Legislation to pave way for new National Holocaust Memorial in UK

Located next to the Houses of Parliament, the memorial will serve as a powerful reminder to the whole of society of the Holocaust, its victims and where prejudice can lead if unchallenged…reports Asian Lite News

UK government will introduce new legislation to progress the construction of a national Holocaust memorial. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced in the House of Commons yesterday (25 January) that the Holocaust Memorial Bill will update historic legislation, removing a statutory obstacle that has previously prevented the building of a new memorial and learning centre in Victoria Tower Gardens in Westminster.

Located next to the Houses of Parliament, the memorial will serve as a powerful reminder to the whole of society of the Holocaust, its victims and where prejudice can lead if unchallenged.

Rishi Sunak, said, “This important Bill brings us one step closer to delivering a national Holocaust Memorial and Learning Centre at the heart of our democracy in Westminster, where it rightly belongs. The Memorial will honour the memory of those who were so cruelly murdered and preserve the testimonies of brave survivors so that future generations will never forget the horrors of the holocaust. As the remaining survivors become older and fewer in number, it is vital that we push ahead with the Memorial which is supported by all major political parties.”

Secretary of State for Levelling up, Housing and Communities, Michael Gove said, “As the Holocaust moves from living history, to history, it becomes ever more important that we take the time to remember the six million Jewish men, women and children murdered and pay tribute to the survivors. We are committed to building the Memorial next to Parliament, a site which reflects its national significance and is close to other important memorials including the Cenotaph. We owe it to Holocaust survivors, to the British people and future generations to remember where hatred can lead.”

Rt Hon Ed Balls and Rt Hon Lord Eric Pickles, Co-chairs of the UK Holocaust Memorial Foundation said, “As the generation of brave Holocaust survivors passes away, we have a duty to create this memorial to make sure that the memory and the truth of the Holocaust is preserved. Victoria Tower Gardens, at the heart of Westminster and alongside the great symbol and heart of our democracy, is absolutely the right place to construct the national Memorial to the Holocaust.”

Manfred Goldberg BEM, a Holocaust survivor who was held captive in Stutthof concentration camp, Poland, said, “Several years ago survivors were promised a Holocaust Memorial in close proximity to the Houses of Parliament. I am a 92 year old survivor who would be so grateful to be alive when this project, uniquely situated next to the Mother of Parliaments, comes to fruition.”

Planning consent for the Holocaust Memorial to be built in Victoria Tower Gardens was granted in July 2021, but the decision was quashed by the High Court in April 2022 due to historic legislation that requires the garden to be maintained as a garden open to the public.

The memorial and learning centre will be free to visitors, with timed entry tickets.

Careful design means the memorial will enhance the gardens, ensuring they continue to provide an important public garden available to residents and visitors to Westminster. Paths and seating will be more attractive, accessible and landscaping improvements will enhance the local environment, maintaining public access.

The proposal to construct a new national Memorial to the Holocaust, with an accompanying learning centre, was announced by the then Prime Minister with cross-party support in January 2015, and the decision to build the memorial at Victoria Tower Gardens was announced in January 2016.

Following an international competition, a design team of Adjaye Associates, Ron Arad Associates and Gustafson Porter + Bowman was selected. A planning application was submitted in December 2018 and planning consent was granted in July 2021, following a lengthy public inquiry.

A High Court judgment in April 2022 found that the London County Council (Improvements) Act 1900 imposed an obligation to maintain Victoria Tower Gardens as a public garden, and that this obligation was an obstacle to construction of the Holocaust Memorial at that site. Based on this conclusion, the High Court quashed the decision to grant planning consent.

Sunak denies being ‘hopelessly weak’ over Zahawi

The prime minister’s official spokesman and his senior advisers spent about 35 minutes after PMQs facing questions from the media about Nadhim Zahawi…reports Asian Lite News

Rishi Sunak defended his decision to launch an ethics inquiry into Nadhim Zahawi rather than sacking him, at Prime Minister’s Questions.

Sir Keir Starmer said the PM was “hopelessly weak” for not firing the minister for “seeking to avoid tax”. “Is he starting to wonder if this job is just too big for him?” the Labour leader asked.

Sunak said it was Sir Keir who was weak because “he has no principles just petty politics”.

Downing Street initially said Sunak’s tax arrangements were “confidential” when asked by Labour if he had ever paid a penalty to the UK tax authorities, like Mr Zahawi.

But the PM’s spokesperson later confirmed that he had not, saying: “The prime minister has never paid a penalty to HMRC.” The PM will publish his tax returns “in due course”, Downing Street has said.

In the House of Commons, Sunak said it would have been “politically expedient” to sack Mr Zahawi as a minister before PMQs got under way at noon but he believed in “proper due process”.

That was why, he said, he had asked ask his ethics adviser to investigate whether the Conservative Party chairman had broken ministerial rules.

It will be up to the PM to decide whether to sack Zahawi if his ethics adviser says he has broken the ministerial code. Zahawi was chancellor at the time the estimated £4.8m settlement was agreed with HMRC.

Sir Keir asked Sunak why he had said at last week’s PMQs that Zahawi had “addressed this matter in full”. “Since I commented on this matter last week more information, including a statement from the minister without portfolio [Mr Zahawi], has entered the public domain which is why it’s right that we do establish the facts,” the prime minister said.

He accused Sir Keir of “simple political opportunism” for urging him to appoint an ethics adviser then wanting a decision before they had investigated the case.

And he claimed “the difference between him [Sir Keir] and me is I stand by my values and my principles even when it is difficult,” accusing the Labour leader of indulging in “petty politics”.

Sir Keir said the PM’s “failure” to sack Zahawi showed “how hopelessly weak he is – a prime minister overseeing chaos, overwhelmed at every turn”. “He can’t say when ambulances will get to heart attack victims again. He can’t say when the prisons system will keep streets safe again. He can’t even deal with tax avoiders in his own cabinet,” said the Labour leader.

“Is he starting to wonder if this job is just too big for him?”

The prime minister’s official spokesman and his senior advisers spent about 35 minutes after PMQs facing questions from the media about Nadhim Zahawi.

It became something of an endurance slalom event, his team swerving this way or that to avoid many of the questions.

They wouldn’t tell us whether Rishi Sunak had talked to Zahawi before last week’s PMQs, when the PM said the whole thing was sorted.

We were told the PM has confidence in Zahawi, even though Sunak said it would have been politically expedient to sack him.

To be fair, any serving minister technically has to have the confidence of the prime minister. But the truth is we know that confidence is draining away, if not yet entirely emptied.

And a broader front is opening up – the weaponising of wealth, with Labour and the SNP pointing to the PM’s vast wealth too. However admirably accumulated, for those at the top of politics who are mega rich there is always likely to be political vulnerability around a perception of being detached from the lives of ordinary folk and having concerns and issues over tax, for instance, that seem other-worldly.

Zahawi faces exit

Prime Minister orders probe into the tax affairs of the chairman of his governing Conservative Party, saying there are “questions that need answering” about the dealings…reports Asian Lite News

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has ordered an investigation into the tax affairs of the chairman of his governing Conservative Party, saying there are “questions that need answering” about the dealings.

Sunak said that he had asked his independent ethics adviser Laurie Magnus to look into Nadhim Zahawi’s multimillion-pound case, which relates to the 55-year-old’s co-founding of opinion polling firm YouGov in 2000 before he became a member of Parliament.

“Integrity and accountability is really important to me … There are questions that need answering and that is why I have asked our independent adviser to get to the bottom of everything,” Sunak told reporters.

He added that Zahawi would remain as party chairman during the investigation and had agreed to “fully cooperate” with the probe.

Zahawi said he welcomed the move and looked forward to explaining the “facts of the issue”, adding he would not discuss it further while the investigation was under way.

He has previously said the United Kingdom’s tax authorities ruled he had been “careless” with his declarations but had not deliberately made an error to pay less tax.

Zahawi has said questions were raised about his tax affairs when he was made finance minister last year by former Prime Minister Boris Johnson, prompting him to raise them with government officials and the tax office, which disagreed with the number of shares given to his father.

“So that I could focus on my life as a public servant, I chose to settle the matter and pay what they said was due, which was the right thing to do,” he said in a statement on Saturday.

He also said the tax office found he had not set up offshore tax arrangements, but the statement did not address whether he paid a penalty to the tax office.

A tax policy website – Tax Policy Associates – has estimated that Zahawi should have paid 3.7 million pounds ($4.6m) based on the capital gains tax incurred by the sale of tranches of shares in YouGov worth more than 20 million pounds ($24.7m).

The Guardian newspaper has reported that tax authorities had imposed a 30 percent penalty on top of the owed tax.

According to the government’s website, a penalty of 30 percent can be paid when there is “lack of reasonable care” or when the error is considered to be deliberate.

In the three months since Sunak became prime minister, his government has been buffeted by questions over the probity of some ministers and legislators after he promised to lead the country with “integrity, professionalism and accountability”.

The opposition Labour Party said Sunak, who assumed office after his two predecessors were brought down first by scandal and then economic chaos, was too weak to sack Zahawi.

“Everybody knows it’s wrong. He clearly isn’t going to resign and so the prime minister needs to show some leadership,” Labour Party leader Keir Starmer told reporters on Monday.

“This is a test of the prime minister. He promised us, his first words were integrity and accountability. Well, if those words mean anything, the prime minister should sack him and sack him today.”

Zahawi not planning to resign

Meanwhile, Zahawi is defying demands to quit as Conservative Party chairman despite paying a penalty to resolve a multimillion-pound tax dispute with HM Revenue & Customs.

Allies said on Monday that the former chancellor “absolutely” will not be quitting amid growing pressure over his estimated £5 million settlement.

Further “cronyism” allegations emerged as Rishi Sunak was already being urged by Labour to sack Mr Zahawi, who he brought back into a Cabinet-attending role after entering No 10.

Zahawi is also facing new allegations that he falsely told officials he had not exchanged WhatsApp messages with Conservative former prime minister David Cameron, who was lobbying for government loans for Greensill Capital.

The Times reported that it later emerged the pair had discussed the since-collapsed firm when messages were released to a select committee inquiry.

Zahawi said “morning” to waiting reporters and cameras as he arrived at Conservative Campaign Headquarters (CCHQ), but gave no comment on his financial affairs or position.

Former Downing Street communications chief Sir Craig Oliver said Mr Zahawi is “hanging on by a thread”. “I think he’s in serious trouble, you cannot be Conservative Party chairman and not go out and face the media,” he told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme.

“The problem for Nadhim Zahawi at the moment is it doesn’t all add up. Why did you take the job as chancellor when you were clearly in dispute with the HMRC, and he is yet to come out with an answer that is satisfying or feels comfortable on that point.”

Seizing on the Greensill allegations, deputy Labour leader Angela Rayner said “yet another” of Mr Zahawi’s stories was “unravelling”.

Virgin Atlantic names plane after Queen Elizabeth II

The design of the ‘Queen of the Skies’, notably is painted with an image of a redheaded woman wearing a dress in Virgin’s trademark red shade…reports Asian Lite News

British airline Virgin Atlantic has named a plane after Queen Elizabeth II to honour the late monarch and her 70-year reign in the United Kingdom.

Repurposing its phrase name in honour of the late British Queen, the airline’s brand new Airbus A330neo, with the registration G-VEII, has been dubbed Queen of the Skies.

This is not the first time the airlines are doing something like this. Previously as well, the airline has occasionally named its planes after notable women in history, including British suffragette leader Emmeline Pankhurst, singer Billie Holiday and Diana, Princess of Wales.

“We’re delighted to soon be welcoming ‘Queen of the Skies’ to our fleet and hope that it serves as a fitting tribute to an unforgettable, much-loved monarch,” CNN quoted Corneel Koster, chief customer and operations officer at Virgin Atlantic as saying.

Queen Elizabeth, who passed away in September 2022 visited more than 120 countries during her reign. In 2019, the A330neo was delivered amid great excitement. Long, narrow wings on wide-body aircraft reduce air drag and result in fuel savings.

The design of the ‘Queen of the Skies’, notably is painted with an image of a redheaded woman wearing a dress in Virgin’s trademark red shade.

“Just like Queen Elizabeth during her historic 70-year reign, Virgin Atlantic is proud to fly the flag for the United Kingdom around the world,” said Corneel Koster, chief customer and operations officer at Virgin Atlantic, in a statement.

“We’re delighted to soon be welcoming ‘Queen of the Skies’ to our fleet and hope that it serves as a fitting tribute to an unforgettable, much-loved monarch.”

Queen Elizabeth, who died in September 2022, was a frequent traveler during her reign, visiting more than 120 countries.

The Royal Air Force plane that carried her coffin from Edinburgh to London ahead of her funeral set a record on the flight-tracking website FlighRadar24. The 72-minute flight was followed by 4.79 million people on Flightradar24’s website and mobile app, plus an additional 296,000 who tracked the plane on YouTube.

Manish Tiwari gets ‘Freedom of the City of London’ title

Freedom ceremonies take place in the Chamberlain’s Court at Guildhall and are usually conducted by the Clerk of the Court or his Assistant…reports Asian Lite News

India-born advertising and marketing honcho Manish Tiwari has been bestowed with the prestigious ‘Freedom of the City of London’ title at the Chamberlains Court at Guildhall in recognition of his outstanding achievements.

Tiwari is the founder and chairman of Here and Now 365, an advertising and marketing agency that works with diaspora communities across the UK and Europe.

“I’m honoured to be granted the Freedom of the City of London… at the Guildhall. Thrilled to be sharing this legacy with historical figures and dignitaries — Mr (Winston) Churchill, Mrs (Margaret) Thatcher, and Mr (Jawaharlal) Nehru, contemporary statesmen like Mr John Kerry and modern legends such as Harry Kane,” Tiwari wrote in a LinkedIn post.

Touted as one of the oldest surviving traditional ceremonies still in existence today’, the tradition of conferring the title is believed to have started in 1237, according to a statement.

Freedom ceremonies take place in the Chamberlain’s Court at Guildhall and are usually conducted by the Clerk of the Court or his Assistant.

Tiwari was invited to read the Declaration of a Freeman’ and signed the Freeman’s Declaration Book.

He was presented the Copy of the Freedom — a parchment document with the name of the recipient along with a copy of the Rules for the Conduct of Life’ which date from the mid-18th century.

“The City of London is where I got my very first clients from and I’m honoured to be a part of this glorious tradition,” Tiwari’s LinkedIn post read.

Armed with a degree in Engineering, Tiwari went to an advertising school in Ahmedabad before joining the Mumbai theatre circuit.

“What made my day was seeing a copy of Jawaharlal Nehru’s signature on the roll as an Honorary Freeman within their archives,” Tiwari added.

The term ‘Freeman’ means someone who was not the property of a feudal lord but enjoyed privileges such as the right to earn money and own land, according to a UK government website.

Town dwellers who were protected by the charter of their town or city were often free — hence the term ‘Freedom’ of the City.

“To date, all liverymen are required to be freemen of the city, and crucially it’s these liverymen who elect the Lord Mayor and the Sheriffs of the Corporation of London,” Tiwari said in his post.

Before 1996, the Freedom was only open to British or Commonwealth Citizens, but now it has been extended globally, admitting persons of any nationality either via nomination or by being presented by a Livery Company.

The legacy is shared by historical figures such as Queen Elizabeth II, Florence Nightingale, and legends like Stephen Hawking, Nelson Mandela and actor Morgan Freeman.

PML-N London plans return after twin blows from Imran

How Imran Khan and Pervaiz Elahi have politically outsmarted Nawaz and his party’s calculations came as a bitter surprise for the Leaguers.

After having received serious political blows, one after the other, from Imran Khan in Punjab province during the last two consecutive days, the PML-N London is considering coming back to Pakistan before it is too late, the media reported.

For some in the party, it is already too late and now there is not much that can be done because of the irreparable political cost that the PML-N has to pay because of its early last year decision of removing the Imran Khan government and coming into power, The News reported.

For the bad luck of the N-League, Shehbaz Sharif-led PDM government is also not performing and the issues like worsening economic conditions and price hike are contributing to further unpopularity of the party.

“We had thought that through our good governance and economic turnaround, the PMLN would get its popularity back but that is happening mainly because of growing financial challenges and price hike,” a senior PMLN leader said.

Imran Khan at PTI Azadi March (Twitter)

The party sources admit that ever since the removal of the Imran Khan government, the popularity of the PML-N is on decline whereas PTI is going up and up, The News reported.

The last two days, it is said, were shocking for the PML-N and its top leadership.

How Imran Khan and Pervaiz Elahi have politically outsmarted Nawaz and his party’s calculations came as a bitter surprise for the Leaguers.

Nawaz and Maryam, both of whom are in London, were assured that neither Pervaiz Elahi has a majority to get a vote of confidence nor there is any chance of the provincial assembly’s dissolution.

To their utter disappointment, Imran Khan succeeded on both counts.

While the PML-N top leadership in London was not over with the shock of a successful vote of confidence by Pervaiz Elahi, it got another shock the very next day when the latter signed the advice for the dissolution of the Punjab Assembly.

According to a report following the Wednesday night events, Nawaz had reportedly conveyed his anger to the party’s Punjab leadership and had directed it to ensure the Punjab Assembly is not dissolved. It could not be prevented either.

Maryam Nawaz was already planning to come back mid-February but after the PML-N having been seriously jolted by Imran Khan’s moves in Punjab, the London leadership is reconsidering their plan.

Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz Sharif (Photo Courtesy Twitter@MaryamNSharif)

Now besides Maryam, there is also consideration about the timing of Nawaz Sharif’s return. In case of election date for Punjab, it is said, both may hurriedly rush to Pakistan, The News reported.

Imran Khan’s politics, supported by the failures of the PDM government in Islamabad, it is admitted, has considerably shrunk the political space for the PML-N in Punjab, which has been the party’s stronghold for the last few decades.

“Expecting from Shehbaz Sharif government and the PML-N’s second tier leadership to create space for the top London leadership to come and make the party popular like before is a faulty policy,” a PML-N leader said.

He added that the leadership does not wait for the space to be created by others but it through its own charisma and political moves wins the hearts and minds of the people. For this, it is said, the London leadership has to come to Pakistan.

The PML-N source said that now there is no hurdle in the return of Nawaz Sharif, The News reported.

BAPIO in UK gears up to save NHS; seeks educational ties with India

The British Association of Physicians of Indian origin (BAPIO) and BAPIO Training Academy (BTA) UK have drawn up plans to forge tie-ups between Indian hospitals and UK based medical education Universities, Rahul Laud reports

The latest two tie ups and signing of MoUs in the last two months- September-November 2022 between British Association of Physicians of Indian origin (BAPIO) and BAPIO Training Academy (BTA) UK and Bangalore hospitals – Gleneagles and Vydehi Super speciality (formerly Mallya hospital) demonstrates the fact that the vast Indian medical community that serves the NHS in the UK has been an active and conscientious supporter of the NHS system. They have cherished the values of top class quality patient care in the UK. The tie ups are with the aim of developing and providing world-class training and exchange programs for doctors and nurses in India to meet the growing demands of effective and safe delivery of emergencies.

Extreme left Chandru Iyer, Deputy High Commissioner , UK in Bangalore with BAPIO and hospital teams.

BAPIO with its Education Academy in the UK has actively geared up its resources to mitigate the current crisis faced by the NHS system. Given an Estimated lack of 12,000 doctors and 50,000 nurses in the UK, the BAPIO is seeking tie-ups with leading hospitals in India and engage in training and ensure trained professionals are recruited in both the countries.

Chandru Iyer, as the Deputy High Commissioner UK in Bangalore in his tweet said, “Such tie ups will enhance collaborative training avenues for Indian medical students and professionals in the UK.” It has been BAPIO’S strategy to promote professional & clinical excellence. Prof Parag Singhal, Executive Director- BTA and National Secretary –BAPIO explained, “This training initiative is designed specially to help International doctors gain experience at core and higher levels in UK hospitals.” The BTA Indo-UK Training Programme has been developed in partnership with University of South Wales and Kingsway Hospitals.

The Indo-UK Training Programmes organised by Prof Parag Singhal under the auspices of Bapio Training Academy has been devised to assist Indian doctors seeking higher qualification and Training and as aspiring career in medicine in India and help realising the dream of Ayushman Bharat.

Prof Dr Parag Singhal

An Advanced Specialty Training Program is designed by providing structured clinical training to candidates in Indian Institutions/Hospitals for 2 years and 2 years in the U.K. supported by enrollment in MBA in Healthcare leadership from UK University.

Singhal elaborated that the purpose is, “To train highly skilled Indian physicians in Family and General Medicine, Paediatrics, Psychiatry and Emergency Medicine and Leadership and Research in order to manage, lead and develop especially Family and General Medicine in India, need of the hour in India. Family and General Medicine is the backbone of any robust health service.”

Outlining the Scheme, Singhal elaborated, “During the 2 years, the trainees will work at Indian Hospitals / Institutes (chosen sites) with local trainers and with external training from U.K. faculty. Following completion of training in India, these trainees will receive further 2 years training in the U.K. and will complete all the necessary exams and milestones.”

BTA is the lead organization for this programme and is the link between India and UK. BTA will be responsible for creating a UK visiting faculty, coordinating the faculty visits, induction and mentoring. This unique and innovative programme is a great example of living bridge between U.K. and India and benefits all with India getting trained workforce to help with Ayushman Bharat, U.K. securing a pipeline of good quality doctors to address their workforce crisis.

India is now producing over 82,000 medical graduates every year through its network of 576 medical colleges and the Indian Government has shown keen commitment to reforms in medical profession and education by a series of initiatives as National Health Agency (Ayushman Bharat) & National Medical Commission (NMC), New AIIMS etc. in the health sector.

“However, there are limited numbers of Post Graduate training positions and more so for positions that offer a high level of training. Indian medical schools use similar textbooks and curriculum to the UK, which means knowledge and skills are largely transferable between the two systems. Large numbers of doctors of Indian origin already practice in the NHS providing a useful support network for new arrivals,” Singhal further explained.

British training is internationally recognized and is attractive to doctors in India, especially to those who are unable to obtain a PG seat in India.
