G20 environment group meeting concludes in Bengaluru

The first meeting of the ECSWG marks the beginning of constructive discussions within G20 countries for a sustainable future, led by India’s G20 presidency…reports Asian Lite News

The first G20 Environment and Climate Sustainability Working Group (ECSWG) meeting concluded in Bengaluru on Saturday on a positive note with all G20 countries showing interest and commitment to constructively work towards the objective of the three priority areas of Arresting Land Degradation, Accelerating Ecosystem Restoration and Enriching Biodiversity; Promoting a Sustainable and Climate Resilient Blue Economy and Encouraging Resource Efficiency and Circular Economy.

The first meeting of the ECSWG marks the beginning of constructive discussions within G20 countries for a sustainable future, led by India’s G20 presidency. The three-day meeting of the ECSWG from February 9 to February 11, 2023, was led by the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MoEFCC), Government of India.

Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change said in a statement that the meeting began with a side event centred around sharing of best practices for ecosystem restoration of forest fire and mining-affected areas followed by a visit to the Bannerghatta National Park and Kalkere Arboretum to showcase the forest ecosystems of Karnataka, ecosystem restoration and ecotourism models, as well as wildlife protection.

The second day started with an inaugural address by the Union Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs and Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Puri.

After that, the welcome address was delivered by Secretary, MoEFCC, Leena Nandan. She highlighted that India intends to address matters of environment and climate change through an action-oriented and consensus-driven approach.

“The ECSWG will work in close collaboration with other G20 key working groups to holistically address issues relating to environment, sustainability and climate change,” she said.

The discussions during the first half of the second day revolved around methods to restore land-based ecosystems affected by anthropogenic causes and enhancement of the Global Biodiversity Framework.

In the second half, discussions were held on the creation of circular economies in various sectors including steel and biowaste and the role of extended producer’s responsibility in the creation of a circular economy.

The idea of a G20 industry coalition for resource efficiency and the circular economy was also tabled.

The sessions saw the enthusiastic participation of delegates from all countries.

During this session, the Joint Secretary of the G20 Secretariat, Eenam Gambhir, made a presentation on the proposed High-Level Principles of LiFE and the Green Development Pact as potential deliverables, being steered by the Development Working Group.

A cultural event was organized in the evening to showcase the rich cultural heritage of Karnataka and provided a unique ‘India’ experience to the delegates who had arrived from 29 Countries.

The third and last day commenced with the session focusing on the theme of ‘Sustainable and Climate Resilient Blue Economy’.

The opening remarks were made by the Secretary, the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Dr M Ravichandran.

The Oceans and Blue Economy discussions covered a range of issues including marine litter, conservation and enhancement of coastal and marine ecosystems and marine spatial planning, over three meetings and one side event. The focus of discussions was on the problem of marine plastic litter and its adverse impacts.

The Presidency presented the inception report of the technical study on ‘Accelerating the transition to Sustainable and Climate Resilient Blue Economy’ that would cover all G20 Countries and provide inputs for the development of high-level principles on ‘Sustainable and Climate Resilient Blue Economy’.

It was also mentioned that Indian Presidency would publish the 5th report on actions against marine plastic litter under the G20 Framework for Marine Plastic Litter, in collaboration with Japan.

Delegates expressed support for actions for sustainable use of ocean resources, prevention of pollution and littering and for protection and enhancement of biodiversity.

These are critical for building resilience to climate impacts and maintaining the carbon sequestration potential of oceans, besides contributing to a thriving blue economy that would support the livelihoods of local coastal communities.

Towards the concluding session, it was highlighted that the Indian Presidency plans to convene an Ocean 20 dialogue to facilitate detailed discussion on important aspects of Blue Economy.

The Indian Presidency also announced a coordinated beach cleaning event to be conducted on May 21, 2023, on the sidelines of the Ocean 20 dialogue to emphasize the importance of action on marine litter and community participation.

The importance of LiFE (Lifestyles for Environment) Principles was highlighted, as behaviour changes to encourage the use of sustainable alternatives to single-use plastics, prevention of littering etc. would contribute to clean and healthy oceans.

The discussions during this meeting will be taken forward at the 2nd ECSWG meeting, scheduled for March 27-29, 2023, at Gandhinagar. (ANI)

‘Cryptocurrency is under discussion with G20 nations’

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Saturday that crypto is 99 per cent technology. It is “under discussion with G20 nations,” if all countries could achieve a standard operating procedure that will be effective while following a regulatory framework, she added.

Addressing a press meet after addressing the Central Board of Directors of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in the customary post-Budget meeting on Saturday, the Finance Minister said, “If regulation has to happen, then a different country alone cannot do anything. We are talking to all countries about whether we will be able to make any standard operating procedure. So that if everyone follows that path and we create a regulatory framework, will we be able to remain effective? All this is a topic in discussion. Discussions on this subject with the G20 countries are on.”

Responding to a question on the new income tax regime announced in the Union Budget 2023, the Minister said the simple step of trying to leave some money in the hands of the middle-class leads to a lot of inferences. “We had said earlier we will simplify and reduce income tax rates, that’s where it is,” the minister said.

RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das said that interest rates have just moved into positive territory, negative interest rates for a long period can create instability. “The annual export target of USD 400 billion will be achieved,” he added.

Responding to a question on the draft Bill for National Financial Information Registry (NFIR), the Governor said that draft NFIR Bill should be ready soon. The proposal for setting up a credit repository was discussed by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman at the meeting of the Financial Stability and Development Council in September.

Bengaluru top city on startup funding in 2022

Startups based in Delhi and Chennai registered $1.2 billion each in funding, followed by Pune at $1 billion..reports Asian Lite News

Bengaluru topped the startup funding chart in India with $10.8 billion in 2022, followed by Mumbai at $3.9 billion, and Gurugram at a distant $2.6 billion.

Startups based in Delhi and Chennai registered $1.2 billion each in funding, followed by Pune at $1 billion, according to data provided by Tracxn, a leading global market intelligence platform.

In 2021, Bengaluru-based startups had raised $20.8 billion in funding and Mumbai-based startups had pocketed $5.2 billion in the same year, showing the impact of the deepening funding winter last year.

There were 22 unicorns in 2022, compared to 46 in 2021, and average funding before the unicorn round was around $160 million.

It is now taking an average of 5.1 years from Series A funding to the Unicorn round for the Indian startups.

“India started experiencing funding winter in Q4 of 2021 and it has been on a declining trend since. Because of rising interest rates and fear of a worldwide recession, investments across all industries have been impacted,” said the Tracxn annual report.

The months of April, October and November in 2022 saw no new unicorns.

A total of 11 tech IPOs were launched in 2022, matching the number from the same period in 2021. Some of the major IPOs are Delhivery, Tracxn, eMudhra, among others.

LetsVenture, AngelList, and Y Combinator have topped the list of most active investors in 2022 to date, said the company.

Despite the impact on funding in edtech, Byju’s has topped the list of highest funding raised in 2022. It raised over $1.2 billion in 2022 from existing investors. This amounted to almost 50 per cent of the total funding received in the edtech sector.

Bengaluru Tech Summit targets 10K startups by 2030

Karnataka Digital Economy Mission (KDEM) held the ‘Beyond Bengaluru Tech Summit’ from Novermber 16-18 to bring out the current strengths of the emerging tech clusters and put together a strong road map till 2026….reports Asian Lite News

Even as the Bengaluru Tech Summit celebrates its 25th anniversary, the Karnataka government is looking beyond the capital city and moving aggressively to position emerging tech clusters from across the state on the digital global map.

Concerted efforts to drive anchor industries across the three clusters in Phase 1 with the help of the industry and academic partners are underway.

The ‘Beyond Bengaluru’ strategy envisages Mysuru as the hub for cybersecurity and ESDM, Hubballi-Dharward-Belagavi for agritech, ESDM, AI, and Mangaluru for Fintech and Healthtech sectors.

Karnataka Digital Economy Mission (KDEM) held the ‘Beyond Bengaluru Tech Summit’ from Novermber 16-18 to bring out the current strengths of the emerging tech clusters and put together a strong road map till 2026.

B.V. Naidu, Chairman, KDEM, spoke on the project’s recent milestones: “The past year has been filled with highlights as we catalysed several startups in conducive environments. We’ve overseen a GCC Spoke-Shore Strategy and startup grid initiative that saw around 33 companies begin/expand operations in Beyond Bengaluru clusters, generating employment for over 10,000 people.

“We launched future digital jobs in AI and cybersecurity in Mysuru, Hubballi, Dharward, Mangaluru, Kalaburagi and Belagavi with 2,000+ job opportunities. We will build on this and look to expand our vision, taking technologies and opportunities to other parts of Karnataka.

“Our academic and training partners are also geared up to meet the industry demand for skilled and employable workforce across the anchor sectors to start with. Plus, Beyond Bengaluru is a step in the right direction in our aim to drive 10,000 start-ups by 2030.”

The Karnataka Digital Economy Mission is a Section 8 organisation designed to function as the knowledge bridge between the government of Karnataka and the industry with a view of accelerating growth and investments in IT, BT and S&T sectors in the state.

KDEM is working towards getting all stakeholders together to achieve this goal. By 2030, Beyond Bengaluru will contribute 2.5 per cent of Karnataka’s GDP. The state will contribute more than $250 billion towards the digital economy goal of India by 2026, a KDEM release stated.

Sanjeev Gupta, CEO of Karnataka Digital Economy Mission, said, “KDEM’s focus is on promoting these clusters by maintaining constant dialogue between companies, investors, and the broader global ecosystem. Last 12 months we have got into 13+ industry MoUs to drive the Beyond Bengaluru mandate that will help us reach our 2026 goals. One of our key initiatives is the Start-Up Grida”that connects various tech-related start-ups across multiple sectors in the digital economy.

“We already have more than 400 start-ups on the grid, allowing each to access services like infrastructure and customised partner products. We are further planning to incentivise start-ups outside Bengaluru with cluster seed funds, dedicating INR 75 Cr towards all three clusters. We believe these positive actions will attract more investors and entrepreneurs with scalable ideas from both India and abroad.”

Bengaluru will remain not only as a city of technology but also country’s economic capital in the next five years, said Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai.

Union Industries & Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, IT/BT Minister Dr.C.N.Ashwath Narayana, Large & Medium Scale Industries Minister Murgesh Nirani, Start Up Vision Group Chairman Prashanth Prakash, Additional Chief Secretary (IT/BT) Dr.E.V.Ramanareddy, IT/BT Director Meena Nagaraj and others were present.

Karnataka’s polarising politics casts a shadow on Bengaluru

The loss of reputation of Bengaluru city at the global level is a matter of imagination, he underlined…reports M.K. Ashoka

Following a series of controversial incidents, fears are being expressed that the reputation of I-T hub Bengaluru city is getting hit at the global level. Karnataka, considered as the most favourable destination for investors, is seeing communal unrest.

Although Karnataka and especially its capital Bengaluru have witnessed violence, communal clashes and terrorist strikes in the past, never in its history has the state faced a similar situation. The growing demand for banning Muslim merchants from the temple premises, religious fairs, ‘halal’ meat, Muslim mango traders, artisans, transporters and drivers and banning the hijab by Hindutva forces has suddenly put the peaceful state under the spotlight for the wrong reasons.

The chain of events was triggered after Muslim organizations staged a protest opposing the verdict of the Karnataka High Court upholding the ban on the hijab in classrooms. The court had dismissed the petitions seeking permission to wear the hijab in the classrooms. The court had also observed that wearing of the hijab is not an essential practice.

Minister for IT-BT, Science & Technology, Skill Development, Entrepreneurship and Livelihood C.N. Ashwath Narayan stated that the IT and BT industry has not been affected by the developments in the state. “No company is going out of Bengaluru and there is no question that the supremacy of Bengaluru at the global level is harmed due to the recent communal polarization.”

The loss of reputation of Bengaluru city at the global level is a matter of imagination, he underlined.

Biocon Chief Kiran Majumdar-Shaw brought out the concerns of the IT-BT industry over the communal polarization in the state. “If IT-BT sector becomes communal, it would destroy our global leadership,” she had warned.

“Karnataka has always forged inclusive economic development and we must now allow such communal exclusion,” she stated on her social media. Shaw took to social media urging Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai to resolve this growing religious divide.

Analysts and litterateurs fear that the issue has created a deep communal divide in the society and have written a letter to Bommai in this regard. Muslim leaders have met the powerful and influential Pejawar Mutt seer seeking his intervention.

State Congress President D.K. Shivakumar has stated in the backdrop of communal developments that no one is bothered about assuring investors who are hesitant to invest in Karnataka by ensuring peace.

“In our state, peace is disturbed. The Andhra Pradesh government is pursuing the industrialists who are hesitant to invest in Karnataka to their state. At this juncture, including Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, none from the ruling BJP government are bothered about clarifying to the industrialists that they will ensure peace. CM Bommai is not opening his mouth on assuring people that he wouldn’t let industrialists go to other states and create job opportunities here,” he said.

Shivakumar stated that let the government conduct a survey on how many industries have gone to other states because of the developments encouraged by the ruling party in the state.

Opposition leader Siddaramaiah maintained that Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai is not only quiet but supporting all the developments taking place with a divisive agenda which will drive away global investors from the state.

The BJP government stated in the assembly that they can’t stop temple authorities from banning non-Hindu merchants from carrying out business inside the temple premises and religious fairs. Bommai said that investors are going nowhere and Karnataka is still on the top as far as Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) is concerned. “In the last three quarters highest FDI has come to Karnataka state. We have got 2.224 billion dollars in startups and theirs is 0.5. There is no comparison of the state with any other state of the country,” Bommai maintained.

Bengaluru is known as the centre of India’s high-tech industry. Karnataka continues its domination of being the number one state in the country in terms of software exports. The software export figures touched Rs 2 lakh crores for the first time in history.

Anupriya Patel, Union Minister of State of Commerce and Industry, informed the Rajya Sabha that Karnataka’s software exports for the year 2020-21 touched Rs 2,04,648.96 crores. Maharashtra, which comes second registered software exports at Rs 99,732.48 crores. Though much is hyped about the competition of Bengaluru with Hyderabad, the exports from Telangana state stood at Rs 71,574.19 crores.

The software exports from Karnataka have seen a steady growth in the past years Rs 1,41,846 crore (2016-17), Rs 1,52,280.16 crore (2017-18), Rs 1,69,699 .08 crore (2018-19) and Rs 1,94,473.28 crore (2019-20).

Doddabasavaraju, Managing Director, Karnataka Udyog Mitra, Bengaluru, told that the statements issued on investments going out of the state are wrong. The state is getting investments in all sectors and preparations are in full swing for the Global Investors Meet. After the unveiling of the logo, road shows are being planned. Industries are coming to Karnataka despite Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh offering free land, he said.

“Every industrialist will make mandatory visits to three to four states in the country and ultimately they are coming back to Karnataka. Since huge investments are coming, the state government is purchasing 22,000 acres of land in and around Bengaluru,” he said.

Bengaluru to evolve as major defence hub: Bommai

Bengaluru would evolve as a major hub of defence research and production, meeting the defence needs of not only India but of its friendly nations too, Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said on Thursday…reports Asian Lite News

Participating in a function to inaugurate the Flight Control System (FCS) Complex of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) here, he said that Bengaluru is home to over 180 R&D institutions of international level, and has highly competent and skilled manpower.

Apart from a defence hub and industrial hub, a semiconductor hub too would come up in Bengaluru, Bommai said and appealed to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh for all the support from the Union government and Defence Ministry to develop the defence hub which could meet not only defence needs of India, but of its friendly nations too.

“The nation is safe under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. Major developments are happening in the world and the world is looking up to India’s guidance. It is because of our strength in the defence sector. The research and innovations of DRDO would make the country stronger,” he said.

Lauding Rajnath Singh, Bommai said: “He will never compromise with anything related to the interests of India. Such a commitment is needed for a big country like India.”

Defence Minister has inaugurated the seven-storey building constructed by DRDO in record 45 days in Bengaluru, and said that earlier, Ministers could only lay the foundation stone for the projects, but could never get the opportunity to inaugurate it.

“There was a time when the minister who lay the foundation of a building could never inaugurate it because it was not possible, but today it is possible,” Singh said.

DRDO has built a seven-storey Flight Control System Integration complex in record 45 days which would be used as the Research and Development facility for the indigenous development of fifth-generation Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) in Bengaluru.

DRDO Chief G Satheesh Reddy were also present at the inauguration.

Singh said it is a unique project not just in the country but in the entire world and is an embodiment of the new energy of New India.

“This energy is of technology, commitment, institutional collaboration among public sector, private sector and academia and above all of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ as envisioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” he said, exuding confidence that the facility will go a long way in bolstering national security.

“The complex will also provide simulator training to the pilots of combat aircraft. Rajnath Singh described it as one of the most important components of the complex. The simulators provide an opportunity to learn by making mistakes without the possibility of any kinds of losses,” he stated.

During the interaction session with DRDO office bearers, he expressed hope that although the mandate of DRDO is to develop futuristic technologies, its spin-off benefits will be available to the civilian sector as well.

“Our traditional construction industry is generally considered to be labour intensive, high risk and low on productivity. But, the way DRDO has constructed the FCS complex through hybrid technology, our infrastructure projects will be completed in a low cost and time-bound manner in the times to come,” he said.

Rajnath Singh called upon DRDO to continue exploring new possibilities in construction technology and contribute to nation-building through new innovations. (with inputs from IANS/ANI)
