Wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan and stylish batter Suryakumar Yadav were on Friday named in the Indian Test squad for the first two games against Australia, beginning on February 9.

Rishabh Pant, who is recovering from an accident, will miss the series and his absence paved the way for Ishan’s inclusion in the 17-member squad that also has KS Bharat as the other wicketkeeper.

Kishan, who made his first-class debut in 2014, has scored 2985 runs at an average of 38.76 in 48 first-class matches while Bharat has also done well in the domestic cricket and also impressed with this performance during a practice match on England tour.

Meanwhile, Suryakumar, who has been in brillant form in T20Is for India, has also been included. He made his first-class debut way back in December 2010 and has 5549 runs in that format at an average of 44.79.

Fast bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, who has been out of action since September last year due to a back injury, will also miss out from the Border-Gavaskar series. In his absence, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Umesh Yadav and Jaydev Unadkat form the core of the pace bowling department.

Allrounder Ravindra Jadeja, is set to make a comeback after injury but his availability will be subject to fitness. R. Ashwin, Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav are the other spinners in the squad.

Rohit Sharma, who missed the Test series in Bangladesh due to a thumb injury, also returns to captain the side. KL Rahul, who led the side in his absence in Bangladesh, will be his deputy.

2nd ODI: Calm Rahul guides India to hard-fought win over Lanka

Rahul joined forces with Hardik to get India’s chase back on track. After India’s 100 was achieved, the duo began to punish loose deliveries from the Sri Lankan bowlers…reports Asian Lite News

Wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul stepped up when it mattered the most to pull India out of a tricky stage by slamming his 12th ODI fifty and carried them to a hard-fought four-wicket victory over Sri Lanka in the second ODI at Eden Gardens, here on Thursday.

After Kuldeep Yadav and Mohammed Siraj picked three wickets each to bundle out Sri Lanka for 215, the visitors’ bowlers reduced India to 86/4. But Rahul kept his calm and batted sensibly under pressure to make an unbeaten 64 off 103 balls, and struck a crucial 75-run partnership with Hardik Pandya to take India over the line with 40 balls to spare, giving the hosts’ an unassailable 2-0 series lead.

Chasing 216, Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill smacked six boundaries in the first four overs. But the duo fell in the span of four balls — Rohit nicked behind off Chamika Karunaratne without any footwork while Gill picked out short midwicket off Lahiru Kumara through a short-arm pull.

Kumara inflicted more damage by getting a length ball to come in sharply and Virat Kohli, stuck in the crease, got an inside edge to the stumps, as India’s top three fell in power-play. Shreyas Iyer pulled with conviction and was lucky in getting boundaries off leading edges. But he played the wrong line off Kumara and was trapped lbw. He took a review, but replays showed ball clipping leg-stump.

Rahul joined forces with Hardik to get India’s chase back on track. The duo took their time to weather the early storm. After India’s 100 was achieved, the duo began to punish loose deliveries from the Sri Lankan bowlers.

When Rajitha bowled too full and sprayed down leg, Hardik was quick in driving through mid-off and flicking through backward square leg for boundaries. When Hasaranga overpitched, Rahul leant forward to drive through cover for four. In the next over, Kumara overpitched and Rahul lofted over mid-off for another four.

As the ball started to lose shine, India began to cruise. Hardik brought out a front foot drive against Dhananjaya de Silva, the sixth bowling option and then flicked off Karunaratne for another four. But in an attempt to drive again off Karunaratne, Hardik was stuck at crease and nicked behind to keeper.

Axar Patel began well with an uppish drive through vacant extra cover gap off Karunaratne for a boundary which was called no-ball. He made full use of the free hit by fiercely pulling over deep mid-wicket and put the pressure back on Sri Lanka.

His attempt to take the aerial route backfired when his lofted extra drive was caught by long-off against de Silva. After Rahul got his fifty in 93 balls on a no-ball, Kuldeep brought out a fierce cut through backward point for a boundary.

Rahul took India closer to win with flicks and inside edges fetching him boundaries off Rajitha, followed by a top-edge on pull flying over keeper’s head to make it three fours in an over. Kuldeep finished off the chase with a four slapped through mid-off to give India series win.

Earlier, Siraj overcame a wayward start to pick 3/30 in 5.4 overs, while Kuldeep was excellent in the middle overs to take 3/51 in his ten overs. Umran Malik shined with 2/48 in seven overs while Axar Patel was miserly in his 1/16 off five overs.

Sri Lanka were going good, including debutant Nuwanidu Fernando getting a fifty on debut and stitching a 73-run partnership with Kusal Mendis. But the introduction of spin from the 17th over saw them implode from 102/2 to 126/6. It took some lofty hitting from Wanindu Hasaranga, Dunith Wellalage and Kasun Rajith to take Sri Lanka over 200.

India found early movement through Siraj and Mohammed Shami. While Shami operated with nagging line and length, Siraj was a bit wayward as Avishka Fernando hit him for a hat-trick of boundaries.

But Siraj had the last laugh, getting a wobble-seam delivery to nip back in and take Fernando’s inside edge to crash into the stumps. Nuwanidu, getting off the mark after ten deliveries, started to be more comfortable and looked compact in his punches, drives and upper-cutting over the slip cordon.

Mendis was quick in dispatching anything overpitched, too short and down leg for boundaries. His stay came to an end when Kuldeep trapped him lbw with a googly spinning past outside edge and hitting high on back leg. Mendis reviewed, but couldn’t change the on-field decision.

More trouble followed Sri Lanka as Axar sneaked through the gate of de Silva and brushed the pad before ricocheting into middle and off stump and Nuwanidu, after reaching his fifty, was run out after a horrible mix-up.

Kuldeep’s good day continued when he uprooted the leg-stump of captain Dasun Shanaka and then got a good dip on a googly to Charith Asalanka for completing a soft caught and bowled dismissal.

Hasaranga took on Kuldeep by hitting three fours and a six, but he failed to keep a short of length ball down off Umran and gave a catch to backward point. Karunaratne hit Umran for three fours, but couldn’t keep a punch down off him and fell in similar fashion.

Wellalage swept, hooked and steered well in his 34-ball 32, before punching straight to backward point off Siraj, who ended the innings by castling Kumara with a fast, straight delivery.

Brief Scores: Sri Lanka 215 all out in 39.4 overs (Nuwanidu Fernando 50, Kusal Mendis 34, Mohammed Siraj 3/30, Kuldeep Yadav 3/51) lost to India 219/6 in 43.2 overs (KL Rahul 64 not out, Hardik Pandya 36; Chamika Karunaratne 2/51, Lahiru Kumara 2/64) by four wickets

Suryakumar closes in on all-time ICC T20I batting rankings

Unsurprisingly, he was the Player of the Match as India put on a colossal total of 228/5 and went on to register a massive 91-run win…reports Asian Lite News

Star India batter Suryakumar Yadav, who is making a habit out of breaking records, is inching closer towards the all-time ICC men’s T20I batting rankings, extending his lead on top of the table from 883 rating points to 908 in the latest update on Wednesday.

Following up his 36-ball 51 in the second T20I, Surya blasted a majestic century — his third in six months — in the series decider in Rajkot recently. The 51-ball 112 not out was laced with seven fours and nine sixes, not sparing an inch of the stadium with his sublime 360-degree hitting.

Unsurprisingly, he was the Player of the Match as India put on a colossal total of 228/5 and went on to register a massive 91-run win.

His stunning returns in both games puts him second in the all-time T20I batters bankings, just seven rating points behind England’s Dawid Malan (915). Suryakumar was placed fifth in the all-time list during the previous update of the rankings but has now leapfrogged Babar Azam (896), Virat Kohli (897) and Aaron Finch (900) over the last week, as per ICC.

The right-hander batter had to wait for a long time for the India cap, making his T20I debut after turning 30. But there has been no stopping him ever since as he has gone to rack up runs consistently at a rate not seen before. In 45 T20Is, Surya has accumulated 1578 runs at a phenomenal strike rate of 180.34, the highest for any batter with more than 250 T20I runs.

In the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022, he finished as the third-highest run-getter with 239 runs in six matches while striking at an eye-watering 189.68.

All three of his fifties — against South Africa, Zimbabwe and Netherlands — proved to be crucial knocks under the circumstances and in the case of the latter two, turned the tide in favour of India.

Suryakumar will not have to wait for too long to gun for Malan’s record as New Zealand are set to travel to India for a white ball tour consisting of three ODIs and three T20Is later this month. The T20I series will kick off on January 27 in Ranchi and good returns against the fifth-placed Kiwis could see Surya break yet another record, something he has made a habit of.

Golden Globe 2023: Here are the big winners

‘The Banshees of Inisherin,’ a comic look at the dissolution of a friendship, won a leading three prizes, including awards for its screenplay and the lead performance of Colin Farrell…reports Asian Lite News

The song ‘Naatu Naatu’ from the Indian film ‘RRR’ directed by S.S. Rajamouli was named the Best Original Song in Motion Picture, ‘The Fabelmans’ won Best Picture, Drama and ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’ bagged the Best Picture, Musical or Comedy at the Golden Globes Awards.

‘House of the Dragon’ won best TV drama and ‘Abbott Elementary’ received the prize for best TV comedy. In a marathon telecast that stretched over three hours, ‘The White Lotus’, was named best limited or anthology series for its Sicily-set second season.

Their victories came as the tarnished awards show attempted to relaunch itself as a star-studded celebration of movies and television after being forced off the air in 2022 in the wake of a series of controversies, reports ‘Variety’.

‘The Banshees of Inisherin,’ a comic look at the dissolution of a friendship, won a leading three prizes, including awards for its screenplay and the lead performance of Colin Farrell.

‘The Fabelmans’, a warm-hearted look at Steven Spielberg’s childhood, also won a directing prize for the filmmaking icon.

If the evening had a theme, it was one of reinvention and renewal.

Several of the winners described themselves as being given golden opportunities after being cut out from or overlooked by a business that failed to appreciate their talents. That included best actress in a motion picture musical or comedy winner Michelle Yeoh, an action star turned an awards season darling with her turn in “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” who talked about the ageism and racism she faced.

It was a theme that was amplified by Farrell, who thanked his ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’ writer and director Martin McDonagh for helped to rechart his career path when he cast him in the 2008 black comedy “In Bruges.”

And echoed by best supporting actor winner Ke Huy Quan, a former child actor who had stopped acting before he was cast as Yeoh’s husband in “Everything Everywhere All at Once.”

There were also several speeches that reached emotional crescendos, such as best supporting actress winner Angela Bassett, honoured for her turn as a grieving monarch in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” She used her time on stage to pay tribute to Chadwick Boseman, the actor who rocketed to fame as the king of Wakanda, but whose career was cut short when he died of cancer in 2020 at the age of 43.

Other top acting awards went to Austin Butler, honoured as best actor in a motion picture drama for his shape-shifting performance as Elvis Presley in ‘Elvis’, and to Cate Blanchett, named best actress in a motion picture drama for her work as an abusive conductor in ‘Tar.’

Zendaya was named best actress in a TV drama for her work as a troubled high schooler in ‘Euphoria’, while Kevin Costner won the prize for best actor in a TV drama for his work as a rancher in “Yellowstone.”

Lead actors in TV limited or anthology series awards went to Amanda Seyfried in ‘The Dropout’ and Evan Peters in ‘Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story’.

Eddie Murphy and Ryan Murphy were the recipients of the Cecil B. DeMille Award, recognisng career achievement in movies, and the Carol Burnett Award, honouring career achievement in television, respectively.

Ryan Murphy used his speech to recognize openly gay or trans performers he worked with such as MJ Rodriguez, Jeremy Pope, Niecy Nash, and Billy Porter, calling them signs of “hope and progress.”

“Use them as your north stars,” Murphy told viewers who might not see themselves reflected often on screen or who might feel under attack because of their race or sexual orientation.

Eddie Murphy was more irreverent in his time on stage, poking fun at a viral moment from last year’s Oscars, while telling the audience that he followed a simple blueprint for success in the movie business.

“Pay your taxes, mind your business and keep Will Smith’s wife’s name out your fucking mouth,” Eddie Murphy said, referencing the actor’s assault of Chris Rock.

The focus of the evening was on the fantasies and fables being spun on the big and small screen alike, but glimmers of the painful reality being experienced in parts of the world managed to break through the glitz and glamour.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, president of Ukraine, appeared on video to rally viewers to his country’s cause as it continues to be locked in an existential battle with Russia.

“The tide is turning and it is already clear who will win,” Zelensky said to loud applause.

Kohli’s ton propels India to 67-run victory over Lanka

Kohli was in imperious touch, picking slower deliveries with ease and ramping short balls over keeper’s head while maintaining the balance between front foot and back foot strokeplay and earned reprieves when his catches were dropped on 52 and 81…reports Asian Lite News

Virat Kohli’s 45th ODI century and captain Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill fifties powered India to a 67-run victory over Sri Lanka in the first game and 1-0 lead in the three-match series at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium, here on Tuesday.

An opening stand of 143 between Gill, who made 70 off 60 and Rohit, who smashed 83 off 67 balls, put India into ascendancy early and set the tone for a big total. Then Kohli smacked his second consecutive ODI century, 113 off 87 balls, making the most out of two reprieves while hitting 12 fours and a six for India to make an improbable 373/7.

In reply, Sri Lanka made 306/8, with Shanaka’s 88-ball 102 coming too late after opener Pathum Nissanka made 72 off 80 balls. Young tearaway pacer Umran Malik picked figures of 3/57, while Mohammed Siraj scalped an impressive 2/30. Mohammed Shami, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Hardik Pandya had a wicket each as the hosts’ now have 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

On a flat pitch with a lightning fast outfield, Kohli was initially watchful. He then got his first two boundaries by stylishly driving off his wrists against Shanaka and when Wanindu Hasaranga dropped short, he was quick to go on backfoot and whipped through mid-wicket for a brace of boundaries.

He had some serious timing in his drives, like driving on a length ball outside the off-stump off debutant Dilshan Madushanka run through the fast outfield for a boundary. He was magical in whips off wrists, like the one which went over mid-wicket for six and got him his fifty.

Kohli was in imperious touch, picking slower deliveries with ease and ramping short balls over keeper’s head while maintaining the balance between front foot and back foot strokeplay and earned reprieves when his catches were dropped on 52 and 81.

Soon, he got his second hundred at the venue off 80 balls, punching the air in delight and getting a roaring applause from the crowd. After picking two more boundaries, Kohli fell when his slog-sweep off Kasun Rajitha brought out a top-edge and was caught by the keeper, bringing an end to a spectacular knock.

Pushed into batting first, Rohit got going for India with a silken drive through mid-off for four off Kasun Rajitha in the opening over. From there, it was a boundary hitting show from Rohit and Gill, showcasing their full array of shots in an attractive display of stroke play in the power-play.

The most delightful of them was Gill cutting twice and slicing off Madushanka for a hat-trick of fours while Rohit was assured in his pulls off Rajitha as India got 75 off power-play. Rohit also survived two DRS calls on lbws before reaching his 47th ODI fifty with a sweep through backward square leg for four off leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga.

Gill also survived an lbw review on umpire’s call before bringing up his fifth half-century in 16 ODI innings off 51 balls. He did another hat-trick of boundaries when he whipped twice and brought out the drive once against left-arm spinner Dunith Wellalage, before Rohit smacked a six over the bowler’s head.

The opening partnership ended when Gill was beaten on the flick and was trapped lbw by Shanaka. Four overs later, Rohit got a big inside edge off Madushanka and saw his off-stump being uprooted.

Shreyas Iyer upped the ante with quick boundaries, but mistimed the sweep to backward square leg off Dhananjaya de Silva. KL Rahul was productive in his 29-ball 39 before seeing his leg-stump being smashed off Rajitha.

Hardik and Axar Patel couldn’t do much with the bat as 17 runs came off the last three overs. But efforts of Kohli, Rohit, and Gill ensured India posted a large total as top six batters batted with a strike-rate above 100.

Chasing 374, Nissanka got going with three boundaries off Shami. But Siraj helped India bounce back with his immaculate line and length — forcing Avishka Fernando to miscue a leading edge to mid-off and then castling Kusal Mendis through the gate with a sharp nip-backer.

Nissanka was involved in a brief 41-run stand with Charith Asalanka, before Umran had the latter gloving behind to keeper, though replays later showed there was no bat involved. Nissanka continued to drive and sweep with ease while de Silva took time before driving, lofting and sweeping effortlessly.

The 72-run partnership ended when Shami got a length ball to swerve away and forced the latter to nick behind without any footwork, falling for 47. Six overs later, Nissanka’s fighting knock came to an end when he mistimed a pull to mid-wicket off Umran.

Hasaranga smacked Chahal for a brace of sixes over mid-wicket and lofted over cover for four. But the leg-spinner had the last laugh, as the right-handed batter holed out to deep mid-wicket. In the next over, Umran had Wellalage caught at first slip for a golden duck and fastened Sri Lanka’s crumbling.

Chamika Karunaratne fell to Hardik while trying to loft off him and hit straight to mid-on. Shanaka was waging a valiant battle for Sri Lanka, lofting uppishly while slamming and timing the ball hard to get boundaries and get his fifty in as many balls.

He continued to drive, loft, pull, and slash on the up before getting his century in 87 balls with a cover drive off Shami in the final over, after Rohit withdrew the appeal of his run-out from non-striker’s end when he was at 98.

Shanaka finished off the innings with a six over deep mid-wicket to bring the century of his partnership in 73 balls with Rajitha as well as the side’s 300. But it was insufficient for Sri Lanka to avoid a loss in the series opener.

Brief Scores: India 373/7 in 50 overs (Virat Kohli 113, Rohit Sharma 83; Kasun Rajitha 3/88, Dasun Shanaka 1/22) beat Sri Lanka 306/8 in 50 overs (Dasun Shanaka 108 not out, Pathum Nissanka 72; Umran Malik 3/57, Mohammed Siraj 2/30) by 67 runs

Late pull-out by Bumrah sours India’s Lanka ODIs plans

At the same time, there is some cheer for India as captain Rohit Sharma is back to lead the side since he sustained a left thumb injury during the ODI series in Bangladesh in December 2022..reports Asian Lite News

After a 2-1 T20I series win against Sri Lanka, India are all set to turn their focus towards ODIs against the Dasun Shanaka-led side, with the series kickstarting from ACA Stadium in Guwahati on Tuesday.

With the series all set to mark the start of a crucial year as the ODI World Cup will be held in India in October-November, the hosts’ have been hit hard by a late pull-out of pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah as a precautionary measure, thus extending his delay into playing competitive cricket since suffering a reoccurrence of back injury in September 2022, which also saw him miss Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia.

At the same time, there is some cheer for India as captain Rohit Sharma is back to lead the side since he sustained a left thumb injury during the ODI series in Bangladesh in December 2022. Alongside him, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer and K.L. Rahul are expected to slot back into the playing eleven in Guwahati after not being a part of the T20I series against Sri Lanka.

With Rohit set to open and Kohli at number three, India need to see how they fit in Iyer, Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan. Kishan played a sensational career-best 210 against Bangladesh in Chattogram, while Gill showed he can be a solid opening option through his performances in the format in 2022.

Iyer, on the other hand, was the key figure in India’s middle order for ODIs in 2022. Moreover, the maverick Suryakumar Yadav is there in the squad too, itching to carry his T20I form into ODIs and get a spot in the Indian scheme of things for the ODI World Cup.

With the ball, veteran quick Mohammed Shami’s return will be good for India and can pair up with Mohammed Siraj, and either Arshdeep Singh or Umran Malik. It remains to be seen how India use up Hardik Pandya’s overs in the format apart from seeing how Washington Sundar and Yuzvendra Chahal fare in the spin department.

Sri Lanka, on the other hand, will be banking on skipper and seam-bowling all-rounder Dasun Shanaka to lead by example after doing the same in the T20I series. They would wish for young opener Pathum Nissanka to give a solid start with Avishka Fernando, Charith Asalanka and Kusal Mendis chipping in.

Wanindu Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana will take care of the spin bowling department with leg-spinner Jeffrey Vandersay coming in too. In the fast-bowling unit, they have options in Dilshan Madushanka’s left-arm fast-bowling apart from pacers in Lahiru Kumara, Kasun Rajitha and Pramod Madushan.

Squads:

India: Rohit Sharma (Captain), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Shreyas Iyer, K.L Rahul (wicketkeeper), Ishan Kishan (wicketkeeper), Hardik Pandya (vice-captain), Washington Sundar, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, Mohd. Shami, Mohd. Siraj, Umran Malik, Arshdeep Singh.

Sri Lanka: Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Mendis (wicketkeeper), Avishka Fernando, Charith Asalanka, Dhananjaya de Silva, Dasun Shanaka (captain), Wanindu Hasaranga, Chamika Karunaratne, Maheesh Theekshana, Dilshan Madushanka, Lahiru Kumara, Ashen Bandara, Nuwanidu Fernando, Pramod Madushan, Dunith Wellalage, Kasun Rajitha, Jeffrey Vandersay, Sadeera Samarawickrama

It felt like Lanka against Surya, says Hardik Pandya

The 112 not out at Rajkot was a trademark Suryakumar innings laced with inside-out drives, scoops and supple wrists to slam the Sri Lankan bowlers for seven fours and nine sixes all around the stadium…reports Asian Lite News

In India’s 91-run thrashing of Sri Lanka at Rajkot to win the T20I series 2-1, Suryakumar Yadav was undoubtedly the star with his belligerent 112 not out off just 51 balls, which left the fans enthralled on Saturday evening.

India skipper Hardik Pandya was also in awe of Suryakumar’s abilities to change the game and his 360-degree shots, saying the right-hander’s show with the bat actually crushes the morale of bowlers while helping the Indian batters.

“It felt like Sri Lanka against Surya. It makes my life very easy, and that is the reason I have always mentioned that someone like Surya is so important to us in white-ball cricket. The way he changes the game and the way he plays some shots, it actually breaks the morale of the bowler, which helps the other batters as well,” said Hardik in the post-match press conference.

The 112 not out at Rajkot was a trademark Suryakumar innings laced with inside-out drives, scoops and supple wrists to slam the Sri Lankan bowlers for seven fours and nine sixes all around the stadium. It was also his third T20I century in 43 innings. Hardik revealed one doesn’t necessarily have to speak to Suryakumar ahead of a match.

“You don’t tell him. See, the kind form Surya’s been playing in, the kind of clarity he has, you don’t have to go and speak to him. He’s always very clear about his plans, And that’s the reason he’s successful in this format. He doesn’t doubt his ability.”

“Whenever he’s in double mind, he always comes (to me) and we have a chat. It’s just about giving that little bit of clarity. But more often than not, I don’t need to speak to him. It’s just about to go out there and just enjoy, which he does. I don’t think anyone has to say anything to him.”

Amidst the Suryakumar show, Hardik was quick in appreciating Rahul Tripathi, who unleashed an early counter-attack with his 35 off just 16 balls, slamming five fours and two sixes, ensuring India were 53/2 at the end of power-play.

“Obviously everyone knows what Surya did, but special mention to Rahul Tripathi as well. The kind of intent he showed – something which is so natural to him – can change the game and the momentum.”

“If you see the first couple of overs, the ball was doing something, and people outside, even the next batter, they all thought there was something in the wicket. But because of his intent, the bowlers changed their length and all of a sudden the ball stopped moving. Then it was like they (Sri Lanka) were chasing the game.”

SKY, bowlers shine as India seal series win over Lanka

Arshdeep Singh was the most successful bowler for India with 3-20, while Yuzvendra Chahal (2-30), Hardik Pandya (2-30) and Umran Malik (2-31) picked two wickets each with Axar Patel also getting one wicket….reports Asian Lite News

Suryakumar Yadav’s blistering unbeaten century (112 not out off 51 balls) and dominating performance by bowlers helped India thrash Sri Lanka by 91 runs in the third and final T20I and clinch three-match series 2-1 at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium, here on Saturday.

With his beautiful wristy shots, Suryakumar made the opponent team feel like he isn’t from the same planet, treating every bowler with disdain to power India to a mammoth total of 228/5 in 20 overs. Apart from Suryakumar, Shubman Gill played a decent knock (46 off 36) while Rahul Tripathi gave India some quickfire runs in the Power-play with his 35 off 16.

In reply, openers Pathum Nissanka (15) and Kusal Mendis (23) gave Sri Lanka a solid start but they failed to build on it and kept losing wickets at regular intervals. The likes of Dasun Shanaka (23), Dhananjaya de Silva (22) and Charith Asalanka (19) got starts but couldn’t score big as Sri Lanka were bowled out for 137 in 16.4 overs, losing by a huge margin of 91 runs.

Arshdeep Singh was the most successful bowler for India with 3-20, while Yuzvendra Chahal (2-30), Hardik Pandya (2-30) and Umran Malik (2-31) picked two wickets each with Axar Patel also getting one wicket.

Earlier, India, who won the toss and opted to bat first, lost the first wicket early as Ishan Kishan poked outside off and edged behind a swinging bouncing delivery from Madushanka in the very first over of the innings.

Kishan’s opening partner Shubman Gill also struggled to open his account for the first nine balls before he smashed Madushanka for six and four in back-to-back deliveries to get things going.

Rahul Tripathi, who walked in to bat at No 3 again, showed his attacking intent by hitting Theekshana for three fours in an over. He smashed five fours and two sixes in his blistering innings of 35 off 16 balls to give the much-needed impetus to Indian innings. He got out, cutely steer the ball to third man and found the fielder in the 6th over.

Nonetheless, Tripathi’s innings meant that India finished the Power-play at 53/2, which was good after they lost Ishan in the first over as Shubman Gill was batting steadily at the other.

But, it was Suryakumar Yadav, who wasted little time to get off the block and toyed with Sri Lankan bowlers by hitting them all around the park. The stylish batter got going with a four and a six off Karunaratne, driving over mid-off and executing the whip-pull. He also cracks a short ball from Hasaranga past point for a four.

Theekshana sneaked in a quiet over but the visitors couldn’t keep Surya quiet for too long. A four coming down the track to Karunaratne followed by a typical scoop over fine leg for a six for Suryakumar helped India past 100 in the 11th over, and also brought up his half-century stand of 29 deliveries with Gill, who was watching the ball sail over the boundary line from the other end.

A boundary over extra cover brought the 14th T20I half-century for Suryakumar in just 26-balls. It was also Surya’s ninth fifty-plus score (including a century) in his last 15 innings as India were 131/2 after 13 overs.

After watching the Suryakumar carnage from the other end, Shubman Gill too decided to free his arms and hit Hasaranga for an 84m six over mid-wicket. However, the spinner had the last laugh as he deceived Gill by the length and bowled him, leaving India at 163-3 after 14.4 overs.

Once Gill got out, the stage was set for finisher Hardik Pandya but the skipper couldn’t capitalise on it and got out for just 4 runs. The next batter Deepak Hooda started his innings with a four but got out soon on a cutter from Madushanka.

But, there was no stopping Suryakumar, who slammed his third T20I century in 45 balls, which was the second fastest half-century by an Indian in the shortest format of the game after Rohit Sharma, who got the milestone in just 35 deliveries against Sri Lanka as well in 2017.

On the other hand, Axar Patel (21 not out off 9) continued from where he left in the previous game and played a little cameo towards the end. With both Suryakumar and Axar hitting, India scored 28 runs in the last two overs and posted a total of 228/5 in 20 overs.

Brief scores: India 228/5 in 20 overs (Suryakumar Yadav 112 not out, Shubman Gill 46, Rahul Tripathi 35; Dilshan Madushanka 2-55) beat Sri Lanka 137 all out in 16.4 overs (Kusal Mendis 23, Dasun Shanaka 23; Arshdeep Singh 3/20) by 91 runs
