Punjab needs NDA govt for security, economic revival: Captain

Addressing a function organized by the District Bar Association here, two-time Chief Minister Capt Amarinder said India faced grave security challenges from the ‘China-Pakistan-Taliban’ nexus….reports Asian Lite News

Punjab Lok Congress President Capt Amarinder Singh on Wednesday said the state needed the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government for security as well as economic revival.

He also criticized the Congress party’s decision to nominate Charanjit Singh Channi as the Chief Ministerial candidate despite serious allegations of corruption after seizure of Rs 10 crore from the possession of his nephew.

Addressing a function organized by the District Bar Association here, two-time Chief Minister Capt Amarinder said India faced grave security challenges from the ‘China-Pakistan-Taliban’ nexus.

“The challenge will be greater for Punjab for being at the forefront with a 600-km long border,” he said, while adding, “We need a government that will take the security challenge seriously and work in close coordination with the Central government.”

He gave details of the highly sophisticated drones being used by Pakistan to smuggle weapons, drugs and counterfeit currency to this side of the border. He criticized Chief Minister Channi for “senseless” opposition to the extension of the operational jurisdiction of the Border Security Force (BSF), which was the need of the hour.

Referring to the economic situation prevailing in the state, Amarinder Singh said, while the GDP of Punjab was Rs 5.25 lakh crore, 70 per cent of it was borrowed. He said it is a humongous task to come out of this debt trap, which cannot be possible without cooperation and support from the Central government.

The former Chief Minister said Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government at the Centre was going to be there, at least, for another seven years. “We must have a government in Punjab that will work with him as that is the only way out,” he added.

Capt Amarinder’s fledgling Punjab Lok Congress (PLC) is contesting the polls in alliance with the BJP and SAD (Sanyukt), an Akali Dal rebel.

He is contesting from his bastion Patiala (Urban), the seat that he has won for four consecutive terms since 2002 when he first contested.

In 2017, Capt Amarinder, 80, polled 72,217 votes against nearest rival Balbir Singh of the Aam Aadmi Party, who got just 19,852. Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) candidate and former Army chief Gen J.J. Singh (retd) got just 11,613 votes. Gen Singh is now with the BJP.

Punjab will go to the polls for the 117 Assembly seats on February 20.

Congress picks Channi as CM face in Punjab

Getting emotional on the announcement of his name, Channi said that he has always been honest, never took a penny from anyone, and will continue to work honestly…reports Asian Lite News

Just two weeks ahead of Assembly polls in the Congress-ruled Punjab, party leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday ended months of suspense by announcing incumbent Charanjit Singh Channi as the party’s Chief Ministerial face for the polls.

Accepting the decision, state party chief Navjot Singh Sidhu, who was in the race, hugged Channi on the stage as Gandhi announced his name after over 45 minutes of his speech, televised across the 117 Assembly seats.

Political observers believe the decision of the Congress to go to the polls in the state, which is witnessing a five-cornered contest, under the leadership of three-time legislator Channi, the state’s first Dalit Chief Minister, is to woo the Dalit Sikh votes that constitutes 32 per cent Scheduled Caste population in the state, the country’s largest.

“The people of Punjab have said, not me, the thought is theirs, not mine, that they want a person from a poor household as the CM. We want someone who understands poverty, hunger, and fears of the poor. Punjab’s CM candidate is Charanjit Singh Channi Ji,” said Gandhi during his address at the ‘Aawaz Punjab Di’ virtual rally.

He praised Channi for his humble background.

Lashing out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Gandhi said “he is not the PM but a king. Have you seen him helping anyone on the roadside”.

Getting emotional on the announcement of his name, Channi said that he has always been honest, never took a penny from anyone, and will continue to work honestly.

“This is a big battle which I can’t fight alone and I don’t have the money, courage to fight it,” he said, adding, “The people of Punjab will fight this battle.”

Channi became the CM after the unceremonious exit of Amarinder Singh over allegations of being hand-in-glove with the Akalis for not fulfilling the 2017 prominent poll promises — acting with an iron fist against the drug mafia and justice for the sacrilege of 2015 that led to protests and the deaths of two persons in the subsequent police firing.

The Congress announcement of the CM’s face came after the AAP declared comedian-turned-politician Bhagwant Mann as its Chief Ministerial candidate on January 18.

Before the formal announcement by Gandhi, Sidhu said, “I have accepted Rahul Gandhi’s decision…If I am given decision-making power, I will finish the mafia, improve people’s lives. If not given power, I will walk with a smile with whomever you make the CM.”

Responding to the Congress announcement, AAP Punjab co-incharge Raghav Chadha tweeted, “It is indeed sad that out of 3 crore Punjabis, the Congress party chose a person who is accused of illegal sand mining and transfer posting scam as their CM candidate.”

Political observers said that it was a tough task for the party high command to choose Channi, a Dalit Sikh, over Sidhu, a Jat Sikh, in a state with a population caste mix of roughly 32 per cent Dalits, 30 per cent Jat Sikhs and 40 per cent the rest.

“Most of the cabinet ministers and top leaders stood behind Channi owing to his soft approach, easy accessibility and the most important, being the biggest Dalit face. If the high command projected Sidhu as the chief minister’s face, it could upset the party’s Dalit vote bank,” a senior Congress leader said, requesting anonymity.

“After building an image of transferring power from the elite (Capt Amarinder Singh) to the poor, the party can’t ignore Channi’s claim at this stage,” the Congress leader added.

In a bid to woo Dalit voters, Channi last month spent a night at Dera Sachkhand Ballan, a prominent Ravidassia community that has much influence in the Doaba region comprising Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr and Kapurthala districts.

In his brief helm of 111 days, Channi built an image of the common man’s Chief Minister by extensively touring the state, occasionally performing ‘bhangra’ on the beats of a ‘dhol’ at public functions, favouring tea at roadside eateries while narrating couplets to the masses, besides accepting ‘siropas’ (religious robes) enroute by stopping his cavalcade.

The key opponents in the state — the AAP, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD)-Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) combine and the BJP in alliance with Amarinder Singh’s new party Punjab Lok Congress and the Samyukt Samaj Morcha, the fledging coalition of farm unions — are making an issue out of the Congress CM’s face.

Now the prominent faces for the parties are Channi (Congress), 58; Mann (AAP), 48; Sukhbir Singh Badal (SAD), 59; Amarinder Singh (BJP-led alliance), 80; and Balbir Singh Rajewal (Samyukt Samaj Morcha), 78.

11L people viewed Rahul’s virtual rally

A virtual rally in Punjab titled “Aawaz Punjab Di” addressed by former Congress President Rahul Gandhi from Ludhiana has broken all records after its live telecast was viewed by 11 lakh people on social media, according to the party.

The virtual rally was held on Sunday. Congress Social Media Head, Rohan Gupta said, “The unique thing about the rally was the large audience of more than 90,000 people, who watched the rally live, simultaneously at the same time on the Facebook page of Rahul Gandhi. With the current views of 8.8 lakh, 42,000 comments, 1.1 million reach and 6000 shares, making it one of the most successful virtual rallies.”

The rally was telecast on virtual mediums or social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube along with live LED screens across all districts of Punjab.

The party claimed 90,000 live views on Facebook Live are unprecedented for any political leader in India, showing the massive impact and curiosity about the rally.

Rahul may announce Punjab CM’s face on Feb 6

In his previous visit, Rahul Gandhi had assured workers that the party will decide CM candidate well ahead of the February 20 polling….reports Asian Lite News

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is likely to announce the chief minister’s face in his virtual address from Ludhiana city in Punjab on February 6, sources said on Thursday.

This will be his second visit to the state in less than a week.

In his previous visit, Rahul Gandhi had assured workers that the party will decide CM candidate well ahead of the February 20 polling.

With his assurance a power struggle is on between party state President Navjot Sidhu and Charanjit Singh Channi, the first Dalit Chief Minister of a state that is home to 32 per cent Scheduled Caste population, the country’s largest, to be the chief ministerial candidate.

Currently, voters have been getting tele-calls to give their opinion as to who should nominate the Congress as its chief ministerial candidate.

In the fray for 117 seats in Punjab are three prominent parties — the ruling Congress, the opposition Aam Aadmi Party and the Sanyukt Samaj Morcha, and two alliances — the SAD-BSP and the BJP-Punjab Lok Congress.

Punjab will go to polls in a single phase on February 20 and the counting of votes will take place on March 10.

Jakhar’s revelation triggers new crisis in Punjab

Jakhar’s assertions come at a time when the party is conducting an opinion tele-survey on who should the Congress nominate as its CM candidate. The race is hot between Channi, state’s first Dalit Chief Minister, and Sidhu, a Jat Sikh….writes Vishal Gulati

In an obvious embarrassment for the Congress ahead of announcement of its chief minister’s face for Punjab Assembly polls, former state unit party chief Sunil Jakhar, a prominent Hindu face, has spilled beans by saying Navjot Sidhu and Charanjit Channi were least favoured as the Chief Minister’s probable after Capt Amarinder Singh’s exit.

He said he was the first choice with 42 of the 79 legislators favoured his name, replacing incumbent Capt Amarinder Singh in last September.

Jakhar’s assertions come at a time when the party is conducting an opinion tele-survey on who should the Congress nominate as its CM candidate. The race is hot between Channi, state’s first Dalit Chief Minister, and Sidhu, a Jat Sikh.

Seeking votes for his nephew Sandeep Jakhar, the third generation who is in the fray from Abohar in Fazilka district, the stronghold of Jakhars for five decades, the former Congress chief said Chief Minister Charanjit Channi was preferred by only two legislators in an internal survey by the party based on telephonic conversation.

In a video Jakhar was heard saying the Congress high command had asked all 79 of the party’s Punjab MLAs to give their preference for the chief ministerial post after Captain Amarinder Singh resigned.

“Sunil Jakhar was favoured by 42 MLAs, Sukhjinder Randhawa got 16 votes and Preneet Kaur got support of 12 MLAs. Navjot Sidhu and Charanjit Singh Channi were liked by six and two MLAs, respectively,” Jakhar said.

“Despite being denied the top post, I am very happy that most MLAs trusted me. This is what I have earned in my career. I do not hold the post but the MLAs were in my favour,” he added.

With last week’s assurance by former Congress president Rahul Gandhi that workers will decide well ahead of the February 20 polling, a power struggle is on between Sidhu and Channi to be the chief ministerial candidate.

Currently, voters have been getting tele-calls to give their opinion as to who should the Congress nominate as its chief ministerial candidate. Those receiving the calls are also being asked whether Congress should reveal the name or not.

Political observers told IANS that it will be a tough task for the party high command to choose Channi, a Dalit Sikh, or Sidhu, a Jat Sikh, in a state with a population caste mix of roughly 32 per cent Dalits, 30 per cent Jat Sikhs and 40 per cent the rest.

“Most of the cabinet ministers and top leaders are standing behind Channi owing to his soft approach, easy accessibility and the most important, the biggest Dalit face. If the high command projects Sidhu as the chief minister’s face, it could upset the party’s Dalit vote bank,” a senior Congress leader told IANS, requesting anonymity.

“The crucial challenge against Sidhu is that he’s neither a Congress veteran nor enjoys a mass base. He was selected to lead the party at a time when the anti-incumbency of Amarinder Singh was at its peak. Sidhu helped greatly in overcoming the anger against the government by attacking its policies,” he said.

“Now after building an image of transferring power from the elite to the poor, the party can’t ignore Channi’s claim at this stage,” the Congress leader added.

In a bid to woo Dalit voters, Channi is contesting the polls from two reserved constituencies — Bhadaur in Barnala district and his pocket borough Chamkaur Sahib in Ropar district.

Seeing his growing influence and stature, the Chief Minister has been given the second seat Bhadaur to counter the dominance of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Barnala and its adjoining areas in Malwa region by consolidating the Scheduled Caste votes.

AAP hails probe into illegal sand mining allegations against Channi

AAP Punjab affairs co-in-charge Raghav Chadha told the media here that AAP had submitted a letter to the Governor and demanded an inquiry against Channi….reports Asian Lite News

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Monday welcomed the decision of Punjab Governor Banwari Lal Purohit for ordering the DGP to conduct a high-level inquiry into the allegations of illegal sand mining against Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi.

AAP Punjab affairs co-in-charge Raghav Chadha told the media here that AAP had submitted a letter to the Governor and demanded an inquiry against Channi. He thanked the Governor for accepting Aam Aadmi Party’s demand and hoped that Punjab Police would conduct a fair and independent investigation in the matter and punish the guilty.

Referring to the letter related to the order of inquiry, Chadha said the Governor has taken cognisance of the matter and has ordered DGP V.K. Bhawra to take action against Channi for illegal sand mafia his constituency Chamkaur Sahib’s village Jindapur.

The Governor has asked the DGP to conduct a high-level inquiry and hand over the report to him. Chadha appealed to the DGP and Punjab Police not to come under any kind of political pressure and register an FIR against Chief Minister Channi after conducting a fair and independent investigation into the whole matter.

Chadha said that they had already exposed the sand mafia in Chamkaur Sahib, the assembly constituency of the Chief Minister, and alleged that the Chief Minister and his relatives were associated with the sand mafia.

AAP candidate arrested

Kali Charan Yadav, the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) candidate from the Jungipur Assembly seat in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghazipur district, has been arrested for violation of model code of conduct, following the recovery of election campaigning material without the name of publisher or printer.

Inspector Rajesh Tripathi said a checking drive was being carried out near Rajwari underpass bridge on Varanasi-Ghazipur border on Sunday, when an SUV carrying flag of a political party was stopped.

On checking the vehicle, 120 pamphlets, five stickers, five flags and 62 caps of the AAP were recovered, he said.

The election campaigning material had no name and address of publisher/printer on them.

Yadav was arrested and a case has been registered against him under section 127 of Representation of the people Act and 171(F) of IPC, the inspector said.

Tripathi added that during initial investigation, Yadav said he was an AAP candidate and was carrying publicity material for his election campaigning.

When police sought the reason for not mentioning the name of publisher and printer as per the directives of the Election Commission of India, Yadav assured to provide a clarification of it.

However, when he failed to give a clarification, the police initiated legal action against him, said Tripathi.

Badal, 94, files nomination; becomes India’s oldest candidate

With the total immovable assets of Rs 6.71 crore and movable properties of Rs 8.4 crore, Badal is facing a case of alleged forgery of the constitution of the party in a Hoshiarpur court….writes VISHAL GULATI

With a century old regional political outfit Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) fighting this Assembly polls in Punjab to save its ‘sinking ship’ after a humiliating defeat in the 2017 Assembly polls is largely banking on its charismatic Parkash Singh Badal, 94, whose feet were touched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi owing to humility after filing his nomination papers for the Varanasi Lok Sabha constituency in 2019.

Also, for the first time SAD is testing waters after severing its ties with the BJP with which it joined hands in 1997 during the state polls and remained its oldest ally for 23 years.

SAD patriarch Badal, a founding member of the NDA who before parting ways had always referred to ties as ‘nau-maas da rishta’ (nail-and-flesh ties), has jumped into the fray in these polls.

Elderly Badal filed his nomination from his bastion Lambi in Muktsar district on Monday for the sixth time in a row. With this he’s the oldest candidate in the fray from the state that he has been retaining since 1997. This is his 13th Assembly election.

With the total immovable assets of Rs 6.71 crore and movable properties of Rs 8.4 crore, Badal is facing a case of alleged forgery of the constitution of the party in a Hoshiarpur court.

His son and SAD President Sukhbir Badal, the Ferozepur Lok Sabha member, is contesting from his stronghold Jalalabad for the fourth time.

His Bathinda Lok Sabha member wife Harsimrat Kaur has filed the nomination as covering candidate from Jalalabad, the seat in Fazilka district that has a sizeable population of the Rai Sikh community.

Harsimrat Kaur is also elderly Badal’s covering candidate from Lambi.

After filing his nomination papers, elderly Badal said, “I am continuing my relationship with the people of Lambi who have stood with me through thick and thin. I am also committed to nourishing the constituency always.”

He said he has complete confidence in the constituents.

“The people have made my campaign their campaign and informed me that they will ensure my victory with a thumping majority,” elderly Badal, who just recovered from Covid-19, told IANS.

Badal’s party, which is just six year elder to him, came into being on December 14, 1920, to free gurdwaras from the control of mahants (priests) appointed by the British government.

The Akali Dal, which aligned with the Congress during the pre-Independence period, is toeing core its ‘panthic’ ideology to safeguard the interests of Sikhs. It was set up a month after the formation of Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC).

Ever since 1997, the Akali Dal had fought all the elections in the state in alliance with the BJP, winning three Assembly elections, till 2020 when it objected to the three now revoked contentious farm laws.

Ahead of the Prime Minister’s visit to Punjab last month, Badal asked Modi to create the right atmosphere for his much-delayed visit to Punjab by first taking some concrete steps to expose the conspiracy behind the on-going incidents of sacrilege against Sikh faith and resolving the other major political, religious and economic issues facing the state.

He listed five major issues on which he said a prime ministerial package would lend credence and respectability to Modi’s visit to Ferozepur.

“As the PM, you would earn a lot of goodwill and my personal gratitude, if before coming here, you announce an economic, political, agricultural and territorial package to meet the demands of the Punjabis.”

The former Chief Minister also drew the PM’s attention to thousands of Sikh families awaiting justice for the massacre of 1984.

Badal had said the PM’s visit would then truly be a welcome gesture and would heal many past wounds inflicted by successive Congress governments.

He had also demanded a major agricultural economic package to pull the farmers out of the tragic crisis into which they have sunk as a result of agricultural indebtedness.

Badal had asked the PM to heed the expectations of Punjabis on the resolution of their other long-standing major demands, including the transfer of Chandigarh and other Punjabi-speaking areas and the resolution of the river waters issue along Riparian principle.

He had also drew the attention of the PM to the loss of over 800 lives in the struggle against the three back laws on agriculture and said that these sacrifices must be acknowledged by concrete gestures by the Union government to help their families.

In the 2017 Punjab Assembly elections, the Congress had won an absolute majority by winning 77 seats in the 117-member Punjab Assembly and ousted the SAD-BJP government after 10 years.

The AAP had emerged as the second-largest party, winning 20 seats. SAD won 15 seats, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured three seats.

Captain owes loan of Rs 2 crore

Amarinder is the candidate from Patiala (urban) seat. He will contest against Congress candidate and former Mayor Vishnu Sharma…reports Asian Lite News

Two-time Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh, who belongs to the erstwhile royal family owns no personal vehicle, but owed a loan of Rs 2 crore for a ‘royal’ farmhouse in the lower Shivalik hills near Chandigarh.

The assets worth Rs 3.55 crore were declared on Monday by Punjab Lok Congress (PLC) chief Capt Amarinder Singh.

However, the value of assets declared by the 80-year-old former Congress leader dropped massively as compared to that declared during 2017 assembly polls when he was with the Congress.

Amarinder is the candidate from Patiala (urban) seat. He will contest against Congress candidate and former Mayor Vishnu Sharma.

He had declared total assets worth Rs 86.33 crore including that of his wife former union minister Preneet Kaur when he had successfully contested from Amritsar Lok Sabha seat during 2014 Lok Sabha polls.

In his affidavit filed before the Returning Officer in Patiala, Amarinder Singh declared his gross movable assets and his wife’s worth Rs 3.55 crore and Rs 4.17 crore, respectively.

The scion of erstwhile royal state of Patiala, who owns the palatial new Moti Bagh palace in Patiala, has no criminal case. However, he is facing a complaint the income tax “evasion”.

‘Rahul’s claims of deciding CM’s face farce’

Even as he dubbed as farce Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s claims of deciding the chief minister face with inputs from the ground, Punjab Lok Congress (PLC) chief Capt Amarinder Singh on Monday predicted an abysmal defeat for Navjot Singh Sidhu from Amritsar East, which he had won in the past only with the support of the BJP.

Addressing the media after filing his nomination papers from Patiala Urban and inaugurating his party office there, the former chief minister termed as ridiculous Sidhu’s charge of his hand in pitting Bikram Singh Majithia against him by the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD).

“I’m not Majithia’s uncle,” quipped Capt Amarinder, adding with 38 per cent of the voters in Amritsar East being Hindus and 32 per cent Scheduled Castes, Sidhu’s defeat was certain. The BJP, as part of alliance with the PLC and SAD Sanyukt, has fielded a strong candidate from the constituency, he added.

On Rahul Gandhi’s statement that the Congress would announce its chief ministerial candidate in the state after taking inputs from the ground, Capt Amarinder said this was just theatrics. He pointed out that as per procedure, the people elect their MLAs and then the CLP elects the chief minister, “and so all this talk of is just drama”.

Asked to comment on the decision of the farmers to contest the polls, the former chief minister said it was their right to do so. He personally had always supported them, said Capt Amarinder, pointing out that his government had announced jobs and Rs 5 lakh to the kin of each of the farmers who died during the agitation against the farm laws.

Exuding confidence of the PLC-BJP-SAD Sanyukt alliance forming the next government in Punjab, Capt Amarinder said, in response to a question, the decision to allow some of the PLC candidates to contest on the BJP symbol was taken keeping in mind the voter demographics.

While four PLC candidates will contest on the BJP symbol in urban segments, two of their candidates will fight on the PLC symbol in the rural constituencies, he explained.

Rahul to begin Punjab campaign by paying obeisance at Golden Temple

He said in May his account gained 6,40,000 followers but since August it has fallen to zero…reports Asian Lite News

Former Congress President Rahul Gandhi will begin his campaign in Punjab for the upcoming Assembly elections on Thursday by paying a visit to Golden Temple in Amritsar, a party source said on Wednesday.

As per the schedule, the Congress leader will pay obeisance at Sri Harmandir Sahib and take part in Langar along with 117 other party candidates.

He would later visit Durgiana Mandir in Amritsar.

The Congress leader is also scheduled to visit Bhagwan Valmiki Tirath Sthal along with the candidates and pay obeisance there after which he would address the “Navi Soch Nava Punjab” virtual rally at Mithapur in Jalandhar.

Punjab will go to the polls for the 117 assembly seats on February 20.

Rahul writes to Twitter

Rahul Gandhi has written to Twitter questioning its policy on suppressing his reach to his followers and not curbing hate speeches in the country.

The letter written on December 27 says, “It is perplexing that growth in my Twitter follower has suddenly been suppressed, with nearly 20 million followers on my Twitter account very active adding 8 to 10 thousand followers daily.”

He said in May his account gained 6,40,000 followers but since August it has fallen to zero.

“I have been albeit discreetly informed by people of Twitter India that they are under immense pressure by the government to silence my voice,” he wrote.

Rahul said to twitter, “you have enormous responsibility that twitter does not actively help in the growth of authoritarianism in India as the world is watching.”

He also mentioned how his account was blocked but Twitter at that time had said that following the complaint by the NCPCR, Gandhi’s Twitter account was temporarily suspended and the party, from his official handle, tweeted that due process was being followed for its restoration.

Rahul Gandhi, who joined Twitter in April 2015 and has 19.6 million followers on the social media platform, is expected to stay connected via other social media platforms.

Captain to contest from Patiala, releases list of 22 candidates

The PLC’s share in seat allocation for the Majha region currently stands at seven, while the Doaba region accounts for four seats…reports Asian Lite News

Capt Amarinder Singh on Sunday announced the Punjab Lok Congress (PLC) candidates from 22 constituencies for the February 20 polls, with clear focus on winnability while ensuring due representation across regions and various sections of society.

He himself is in fray from his home constituency of Patiala (Urban). Four of the 22 candidates belong to the Scheduled Castes (SC) community, three to Other Backward Class (OBC) community, while five are Hindu faces (three Pandits and two Aggarwals).

The PLC has currently got 37 of the 117 seats in the state as part of its alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and SAD (Sanyukt), with discussions still in progress on possibly another five seats for the party.

Of the 37 seats in the PLC kitty, the maximum of 26 are from Malwa region, which Capt Amarinder had single-handedly transformed into a game-changer for the Congress in the 2007 polls with his ground-breaking Water Termination Act of 2004 as well as the introduction of BT cotton.

More recently, it was Capt Amarinder’s strong and unequivocal support to the agitating farmers in the region, which was the epicentre of their protest before it shifted to the Delhi borders, that played a decisive role in the final outcome to the issue.

The former Chief Minister’s hand is being seen in the eventual revocation of the farm laws by the Centre. Also Capt Amarinder has strong family ties with the region, which used to be part of the erstwhile royal estate of Patiala.

The PLC’s share in seat allocation for the Majha region currently stands at seven, while the Doaba region accounts for four seats.

Releasing the first list of nominees, the PLC leader said all these candidates have strong political credentials and are well known faces in their respective constituencies.

There is one woman in this first list. Farzana Alam Khan, a former SAD MLA and wife of late DGP Izhar Alam Khan, will contest from Malerkotla in the Malwa region.

Besides Capt Amarinder, who had on Saturday itself announced his decision to fight from his home constituency of Patiala (Urban), there are eight other Jat Sikhs in the well balanced first list.

In addition to Capt Amarinder and Farzana Alam, another key candidate from Malwa region is the current Mayor of Municipal Corporation Patiala, Sanjeev Sharma, who was President of District Youth Congress for a number of years. Sharma will contest the Patiala (Rural) seat.

Kamaldeep Saini, former PPCC secretary, has been finalised as the candidate from Kharar, while Jagmohan Sharma, who was President of District Congress Committee, Ludhiana and is currently the PLC district president, has been selected for Ludhiana (East).

The Ludhiana (South) seat will be represented in the PLC by Satinderpal Singh Tajpuri, the son of a former Cooperation Minister in the previous Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) government.

Prem Mittal, an SAD ex-MLA from Mansa and former Senior Deputy Mayor of Ludhiana, will contest from Atamnagar, while Damanjeet Singh Mohi, an active Youth Congress functionary who has formerly been Sarpanch, Zila Parishad member and Chairman of Market Committee Mullanpur, will fight from Dakha.

A popular Dalit face and a retired PPS officer, Mukhtiar Singh has been nominated for the party ticket from the reserved constituency of Nihalsingh Wala.

The Dharamkot seat ticket has gone to Ravinder Singh Garewal, an advocate, agriculturist and businessman. Amarjeet Sharma, a medical practitioner who has been working at the grassroots for over a decade, has been pitched from Rampura Phul.

An established businessman, transporter and agriculturist, Raj Nambardar is a prominent Hindu face from Bathinda and will contest the polls from Bathinda (Urban).

Incidentally, his father Dev Raj Nambardar also contested from Bathinda in 1985. Bathinda (Rural), a reserved constituency, will be contested by Sawera Singh, son of late MLA Makhan Singh and currently Vice Chairman, Punjab Water Resources Management Corporation.

The PLC candidate from another reserved seat, Budhalada, is Subedar Bhola Singh Hasanpur, who served the Indian Army for 28 years and was unanimously elected Sarpanch of his village.

Three-time Municipal Councillor and former member Improvement Trust, Barnala as well as ex-President SC Wing of SAD, Dharam Singh Fauji has been selected as the PLC candidate from Bhadaur (SC).

The Sanaur seat will be contested by business and youth social activist Bikramjit Inder Singh Chahal, son of Capt Amarinder Singh’s advisor B.I.S. Chahal, with the Samana candidature going to Surinder Singh Kherki, former Member of Panchayat Samiti.

In the Majha region, Tejinder Singh Randhawa is the candidate for Fatehgarh Churrian, while ex-MLA and former Chairman of Forests Corporation Harjinder Singh Thekedar will fight Amrtisar (South).

The first list of candidates from Doaba region includes Amandeep Singh, former Punjab Congress spokesperson, for Bholath, and former Indian Hockey Team captain, Ajitpal Singh, for Nakodar.

Vows to empower girls

On the National Girl Child Day, former Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh on Monday resolved to empower the girls by giving them education, freedom and equal space.

Singh’s fledgling the Punjab Lok Congress (PLC) is contesting the Punjab Assembly polls in alliance with the BJP and SAD (Sanyukt),

“On #NationalGirlChildDay, I salute our girls and their accomplishments in various fields,” Amarinder Singh tweeted.

“They are the real change-makers, truly our future. Let us resolve to empower them, give them education, freedom and equal space and see the wonders they do,” he further tweeted.

Amarinder Singh on Sunday released the first list of candidates for 22 constituencies for the February 20 Punjab Assembly polls and announced that he will contest from his home constituency — Patiala (Urban).

Rival groups jockey for Congress CM’s face in Punjab

Party insiders say that the leadership is in favour of playing it safe for the moment by not naming any chief ministerial candidate…reports Asian Lite News

Everything is in a name when it comes to announcing the chief ministers face, it seems!

Just about a week after the AAP declared comedian-turned-politician Bhagwant Mann as its chief ministerial candidate, whispers in the Congress party have become louder over announcing a name for the coveted post.

The demand by Congress leaders in Punjab comes at a time when both Charanjit Singh Channi, the state’s first Dalit Chief Minister, and the party’s state unit chief Navjot Singh Sidhu have made clear their desire to occupy the seat, while former party chief Sunil Jakhar is the silent runner in the race.

Delhi is cautious about announcing the name as it has the potential to create trouble for the party with elections just round the corner.

In the 2017 Punjab assembly polls, ending all speculation with just a week to go before the election, then party vice-president Rahul Gandhi had announced that Amarinder Singh would head the government if the Congress was voted to power.

“Amarinder Singh has given his blood and sweat for Punjab. He has worked day and night for the development of Punjab. He has always worked for the Punjabi and Sardar (Sikh) community. He is going to be our chief minister,” Gandhi had said at his first political rally in the Akali Dal assembly stronghold of Majitha.

This time too the clamour within the party has been increasing to announce Channi as the Congress’ face.

Party insiders say that the leadership is in favour of playing it safe for the moment by not naming any chief ministerial candidate.

But the key opponents in the state — the AAP, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD)- Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) combine and the BJP in alliance with Amarinder Singh’s new party Punjab Lok Congress and the Samyukt Samaj Morcha, the fledging coalition of farm unions — are making an issue out of it. The prominent faces for the parties are Channi, 58, Mann, 48, Sukhbir Singh Badal, 59, Amarinder Singh, 80, and Balbir Singh Rajewal, 78, respectively.

The announcement of the Congress chief ministerial face is crucial with the pollsters predicting that the Congress could either retain the helm with a photo finish close to the halfway mark of 59 or no party will get a clear majority, despite the anti-incumbency sentiment against previous incumbent Amarinder Singh, who was unceremoniously removed after a bitter power tussle with Sidhu last September.

Cricketer-turned-politician and a well-known TV personality Sidhu, 58, who in the game once rebelled against the Indian cricket team captain and in politics left the BJP in 2016 to join the Congress a year later, is slamming the central leadership by asking: “What’s a ‘baraat’ without a ‘dulha’ (bridegroom)?
