summer.”

Autobiographies are expected to bare all. Is there anything that the author chooses not to mention in his book? Bedi paused for a while and replied: “This is not a kiss and tell book but I have talked with raw emotional intensity about the relationships that are known. It’s honest and vulnerable and there will be a lot of things that will be new to the readers. I will be able to talk far more in depth about the book once it is announced.”

Last year has been different, as the pandemic has changed lives as well as our perspective towards it. How did the year treat him? “I feel very sorry for those people who suffered in this pandemic. For me, it has been a brilliantly great year because I spent the time writing my book and fulfilling a long-held desire. In fact, I worked harder during the pandemic than I normally work. Even though acting stopped, I did a lot of writing as well as recording for documentaries, commercials etc. So it has been a very productive year for me in many ways,” the 75-year-old actor informed.

The year 2020 was special for the veteran actor also because it marked the Bollywood debut of his granddaughter Alaya F.

“I am delighted by Alaya’s success in the industry. I think she is the most talented girl of the new generation. I don’t give her any unneeded advice. She has a mind of her own and knows what she wants to do. She has done it all on her own merit,” he said.

On the acting front, Kabir Bedi says he is open to working in web series as long as the content is good or the role that he is offered is interesting, which will allow him to utilise his acting skills and abilities. The 70-plus actor revealed that he keeps getting offers for the web, but is waiting for the “right story”.

Sonu enjoys moments of real life hero

Actor Sonu Sood, who was lauded for his efforts to send migrants home safely during lockdown last year, dismisses allegations that he pulled off the entire operation using funds provided by a particular political party…writes Yashika Mathur.

“I could do all this because I was not associated with any political party. Otherwise I would have had to ask 100 questions before doing a job like this. Since it was my decision to connect with people and help them, I was able to reach out. Whatever I did, was not about caste or religion. I reached out to people across society. I have been connecting with people a lot over the past year,” Sonu tells IANS.

“I have been in this industry over the last 20 years and have done over 100 movies, but to reach out to every single person who loves me has not been possible. I think I have thoroughly enjoyed playing the real-life hero. This is not a film, but surely the almighty is the director,” he adds.

Questions were raised and theories floated over how he managed to send lakhs of people home on his own.

“I remember when I started this mission, Chandraprakash Dwivedi, director of my (forthcoming) film ‘Pritviraj’, told me people would want to bring me down, given the path I had chosen. The problem with the world is that people cannot see something right happening. When they see that, they question why this is happening, why is someone there to help others? But it fades off because there is no truth or spine to it. It wont stop me from doing what I am doing. It is a journey which I started with millions. There will be few who will not like it but I hope that one day they also become part of this journey,” he says.

The actor woke up to the news on Tuesday that some people in Telangana have started a free ambulance service in his name.

“The service they have started is so beautiful. This is an ambulance service that is free of cost in Telangana and it is spreading across to Andhra Pradesh. I will also be helping them now, since it is a facility a lot of people would need. They will also start a toll free number especially for this. When they told me this, I was speechless. Since, I am associated with ILAAJ India Initiative, I know how difficult it is for people to get medical service. I would like to it to be a pan-India service,” says Sonu.

No plans to enter politics: Actor Sonu Sood.

How does he feel when people hail him as a real life hero? “I miss my parents more, every single day when people say I am the national hero. I wish they were here to see this. They are my guiding angels. Lot of people and young kids are affected. I used to get pictures clicked as an actor. Lately, people tell me their children want to become like me and that makes me feel very happy,” he says.

A few others of the Bollywood fraternity have also reacted to the troll and defending the Bharat Ratna singer.

“In her hey day, which lasted a long time, Lata Mangeshkar had an unmistakably mellifluous voice. Listen to just Lag Ja Gale to know that. Maybe you refer to the late 80’s & 90’s when, with age, her singing got screechy. I guess, In India, fans dont let you stop when you should,” expressed screenwriter and film editor Apurva Asrani.

“Twitter is the best medium for misers who mock respected stalwarts just to gain followers. Worthless people who can’t ever reach that level but have opinions that no one cares for. Instead of commenting or questioning one should block them!! #Latamangeshkar #Respect,” shared actress Koena Mitra.

Mithila’s First Love Is Theatre

Popular cinema and OTT actor Mithila Palkar, best known for Netflix’s ‘Little Things’ and 2018 movie ‘Karwaan’, says that theatre will always be her first love. Mithila had her beginnings with Marathi theatre, and feels close to it still.

“Theatre will always be my first love. Marathi theatre is something that I knew in my heart that I wanted to start with. Specifically Marathi because it is the language that I am most comfortable speaking in, and stage because that’s where I had the epiphany that I wanted to be an actor. Every time I am on stage, even today, I think every other joy is just unparalleled. This feeling is something inexplicable for me and theatre will always be very close to my heart. I guess that feeling of belonging keeps me close to theatre,” Mithila told IANSlife in an interview.

Her last play, ‘Dekh Behen’, was produced by Akvarious Productions, directed by Shikha Talsania and Prerna Chawla and written by Tahira Nath and Dilshad Edibam Khurana. The actor is elated that the shows of the play are still running. “The shows of this play are ongoing and the minute theatres open up, I am pretty sure we all will be rushing back to theatre to perform on it. So, I am still in touch with theatre very much, so thanks to ‘Dekh Behen’.”

How different is acting on the stage? Does it refine her as an actor?

“It definitely is very different. I always said that as an actor, acting on stage and acting on camera are two different things. What you emote as a theatre actor, it is very loud and out there and it demands a direct reflection from the audience whereas acting in front of a camera it’s very to yourself and contained. It is way more challenging to be on stage because it is not the same to be acting on camera and it does not necessarily make you a better actor on camera if you are a better actor on stage and vice versa.

“This is because they are both different techniques and both these techniques need to be mastered on their own. So, yes definitely theatre does refine you as an actor and as I have always said — theatre is a very raw medium of entertainment,” she said.

B’wood Into Superhero Flicks

When the going gets tough, Bollywood thinks big. Reeling under the twin effect of the pandemic and OTT influx, which have dented business, Bollywood is pulling all stops with mega-budget announcements, to woo fans back to the halls. Among emerging trends is the superhero movie…writes Natalia Ningthoujam.

The genre is not exactly new — Hrithik Roshan did star in the “Krrish” films, after all. But at no point in time has the Hindi film industry got into making so many superhero flicks at the same time as now. Trade analysts see it as a good trend, especially in these times when theatres are trying to pull the audience back amid the pandemic.

Hollywood, of course, is a big influence, as everything else about Bollywood. Global blockbusters as “The Dark Knight” series”, the “Avengers” films, “Black Panther”, “Wonder Woman”, “Captain America: Civil War”, and “Justice League” among others set the cash registers ringing in India, too. With more films like “Black Widow”, “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” and the third part of “Spider-Man” lined up for release, the genre is alive and kicking in Hollywood. Bollywood had to take cue.

Actor Vicky Kaushal recently got fans excited when he officially announced a new superhero film with his “Uri: The Surgical Strike” director Aditya Dhar, and also shared posters of the film, titled “The Immortal Ashwatthama”.

“Overwhelmed and ecstatic! On the 2nd anniversary of ‘URI-The Surgical Strike’, the team gives you a glimpse into the world of #TheImmortalAshwatthama Cannot wait to get onto this journey with the dream team of @adityadharfilms #RonnieScrewvala @rsvpmovies @soniyeah22,” Vicky posted on Instagram along with the posters that have a touch of mythology and modernity.

The director, on the other hand, posted on Instagram: “Raising the bar higher for the superhero genre not only in India but across the world, this film is a high-concept visual spectacle in the making. From the team that brought to you URI The Surgical Strike, presenting @vickykaushal09 in and as #TheImmortalAshwatthama.”

This isn’t the only Bollywood superhero film in the making right now.

Filmmaker Ali Abbas Zafar, who has helmed blockbusters like “Sultan” and “Tiger Zinda Hai”, has planned a superhero universe. While one of his films will star Katrina Kaif, his “Mr. India” will be set in a relevant and contemporary superhero world.

In July 2020, filmmaker Sanjay Gupta tweeted that he had started scripting “Rakshak”, his film about a vigilante superhero, while in December last year, there were unconfirmed reports that Kartik Aaryan would star in the film adaptation of the comicbook character Phantom.

Among films already on floor is Ayan Mukerji’s mega-budget “Brahmastra”, which will reportedly have actor Ranbir Kapoor playing a man with special powers. The film also boasts of Amitabh Bachchan, Alia Bhatt, Nagarjuna and Mouni Roy in the cast.

Hrithik masks up again, too, in “Krrish 4”. The hit franchise began in 2003 with “Koi… Mil Gaya”, followed by “Krrish” (2006) and “Krrish 3” (2013). According to director Rakesh Roshan, the film was set for a Christmas 2020 release.

“Today is perhaps the best day to make the release day of Krrish 4 official. Christmas 2020 it is. A gift for all of you on Hrithiks birthday,” Rakesh Roshan had tweeted in 2018.

However, following the Covid pandemic, the film is yet to hit the screens anytime soon.

According to trade expert Rajesh Thadani, huge revenue comes from Hollywood superhero films. “I think they (Bollywood filmmakers) are taking to that. These kind of films cater to everyone, not just kids. They can be turned into franchises. There’s a thrill element involved in such films. Basically, people need a change from routine, and this is a good change,” he told IANS.

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh agrees with him. “It’s a great trend. We should make all kinds of films. When we talk of movies in today’s time, we often complain that Hindi films don’t have originality. They repeat themselves. This (superhero genre) is something that has not been exploited to the hilt. I think it’s a step in the right direction,” he told IANS.

There have been successful and failed attempts made by Indian filmmakers in the genre in the past.

For instance, the audience didn’t accept Tiger Shroff as hero with superpowers in “A Flying Jatt” (2016). Even the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer “Ra.One” (2011) failed to live up to expectations. The “Krrish” franchise, on the other hand, still has a strong fan following. Akshay Kumar also tried his hand at the genre in the Tamil film “2.0”. With Rajinikanth as the protagonist, Akshay played the antagonist Pakshi Rajan.

“Stars are important, but so is the content. You need to be original and give a desi tadka to such films,” said Adarsh, who feels adding mythology element to such films “would be great”.

But he feels that it won’t be easy to woo the Indian audience with such films as they already have a good exposure of Hollywood hits.

“When you make a superhero film, you need to keep in mind that you will be compared with western counterparts because so many superhero films have released in India, and people have loved them. So obviously you have to be at par or maybe in that league to woo the Indian audience,” he said.

Viewers often point out the technology used in Hindi films, especially to make such films, is never up to the mark. But Thadani feels that is not something to worry about now as a lot of experts from abroad work on the special effects. Also, he feels that technology-wise, Indian cinema has improved.
