Abu Dhabi aims to attract 24 million visitors this year

Ahead of Arabian Travel Market 2023, the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi), has announced new performance targets for Abu Dhabi, which include plans to attract more than 24 million visitors to the emirate by the end of 2023.

Saood Abdulaziz Al Hosani, Undersecretary at DCT Abu Dhabi, affirmed the start of an ambitious new chapter for the emirate’s tourism sector. The new targets follow a surge in Abu Dhabi’s tourism sector in 2022, with hotel occupancy rates and other metrics demonstrating that the sector’s revival is well underway. The emirate received a total of 18 million visitors representing a 13 per cent increase from the previous year, while the hotel occupancy rates reached 70 per cent, which surpasses the Middle East average of 67 per cent. The emirate welcomed visitors from around the world, with the highest number of international visitors arriving from India, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom, and the United States, respectively. The improved domestic and international market performance can be attributed to increased destination awareness and consideration of Abu Dhabi’s increased range of year-round entertainment and sporting events, as well as trade events and roadshows.

In Abu Dhabi, we are demonstrating the power of partnerships across the tourism sector and the fact that collectively we can thrive.”

Commenting on the new targets, Saleh Mohamed Al Geziry, Director General for Tourism at DCT Abu Dhabi, said: “The success we have achieved so far inspires us to strive for more. We are committed to delivering on our ambitions for 2023 by further elevating the successful strategy of creating and delivering unique experiences for everyone to enjoy and a diverse range of year-round events for visitors in collaboration with our global IP partners. This is complemented by a MICE industry that continues to thrive, owing to the emirate’s world-leading venues, hotels and supporting facilities.

Last year, Abu Dhabi Calendar successfully hosted a diverse range of over 100 events during a 180-day period, featuring an impressive line-up of A-list global talent. From the legendary Grammy award-winning singer Sting to K-pop sensations BLACKPINK, and Oscar-winning Indian composer A.R. Rahman, the events left audiences captivated and entertained.

AIIB to set up first overseas base in Abu Dhabi

Dr. Al Jaber said that the agreement to host the overseas operational office of the AIIB reflects the UAE’s commitment to enhancing cooperation with international organisations …reports Asian Lite News

Dr. Sultan bin Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, COP28 President-Designate, and UAE Governor of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB); and Jin Liqun, President of AIIB, signed the Host Member Agreement for establishing the AIIB’s Interim Operational Hub in the UAE on the Abu Dhabi Global Market, AIIB’s first overseas office.

On this occasion, Dr. Al Jaber and Jin Liqun held in-depth discussions on the emerging opportunities for the AIIB to strengthen its role in the region as a leading development bank and on the importance of reforming the international financial institutions (IFIs) and finding practical and comprehensive solutions to address the imperative of scaling up financing of global climate action through these institutions.

Dr. Al Jaber said that the agreement to host the overseas operational office of the AIIB reflects the UAE’s commitment to enhancing cooperation with international organisations and institutions focused on sustainable economic development for developing countries. He also noted that the operational office would serve as a strategic destination in the Middle East and the world, supporting the Bank’s development agenda and financing infrastructure projects to achieve sustainable economic growth, especially where it is needed the most in the global south.

“The world is playing catch up on the goals of the Paris Agreement and the most significant obstacle we face is capital. We need to scale up climate finance to accelerate clean energy, adaptation, and support loss and damage. International Financial Institutions, such as AIIB, can play a critical role in desriking investments and supporting emerging economies. This will boost economic growth, help eradicate poverty, and accelerate climate action.”

Dr. Al Jaber’s remarks come as preparations for COP28 are underway, with the UAE set to host the conference from 30th November – 12th December at Expo City Dubai. The issue of climate finance remains a key concern for countries who are being asked to accelerate and raise ambition on climate action.

“I have just returned from the Spring Meetings in Washington D.C., as well as the G7 meeting in Japan. At both of these major global events, climate finance took center stage. The world needs to act faster and go further to ensure the availability, accessibility, and affordability of climate finance. The AIIB can play an instrumental role in moving from ambition to action.”

“As a founding member of the AIIB, the UAE actively contributes to the bank’s sound governance and rapid growth,” Jin said. ”The establishment of the operational office in the UAE gives the bank a robust platform to manage its growing investment portfolio. It also enhances our client and member engagement, project monitoring and implementation services across the globe.”

Mohamed Saif Al Suwaidi, Director-General of Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, UAE Alternate Governor of AIIB, added that the agreement aligned with the bank’s strategic expansion and strengthened its presence in the Middle East and North Africa region. Since the start of its operations in 2016, the Bank has been operating according to an ambitious vision that has contributed to increasing the volume of financing in infrastructure projects. “The Abu Dhabi Fund for Development’s objectives also align with the bank’s strategy in financing sustainable development projects to achieve economic and social development for the benefit of developing countries,” he said.

The UAE joined as a founding and permanent member of AIIB in 2015. The bank currently has 106 members. The bank’s capital consists of US$100 billion and the UAE’s contribution to its capital amounts to approximately US$1.185 billion. The Abu Dhabi Fund for Development was mandated to represent the UAE in the bank and to actively participate in its periodic meetings. AIIB has financed 212 projects with a total value of US$40.37 billion, which have contributed to economic development and improved the quality of life for communities in beneficiary countries.

Abu Dhabi records 40% drop in labour cases last year

The decline in labour cases reflects the Department’s efforts to spread the legal culture through awareness campaigns for employees….reports Asian Lite News

A significant drop by 40 percent has been recorded in labour disputes in Abu Dhabi emirate during 2022 compared to the same period in 2021. This was as a result of the exerted awareness efforts, which contributed to strengthening the legal culture of workers and companies, and introducing them to their rights guaranteed by the Labour Laws in the UAE, according to the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department (ADJD).

Counsellor Youssef Saeed Al Abri, the Under-Secretary of the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department, attributed this qualitative achievement to the companies and individuals’ increased awareness of laws in force in the country, and the successful awareness campaigns carried out by the Department in cooperation with strategic partners. Such initiatives aimed at promoting the legal culture in line with the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of the Presidential Court, and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department, he noted.

Al Abdri pointed out that the progress of legal procedures in labour cases, and the manner in which disputes are addressed in the labour court, helped achieve enhancing economic stability for institutions and individuals. This was in accordance with the ADJD strategic plan and the emirate’s vision, which contributed to supporting the status of the emirate as an attractive destination for foreign investment and business, he added.

Furthermore, through these awareness campaigns, the Department is keen to reach a large number of clients by visiting their locations and providing them with translations in up to 5 languages such as Arabic, English, Urdu, Pashto and Bengali, as a convenient manner to speak to the target groups in their own languages. This helps make them aware of the important laws that guarantee their rights in the UAE, and to answer their questions and enquiries, and provide legal advice as well.

The decline in labour cases reflects the Department’s efforts to spread the legal culture through awareness campaigns for employees. During the past year, several campaigns were conducted at labour camps to make labourers familiar with their obligations stipulated in the new labour law.

The campaigns emphasised the need to comply with occupational safety and health instructions, to preserve production means and tools, not to possess work related papers or electronic documents for personal interests, to adhere to good conduct, not to disclose secrets, to maintain the work, to diligently develop functional and professional skills and to raise performance level.

The campaigns also aimed at introducing employees to contracting procedures with employers, to the correct methods and channels for filing complaints, to obtaining the rights under the employment contract in case of termination of the contract or the employer’s failure to fulfil his or her obligations, and to the termination requirements.

The mechanism for obtaining unemployment insurance, regulations of transfer to another facility for work, the way to obtain a new work permit as per the specified rules, the importance of referring to the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation in case the agreed job opportunity was not provided by the employer or the worker did not receive the salary on time, are all highlighted by these campaigns.

The awareness drives also stressed the employees’ right to leave the company upon fulfilling his obligations, and the importance of adhering to the laws to express dissatisfaction, file complaints through legal means without causing chaos and making gatherings.

Sustainable fishing practices boost Abu Dhabi’s environmental efforts

An increase in the index indicates that the administrative measures implemented in the fisheries are providing a positive impact, which will help lead to the recovery of fish stocks by 2030…reports Asian Lite News

For the fourth year in a row, the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) has recorded a significant improvement in the “Sustainable Exploitation Index” following the implementation of fishing-related measures and procedures.

The index increased from 8.9 percent in 2018 to 69.1 percent at the end of 2022 and was calculated by evaluating a total of 35 fish species, which accounted for 97 percent of landings in 2022.

Since 2001, the EAD has been monitoring the state of fish stocks according to two basic indicators of sustainability. The first, the “Spawning Biomass per Recruit” (SBR) index, is the percentage of the fish that are old enough to spawn, allowing for the renewal of the stock. The second indicator is the “Sustainable Exploitation Index”, used to describe the proportion of species that are sustainably exploited.

An increase in the index indicates that the administrative measures implemented in the fisheries are providing a positive impact, which will help lead to the recovery of fish stocks by 2030. The Agency’s data revealed that it had achieved the target percentage of the Spawning Biomass per Recruit, which determines the proportion of the stock volume of 30 main commercial species compared to the volume of their untapped stock. In 2022, an increase of 40 percent in the average stock size was recorded, up from 25.6 percent in 2020.

The landing quantities of some major fish species have improved, as has an expansion of their spread thanks to strengthened protection operations and the activation of regulatory procedures carried out by the Agency. This has relieved pressure on fisheries and contributed to their recovery, proving that the results obtained in fisheries performance indicators underscore the importance of the EAD’s continuing implementation of a ban on Gargoor fishing and encircling nets methods in Abu Dhabi waters.

The Agency stressed the importance of its existing cooperation with the Critical Infrastructure and Coastal Protection Authority in preserving the marine environment, regulating the exploitation of fish wealth, and supporting eco-tourism and cultural and recreational activities in Abu Dhabi.

The Agency also praised the commitment of fishermen and the cooperation of fishermen’s associations and their effective role in implementing the decisions and procedures related to fishing by the Agency to protect fish stocks. This has contributed significantly to reducing the effects of overfishing on the marine environment and achieving an improvement in the state of fish stocks in the emirate’s waters for the fourth consecutive year.

The Agency recorded an increase of 91 percent in the landing rate of “Zuraidi” (Golden Trevally) fish since 2020, up to approximately 15,000kg in 2022, while the percentage increase in the landing of Jedd (Pickhandle Barracuda) fish reached 90 percent, reaching about 112,000kg last year. The rate of landing of Faskar (Two Bar Seabream) fish has increased by 96 percent since 2020, to about 800kg in 2022. About “Umm Dhrais” (Indian Snapper) fish, the Agency recorded a 25-fold increase in the landing of this species, which increased from a total of 51kg in 2020 to approximately 1,300kg in 2022.

In 2022, the average mature stock size of “Hamourr” (Orange Spotted Grouper) and “Naiser” (Ehrenbergs Snapper) fish increased by 18 percent and five percent, respectively, compared to 2021, while the relative average adult stock size of “Kanaad”, (Kingfish) “Shaari” (Spangled Emperor), “Durduman” (Yellow Tail Scad), “Jesh” (Orange Spotted Trevally) and “Dhile” (Talang Queenfish) increased by 25 percent, 20 percent, 19 percent, six percent, and four percent, respectively, compared to 2020. The average relative size of mature fish stocks increased by 20 percent compared to 2019, and the “Shaam” (Yellowfin Seabream) fish achieved an eight percent growth in the average size of mature fish compared to 2018.

EU envoys plant mangroves in Abu Dhabi

The visit to Jubail Mangrove Park highlighted the importance of collective efforts in protecting and restoring mangrove ecosystems to mitigate climate change and achieve a sustainable future…reports Asian Lite news

They also had the opportunity to plant several mangrove trees alongside youth participants.

The European Union Ambassador to the UAE, Andrea Matteo Fontana, accompanied by a delegation of ambassadors and representatives from 16 EU member states, visited Jubail Mangrove Park in Abu Dhabi on Monday to take a stand against climate change by planting mangroves and raising awareness about the importance of these ecosystems.

The visit was organised by the EU Delegation to the UAE to highlight the crucial role of mangroves as a nature-based solution in mitigating climate change and support the UAE’s ambitious initiative to plant 100 million mangroves by 2030, as well as contribute to the efforts of the UAE-led Mangrove Alliance for Climate.

The visit also saw the participation of youth from the Arab Youth Centre and the UAE Youth Climate Delegates. The delegation was welcomed by Ahmed Al Hashmi, Executive Director of the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi; Dr. Das Himansu, and Huda Al Mazrouei.

The delegation was also joined by representatives from Jubail Island, including Eng. Abdullah Al Shamsi, Corporate Director, and Mohamed Hafez, Adventure Director. During the visit, the delegation was given a guided tour of Jubail Mangrove Park, where they learned more about the important role of mangroves in combating climate change.

“Mangroves have a carbon-storing superpower,” said Andrea Matteo Fontana. “They absorb up to 10 times more carbon than a tropical rainforest. Mangroves are vital for our planet, and we are proud to support the UAE’s efforts to protect and restore these crucial ecosystems.”

The EU is committed to working with global partners to find sustainable solutions to climate change. The European Green Deal sets ambitious targets to make Europe climate neutral by 2050, while the EU’s biodiversity strategy for 2030 aims to protect nature and reverse the degradation of ecosystems.

The EU has also committed to planting at least three billion additional trees in the EU by 2030.

As COP28 approaches, the EU has committed to working with the UAE COP Presidency, the Youth Climate Champion, and global partners to find sustainable solutions to climate change.

“Working together with international partners and youth is essential if we are to emerge from this climate crisis stronger,” said Fontana.

The visit to Jubail Mangrove Park highlighted the importance of collective efforts in protecting and restoring mangrove ecosystems to mitigate climate change and achieve a sustainable future.

Abu Dhabi to host World Investment Forum in October

UNCTAD Secretary-General Rebeca Grynspan and Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, Minister of State for Foreign Trade, today presented the priority themes of the forum….reports Asian Lite News

The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) has announced Abu Dhabi as the host city of its 8th World Investment Forum, to be held from 16th to 20th October 2023.

Taking place under the theme “Investing in Sustainable Development”, the forum will bring together government leaders, global CEOs and other investment stakeholders to tackle the key challenges brought about by multiple global crises, including the need to invest in food security, energy, health, supply-chain resilience, infrastructure and productive capacity growth in the least developed countries.

UNCTAD Secretary-General Rebeca Grynspan and Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, Minister of State for Foreign Trade, today presented the priority themes of the forum.

The forum will take place a few weeks ahead of the annual climate summit COP28, which will also be held in the UAE. The forum will enable policymakers and other stakeholders to find solutions and reach consensus on priority issues, and its outcomes will feed into COP28 negotiations.

Important opportunity

“At a time when much of the world is struggling with contracting markets and a post-COVID recovery that has yet to fully take hold, UNCTAD’s 8th World Investment Forum is an important opportunity to take a long-term perspective,” Dr. Al Zeyoudi said.

He said the challenges the world faces, whether systemic issues such as climate change, inequality and food security or mitigating the pandemic’s impact on trade, investment and supply chain resilience, require unity of purpose and action on an unprecedented scale.

Dr. Al Zeyoudi added, “It is fitting that the event takes place in the UAE, where we are continuously reinventing and remodelling our economy to anticipate future changes. Decades of UAE innovation are now generating a level of recognition and trust in our systems and processes, while various national initiatives have helped to attract unprecedented investment and talent, transforming our nation into a truly global business hub.”

From the host city Abu Dhabi, Mohamed Ali Al Shorafa, Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development, underscored the critical need to safeguard and build on the process of global reform, including the liberalisation of trade and responsible investment policies.

“Against the backdrop of a highly volatile global economic landscape, the international community shares a collective responsibility to address the challenges facing the multilateral trading and development system,” he said. “It is imperative that we continue to come together, cooperate and identify much-needed solutions and alternative ways for the prosperity of all countries and humankind.”

Al Shorafa said the UAE proudly embodies the ideals of openness, equality and sustainability, the pillars of its successful international business and trade doctrine. “We will continue to work with all countries towards alleviating poverty and supporting long-term growth for sustainable development. We have a clear vision on how to scale the solutions required to help move the world forward and achieve real progress.”

For her part, Trypans emphasised the vital role the forum plays in mobilising efforts by the international investment-development community to address global challenges, which have both multiplied and converged in recent years.

“I see how investors, firms and governments are, in increasing numbers, putting sustainability and long-term value at the core of their activities,” she said. “The World Investment Forum aims to bring them all together to make a positive contribution to addressing today’s most pressing issues, including through climate finance and investment. I sincerely thank our host country partners, the Ministry of Economy and the Government of Abu Dhabi, for offering to host the forum.”
