Kaur Sets Expectations for India-England Women’s Test

Though the 34-year-old off-spinner reckoned that spinners would not get a lot of assistance from the pitch, she said India had experienced bowlers who know how to gain advantage from such a surface…reports Asian Lite News

With skipper Harmanpreet Kaur declaring the pitch as ‘skiddy’, focus will be on the bowlers when India takes on England in the four-day one-off Women’s Test at the DY Patil Stadium here from Thursday.

While Harmanpreet reckoned that the pitch would not spin a lot and would rather help the pacers, England skipper Heather Knight concurred that would be a flat and skiddy pitch and said they are considering going into the Test with an extra bowler.

“When I last saw the pitch, they were going to shave it more. It might not turn more and will be skiddy even for the spinners. The spells from medium pacers will be very important,” said Harman in the pre-match press conference on Wednesday.

Though the 34-year-old off-spinner reckoned that spinners would not get a lot of assistance from the pitch, she said India had experienced bowlers who know how to gain advantage from such a surface.

“We have spinners who have experience in bowling on flat, skiddy surfaces. If we bowl positively and go with aggressive field placements, we can pick up wickets. As a batter, if you can get set, it will ease out but at the same time, if you attack with the ball it won’t be easy,” said the 34-year-old Harmanpreet who has the best figures by an Indian bowler at home as she had claimed 9/85 in two innings against South Africa when India last hosted a women’s Test in 2014.

Heather Knight expects the wicket to skid and also help the spinners. Said though the surface and conditions will have a bearing on the playing XI though they would like to go in with their best possible side.

“we’re certainly excited to face the challenge and see how the pitch plays and what it’s like playing Test Cricket in India,” said the England skipper.

Harmanpreet said the wicket will not have much bearing on their final combination. She expects that would be enough for everyone in the pitch at the DY Patil Stadium.

“It is a four-day game, so even if you have to bowl for two days, you have to look at who can bowl for two days and who are those batters who can bat for long. We have to make combinations accordingly.

“If we look at the pitch and decide the combination, it will be different but if we look at our strengths, it will be a different combination. I would like to go with our strengths,” the India skipper said.

Though India will be playing the first Test match without the towering Jhulan Goswami running in and letting the ball rip, Harmanpreet has some very good bowlers at her disposal, though they are short on experience in red-ball cricket.

Pacers Pooja Vastrakar and Meghna Singh were part of the playing XI in India’s last Test against Australia at Carrara while either Renuka Singh Thakur or Titas Sadhu will make their debut if India decides to go with a three-pronged pace attack.

Deepti Sharma and Sneha Rana are the two most experienced off-spinners besides Harmanpreet in the squad while in Rajeshwari Gayakwad, India has one of the world’s best left-arm spinners who has played all three formats.

On their part England have one of the most experienced Test players in Heather Knight, who has scored 750 runs at an average of 48.90 in 10 matches while Tammy Beaumont is coming into Thursday’s match with a double-century in the last match.

They have good spinners in Charlie Dean (off-spinner) and left-armers Sophie Ecclestone and Kirstie Gordon. In Kate Cross, they have an experienced pacer who has taken 24 wickets so far.

India does have an edge in recent form as they have won three and drawn two of their last five matches while England have four draws and a loss in the last five.

However, India’s five Test matches are spread from 2005 to 2021 while England’s have come between 2019 and 2023.

Suryakumar Yadav Dominates as No.1 Batsman

Suryakumar claimed the premier ranking during the most recent edition of the T20 World Cup in Australia towards the end of last year…reports Asian Lite News

India batter Suryakumar Yadav solidified his position at the top of the ICC Men’s T20I rankings following his quickfire half-century in the second match of his side’s T20I series against South Africa.

Suryakumar smashed 56 from 36 deliveries to gain a total of 10 rating points to further extend his lead as the No.1 ranked batter in the shortest format of the game.

As per the latest ICC T20I rankings update on Wednesday, Suryakumar sits comfortably on top with 865 ratings points, which is well clear of his nearest rivals in Pakistan’s Mohammad Rizwan (787 rating points) and South Africa’s Aiden Markram (758) less than six months out from the start of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

Suryakumar claimed the premier ranking during the most recent edition of the T20 World Cup in Australia towards the end of last year.

In other movements following the match, Rinku Singh’s star continues to rise as he rocketed 46 slots to 59th among the batters, following his dazzling and unbeaten 68 from just 39 balls, which lifted him to career-best 464 rating points.

South Africa opener Reeza Hendricks is one player to make ground on Suryakumar after he moved up one place to eighth following his innings of 49 against India while India’s Tilak Varma moved up 10 spots to be placed 55th.

In the bowler’s list, newly-crowned No.1 T20I bowler India’s Ravi Bishnoi, who missed out on selection for the South Africa tour, paved the way for Afghanistan ace Rashid Khan to join the India young gun at the top of the rankings for T20I bowlers, with Proteas spinner Tabraiz Shamsi became the eighth spinner in the top 10 of the list when he hopped two places from 12th, moving to 654 points.

India left-armer Kuldeep Yadav rises five places to 32nd on the same list, while Markram improves two places to second behind only India’s Ravindra Jadeja on the latest T20I rankings for all-rounders.

West Indies Triumph Over England in T20 Clash

Russell was deservedly named Player of the Match for his superb individual heroics and admitted after the game that his return to international cricket had gone exactly to plan…reports Asian Lite News

Star all-rounder Andre Russell made a successful return to international cricket as the West Indies showed they could be a force to be reckoned with at next year’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup with an impressive four-wicket victory over England, here.

It was Russell’s first international match in more than two years and the talented 35-year-old turned it on in style with a three-wicket haul and an unbeaten 29* from 14 balls as the Caribbean side chased down England’s decent total of 171 with 11 deliveries remaining.

The run chase was the highest successful one at the picturesque Kensington Oval ground in Barbados, surpassing the previous best of 155/5 by the West Indies also against England in 2014.

Russell was deservedly named Player of the Match for his superb individual heroics and admitted after the game that his return to international cricket had gone exactly to plan.

“For two weeks now since I got the call up I have been dreaming that my first match back I would be Player of the Match,” Russell was quoted as saying by ICC after the match.

“I didn’t know how it would happen, but I just kept believing that it would happen.”

Russell said the knowledge he has from playing previously in Barbados helped him put the clamps on England and pick up a trio of valuable wickets.

“Cutters seem to work well here so I tried to bowl as many cutters and take the pace off, as most of the boundaries hit early in England’s innings were from pace on,” Russell noted.

“We pulled it back very well and well bowled to everyone tonight.” The performance will provide the West Indies with plenty of confidence less than six months out from the start of the T20 World Cup that they will co-host with the USA, with a host of their best players appearing in good form against England. Russell helped turn the momentum the way of the West Indies after Phil Salt (40) and Jos Buttler (39) had given England a good start by putting on 77 for the opening wicket in good time, with Alzarri Joseph (3/54) chipping in with a three-wicket haul of his own as the visitors were dismissed in their final over.

Shai Hope (36) and Kyle Mayers (35) found the middle of the bat with ease in response for the West Indies, before a brief rain delay and some inspired bowling from Rehan Ahmed (3/39) provided England with a glimmer of hope. But Russell combined with Rovman Powell (31*) to guide the West Indies to the highest successful T20I run chase at the ground and help setup a 1-0 lead in the five-match series. The teams meet next in Grenada on Thursday.

Charlie Dean Shines in England’s T20I Victory

Nat Sciver-Brunt and Alice Capsey contributed to the chase with a combined total of 41, as England reached home in 11.2 overs, though they lost six wickets on the way…reports Asian Lite News

After taking the Player of the Match award in England’s four-wicket win over India in second T20I, off-spinner Charlie Dean said there were no real demons in the pitch at Wankhede Stadium, though she was told by her team-mates that the ball was skidding on.

Charlie missed the T20I series opener due to a stomach bug but on her return to the team for Saturday’s match, she opened the bowling with the new ball. Charlie bowled a quality spell of 2-16 and took out India openers Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana to set the base for the visitors’ bowling out the hosts’ for just 80, with all England bowlers amongst the wickets.   “There were quite a lot of wickets today in the game. I wouldn’t have any complaints on the pitch myself. Of course I wouldn’t, I’m a bowler, I didn’t get a chance to have a bat out there but that’s good. A lot of our guys were saying it’s skidding on a bit but no real demons in the pitch.”

“I guess just pressures and weaknesses in certain areas. We executed our plans really well and so did India, to be fair they set really aggressive fields. They had to because of the way that game was dictated,” said Charlie after the match ended.   In reply, fast-bowler Renuka Singh Thakur again struck early by taking out England openers Danni Wyatt and Sophia Dunkley.

Nat Sciver-Brunt and Alice Capsey contributed to the chase with a combined total of 41, as England reached home in 11.2 overs, though they lost six wickets on the way.   “I guess (it is) just (due to) pressures and weaknesses in certain areas. All around, the bowlers had a really good day. We executed our plans well, so did India, they set really aggressive fields and they had to because of the way the game was dictated.”   ”It played really well into their hands, taking away boundaries and putting extra catchers in place paid off on that kind of a wicket,” concluded Charlie.

Sreenidi Deccan Secures a 1-0 Victory Over Delhi FC

Sreenidi took better control of the game in the second half, dominating play and also locking Delhi’s main enforcer Joseba Beitia out of the game…reports Asian Lite News

Sreenidi Deccan finally broke their winless form with a tight 1-0 victory over Delhi FC in their I-league 2023-24 fixture at the Deccan Arena here on Monday. Gagandeep Bali scored the own goal in the 65th minute as the win took the home side to 20 points from 10 matches.

Mohammedan Sporting are on top of the points table with 20 points, but they have played two matches less than Sreenidi.

In a goalless first half, both teams strived to gain control of proceedings and thus most of the play was conducted in the middle of the pitch. A lack of finesse in the final third meant neither team was able to create even a notional half-chance.

The closest either team came was when an errant pass from Delhi FC goalkeeper Naveen Kumar landed right at the feet of Rilwan Hassan merely yards away from him. The Sreenidi forward was caught as unaware as anyone else, and before he could even control the ball, it had bounced away safely back into Naveen’s gloves.

Sreenidi took better control of the game in the second half, dominating play and also locking Delhi’s main enforcer Joseba Beitia out of the game.

Hassan had another chance to open the scoring when having collected a cleared header from a throw-in, shaped in perfectly to shoot at goal from inside the box. His effort drifted just wide. A flurry of chances followed for Sreenidi but a lack of composure in front of goal let them down.

It was fortuitous then that when the goal did come it came off a brilliant diving header, albeit by a Delhi defender into his own net. Hassan again at the centre of the action, picked the ball up on the left wing, cut in, and let fly a cross, towards the near post.

A backtracking Gagandeep Bali, unsure about his position or the players behind him, dived in to head the ball to what he presumed was safety. It went perfectly into the net.

With the lead secured Sreenidi started playing the safe game, happy to deny Delhi possession, slow the game down, and pick up fouls in key areas.

Sergio Barboza Jr almost made them pay for it in injury time, latching on to a brilliantly delivered free kick from Pape Gassama inside the six-yard box. To Sreenidi’s relief, his header flew high.

Odisha FC Clinches Historic 1-0 Victory Over Bashundhara Kings

Jahouh got a chance in the 92nd minute of the game, where he could easily seal the game in Odisha FC’s favor, but his attempt missed the target by inches…reports Asian Lite News

Odisha FC beat ten-man Bashundhara Kings 1-0 at the Kalinga stadium to advance to the Inter-Zone Semi-Final Playoff for the first time in their history.

Mourtada Fall’s 61st minute header secured victory for Odisha after Asror Gafurov’s sending off in first half injury time, with the win taking Odisha onto 12 points to see them leapfrog the side from Bangladesh and finish the group phase in pole position.

It was end-to-end stuff as Odisha FC started the game on a positive note, creating numerous chances throughout the right flank with Cy Goddard, Amey Ranawade, and Diego Mauricio.

Carlos Delgado missed the first real goal-scoring opportunity in the 28th minute when he missed the free header inside the box. The visitors also got their chance in the first half, but Miguel Figueira failed to use the dangerous set-piece just behind Odisha FC’s box when his left-footed shot went far away from Amrinder Singh.

The decisive moment took place when Asror Gafurov made a nasty challenge on Jahouh’s ankle in the additional minutes of the first half, which showed him a direct red card, causing his side to play with a man short.

The scoreline was at the level at halftime, but Odisha FC managed to break the deadlock in the 61st minute, edging past Bashundhara Kings’ 18-year-old goalkeeper Mehedi Hasan Srabon.

Ahmed Jahouh was pivotal again with his creative spark and sheer control of the game, which helped the hosts dominate the game. He was brilliant in corners, making numerous crossings that rattled the opponent’s defense several times.

Jahouh got a chance in the 92nd minute of the game, where he could easily seal the game in Odisha FC’s favor, but his attempt missed the target by inches.

In the second half, the biggest chance for the visitor came in the 55th minute, when their Brazilian striker Dori wasted an open chance as he failed to beat Amrinder in a one-on-one situation.

The Bangladeshi side got their final chance in the dying moments of the game, just before the final whistle, when Robinho’s free-kick went far away from the goalpost.

Odisha FC have showcased their character in every possible way, as they made a remarkable comeback in the group stage matches by winning the last four consecutive matches that amended their two opening match defeats.

Monday night’s result has been the biggest success for Odisha FC in continental events. The Juggernauts will now proceed to the AFC Cup Inter-Zone Semi-Final Playoff, being the only Indian team to be qualified.

Liverpool Tops Premier League Table with Salah’s 150th Goal

At half-time both managers made changes as Liverpool replaced Endo with Joe Gomez and Palace replaced Edouard with Jean-Philippe Mateta…reports Asian Lite News

Mohammad Salah’s 150th Premier League goal and substitute Harvey Elliott’s stoppage-time strike earn Liverpool a 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace, climbing to the top of the table.

It was the fifth time Liverpool had come from behind to win this season, extending their unbeaten record against Palace to 13 Premier League games.

The first half was a cagey affair on Saturday. Liverpool struggled to break down a resolute Palace team, whose 53 passes completed was their joint-lowest such total for an opening half in 20 years, Premier League reports.

The only shot on target came from Palace in the 27th minute. Jordan Ayew drove down the right and whipped in a cross that found Jefferson Lerma at the back post, but the midfielder’s shot was brilliantly saved by Alisson before the ball hit the post and was cleared.

Two minutes later, Palace were awarded a penalty after Wataru Endo was robbed of the ball and Virgil van Dijk brought down Odsonne Edouard who was through on goal. But the spot-kick was overturned after a VAR review found that Hughes had fouled Endo in the build-up.

At half-time both managers made changes as Liverpool replaced Endo with Joe Gomez and Palace replaced Edouard with Jean-Philippe Mateta.

Mateta got straight into the action, winning a penalty after being fouled by Jarell Quansah, who was making only his second start. The decision to award the spot-kick came after a VAR review one minute 45 seconds after the foul. He then stepped up and sent Alisson the wrong way to give Palace the lead on 57 minutes. In the 74th minute, Ayew was sent off for a second yellow after fouling Elliott on the counter-attack.

Liverpool equalised 98 seconds later. Cody Gakpo’s cross led to a scramble in the box and the ball fell kindly to Salah, who scored with a deflected shot. It was his 200th goal in a Liverpool shirt and his 150th in the Premier League, entering him into the top 10 goalscorers list, alongside Michael Owen.

Ten seconds into 10 minutes of added time Elliott gave the Reds the lead. Salah laid off the ball to the substitute who drove forward and released a powerful shot beating substitute ‘keeper Remi Matthews.

Palace applied some late pressure but were unable to stop Liverpool increasing their points won from losing positions to 18, sending them top with 37 points. Palace remain 14th on 16 points.

Shami Tops ICC Player of the Month Nominations

Shammi bagged 15 wickets at an average of 12.06 with an economy rate of 5.68. Overall, he finished as the leading wicket-taker of the 2023 Cricket World Cup, with 24 wickets to his name from merely seven innings…reports Asian Lite News

India pacer Mohammed Shami, who ended the recently concluded ICC World Cup as the leading wicket-taker of the tournament, has been nominated for the ICC Men’s Player of the Month Award for November 2023 along with Australia’s batting sensation Travis Head and all-rounder Glenn Maxwell.

“Two ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 champions and an Indian fast-bowling veteran have made the shortlist for the ICC Men’s Player of the Month Award for November 2023,” the International Cricket Council (ICC) said in a statement.

Shami continued his golden run in the World Cup into November. He bagged 15 wickets at an average of 12.06 with an economy rate of 5.68. Overall, he finished as the leading wicket-taker of the 2023 Cricket World Cup, with 24 wickets to his name from merely seven innings.

Among his highlight efforts this month was a stunning 5/18 against Sri Lanka at Wankhede. Already under pressure in a 358-run chase, Shami’s arrival at the end of the first Powerplay spelt the end for Sri Lanka. In his five overs, he batted through their middle and lower order.

A focused 2/18 aided in the demolishment of South Africa at Eden Gardens. The quick bowler, however, shone in the semi-final against New Zealand.

Australia’s batting sensation Head returned to the squad after a long injury layoff at the end of October with a spectacular century against New Zealand and continued his good vein of form throughout November.

In November, he scored 220 runs in five One-Day Internationals at a remarkable average of 44, including a half-century and a century. Notable were his efforts in the Cricket World Cup semi-final and final, where he was named Player of the Match and played a key role in Australia’s sixth title.

Meanwhile, Australia’s star all-rounder Maxwell gathered 204 runs at an average of 204 with a strike rate of 152.23 in his three ODI outings last month, along with two wickets. In two T20Is in the series against India, he amassed an impressive 116 runs at a stunning strike rate of 207.14.

A golfing mishap had led to Maxwell’s absence from Australia’s match against England at the Cricket World Cup at the beginning of the month, but the all-rounder returned in style against Afghanistan.

His double hundred was the first by an Australian in Men’s One-Day Internationals and the second-fastest ever. It was also the first time a chaser scored a double century. This was also the highest score from someone ranked sixth or lower.

He later appeared in the T20I series against India, and his century in the third T20I in Guwahati helped Australia win. His 104* came off just 48 balls, with eight fours and eight sixes. It aided in the pursuit of India’s 223. (ANI)
