BJP MP seeks majority to remove “secular” from preamble

The party would also need to come to power in more than 20 states for this, the six-time Lok Sabha MP from Karnataka said….reports Asian Lite News

Six years since Anantkumar Hegde said the BJP would change the Constitution to do away with the word “secular” in its preamble, the BJP MP exhorted voters to ensure a two-thirds majority for the party in Lok Sabha to amend the country’s founding document.

The BJP needs a two-thirds majority in both Houses of Parliament to amend the Constitution and “set right distortions and unnecessary additions made to it by the Congress”, Hedge said, going on to explain the numbers required to amend the preamble of the Constitution.

The party would also need to come to power in more than 20 states for this, the six-time Lok Sabha MP from Karnataka said.

“If the Constitution has to be amended – the Congress fundamentally distorted the Constitution by forcefully filling unnecessary things in it, especially by bringing in laws that were aimed at suppressing the Hindu society – if all of this has to be changed, it is not possible with this (current) majority. If we think it can be done as Congress is not there in Lok Sabha and PM Modi has a two-thirds majority in Lok Sabha, and keep quiet, it is not possible,” he said, as he stressed the BJP’s need to have a two-thirds majority in Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, and also win two-thirds of the states, to bring changes in the Constitution.

The NDA winning more than 400 seats in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls would eventually help muster a similar majority in the Rajya Sabha and come to power in two-thirds of the states, he said.

Pointing out that in the recent Rajya Sabha polls in Karnataka, three seats were won by the Congress, while BJP got only one, the MP said that if Congress’s number increases, any Constitutional amendment made by the BJP government would pass the Rajya Sabha.

Citing the example of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, he said that it was passed in the Lok Sabha and later in the Rajya Sabha “with effort”. But several state governments did not approve it, and hence it could not be implemented, he pointed out.

“Now government plans to implement it through an amendment. If not, the law and order will go out of hands and anti-nationals will have a free run,” he said.

“If we win more than 400 Lok Sabha seats, we can win the assembly seats. Because of this more than 20 states will come to us, and we will have a two-thirds majority among the state governments,” he said.

In 2017, Mr Hegde, the then Union Minister of State for Skill Development, courted controversy for his comments about changing the Constitution.

Seeking to end the controversy that stalled parliamentary proceedings at the time, Mr Hegde subsequently apologised in the Lok Sabha after a nudge by the Speaker but maintained his statement was distorted.

Reacting to Mr Hegde’s statement today, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister and state Congress chief DK Shivakumar said this showed that the BJP is anti-Constitution.

“Let him do it, amend the Constitution… this shows that the BJP government (at the Centre) and the BJP MP are against the Constitution given by Babasaheb Ambedkar. Let him get it stamped by the Prime Minister,” he said.

Every party wants me, says Paswan

Former Lok Janshakti Party president Chirag Paswan asserted that every party wants him to be on its side, indicating he could tilt towards the one that offered a better bargain.

Paswan, an NDA ally, has been getting feelers from the ‘Mahagathbandhan’, the opposition coalition in Bihar.

Addressing a rally in the Sahebanj assembly segment, Chirag dropped ample hints that he was weighing his options and could tilt towards the side with a better bargain.

“I can see the posse of media persons here who are anxious to know whom Chirag Paswan is aligned with. I wish to tell them that Chirag Paswan is aligned only with the people of Bihar,” said the young leader, who has often sworn by his loyalty towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi, likening him to Lord Ram and himself to Lord Hanuman.

“Every party, every coalition wants Chirag Paswan to be on its side,” he said, adding that this was because tpeople were enamored with his “Bihar first Bihari first” vision that seeks to pull the state out of chronic backwardness.

In his speech, he made yet another attempt to project himself as true heir to his late father Ram Vilas Paswan, calling himself “sher ka beta”.

He refrained from mentioning by name bete noires in the NDA, Nitish Kumar, the Bihar chief minister who heads the JD(U), and Union minister, uncle Pashupati Kumar Paras, who split the late leader’s party.

The young leader, however, spoke at length about the “conspiracies” he had to face, “aimed at breaking my home, my family and my party, though I have demonstrated that Chirag Paswan cannot be cowed down”.

The rally at Sahebanj under the Vaishali Lok Sabha seat, which the LJP won in the last two elections, is being seen as a fresh attempt by Paswan to claim his father’s legacy, after having earlier declared that the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), a splinter group that he now heads, will contest Hajipur, which the late leader had represented several times.

Predictably, the nephew’s offensive has not got down well with Rashtriya Lok Janshakti Party (RLJP) headed by Paras, who is the sitting MP from Hajipur, and has made it clear that he will seek re-election from the seat.

‘INDIA bloc is for the future of country’

Senior Congress leader Mukul Wasnik on Friday asserted that all partners in the INDIA bloc were together…reports Asian Lite News

Reiterating his support for the alliance, National Conference chief Farooq Abdullah on Saturday said that he is sure that INDIA bloc will always grow and it is for the future of the country.

“I am sure that the INDIA bloc will always grow. It is for the future of the country. It wants democracy and a secular India where we all can live in peace, harmony and progress. Indian Constitution was framed on these lines that we all are one,” he said.

Further, responding to PM Modi’s announcement to slash prices on LPG, Farooq Abdullah said “It is a very good thing. The poor will benefit but it remains to be seen how the prices will increase again after the government is formed after the elections.”

Earlier, with a lack of consensus over the allotment of seats across states baring chinks in the Opposition armour, senior Congress leader Mukul Wasnik on Friday asserted that all partners in the INDIA bloc were together and will fight the upcoming Lok Sabha elections ‘together’.

“While we have already announced seat-sharing deals with our partners in some states, discussions on similar arrangements in other states are in their final stages. We will contest some seats in other states, setting aside the rest for our allies. However, we will contest the upcoming elections together,” Wasnik said.

Notably, earlier this week, Congress general secretary in charge of Communications, Jairam Ramesh, said the party has finalised seat-sharing deals with INDIA partners in all states barring West Bengal and Jammu and Kashmir.

“Now out of 28 parties, 26 parties are with us and one or two more parties may join us in Maharashtra. We are strong and our seat-sharing formula in Jammu and Kashmir is being finalised. There has been some delay (referring to the seat sharing issue) in West Bengal but the Congress Party has finalised the seat sharing with all the other parties. Only two states left are West Bengal and Jammu and Kashmir,” he said.

The Lok Sabha elections are likely to be held sometime between April and May this year. (ANI)

Rajnath exudes confidence in party win ahead of LS polls

The Defence Minister expressed gratitude for the warm welcome from the Lucknow Lok Sabha constituency…reports Asian Lite News

Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh exuded confidence on Saturday that the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) will secure a third term with a commanding majority and said that all factors are in favour of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Speaking to the media on Saturday, Rajnath Singh said, “Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) will come to power again. All the factors are in favour of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.”

The Defence Minister also expressed gratitude for the warm welcome from the Lucknow Lok Sabha constituency and said, “Lucknow is my Lok Sabha constituency and I visit here regularly. I have received a lot of love from the people here.”

As the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) seeks a third term in office, Union Minister Rajnath Singh asserted on Saturday that the BJP government, if elected to power, will not let even a single person in the country stay below the poverty line.

The Defence Minister was addressing the ‘Kisan Mahakumbh’ in Chhattisgarh’s Raipur.”I assure you that, under the leadership of Vishnu Deo Saiji, Chhattisgarh will develop. You must have observed that when Vishnu Deo Saiji assumed the reins of the government, the development came back on track,” he said.

Rajnath Singh further highlighted that the country has entered a new era.”When the country says something, the world is all ears. Many heads of state believe that this century belongs to India,” he said.

Throwing a jibe at the previous Congress government at the centre, Singh said, “There have been allegations of corruption during the Congress government, but there hasn’t been a single stain of corruption on the government’s side under the leadership of Modiji.”

The ‘farm factor’ plays a significant role in Chhattisgarh, given that around 70% of the total population of the state is engaged in agriculture.Meanwhile, as the Lok Sabha polls draw near, the BJP and the Congress have released their first candidate lists with 195 and 39 names, respectively.

The Lok Sabha polls are slated to be held in April-May this year. (ANI)

UP Cong recommends Rahul, Priyanka for Amethi, Rae Bareli

The Uttar Pradesh Congress Pradesh Election Committee (UPPEC), which is scheduled to meet here on Sunday, will unanimously recommend the names of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Rahul Gandhi as the party candidates for the Rae Bareli and Amethi Lok Sabha seats.

Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee (UPCC) President Ajay Rai said, “The UPPEC will meet on Sunday. We will recommend names for all the seats. The choice of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Rahul Gandhi will, however, be unanimous. There will be no discussion on their names and the two leaders will be requested to contest the poll from Rae Bareli and Amethi.”

Deepak Singh, former Congress MLC and senior party leader from Amethi, said the district and state party units have already passed resolutions, urging the two leaders to contest from Rae Bareli and Amethi.

“We will again request Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Rahul Gandhi to contest the election from Rae Bareli and Amethi respectively,” said Singh, who is also a UPPEC member.

Uttar Pradesh Congress General Secretary Anil Yadav and UPCC Spokesman Manish Hindavi said UPPEC, headed by the UPCC President Ajay Rai, has 39 members, including Congress Legislature Party leader Aradhana Mishra ‘Mona’.

The Congress and the Samajwadi Party (SP) have reached a seat-sharing agreement for 2024 polls that gives 17 seats to the Congress and 63 seats to the SP. The UPPEC will, however, shortlist names of party candidates for other seats.

Thrissur set to witness a triangular fight

All three main political parties have named their candidates and the election campaigns are also underway….reports Asian Lite News

Thrissur, the cultural capital of Kerala, will witness a triangular fight between CPI-M, Congress and BJP in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.

Although the poll dates have not been announced, however, all three main political parties have named their candidates and the election campaigns are also underway.

The ruling Left has named the former Agriculture Minister V.S. Sunilkumar; the BJP has named the popular actor Suresh Gopi; while the Congress has decided on K. Muraleedharan, who is the sitting member from the Badagara Lok Sabha constituency in Kozhikode district.

The sitting Thrissur MP of the Congress T.N. Prathapan won the 2019 polls with 93,633 votes defeating CPI leader Rajaji Mathew Thomas.

In 2019, the BJP managed to finish in second place in Thiruvananthapuram out of the 20 Lok Sabha seats in the state.

In January this year, Prime Minister Modi kick-started the campaign of Gopi in Thrissur and also addressed an all-women gathering.

Muraleedharan said that he is pleased to return to his hometown where he was born and his campaign will begin after visiting his house in Thrissur where his parents live.

“CPI-M and the BJP are hand-in-glove. Whatever happens, the Congress at no cost will allow the BJP to win in Kerala. Nemom assembly constituency is the best example. The BJP lost their only sitting seat in the Kerala Assembly which they won in 2016,” said Muraleedharan.

Muraleedharan, though he finished third, garnered sizeable votes pushing the BJP candidate to second place, making the incumbent State Education Minister V. Sivankutty win the Nemom seat.

With a very strong Catholic Christian community in Thrissur, Gopi appears confident and has tried his best to make inroads into the powerful domain of Catholic priests.

Sunilkumar, however, sits comfortably as all the seven assembly constituencies — that make up the Thrissur Lok Sabha constituency — (four CPI-M and three CPI) are held by the ruling Left.

With Sunilkumar and Gopi already hitting the campaign trail and Muraleedharan beginning his on Saturday, Thrissur is set to witness what perhaps will be one of the most keenly contested triangular-fights in Kerala.

BJP is irrelevant in Thiruvananthapuram, says Raveendran

Pannyan Raveendran, Left Democratic Front’s Lok Sabha candidate from the Thiruvananthapuram constituency, said that the main fight in the constituency is between the LDF and the Congress-led UDF.

“The main contest is between LDF and UDF. BJP is irrelevant in Thiruvananthapuram,” Pannyan Raveendran who won the constituency in 2005 told ANI.

Many observers belive that it will be a three-cornered fight in the Thiruvananthapuram constituency in the upcoming Lok Sabha election with Congress, BJP, and CPI fielding strong candidates.

Congress’s Shashi Tharoor won the constituency in the last three elections consecutively.

Union Minister Rajeev Chandraskhekar has been fielded against Congress MP Shashi Tharoor from Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram, which is being considered significant as BJP in the Lok Sabha polls in 2019 drew a blank in Kerala.

Soon after the BJP’s announcement of his candidature from Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram constituency for the Lok Sabha polls, Union Minister Rajeev Chandrashekhar on Saturday said that he was honoured and happy.

“I’m very honoured and excited. After 18 years of public life and serving in Rajya Sabha, this is the first opportunity that I have got to contest in the Lok Sabha. The Prime Minister, the Home Minister and our party president have chosen to field me as their candidate in the capital of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram the state I belong to, the state my family belongs to,” Chandrashekhar told ANI.

“This is the campaign I look forward to, the campaign I will start very shortly. I will confront the vital issues of the people of Trivandrum,” he added.

Pannyan Raveendran also feels that the BJP-ruled Central government’s “withholding” of funds to Kerala will have a negative consequence for the BJP.

” The Centre financially squeezes Kerala by withholding funds and imposing economic sanctions. It is highly detrimental to Kerala. The Centre treats Kerala as an enemy country,” Raveendran said.

Congress, however, is not taking a stand against this Centre’s “injustice” to the state, he alleged.

He also criticized Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for contesting again from Wayanad where the main fight is between the Left and Congress, both the constituents of the opposition INDIA alliance.

“Rahul Gandhi came back to Wayanad because he couldn’t find any other constituency where he could be sure of winning. Rahul Gandhi has these kinds of immature approaches to many things,” he said.

“Congress is contesting in 17 seats in Uttar Pradesh. But Rahul Gandhi, who seemed to have gained some political strength after his Bharat Jodo Yatra, is now returning to Wayanad to contest,” Raveendran said.

He also said that senior Congress leader and former Chief Minister K Karunakaran’s daughter Padmaja Venugopal’s joining the BJP has no political consequence.

“The arrival of Padmaja Venugopal does not benefit the BJP. BJP does not get a single seat in Kerala,” Raveendran said. (ANI)

Sharad Pawar, the Nationalist Congress Party (SP) leader, declared his daughter and MP Supriya Sule as their candidate for Maharashtra’s Baramati Lok Sabha seat on Saturday.

The announcement was made by Pawar during a rally organized in Bhor taluka of Pune district.

During his speech, the NCP (SP) leader Sharad Pawar said, “The Election Commission (EC) is likely to declare the Lok Sabha elections on March 14 or March 15. These elections will decide the future of our country. Nobody was ever worried about the future of our nation, but now change is needed.”

He also added, “PM Modi doesn’t pay attention towards farmer’s suicide instead he is focused on only Gujarat.”

Taking a jibe at Modi’s Guarantee, Pawar said, “PM talks of ‘Modi Ki Guarantee’ but what guarantee is he giving us? Neither black money was brought back, farmers are on strike, inflation and unemployment are serious problems in our country.”

Further, Pawar, seeking votes for her daughter, appealed to put their votes over the new election symbol provided to the party and listed Sule’s achievements as an MP.

“If you think the situation should be in control, now is the time when you will go for election, press the button of “Tutari” (symbol of NCP SP party). Today, I declare Supriya Sule as a candidate for Baramati Lok Sabha constituency. The rally was organized by the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) in Bhor taluka of Pune district. During the rally, ShivSena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) MP Sanjay Raut, MP Supriya Sule, and Balasaheb Thorat from Congress were present. (ANI)

He has also worked as Secretary, Ministry of Culture; Vice-Chairman, Delhi Development Authority; Additional Secretary and Financial Advisor, Ministry of Labour and Employment; Joint Secretary, Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance.

‘Govt doesn’t want free and fair election’

Meanwhile, Congress General Secretary, KC Venugopal, expressed shock over the abrupt resignation of the Election Commissioner ahead of the Lok Sabha polls, saying that the entire nation is anxious about the upcoming elections. He also said that the government doesn’t want a “free and fair election.”

“This is quite shocking; just before the declaration of elections, the Election Commissioner has resigned. Now, only one Election Commissioner is there… What is happening in this Election Commission? The entire country is anxious. The government of India doesn’t want a free and fair election,” said Venugopal said.

“Earlier, they removed the Chief Justice of India from the selection body of the Election Commission and Election Commissioner. In place of CJI, they included a cabinet minister… now it has become a government affair… transparency has been lost in this process,” he added.

Arun Goel assumed charge as Election Commissioner (EC) of India on November 21, 2022. He has also worked as Secretary, Ministry of Culture; Vice-Chairman, Delhi Development Authority; Additional Secretary and Financial Advisor, Ministry of Labour and Employment; and Joint Secretary, Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance. The Lok Sabha polls are slated to be held in April-May this year.

Earlier in the day, Venugopal raised concerns over Election Commissioner Goel’s resignation, stating, ” It is deeply concerning for the health of the world’s largest democracy that Election Commissioner Arun Goel has resigned on the cusp of the Lok Sabha elections.”

“There is absolutely no transparency in how a constitutional institution like the ECI has been functioning and the manner in which the government pressurises them,” the Congress leader said in a post on ‘X’.

Attacking the BJP-led government, KC Venugopal said, “During the 2019 elections, Mr. Ashok Lavasa had dissented against a clean chit to the PM for violating the Model Code of Conduct. Later, he faced relentless inquiries. This attitude shows the regime is hell-bent on destroying democratic traditions.”
