World’s first low-carbon aluminium in iPhone SE

Apple said it intends for the material, produced by using hydropower, to be introduced in the iPhone SE…reports Asian Lite News

Tech giant Apple intends to use the world’s first low-carbon aluminium in iPhone SE, the company announced on Thursday.

With the help of $4.7 billion investments in green bonds, Apple could jump-start the development of new low-carbon manufacturing and recycling technologies, the company said in a statement.

Since 2016, Apple has issued three Green Bonds aimed to accelerate progress toward the company’s goal to become carbon neutral across its supply chain by 2030.

As part of this work, Apple announced it is purchasing direct carbon-free aluminium from Canada-based ELYSIS – the company behind the world’s first direct carbon-free aluminium smelting process.

The aluminium is the first to be manufactured at industrial scale outside of a laboratory without creating any direct carbon emissions during the smelting process. The breakthrough technology produces oxygen instead of greenhouse gases, and the achievement marks a major milestone in the production of aluminium, one of the world’s most widely used metals.

Apple said it intends for the material, produced by using hydropower, to be introduced in the iPhone SE.

“Apple is committed to leaving the planet better than we found it, and our Green Bonds are a key tool to drive our environmental efforts forward,” said Lisa Jackson, Apple’s vice president of Environment, Policy, and Social Initiatives, in the statement.

“Our investments are advancing the breakthrough technologies needed to reduce the carbon footprint of the materials we use, even as we move to using only recyclable and renewable materials across our products to conserve the earth’s finite resources,” she added.

This revolutionary advancement in aluminium production was spurred by Apple through an investment partnership with Alcoa, Rio Tinto, and the governments of Canada and Quebec that began in 2018.

The following year, Apple purchased the first-ever commercial batch of aluminium resulting from the joint venture, using it in the production of the 16-inch MacBook Pro. ELYSIS is a joint venture between Alcoa and Rio Tinto.

Apple has also made significant progress in reducing the carbon impact of aluminium and other metals found in its products. By switching to recycled aluminium and aluminium smelted using hydroelectricity instead of fossil fuels, the company’s carbon emissions associated with aluminium have decreased by nearly 70 per cent since 2015.

Every model in the iPad lineup, including the new iPad Air, along with the latest MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, Mac mini, and Apple Watch, are made with a 100 per cent recycled aluminium enclosure, the company said.

AYYA T1: Russian’s alternative to iPhone

The main feature of the mobile phone is a separate hardware button to turn off the cameras and microphone to avoid surveillance…reports Asian Lite News

Russia is urging its citizens to switch to domestic smartphone AYYA T1 after American multinational technology giant Apple Inc announced earlier this week its decision of pausing all product sales in the country in response to Moscow’s military operation in Ukraine.

Refusing to use the iPhone, Russian State Duma deputies Maria Butina and Denis Maidanov are now urging their fellow parliamentarians to use AYYA T1 smartphones developed by local company Smartecosystem, a subsidiary of the Scale Research Institute, part of the Rostec state corporation.

In a video which has now gone viral on Russian social media, Butina who was jailed in the United States in 2018 and labelled as a foreign agent before being deported to Moscow, called on her fellow parliamentarians to abandon the iPhone and switch to AYYA T1.

“You know what, good gentlemen from Apple, but go through the woods! And you, my dears, become an eyewitness of the first contact of the deputy with the domestic smartphone AYYA T1,” Butina said in an Instagram post.

The main feature of the mobile phone, reported CNews – one of the largest high-tech publication in Russia and the CIS countries – last year, is a separate hardware button to turn off the cameras and microphone to avoid surveillance.

“So, baby Aya [AYYA] is the most reliable phone from prying eyes and ears! Let’s break through, comrades. Don’t even worry. And it wasn’t like that,” Butina wrote.

Butina added that the phone, which costs between 15 to 19 thousand rubles, will soon switch to the Russian-made Aurora from the mobile Android OS.

Established in 2007 by Russian President Vladimir Putin, Rostec developed innovative products, including military technologies, to become one of Russia’s most affluent brands over the course of next 10 years.

In 2019, as part of its military and technical cooperation, Rostec premiered on the world scene its state-of-the-art Tornado-S Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS), Pantsir-ME anti-aircraft missile and artillery system, and the new AK-12 assault rifle. Its aviation products include Irkut MC-21 airliner, jet fighter Sukhoi Su-57 and transport helicopter Mil Mi-38.

Apple completes key production tests for AR/VR headset

The report added that the headset is expected to debut by the end of 2022…reports Asian Lite News

Cupertino based tech giant Apple has reportedly completed key production tests for its long-rumored augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) headset.

According to DigiTimes, the device has completed second-phase engineering validation tests (EVT 2) to ensure that prototype units meet Apple’s design goals and specifications.

The report added that the headset is expected to debut by the end of 2022.

The headset would come with multiple highly sensitive 3D sensing modules in order to offer innovative hand tracking.

The structured light sensors can detect objects in the hands, comparable to how Face ID is able to figure out facial expressions to generate Animoji.

The headset will focus on gaming, media consumption, and communication.

It will have two processors, one with the same level of computing power as M1 along with a lower-end chip to handle input from different sensors.

The headset may come with at least six-eight optical modules to simultaneously provide continuous video see-through AR services. The device is also said to have two 4K OLED microdisplay from Sony.

The upcoming Apple headset will be similar to the Oculus Quest, and some prototypes being tested include external cameras to enable some AR features.

It may feature at least 15 camera modules, eye-tracking, possibly iris recognition, and could cost between $2,000 and $3,000.

The AR headset is expected to sport a sleek design so that it is lightweight and comfortable for the wearer to roam around for prolonged periods.

Apple updates ‘vintage product’ list to add iPhone 6 Plus

Apple has continued on with the multi-size release strategy since the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus launch…reports Asian Lite News

Tech giant Apple has updated its list of vintage and obsolete products to add the iPhone 6 Plus, as it has been more than five years since the device was last offered for sale.

The iPhone 6 Plus was first released in September 2014 alongside the iPhone 6, and it was discontinued in September 2016 following the launch of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, reports AppleInsider.

The iPhone 6 Plus’ sister phone, the iPhone 6, is not on the vintage list at this time as it was available for sale for a longer period of time.

Apple relaunched the iPhone 6 in 2017 as a midrange iPhone, and it was available for purchase until September 2018, so for that reason, it will be another two years or so before it is designated as a vintage product, the reoport said.

The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus were notable for being the first devices to offer support for Apple Pay and for marking the first year that Apple offered the iPhone in multiple size options.

Apple has continued on with the multi-size release strategy since the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus launch.

The vintage products list features devices that Apple stopped distributing for sale more than five years ago and less than seven years ago. Apple provides service and parts for vintage devices for up to 7 years, or as required by law, but repairs are subject to parts availability.

Apple stopped supporting the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus with software updates back in 2019 with the launch of iOS 13.

5G iPhone SE 3 to launch in March

The new iPad Air will have the same overall design as the current model, including a single-lens rear camera…reports Asian Lite News

Apple suppliers have reportedly started production of new fifth-generation iPad Air and third-generation iPhone SE.

According to the Japanese blog Mac Otakara, the new iPhone SE will retain the same chassis design as the current model released in 2020, and the device will apparently continue to lack support for MagSafe accessories.

The new iPad Air is also expected to launch with Apple’s A15 Bionic chip, a 12MP Ultra-Wide front camera with Center Stage, Quad-LED True Tone flash, and 5G support on cellular models.

The new iPad Air will have the same overall design as the current model, including a single-lens rear camera.

One can also expect the same 10.9-inch display with slim bezels, a USB-C Port, Touch ID embedded on the power button.

Both the new iPad Air and iPhone SE models are expected to be announced on March 8.

In addition, the iPhone maker may also launch a redesigned 27-inch iMac with a mini-LED display for release in the first half of 2022. The new 27-inch iMac is expected to support ProMotion.

Apple plans to launch new high-end Mac mini

Panel shipments for the iMac Pro are expected to begin in June, and a release could follow in August or September…reports Asian Lite News

Tech giant Apple is reportedly planning to launch a new high-end Mac mini at an event in the spring.

According to MacRumors, the release date rumour comes by cross-referencing recent reports from display analyst Ross Young and Mark Gurman, both of whom often provide accurate insights into Apple’s plans.

In December 2021, Young said that a new iMac Pro model with a mini-LED display was going to launch in the spring, and Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman also floated the possibility of this machine being announced at a spring event, likely in March or April.

Gurman’s latest report claimed that Apple’s spring event will focus on the iPhone SE with 5G connectivity, a refreshed version of the iPad Air with an updated A-series chip, and at least one new Mac powered by Apple silicon chips, the report said.

He suggested that this Mac might be either the new mini-LED iMac or the Mac mini, it added.

Now, Young said that he no longer expects the new iMac Pro to launch in the spring, with a “summer” launch seeming more likely for the high-end all-in-one device.

Panel shipments for the iMac Pro are expected to begin in June, and a release could follow in August or September.

Apple has been rumoured to be working on a Mac mini to replace the Intel-based models that are still in the product lineup for some time.

Apple updated the entry-level Mac mini with the M1 chip in November 2020, but the high-end offering is still the Space Gray model with an Intel processor from 2018.

It is this high-end model that is expected to be replaced this year with an Apple silicon model that features the first redesign since 2010.

The new device is expected to feature the M1 Pro and M1 Max chips from the MacBook Pro, up to 64GB memory, four Thunderbolt ports, a design with a “plexiglass-like” top, and more.
