Lebanon, Algeria sign deal on criminals extradition, judicial cooperation

Lebanon and Algeria have signed two legal agreements on the extradition of criminals and judicial cooperation in the criminal field…reports Asian Lite News

The agreements constitute “a fruitful beginning of cooperation to boost ties between the two countries,” Lebanese Justice Minister, Henri Khoury said on Saturday, adding “future bilateral agreements will develop for the benefit of the two countries.”

For his part, Algerian Justice Minister, Abdul Rashid Tabbi said the signed agreements provide a comprehensive framework that will protect the two countries from criminal threats, Xinhua news agency reported.

Tabbi also called for Arab justice Ministries to finance a fund created for the support of Lebanese judges amid the current economic crisis in the country.

Algerian, French President talks after months of diplomatic tension

According to a statement issued by the Algerian presidency, the two sides “discussed bilateral cooperation and the prospects of convening the higher intergovernmental committee” which had been scheduled for last April, but was postponed due to the mounting diplomatic tension between the two sides, reports Xinhua news agency.

According to the statement, the French president Penewed the invitation for his Algerian counterpart to attend the sixth European Union – African Union summit, which will be held in Brussels on February 17 and 18.

The French-Algerian ties have been characterized by diplomatic riffs in recent months since Algeria recalled its Ambassador to France and closed its airspace to French military planes in October 2021.

The move was a response to a French decision in September 2021 to reduce the number of visas provided to Algerian officials by 50 per cent as well Macron’s critical remarks on Algeria.

Egypt, Algerian Presidents discuss bilateral ties, regional developments

Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi and his visiting Algerian counterpart Abdelmadjid Tebboune discussed the means of boosting bilateral relations as well as the latest regional developments…reports Asian Lite News

“The consultations reflected the common political will toward strengthening and promoting the distinguished relations between the two countries,” the Egyptian Presidency on Tuesday said in a statement.

The two leaders on Tuesday exchanged views on common challenges, including achieving comprehensive development, confronting external interference in the region, and combating terrorism and extremist ideology, it added.

They agreed to push forward cooperation in the economic, investment and trade fields, and further intensify exchanges in the area of combating terrorism in all forms, it said.

They called for adopting a comprehensive approach by the international community to confront terrorism, defeat any attempt to attract or recruit new terror elements, and eliminate sources of financial support to extremists, the statement added.

The meeting also touched upon the latest developments in the Arab arena and efforts to advance the joint Arab action, so as to preserve Arab national security and protect the unity and sovereignty of the Arab countries, Xinhua news agency reported.

On Libya, the two leaders reached consensus on the necessity of holding presidential and parliamentary elections in Libya simultaneously and withdrawing all foreign forces, mercenaries and foreign fighters from the country without exception within a specific time frame.

During the meeting, Tebboune praised Egypt’s efforts to reach a comprehensive and equitable agreement on the rules of the filling and operation of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, which has caused a tense dispute between Ethiopia and two downstream countries of the Nile river, including Egypt and Sudan.

Palestine and Algeria to resume reconciliation dialogue

Leaders of rival Palestinian parties and Algerian officials started a meeting on resuming reconciliation dialogue in Algiers, officials said…reports Asian Lite News

The officials said that leaders of the Fatah party and the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) met with Algerian officials to prepare for a Palestinian national dialogue that will later include leaders of other factions, reports Xinhua news agency.

Fayez Abu Eitta, Palestine’s ambassador to Algeria, told the Palestinian official agency (WAFA) that the Fatah delegation was headed by Azzam al-Ahmad, a member of the Executive Committees of the Palestine Liberation Organization and Fatah Central Committee.

Meanwhile, Hamas movement in Gaza said in a press statement that its delegation included two members of its political bureau, Khalil al-Hayya, and Hussam Badran.

The two rival Palestinian factions were invited by Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to visit Algiers.

The Palestinian division began in 2007 following Hamas’s violent takeover of the besieged Gaza Strip, routed the security forces of President Mahmoud Abbas and cracked down on his Fatah Party.

The two movements have formerly engaged in numerous discussions with Arab countries, including Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar, in a bid to reach a comprehensive reconciliation agreement.

However, all the mediation efforts have failed so far.

“These partnership agreements concern a wide range of areas, including justice, public institutions, communication, media, industry and SMEs, environment, foreign trade, culture, religious affairs, energy, vocational training, fishing, employment, childhood, the elderly, youth, sports, education and health,” said a statement released by the Tunisian presidency on Wednesday.

During a joint press conference, the Tunisian and Algerian Presidents indicated the convergence of respective visions on a number of regional and international issues, including the Libyan file, Xinhua news agency reported.

The situation in Libya “cannot be stable unless the solution stems from the Libyan people,” Saied said.

For his part, the Algerian President indicated that his position coincided with his Tunisian counterpart, and on the other hand he expressed his hope that Libya would get rid of mercenaries and all foreign forces so that harmony could return among various factions.

Palestine PM: Algeria grant $100 million to support alliviate financial crisis

Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammed Ishtaye has said that Algeria’s grant of $100 million to support the Palestinian Authority’s budget will help ease the financial crisis it is going through…reports Asian Lite News

In a press statement sent to Xinhua, Ishtaye on Tuesday said that Algeria’s support will alleviate the financial crisis that the Palestinian treasury suffers from Israel’s illegal withholding of the tax revenue dues and the sharp decline in international donations.

He expressed his gratitude to Algeria’s President, government, and people for providing financial support and granting scholarships to Palestinian students in Algerian universities.

“We are confident that the Palestinian cause will be a top priority for the upcoming Arab summit in Algeria, which is keen on Palestine and its unity,” said Ishtaye.

At a joint press conference with visiting Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Monday, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune said that Algeria decided to grant Palestine a financial contribution of $100 million.

“After consultations with my brother (Palestinian President) Mahmoud Abbas, Algeria will soon host an inclusive meeting that would gathers all Palestinian factions,” Tebboune told reporters in Algiers.

Algeria and Palestine are bound by strong relations, said Tebboune, stressing “the Algerian government and people support and defend the sacred Palestinian cause in all international and regional forums”.

He further pledged to allocate $100 million to Palestine in accordance with the relevant resolutions of the Arab League, as well as university scholarships for 300 Palestinian students.

The Algerian head of state indicated that the Palestinian issue will be on the top agenda of the forthcoming Arab League summit scheduled for next March in Algiers.

He further urged to endorse the Arab Peace Initiative proposal adopted by the Arab League in 2002 at the Beirut Summit for a sustained resolution of the Arab-Israeli conflict.

Abbas started on Sunday a three-day visit to the North African nation.

During the tour, His Highness was briefed on the components of the Algerian pavilion, which under the theme of ‘Voyage of Life’ showcases the country’s heritage and history and its vision for the future.

The Pavilion, located in the Mobility District at Expo 2020 Dubai, features a golden lattice gateway symbolising a portal to Algeria’s culture, history and future. The Pavilion is modelled on the ‘casbah’ or white fortress buildings found in the city of Algiers.

His Highness was also briefed on the major projects currently being implemented in Algeria, mainly in the renewable energy sector, which holds immense potential for growth especially in solar and wind energy. His Highness also learned about Algeria’s various natural resources and infrastructure projects.
