UAE: National Policy on Biofuels Revealed

The policy has been developed by the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure (MoEI) in coordination with its strategic partners from the public and private sectors…reports Asian Lite News

The UAE has revealed the details of the National Policy on Biofuels, recently approved by the UAE Cabinet. The policy supports the country’s shift to clean and sustainable energy sources.

The policy has been developed by the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure (MoEI) in coordination with its strategic partners from the public and private sectors, aiming to provide sustainable fuel alternatives and further diversify the energy mix.

Suhail bin Mohammed Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, said. “The policy will play an important role in our decarbonisation drive. It will contribute to reducing carbon emissions through increasing the consumption of biodiesel by 20 percent by 2050. It will lower the carbon footprint of diesel cars by 75 percent in case of consuming biodiesel by 100 percent.”

He added, “The National Policy on Biofuels will help achieve the objectives of the UAE Energy Strategy 2050. It will enhance the implementation of circular economy principles in various sectors, such as infrastructure, mobility, and manufacturing, and will drive economic growth through using waste as input for production.”

The Minister noted that MoEI works collaboratively with its partners to develop regulations and controls to oversee the distribution of biofuels, establish standards governing the production and utilisation of biofuels, and implement criteria and mandates for biofuel production within the country.

He highlighted that the policy supports the objectives of the National Energy and Water Demand-side Management Programme and the UAE Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative.

Ali Khalifa Alshamsi, Director General of the Emirates General Petroleum Corporation – Emarat – said, “The adoption of the National Policy on Biofuels is a strategic step that will pave the way towards supporting the UAE’s leading role in clean energy production and diversification of its sources. It also aims to support the UAE’s efforts in exploring alternatives to fossil fuels, thereby enhancing energy supply and contributing to the nation’s sustainability and climate action objectives.”

Al Shamsi added, “We recognise the significant efforts of various national entities within the energy sector, including Emarat, in developing the comprehensive policy document. This comes in line with Emarat’s commitment to supporting the successful implementation of the terms and guidelines of this policy by adhering to it across all our operations and processes. In doing so, we will continue to drive sustainable and cost-effective energy solutions to achieve sustainable development.”

Saif Humaid Al Falasi, CEO of ENOC Group, said, “The announcement by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, to approve the National Policy on Biofuels in the UAE, reaffirms the Government’s efforts to transition the energy sector in the country towards a diverse and flexible energy mix to meet future requirements and implement the UAE Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative.”

Al Falasi added, “Building on ENOC’s leading position in the energy sector at the national level, we launched biofuel in the UAE in 2017, which is one of the advanced alternative fuel products. We have expanded the application of this biofuel to reach various sectors, including operating Marine Abras and some of our assets such as ENOC Link trucks, in addition to providing it to customers through the innovative ‘e-link’ platform for fuel delivery.”

Yousif bin Saeed Lootah, Founder and CEO of Lootah Biofuels, said, “The UAE Cabinet’s approval of the National Policy on Biofuels is a game-changer for the energy sector. Establishing a robust local biofuel market not only addresses the need to reduce emissions but also promotes sustainability in other sectors, such as transportation, agriculture, and hospitality, fostering a greener economy.

“We at Lootah Biofuels take pride in our role in developing this forward-thinking policy that recognises the multifaceted potential of biofuels. The policy reaffirms the UAE’s environmental stewardship and supports the country’s goal of producing 700 million liters of sustainable aviation fuel annually and reaching net zero by 2050.”

Ahmad Bin Eisa Alserkal, Chairman of Alserkal Group, said, “The successful implementation of the National Policy on Biofuels will contribute to a decrease in the country’s carbon footprint and reliance on a new, sustainable source. By encouraging the use of sustainable and renewable energy sources, the UAE is demonstrating its commitment to combating climate change and enhancing environmental management. In addition, the adoption of biofuels will not only reduce greenhouse gas emissions but will also contribute to the country’s energy security and stimulate economic growth through the development of a thriving biofuel industry. Overall, the policy indicates a progressive step towards a greener and more sustainable future for the country.”

Bader Saeed Al Lamki, CEO of ADNOC Distribution, said, “The introduction of a National Policy on Biofuels is a welcome step in the UAE’s sustainable mobility journey. Representing a milestone in the forward-thinking ambition of this nation, today’s news reaffirms the Government’s efforts to ensure the UAE maintains a world-class and industry-leading energy sector.”

Salem Bin Ashoor, Director and Head of Country, bp UAE, said, “Biofuels play a critical role in the global journey towards net zero emissions. It is an important component that offers decarbonisation solutions for sectors where electrification remains a challenge.

“With growing customer demand for biofuels, a nationwide policy is indispensable to regulate the sector, which is when approved, the UAE can secure biofuels demands and boost its production and supply via regulations and mandates. The biofuels national policy will significantly contribute to the UAE’s commitment to achieving its clean energy goals and Net Zero by 2050 strategic initiative.

“We, at bp, are happy to share best practices and expertise, collaborating with partners on various projects in support of the UAE’s energy transition agenda.”

By deeply integrating the principles of economic, social, and environmental sustainability into its growth strategies, Dubai seeks to be at the global forefront of sustainable urban development. Aligned with the objectives of Dubai’s Economic Agenda D33, the establishment of the Dubai Environment and Climate Change Authority seeks to raise the contribution of the circular and green economy to the emirate’s GDP. UAE Envoy Hosts Iftar, Hails India Ties

UAE envoy said that they want to use the event to celebrate the values shared between New Delhi and Abu Dhabi in terms of peace, harmony and brotherhood….reports Asian Lite News

UAE Ambassador to India, Abdulnasser Jamal Alshaali, hosted a ‘Ramadan Iftar’ event at the UAE Embassy in the national capital on Thursday.

Hailing India-UAE ties, the envoy said that they want to use the event to celebrate the values shared between New Delhi and Abu Dhabi in terms of peace, harmony and brotherhood.

Speaking to ANI, the UAE envoy said, “We want this to remain a key event on everyone’s calendar in the diplomatic community and beyond. I feel very happy that other missions are organising their own Iftaars, inviting people over Ramadan…we want to make sure that we make use of the opportunity to celebrate the values that the UAE and India share in terms of peace, harmony and brotherhood.”

The UAE Ambassador appreciated the relationship between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. He further said that the momentum of India-UAE ties is increasing and there still lies room for further improvement.

“A lot of progress has been made in so many fields and sectors, but there’s always more to be done. The relationship (between India and the UAE) and the charisma between the two leaders make sure that there is momentum and that this momentum keeps growing over time. The fact that they keep visiting each other’s country keeps everyone on their toes to strive to do more and better in this relationship,” Alshaali said.

He added, “No matter what you achieve, in any relationship, there is always room for improvement. There’s always room to do things differently. This is why we end up with a long list of homework for both ambassadors and senior officials in both governments.”

Earlier in February, Prime Minister Modi went on an official visit to UAE. He held a bilateral meeting with UAE President al Nahyan and several other top leaders. Several agreements were signed between the two countries.

During the visit, PM Modi also inaugurated BAPS Hindu Mandir in Abu Dhabi, which is the first Hindu temple in Abu Dhabi. He also addressed the Indian diaspora at ‘Ahlan Modi’ event.

On the sidelines of his visit, the Ministry of Investment of the UAE and the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology of India had signed a Memorandum of Understanding, setting out a framework for the expansion of bilateral investment cooperation in the digital infrastructure sector, with a special emphasis on data centre projects in India.

The memorandum marks a significant step towards the development of opportunities in digital infrastructure and artificial intelligence between both nations. This reflects the lead taken by the UAE and India in furthering regional and digital connectivity.

The MoU was signed by Mohamed Hassan Alsuwaidi, Minister of Investment, and Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Minister of External Affairs of India on behalf of the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology of India.

Through the memorandum, both countries will jointly explore, assess and evaluate the technical and investment potential of developing data centre projects in India with an initial capacity of up to 2 gigawatts.

The memorandum will also promote and facilitate investments in Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI), Artificial Intelligence (AI) and aspects related to R&D and Innovation. To support the deployment of a supercomputer cluster in India, both countries will assess the technical and investment potential of developing AI compute capacity of 8 exaflops for use by government, public, private sectors and academia.

The UAE was the fourth-largest investor in India in 2023 and the seventh-largest source of Foreign Direct Investment overall. Meanwhile, India currently holds a position among the top 15 countries globally regarding data centre capacity, boasting a network of 151 data centres spread across its different regions. The country’s internet economy is expected to reach US$1 trillion by 2030, a significant surge from US$175 billion in 2022.

This growth is largely driven by the widespread preference for digital interactions among consumers and merchants in the country, which has a population exceeding one billion. The trajectory is further accelerated by data localisation policies mandating the domestic storage of local data, as well as “Digital India”, an initiative launched by the Government of India to ensure its services are electronically accessible to citizens. The increased data consumption requires enhanced digital infrastructure and a resilient data centre ecosystem.

The memorandum focuses on creating strong and effective collaboration by building relationships between public and private organisations in the UAE and India. It also facilitates knowledge exchange. (with inputs from ANI)

Mothers’ Endowment Campaign Raises Dh505M

The Mothers’ Endowment campaign, launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, to honour mothers by establishing an AED1 billion endowment fund for supporting the education of millions around the world, has raised AED505 million in donations, one week after its launch.

This is the result of contributions made by businessmen, individuals, businesses and public and private sector companies, in a massive community response that reflects the culture of giving deeply rooted in the UAE community, quick to support an initiative that provides education, training and empowerment of underprivileged individuals to help them improve their quality of life and drive development and stability in their communities.

Sustainable charity

Mohammad Al Gergawi, Secretary-General of Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives (MBRGI), said, “The Mothers’ Endowment campaign reflects the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum for sustainable good, and his constant directives to dedicate MBRGI’s capabilities and expertise to meeting the needs of underprivileged populations around the world.”

“The campaign, which aims to honour mothers by establishing an educational endowment fund, comes at a time when hundreds of millions of children and youth around the world face challenging conditions that deprive them of the basic right to education. This initiative offers them hope and a chance for a better life,” he added.

Praising the wide response to the Mothers’ Endowment campaign and how it embodies the noble values on which the UAE was founded, he said, “The positive response to the campaign, evident in raising AED505 million in only one week, helps solidify the UAE’s status as a global capital of humanitarian and charity work. We are confident the campaign will continue to gain momentum in the coming days.”

Organized under the MBRGI umbrella, the Mothers’ Endowment campaign allows contributors to honour their mothers by making donations in their name to help support underprivileged communities sustainably through education. The campaign also promotes the values of honouring parents, kindness, compassion and solidarity, while bolstering the UAE’s humanitarian role.

Proceeds of the Mothers’ Endowment will go to support the education of millions of individuals around the world, offering them the necessary tools and skills to lead independent, dignified lives. The allocations will be carried out in partnership with humanitarian organisations. It targets those who seek education and vocational training in underprivileged communities, which helps promote their stability and welfare.

Despite accelerated global efforts to realise the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the UN 2030 Agenda, the 4th SDG of quality education faces significant challenges as reports warn that failure to implement urgent and sustainable measures could mean that 84 million children and youths will remain out of school by 2030, while 300 million children will miss out on basic reading, writing and math skills, further hindering their development and their future chances of education and work.

According to a recent report by the UNESCO, 263 million children around the world are currently out of school. This includes 61 million children in the primary school age (5 to 11 years), 60 million children in the middle-school age (11 to 14) and 142 million high school students (aged 15 to 19 years).

Donation channels

The Mothers’ Endowment campaign welcomes donations and contributions to the endowment fund from institutions and individuals across six main channels including the campaign’s website (mothersfund.ae), as well as a dedicated call centre via the toll-free number (800 9999). Donations are also possible via bank transfers in the UAE dirham to the campaign bank account number with Emirates Islamic Bank (AE790340003708472909201). Donations via SMS are possible by sending the word “Mother” to the following numbers (1034, 1035, 1036, 1038) for Etisalat by e& users. Other possible platforms for donating to the campaign are the DubaiNow app by clicking the “Donations” tab, and Dubai’s community contributions platform Jood.
