Fears growing Belarus could soon join war in Ukraine to help Putin

Russian troops attempting to take Kyiv early in the war had advanced on the city from Belarus, and missiles which devastated the capital were fired from there…reports Asian Lite News

Fears that Belarus could soon be forced to join the Ukraine war are growing after military vehicles were seen with ‘combat symbols’ painted on them, media reports said.

State TV footage of armoured vehicles taking part in snap ‘combat readiness’ drills near Ukraine’s borders showed they have red squares painted on them, which would allow drivers to recognise each-other during actual combat, Daily Mail reported

President Alexander Lukashenko has so-far avoided throwing his army into the fighting in Ukraine, but has allowed Belarusian territory to be used for attacks.

Russian troops attempting to take Kyiv early in the war had advanced on the city from Belarus, and missiles which devastated the capital were fired from there.

Pressure is thought to have been growing on Lukashenko to commit his forces to the fight after Russia began placing more of its own troops on his territory in September, Daily Mail reported.

But he is hesitating – likely because he fears that his army, a shadow of its Russian counterpart, would be mauled in the fighting.

Since control of the military is vital to maintaining control of the country, that could spark a serious challenge to Lukashenko’s rule – coming just two years after he narrowly survived the last popular uprising.

Throwing Belarusian troops into the fight would likely change little in the long-term, but could open up short-term tactical advantages for Putin with the battle currently at a stalemate.

Moscow has been forced to resort to long-range missile attacks on Ukraine’s power and heating network with its forces at a near-standstill on the battlefield, with a fresh wave of drones sent at Kyiv.

New sanctions against Russia, Belarus target $2 billion worth of trade

The British government specified that Russia is one of the leading platinum and palladium producing countries and that its related imports to the United Kingdom had been significant…reports Asian Lite News

The United Kingdom is introducing a new package of sanctions against Russia and Belarus, targeting a total of $2 billion worth of trade, the British government said.

“The UK is today announcing a new package of sanctions on Russia and Belarus targeting £1.7 billion ($2 billion) worth of trade in a move designed to further weaken (Russian President Vladimir) Putin’s war machine,” the British government said in a Sunday statement.

The release specified that the new restrictions will bring the total value of products subjected to full or partial import and export sanctions since the start of Russia’s special military operation in Ukraine to more than 4 billion pounds.

“The new import tariffs will cover Pound 1.4 billion worth of goods – including platinum and palladium,” the UK government said, adding that “the planned export bans intend to hit more than Pound 250 million worth of goods in sectors of the Russian economy most dependent on UK goods, targeting key materials such as chemicals, plastics, rubber, and machinery.” This is about 10 per cent of the total UK export to Russia as of 2021.

The British government specified that Russia is one of the leading platinum and palladium producing countries and that its related imports to the United Kingdom had been significant.

The new restrictions are the third wave of trade sanctions that the United Kingdom has imposed against Russia. Excluding gold and energy, about 96 per cent of imports from Russia to the UK and over 60 per cent of British exports to Russia are now under restrictions, according to the UK government.

FIDE suspended Russia, Belarus from tournaments

The chess federation of Ukraine, as per reports, has called for a ban of all Russian players and Russians from the FIDE elections…reports Asian Lite News

The International Chess Federation or FIDE on Wednesday suspended Russian and Belarus national teams from participating in official FIDE tournaments until further notice.

With this, the FIDE put an end to the uncertainty of participation of the strong Russian chess team in the upcoming 44th Chess Olympiad to be held in Chennai in July-August 2022.

India as the host country can field two teams, and if the number of entries are in odd numbers, the host nation can field one more team.

In a statement the FIDE said: “Taking into account the current recommendations of the IOC (International Olympic Committee), the FIDE Council suspends the national teams of Russia and Belarus from participation in official FIDE tournaments until further notice.”

“In the individual tournaments of the FIDE World Championship cycle, players from these countries will be able to participate under the FIDE flag,” FIDE added.

Earlier, a senior FIDE official had told preferring anonymity: “The Russian team probably may not come.”

With the West against Russia and FIDE cancelling its sponsorship agreements with Russian and Belarusian companies, participation of the Russian team might have resulted in several countries boycotting the event if the geopolitical situation does not improve by July.

The chess federation of Ukraine, as per reports, has called for a ban of all Russian players and Russians from the FIDE elections.

In 1976, the Soviet Union and some other countries did not participate in the Olympiad due to political reasons.

The Russian team won the bronze in the last Chess Olympiad held at Batumi, Georgia. Russia has won the Olympiad gold eight times, besides winning the silver and bronze thrice each.

Meanwhile, Bharat Singh Chauhan, the Tournament Director for the Chess Olympiad who’s also the Secretary of the All India Chess Federation (AICF), said around 3,000 hotel rooms have already been booked along the East Coast Road for the players and others coming for the mega chess event.

The Olympiad venue will be the convention centre at the Four Points by Sheraton, located in the Mahabalipuram area, one of the main tourist destinations in southern India.

According to Chauhan, India as the host country can field two teams and if the number of entries are in odd numbers, the host nation can field one more team.

All the Indian teams — Open, Women and additional team(s) — will be selected based on ELO ratings, Chauhan added.

Irai Anbu, the Chief Secretary of Tamil Nadu, the host state, said the government will render necessary assistance to AICF when queried about the state’s financial involvement in the event.

According to AICF President Sanjay Kapoor, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will be signed between the AICF and the Tamil Nadu government in connection with the Chess Olympiad.

The FIDE on Tuesday approved the bid offered by the AICF to host the mega biennial event that would see about 190 nations competing for top honours. The AICF had suggested Chennai as the venue.

“Around 2,500 persons — chess players, coaches, team managers and chess officials from different countries, journalists and others — will arrive in the city where the Chess Olympiad is held,” British Grandmaster and FIDE Vice-President Nigel Short had said earlier.

Giant firms ceased operations in Russia and Belarus

Deloitte employs 3,000 people, while EY has 4,700 employees in Russia. EY said the decision was heartbreaking…reports Asian Lite News

The big four consulting firms — Deloitte, KPMG, EY and PwC — have announced they were ceasing operations in Russia and Belarus over Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.

A spokesperson for KPMG International said that they have a responsibility, along with other global businesses, to respond to the Russian government’s ongoing military attack on Ukraine.

“As a result, our Russia and Belarus firms will leave the KPMG network. KPMG has over 4,500 people in Russia and Belarus, and ending our working relationship with them, many of whom have been a part of KPMG for many decades, is incredibly difficult,” said the spokesperson.

PwC said in a statement that as a result of the Russian government’s invasion of Ukraine, “we have decided that, under the circumstances, PwC should not have a member firm in Russia and consequently PwC Russia will leave the network”.

“We are also committed to working with our colleagues at PwC Russia to undertake an orderly transition for the business, and with a focus on the wellbeing of our 3,700 colleagues in PwC Russia,” said the company.

Deloitte employs 3,000 people, while EY has 4,700 employees in Russia. EY said the decision was heartbreaking.

“In light of the escalating war, the EY global organization will no longer serve any Russian government clients, state-owned enterprises or sanctioned entities and individuals anywhere in the world. EY has commenced a restructuring of its Russian member firm to separate it from the global network,” said the company.

“We continue to support our 700 EY colleagues with financial support, relocation, transportation and immigration services,” it added.

Earlier, fintech and digital payments giants like MasterCard, Visa and PayPal have announced to exit the region.

Russia, Ukraine to hold 2nd round of talks

Russia’s military has established a safe corridor to allow the Ukrainian delegation to move through Ukrainian territory, said Russian Official…reports Asian Lite News

A new round of talks between Russia and Ukraine is expected to take place on Thursday in Belovezhskaya Pushcha on the Belarus-Poland border, as Moscow’s military assault continued on Kiev for the eighth day.

Russian presidential aide Vladimir Medinsky said the delegation headed by him arrived at the negotiating site Wednesday evening, reports Xinhua news agency.

The Ukrainian side is expected to arrive on Thursday, Medinsky said, adding that Moscow and Kiev agreed upon the location for the new round of talks.

Russia’s military has established a safe corridor to allow the Ukrainian delegation to move through Ukrainian territory, he said.

The possibility of a ceasefire, among other things, would be discussed during the talks, according to the official.

However, David Arakhamia, parliamentary faction leader of the Party of Servant of the People in Ukraine, said on Facebook that “information that the talks will be held in Belovezhskaya Pushcha is not true. Indeed, the talks will take place, but in another venue. All details will be provided later”, the Interfax news agency reported Thursday.

The first round of negotiations between Russia and Ukraine concluded on Monday with no clear breakthrough.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said on Facebook that Kiev was ready to negotiate, but would not comply with “Russian ultimatums”.

Kuleba and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken discussed new sanctions against Russia and a new supply of defensive weapons for Ukraine in a phone conversation on Wednesday.

Kuleba emphasized that Ukraine is committed to finding diplomatic ways for settling the conflict with Russia, but Kiev’s allies must show unity in increasing pressure on Russia “until Moscow demonstrates its readiness for constructive negotiations”.

On the same day, Russian President Vladimir Putin held several telephone conversations on the situation in Ukraine with foreign leaders, including Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett.

The Russian Defence Ministry announced on Wednesday that 498 servicemen have been killed in the course of the “special military operation” in Ukraine, while around 3,700 Ukrainian servicemen have been injured and 2,870 others died.

Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said 1,502 Ukrainian military facilities have been destroyed in the Russian operation.

Moldova next on Russia’s list?

Putin’s war-mongering sidekick addressed security officials Wednesday while standing in front of a battle map that seems to show a planned operation into Moldova…reports Asian Lite News

Belarussian President Alexander Lukashenko appears to have indicated Vladimir Putin’s forces have plans to invade Moldova, Daily Mail reported.

Putin’s war-mongering sidekick addressed security officials Wednesday while standing in front of a battle map that seems to show a planned operation from southern Ukraine into its tiny neighbour.

The map also showed proposed battle plans for Russian troops across the country.

It detailed Russian lines of attack heading into Ukraine, some of which have materialised in the first few days of the invasion — such as forces storming towards Kyiv from the north, and towards Kherson from Crimea, Daily Mail reported.

But they also showed off several attacks that have yet to come to pass — with one even appearing to point from the port city of Odessa into Moldova, suggesting Russia plans to march troops into Ukraine’s neighbour.

Meanwhile Putin’s military has suffered an embarrassing string of defeats while trying to carry out precision strikes on key targets in an apparent effort to win the war quickly and convincingly.

That has raised fears that he is now about to deploy Russian heavy armour and artillery in an attempt to brute-force his way to victory — a strategy that could cause huge civilian casualties.
