Dimple says BJP failed to fulfil manifesto promises

The reaction comes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier mounted a strong attack on Congress…reports Asian Lite News

Samajwadi Party MP and candidate from Mainpuri Lok Sabha constituency, Dimple Yadav reacted to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s remark on the Congress’ manifesto and in a veiled attack towards the centre said that such statements are being made because the ruling party has itself “failed” to fulfil the promises in their manifesto during 10 years of tenure.

“All the statements coming from senior leaders are not surprising. Whenever elections come, there is a similar change in language. Such things do not sound good to those who talk about Sanatana Dharma because if they know the nature of Sanatana Dharma, they will understand that we are all one, no one is different,” Yadav told ANI.

“This kind of thing is being raised continuously in the elections, I understand because these people have failed completely in their manifesto in their 10 years of tenure during which they announced 2 crore jobs, raising farmers’ income, building smart cities and reducing inflation,” she said.

“Today, if you look at the prices of the cylinder, petrol, diesel, and fertilizers used by farmers, you will understand that the government has failed somewhere and that is why they are making such statements,” added Yadav.

The reaction comes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier mounted a strong attack on Congress and said that the opposition party is cut off from the hopes and aspirations of today’s India and its manifesto reflects the thinking that the Muslim League had during the freedom movement.

In his first reaction to the Congress manifesto, PM Modi said it “completely bears the imprint of the Muslim League” and the remaining part is dominated by the Leftists.

Dimple Yadav is contesting from the Mainpuri seat, and earlier her daughter Aditi Yadav, campaigned for the party in Mainpuri and urged the people to vote for the party.

Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah who was addressing a public rally in Mainpuri on Monday accused the Samajwadi Party of ‘family-based politics and questioned why SP couldn’t find any other ‘Yadav’ candidate outside their family.

“I want to ask Akhilesh Yadav, don’t you find ‘Yadavs’ outside your family? They don’t belong to anyone. The time has come to finish these family-run parties and make lotus bloom in Mainpuri under PM Modi’s leadership,” he said.

Earlier in the day, Shah addressed a public meeting in UP’s Etah. While taking a jibe at Akhilesh Yadav, Shah said if things were under the SP chief’s control, he would have fielded his family members on all the seats in Uttar Pradesh.

UP which sends the maximum 80 MPs to the Lok Sabha, is undergoing polling across all seven phases. The counting of all seven phases of voting will be held on June 4.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections in Uttar Pradesh, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged as the winner by securing the majority of seats available.

Of 80 seats, the BJP won 62, followed by the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) with 10 seats, the Samajwadi Party (SP) with 5 seats, and the Apna Dal with 2 seats. (ANI)

SP downplays Yadav image, courts non-Yadavs

The SP has chosen candidates belonging to OBC caste groups like Kurmi, Nishad, Rajbhar, Bind and Kushwaha on prominent seats….reports Asian Lite News

The Samajwadi Party (SP) is apparently making a conscious effort to downplay its pro-Yadav image and has focused on non-Yadav OBCs in candidate selection in eastern Uttar Pradesh.

The SP has chosen candidates belonging to OBC caste groups like Kurmi, Nishad, Rajbhar, Bind and Kushwaha on prominent seats.

The idea is obviously to bring the other backward castes closer to Yadavs and form a consolidated vote base.

The Samajwadi Party, for instance, has fielded Pappu Nishad from Sant Kabir Nagar. He is challenging BJP candidate Parveen Nishad, son of Nishad Party President Sanjay Nishad in this seat.

In Basti, SP has chosen veteran Ram Prasad Chaudhary, a Kurmi, to challenge BJP sitting MP Harish Dwivedi. Dwivedi had defeated Chaudhary in the 2019 elections. The BSP, this time has nominated Daya Shankar Mishra as its candidate.

In Jaunpur, former BSP minister Babu Singh Kushwaha is the SP candidate. He is pitted against Kripa Shankar Singh of the BJP. Singh is the former minister of the Maharashtra government. The BSP has fielded Sreekala Reddy Singh, wife of mafia don and former MP Dhananjay Singh.

In Salempur, the Samajwadi Party has fielded Rama Shankar Rajbhar, who wields influence among his Rajbhar community, while the BJP has repeated its sitting MP Ravindra Kushwaha.

In Mirzapur, the Samajwadi candidate is Rajendra Bind who also belongs to the riverine community. The Mirzapur seat is held by BJP ally — Apna Dal (S) — and its leader Anupriya Patel will be seeking her third term from here.

In Maharajganj, the Samajwadi Party candidate is Narendra Chaudhary who belongs to the Kurmi community.

The SP has fielded Pintu Sainthwar, another OBC, from Kushinagar while it has named Lalji Varma, a Kurmi leader, from Ambedkar Nagar. The SP has also named a Kurmi candidate from Pratapgarh — S P Singh Patel.

“Yes, we have made a conscious effort this time to give greater representation to non-Yadav OBCs and this is a part of our PDA (Pichhda, Dalit, Alpasankhyak) formula,” said a party spokesman.

The SP, this time, has only five Yadavs in its list — Akhilesh Yadav from Kannauj, Dharmendra Yadav, from Azamgarh, Dimple Yadav from Mainpuri, Akshay Yadav from Firozabad and Aditya Yadav from Budaun. It is another matter that all of them belong to the same family.

Kharge to decide Amethi, Raebareli candidates

Rahul Gandhi contested the Lok Sabha elections from Kerala’s Wayanad, where polling took place on Friday in the second phase of the polls. He had said earlier that he will follow “whatever order” he gets from his party…reports Asian Lite News

Amid speculation over whether Gandhi family members would contest the Lok Sabha polls from Uttar Pradesh and Raebareli, the Congress on Monday said its Central Election Committee (CEC) has authorised party chief Mallikarjun Kharge to decide the candidates for the two constituencies.

The Uttar Pradesh Congress has urged the top party leadership to field Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra from the two seats.

Asked when the candidates for the two seats would be announced and whether Gandhi family members would be fielded from there, Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate said, “The president has been authorised to decide the candidates. Elections are not run in a hidden manner, they are run with all paraphernalia before everyone. You will get to know when the candidates are announced.”

“In our party, such decisions are not taken by two people in (behind) closed doors, the CEC has put forward its views and with its and the president’s nod, the candidates will be decided,” she said.

Rahul Gandhi contested the Lok Sabha elections from Kerala’s Wayanad, where polling took place on Friday in the second phase of the polls. He had said earlier that he will follow “whatever order” he gets from his party.

Speculation has been rife that Rahul Gandhi might contest the Lok Sabha polls from Amethi, a seat he represented for three straight terms earlier, and Priyanka Gandhi from Raebareli, a seat that was previously held by her mother Sonia Gandhi.

Both seats are considered bastions of the Gandhi family and the local units of the Congress have demanded that the two scions of the family contest from there. Mr Gandhi won the Amethi seat in three consecutive Lok Sabha elections from 2004. BJP leader Smriti Irani wrested the seat in 2019.

Gandhi, who contested from both Amethi and Wayanad in 2019, had won the elections from Wayanad. Polling in Amethi and Raebareli will be held on May 20, in the fifth phase of the Lok Sabha polls.

The Congress has forged an alliance with the Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh and is contesting 17 Lok Sabha seats in the state.  The counting of votes for all seven phases of the Lok Sabha polls will be taken up on June 4.

Smriti Irani files nomination

Union Minister for Women and Child Development Smriti Irani filed her nomination papers for Amethi Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh on Monday and expressed confidence that people will bless the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the elections.

Smriti Irani, who is re-contesting from Amethi, was accompanied by Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav as she filed her nomination papers.

“For the service of Amethi, I have filed my nomination today. In the last 5 years in Amethi, 1,14,000 houses have been built under PM Awas Yojana, 1.5 lakh families received electricity connections and over 4 lakh farmers received PM-Kisan Samman Nidhi…I am hopeful that people will bless PM Modi, BJP,” she told reporters after filing her nomination papers.

Amethi will vote in the fifth phase of the Lok Sabha elections on May 20. Smriti Irani held a roadshow before filing her nomination papers. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister was also present.

People showered flower petals as the roadshow made its way through Amethi roads. Earlier, Smriti Irani held puja at her residence. A day before filing her nomination papers, Irani rode a scooter to reach out to people in different localities of Amethi.

BJP’s Gujarat contender in Gujarat tops Rs 147 cr wealth

The revelation comes from the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), an impartial organization dedicated to fostering electoral and political transparency….reports Asian Lite News

In the electoral landscape of Gujarat, the wealth spectrum among candidates paints a stark contrast. Poonam Maadam, the Bharatiya Janata Party’s contender for the Jamnagar Lok Sabha seat, emerges as the wealthiest, boasting assets totaling a staggering ₹147 crore.

Conversely, Bahujan Samaj Party’s Rekha Chaudhari, vying for the Bardoli (Scheduled Tribe) constituency, stands at the other end of the financial spectrum, with declared assets amounting to a meager ₹2,000.

This revelation comes from the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), an impartial organization dedicated to fostering electoral and political transparency. Their data indicates that out of the 266 candidates competing across 26 Lok Sabha seats in Gujarat, 68 are ‘crorepatis,’ constituting 26 percent of the total candidates.

Mukesh Dalal, a BJP candidate securing victory unopposed from Surat, commands assets exceeding ₹17 crore, according to the ADR. Notably, Poonam Maadam, eyeing re-election, has witnessed a substantial surge in her assets from ₹42.7 crore in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections to ₹147 crore in 2024. This growth encompasses movable assets worth ₹60 crore and immovable properties valued at ₹87 crore, spanning her personal holdings, those of her spouse, and assets under the Hindu Undivided Family (HUF) umbrella.

Within the realm of Union ministers contesting from Gujarat, Parshottam Rupala and Mansukh Mandaviya stand out. Rupala declares assets surpassing ₹17 crore, while Mandaviya’s assets exceed ₹7 crore. Furthermore, Gujarat BJP president CR Paatil, contesting re-election from Navsari, reveals assets exceeding ₹39 crore.

Among Congress contenders, Bharat Makwana from Ahmedabad (West), representing the Scheduled Castes, emerges as the wealthiest with assets exceeding ₹25 crore. However, BJP maintains dominance in ‘crorepati’ representation, fielding 24 such candidates compared to Congress’ 21, with the Bahujan Samaj Party contributing four.

ADR’s breakdown of candidate demographics reveals a varied profile. Nineteen out of the 266 candidates are women, while educational backgrounds span from doctorates to illiteracy. Notably, five candidates hold doctorates, seven are illiterate, and educational qualifications range from diploma holders to postgraduates.

In addition to financial disparities, the electoral arena showcases a diverse age distribution, with candidates spanning from 25 to over 70 years old.

Rahul bats for Dalit rights in Gujarat rally

The Congress leader criticised the government’s policies like the Agnipath Scheme and increased privatisation, which he said aimed at dismantling the reservation system…reports Asian Lite News

Insisting that the ongoing Lok Sabha election is a critical battle between two contrasting ideologies, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) for posing a “direct threat” to India’s democracy and constitution.

“This is a fight between two thought processes. On one side, the BJP and RSS want to finish our constitution while on the other, we in the Congress and the INDIA bloc are safeguarding it,” said Gandhi while addressing a rally in Patan Lok Sabha constituency in Gujarat.

He also criticised the government’s policies like the Agnipath Scheme and increased privatisation, which he said aimed at dismantling the reservation system.

“You will not find an Adivasi or a Dalit among the top anchors and editors in the country. Nor will you see unemployed youth or farmers on television, which instead showcases the opulent weddings of the wealthy and Bollywood actors,” said Gandhi.

Highlighting the current unemployment crisis, he emphasised that such issues are grossly underreported, with the voices of 90 per cent of Indians comprising farmers, labourers and small business owners rarely heard in the media.

The Congress leader also stressed the importance of a caste census for ensuring justice and proper representation for Dalits and Adivasis, questioning their absence from significant events like the Ram Mandir and Parliament inaugurations.

Patan seat was initially dominated by the Congress and later challenged by other parties like the Swatantra Party and Lok Dal.

A pivotal moment came in 1989 when the seat was reserved for the Scheduled Caste category, leading to a win for the Janata Dal. This marked a shift in the nature of political representation in Patan. The BJP won the seat in 1991 with Mahesh Kanodia setting the stage for ongoing contests between the BJP and Congress.

Congress drawing flak for poor planning

As campaigning for the third phase of Lok Sabha elections gathers pace, a stark contrast has been observed by experts in the poll strategies of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress, especially when it comes to their star campaigners addressing rallies all over the country.

While the BJP, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in particular, has focused on holding election rallies in areas that go to voting next as per the seven-phase schedule, the Congress and its top leaders like Rahul Gandhi are drawing flak for being ‘careless’ with their planning.

PM Modi, having already done over 70 rallies and roadshows till now, on Sunday addressed four back-to-back rallies in Karnataka’s Belagavi, Uttara Kannada, Davanagere, and Ballari, which will go to the polls in the third phase on May 7.

On Monday, he was in Karnataka’s Bagalkote before addressing public meetings in Maharashtra’s Solapur, Satara, and Pune.

On the other hand, former Congress President Rahul Gandhi addressed the public in Daman and Diu and Odisha’s Kendrapara on Sunday.

On Monday, he was in Gujarat’s Patan and Chhattisgarh’s Bilaspur for campaigning.

Analysts are somewhat baffled with the Congress’ choice of venues for holding Rahul Gandhi’s rallies as Kendrapara goes to the polls in the seventh and last phase on June 1. Not just that, Congress’ last win in the constituency came way back in 1952.

Calling it a case of poor planning, the experts reckon it as one of the many reasons why the party has failed to maximise gains in the ongoing elections.

Meanwhile, even while following a gruelling schedule, addressing one rally after the other from one corner of the country to another, PM Modi is thanking the BJP supporters for turning up in large numbers for his rallies across the nation.

“Incredible energy at the public meeting in Pune! Gratitude to everyone for joining the rally in huge numbers,” the Prime Minister said while addressing a rally in Pune on Monday.

Coalition govt will be formed at Centre, says KCR

Alleging that the Congress came to power by uttering lies, KCR asked what happened to the promises made by the party to give one tola gold for the marriage of a poor girl under the Kalyana Lakshmi scheme…reports Asian Lite News

Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) President K. Chandrasekhar Rao on Monday said that he believes that a coalition government will be formed at the Centre as the BJP will not even get 200 seats in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.

Addressing a road show here while campaigning for BRS candidate Nama Nageswar Rao for Khammam Lok Sabha constituency, KCR, as Rao is popularly known, exuded confidence that his BRS will win 12 out of 17 Lok Sabha seats in Telangana.

He also predicted that Nageswar Rao would become a minister at the Centre.

The former Chief Minister vowed to fight to safeguard the interests of Telangana till the end and claimed that the BRS government took care of every section of people.

Alleging that the Congress came to power by uttering lies, KCR asked what happened to the promises made by the party to give one tola gold for the marriage of a poor girl under the Kalyana Lakshmi scheme.

He asked women if they were getting Rs 2,500 per month promised by the Congress party during Assembly elections.

The BRS chief said he was being targeted for demanding the Congress government fulfil its promises. “I achieved Telangana state. Will you jail me?” he asked and made it clear that he was not scared of such threats.

KCR said some people are stating that after the Lok Sabha elections, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy will join the BJP and has not even once denied the statements of BJP leaders.

The former Chief Minister said BRS leader Harish Rao threw a challenge at Revanth Reddy that they both will hand over their resignations to intellectuals and if the government fails to waive farm loans by August 15, the intellectuals will forward the Chief Minister’s resignation to the Governor and if the farm loans are waived as promised by Revanth Reddy, Harish Rao’s resignation as MLA will be forwarded to the Speaker.

While Harish Rao reached Telangana Martyrs’ Memorial with his resignation, the Chief Minister did not turn up, he said.

‘PM taking inspiration from Goebbels’

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh says PM is inspired by Nazi minister Goebbels while speaking about the party’s Nyay Patra for the LS elections…reports Asian Lite News

The Congress on Monday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of taking inspiration from Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels while speaking about the party’s Nyay Patra for the Lok Sabha elections.

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said, “For his MA in Entire Political Science, Mr. Narendra Modi must definitely have read Joseph Goebbels on the value of propaganda and taken inspiration from him.”

He noted that Goebbels had stated that, “If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it.”

Ramesh said he also wrote in 1941 that “The English follow the principle that when one lies, one should lie big and stick to it.” Goebbels was the propaganda minister of German ruler Adolf Hitler.

“In his latest interview to a TV channel, which is being headlined, the outgoing PM has yet again blatantly, brazenly and shamelessly lied about the Congress’s Nyay Patra. It once again proves that Mr.Modi’s motto has always been ‘Asatyameva Jayate.’ Truth is slaughtered every time he speaks,” the Congress leader alleged.

‘BJP’s manifesto has vanished without a trace’

Meanwhile, Congress leader P Chidambaram said that the manifesto of the BJP for the Lok Sabha polls has vanished without a trace after it was announced. On the other hand, Congress manifesto recieved popularity because of its welfare promises.

In a post on X, P Chidambaram said, “Congress’ manifesto is based on three driving principles: work, wealth and welfare. There is nothing in the BJP’s manifesto that is comparable to the Congress’ Manifesto. That is why PM Modi and other BJP leaders do not speak about their manifesto. The BJP’s manifesto vanished without a trace. The Congress’ manifesto has left a deep impression on the minds of the people and has become a talking point among millions of people of the country.”

Chidambaram, who heads the Congress manifesto committee, said that his party’s poll document has an inclusive approach and that it only talks about the poor.

“Speaking at Solapur, Maharashtra, Prime Minister said that SC, ST, OBC and the poor have the first right on the country’s resources PM Manmohan Singh said the same thing in his speech to the National Development Council in November 2006 Dr Manmohan Singh had added minorities, women and children to that list why has PM Narendra Modi forgotten minorities, women and children? Are there not poor minorities, poor women and poor children?” he asked.

He further said that the correct formulation would be that the poor have the first claim on the nation’s resources.

“The Congress recognizes that despite development there is a significant number of poor people in the country. Hence, the ‘pivot to the poor’. Congress’ manifesto has the policies that will lift the poor, increase their incomes, and reduce the alarming inequalities in India,” Chidambaram said.

Chidambaram was the chairman of the Congress Manifesto Committee for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Earlier on April 29, Prime Minister Narendra Modi claimed that the Congress and the INDIA bloc are “spreading lies” on OBC representation, adding that the Congress never wanted Dalit, Adivasi and OBC leadership to lead the country.

Addressing a public gathering in Solapur, Maharashtra, PM Modi said that the Congress insulted Dalit leader Dr BR Ambedkar.

“Congress never wanted Dalit, Tribal and OBC leadership in the country. This is the same Congress that insulted Dalit leader Dr BR Ambedkar. Babasaheb Ambedkar got the Bharat Ratna when a BJP-backed government was in power at the Centre,” PM said.

“It has always been the endeavour of the BJP to ensure maximum representation for SC, ST, and OBCs. In 2014, when you gave us a huge majority, the NDA made a Dalit’s son (Ram Nath Kovind), the President (Droupadi Murmu) of the country,” he added.

Dimple Yadav hits out at BJP

(ANI)

EC banned AAP’s campaign song, alleges Atishiq

Atishi pointed out that there is no name of BJP anywhere in AAP’s campaign song but ECI says that if you talk about ‘dictatorship’ then this is the criticism of the ruling party…reports Asian Lite News

Aam Aadmi Party leader Atishi on Sunday alleged that the Election Commission has banned the party’s campaign song, ‘Jail ka jawab vote se’ stating that it showed the ruling party and agencies in a very poor light

Addressing a press conference in the national capital today, Atishi said, “It happens in a dictatorial government that the opposition is put in jail and is also prevented from campaigning. Today Election Commission of India has banned AAP’s campaign song. This would have happened for the first time in the history of India that the Election Commission would have banned the campaign song of any party. This is the same Election Commission which does not see when BJP violates the model code of conduct every day.”

“When BJP uses ED and CBI to put opposition leaders in jail during the MCC, the poll body has no objection to that. But when the Aam Aadmi Party writes that thing in the song, then there is a lot of objection to it. The ECI said that the song ‘Jail ka Jawab Vote Se’ shows the ruling party and agencies in a very poor light,” Atishi added further.

The Delhi Minister also pointed out that there is no name of BJP anywhere in AAP’s campaign song but ECI says that if you talk about ‘dictatorship’ then this is the criticism of the ruling party.

“That means the Election Commission itself believes that BJP is running a dictatorship in this country. I would like to remind the ECI that you are the successor of TN Seshan, who is remembered after so many years because he took free and fair elections in India to a new height. I want to say that after a few years, the elections of 2024 should not be remembered as when India’s democracy ended, this was the election in which ECI was not neutral. I want to appeal to the Election Commission to have a look to the BJP, who is violating the Model Code of Conduct daily,” Atishi said.

Sunita’s meeting with Kejriwal cancelled?

The Tihar Jail authorities said that the meeting with Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has been allotted as per the sequence of seeking the permission.

Sunita Kejriwal’s meeting with her husband and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is likely to be next week, the jail sources said on Sunday.

According to the jail authorities, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders Atishi and Bhagwant Mann were scheduled to meet with the party supremo on April 29 and 30 accordingly. The AAP leaders had sought permission beforehand.

The jail authorities further said that the permission to visit is given in the same order in which it is sought and Sunita Kejriwal has not sought permission earlier.

According to the jail rules, the visits are allowed only twice a week and the upcoming week is booked for two days.

Kejriwal was arrested by the ED on March 21 in connection with a money laundering probe relating to alleged irregularities in the now-cancelled Delhi excise policy 2021-22. (ANI)

AAP holds ‘Walk for Kejriwal’ walkathon

Aam Aadmi Party on Sunday held a walkathon named ‘Walk for Kejriwal’ in support of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal who is in jail in connection with the Delhi Excise Policy case.

The campaign-cum walkathon was organised in Delhi’s CR Park.

AAP supporters were seen carrying flags with Kejriwal’s photo with the ‘Jail ka jawab vote se’ slogan.

Delhi minister and AAP leader Atishi told ANI, “The people of Delhi have come here to support Arvind Kejriwal. BJP thought if they put Arvind Kejriwal in jail, AAP would not be able to conduct the election campaigns. But, the people of Delhi are campaigning for Arvind Kejriwal.

Party leader Saurabh Bharadwaj, who also took part, said that PM Narendra Modi is very nervous.

“We are running a campaign in Delhi called ‘Jail ka jawaab vote se’ against the arrest of Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal. Our youth wing our Lok Sabha candidates from South Delhi and New Delhi have organised a walkathon. PM Narendra Modi is very nervous. The way he has changed his stance in his election rallies makes it clear that even he believes that the opposition is coming to power,” he said.

Taking a dig at the BJP, he said, “We have installed a washing machine here, and if you put any corrupt politician in this machine, he comes out clean.”

The Delhi Chief Minister has been lodged in Tihar Jail since April 1, following his arrest in the Delhi excise policy case by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on March 21.

Earlier on April 25, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court opposing Kejriwal’s plea against his arrest and said that he did not cooperate with the central agency despite multiple summons issued to him.

The ED said that the agency has been able to recover key evidence that directly reveals the role of Kejriwal in processes and activities relating to the proceeds of crime.

Kejriwal had approached the top court challenging his arrest by ED and his subsequent remand in the excise policy case. The apex court had earlier asked the Central Agency to file its response to Kejriwal’s plea. (ANI)

Cong urges EC to probe mismanagement of Kerala polls

Satheesan highlighted instances where voters endured extensive waits, some lasting up to four-and-a-half hours, under scorching conditions…reports Asian Lite News

The Congress party in Kerala has levelled serious allegations of mismanagement during the Lok Sabha elections held on April 26, prompting a call for a thorough investigation by the Election Commission of India (ECI).

V D Satheesan, Leader of the Opposition in the Kerala Assembly, asserted in a letter to the ECI that the electoral process in Kerala suffered from significant mismanagement, leading to substantial delays across many polling booths.

Satheesan highlighted instances where voters endured extensive waits, some lasting up to four-and-a-half hours, under scorching conditions. He emphasised instances of voters being unable to cast their ballots despite arriving before the 6 PM deadline, attributing these issues to what he termed as “grave negligence” on the part of officials.

Satheesan further criticized the alleged lacklustre attitude of officials, attributing it to a drop in voter turnout. He cited instances where faulty Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) were not promptly addressed, indicating systemic flaws in the election arrangements.

Despite these claims, Chief Electoral Officer Sanjay Kaul asserted the overall satisfaction with the electoral process, highlighting the timely completion of voting in the majority of polling booths. However, the contrasting narratives underscore the need for a comprehensive inquiry into the alleged mismanagement, reflecting the contentious nature of the electoral process in Kerala.

Yechury writes to EC over Anurag Thakur’s speech

The CPI (M) General Secretary said people will lose all faith in the Election Commission’s ability to conduct free and fair elections if no action is taken against the Union Minister….reports Asian Lite News

CPI (M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury wrote a letter to the Election Commission on Sunday against Union Minister and BJP leader Anurag Thakur for inciting hatred against a community.

Talking to X, Yechury urged the Election Commission to take action against Anurag Thakur, Otherwise, he says people will lose all faith in the Election Commission’s ability to conduct free and fair elections.

“Before people lose all faith in this Election Commission’s ability to conduct a ‘free and fair’ poll the ECI must act. Earlier, ECI had disenfranchised those who gave such incendiary communal speeches,” he said.

“Following the footsteps of his leader, Union Minister for Information & Broadcasting, Member of Parliament and star campaigner of the BJP, Anurag Thakur, is now repeating the same lies that Narendra Modi had made at a meeting in Rajasthan on April 21,” Yechury said in his letter to the ECI.

“In the link give below, Thakur has, with total disregard to the Representation of People Act and throwing provisions of the Model Code of Conduct to the winds, resorted to evoke communal passions and vitiate the poll atmosphere. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ypk87jGkBIY,” he said.

Yechury said that “More and more leaders of the BJP are now taking resort to inciting hatred against the Muslim community, using anti-Muslim tropes in their bid to create a false impression that their lives and wealth are threatened.”

“It is regrettable that the ECI has refused to take suo moto cognisance of such violations, despite them being prominently reported by the media. It is only after a flurry of complaints, that the ECI, found it prudent to send a notice to the BJP President. Even here, the ECI has instead of saying that it is acting on its own, has relied on the complaints received from political parties and civil society groups/individuals. Moreover, it has, for reasons best known to it, refrained from sending notice to the Narendra Modi who has been accused by the complainants,” he said.

“We urge the Election Commission of India to immediately issue notices to both Anurag Thakur as also the BJP President for the vituperative speech that Thakur made, while speaking at a public meeting. Also action should be taken without delay to see that such violations are strictly dealt with as per the provisions of the Representation of People Act. We need not reiterate that unless it immediately acts firmly and decisively, people’s faith in the Election Commission as also the entire process will stand undermined,” Yechury said. (ANI)
