Warner powers Delhi to their 1st win

After a strong start, DC suffered a slump in run-rate as they scored 43 runs for the loss of three wickets in the middle overs…reports Asian Lite News

New Delhi, April 21 (IANS) An impressive show by bowlers followed by skipper David Warner’s vital fifty (57 off 41) guided Delhi Capitals their first win of the season, beating Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by four wickets in a rain delayed IPL 2023 match at Arun Jaitley Stadium, here on Thursday.

On the back of Axar Patel (2/13), Kuldeep Yadav (2/15) Ishant Sharma (2/19) and Anrich Nortje’ (2/20) superb show, DC bowled out KKR for paltry 127 in 20 overs. Jason Roy’s gritty innings of 43 off 39 and Andre Russell’s 38 not out off 31 were the saving grace for KKR, who lost wickets at regular intervals.

In reply, Warner gave DC a brilliant start, then KKR spinners turned the tables in the middle overs but eventually the hosts sealed the win with three balls to spare to open their account.

Chasing 128, Delhi were off to a strong start with skipper David Warner hitting 10 boundaries out of 12 in the powerplay. Varun Chakravarthy drew the first blood for KKR in the fifth over, trapping Prithvi Shaw for 13. Thanks to Warner’s hits, DC posted 61/1 in the powerplay.

After a strong start, DC suffered a slump in run-rate as they scored 43 runs for the loss of three wickets in the middle overs. After Anukul Roy’s economical over with just one run coming off the seventh over, KKR captain Nitish Rana removed Mitchell Marsh cheaply for 2 in the next over. Roy then joined the party as he dismissed Philip Salt for 5 in the ninth over.

Meanwhile, Warner brought up his fourth fifty of the season with a boundary off the bowling of Roy in the 11th over. A couple of overs later, Chakaravarthy bowled a maiden 14th over with a big wicket of set batter Warner, bringing an end to his 57-run innings.

Axar Patel and Manish Pandey smashed two boundaries, taking 11 runs off the 15th over and brought the equation to 30 off the last four overs. Then, DC lost two wickets in quick succession and the momentum shifted a little bit towards KKR.

Roy came into the attack in the 16th over, after a couple of wides, and a single, he claimed his second as he sent Pandey back to the hut for 21. Then, Rana cleaned up Aman Hakim Khan for a duck.

When 15 needed off 18, Axar survived an lbw twice against Chakravarthy, who gave away just three runs in the 18 over and the equation reached 12 off 12. Axar got lucky for the third time as survived a stumping from Liton Das in the penultimate over as he danced down and missed the line. The keeper whipped the bails off but he was back.

With 7 needed to win, Axar started the final over with a double. On the next ball he got two more on a no-ball. Axar then lofted between long-on and deep midwicket and collected two runs to seal the win for Delhi with three balls to spare.

Earlier, put into bat first, KKR lost three wickets within the powerplay. Ishant Sharma began the attack well, giving away just five runs off the opening over.

After conceding two boundaries to Jason Roy in the second over, Mukesh Kumar ended the over with a wicket of Liton Das, who went for a hook but got top edge towards the square leg and the fielder pouched it with ease.

An over later, Anrich Nortje sent last-match centurion Venkatesh Iyer back to the pavilion early for a duck. Then, Ishant dismissed skipper Nitish Rana cheaply for four and KKR ended the powerplay at 33/3, the lowest score in the first six overs this season.

After Marsh missed a caught bold opportunity in the eight over to dismiss Jason Roy, Axar Patel got Mandeep Singh in the next over. Halfway through the innings, KKR was 64/4.

Axar struck again In the 11 over as he claimed the big wicket of in-form batter Rinku Singh, who swept towards the deep square leg where Lalit Yadav did the rest. Ishant continued to pile the miseries as he dismissed Sunil Narine for 4, leaving KKR to 70-6 in 12 overs.

The wickets fell at regular intervals and pressure kept building on KKR with dot bowls, but Jason Roy stood firm to provide some pace to the innings before he fell to Kuldeep Yadav in the 15th over for 43. Kuldeep picked up his second on the very next ball, trapping impact player Anukul Roy in his googly. Then, Nortje got Umesh Yadav in the 16th over, reducing KKR to 96-9.

Meanwhile, Russell smashed straight onto Nortje’s ankle in the 18th over and the pacer seemed in pain. He was attended by the physios on the ground and completed his over.

Andre Russell hit back-to-back sixes in the last over bowled by Mukesh and got a few extra for KKR to fight. Russell went for a double in the last ball of the innings but Varun Chakravarthy got run out as KKR were bowled out for 127/10.

Brief scores: Kolkata Knight Riders 127/10 in 20 over (Jason Roy 43 off 39, Andre Russell 38 not out off 31; Axar Patel (2/13), Kuldeep Yadav (2/15) Ishant Sharma (2/19) against Delhi Capitals

Brief scores: Delhi Capitals 128-6 in 19.3 overs (David Warner 57, Manish Pandey 21; Varun Chakravarthy 2/16, Anukul Roy 2/19, Nitish Rana 2/17) beat Kolkata Knight Riders 127/10 in 20 overs (Jason Roy 43 off 39, Andre Russell 38 not out off 31; Axar Patel 2/13, Kuldeep Yadav 2/15, Ishant Sharma (2/19) by 4 wickets.

Mumbai thrash Capitals in last-ball thriller

The victory also means that Mumbai have got their first points on the board in the competition while Delhi faced their fourth consecutive loss of the tournament…writes Niharika Raina

Veteran leg-spinner Piyush Chawla and left-arm pacer Jason Behrendorff picked 3/22 and 3/23 respectively, while skipper Rohit Sharma was at his vintage best in a 45-ball 65, also his first half-century in the IPL after 25 innings, as Mumbai Indians beat Delhi Capitals by six wickets on the last ball of a thrilling match at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Tuesday.

The victory also means that Mumbai have got their first points on the board in the competition while Delhi faced their fourth consecutive loss of the tournament. Axar Patel and David Warner slammed contrasting fifties in Delhi’s 172 in 19.4 overs, while Anrich Nortje and Mustafizur Rahman were brilliant in their death overs bowling. But Tim David took Mumbai home on the last ball with Cameron Green giving him company.

Compared to Delhi’s 29/0, Mumbai had a blazing start by reaching 42/0 in their three overs. Rohit was at his vintage best, timing the ball well and picking the lengths very quickly in hitting two fours and a six in a 14-run opening over.

On the other hand, Ishan Kishan hit the ground running by smacking three boundaries through the off-side against Mustafizur. Nortje was smacked for two fours and a six, which Rohit elegantly whipped over wide long-on.

Rohit and Ishan took two boundaries each off Axar Patel and Lalit Yadav as Mumbai finished power-play with 68 for no loss, with the Mumbai captain being innovative in his reverse-sweep off the left-arm spinner.

The 71-run opening partnership came to an end when Ishan was run-out at the non-striker’s end in the eighth over. Rohit produced the shot of the match by pulling Nortje high over deep mid-wicket for six in the ninth over, before getting his fifty in 29 balls.

Tilak Varma got some applause from Rohit when he danced down the pitch to slam a fabulous lofted drive over long-off for six off Kuldeep Yadav. Rohit then ended the 12th over by sweeping Kuldeep hard through deep backward square leg for four.

Varma sliced Mukesh Kumar over backward point for four, followed by eye-catchy sixes over deep mid-wicket and extra cover, giving Mumbai an ideal start in the 16th over. But Mukesh bounced back by having Varma slogging straight to deep mid-wicket and Suryakumar Yadav hitting a short ball straight to fine leg for a golden duck.

Delhi produced a big twist came in the 17th over when Rohit sliced off Mustafizur and Abhishek Porel dived to his right to take a brilliant one-handed catch. With 18 needed off nine balls, Green and David slogged Mustafizur for a six each over deep mid-wicket and long-on, as 15 runs came off the 19th over.

David was dropped by Mukesh in the final over and after Delhi reversed an on-field wide call, two runs were needed off the final ball. David made a desperate dive for the second run and despite Porel taking off the bails, Mumbai were able to break their winless run in IPL 2023.

Earlier, Delhi were in trouble at 98/5 in 12.3 overs, and Axar walked in to smack 54 off 25 balls, hitting four fours and five effortless sixes in what was his first IPL fifty. Warner began well but struggled to accelerate and played an anchor role to make an unconvincing 51 off 47 balls. Delhi were undone by a bad finish as their last five wickets fell for just seven runs, with two balls left unused.

Prithvi Shaw looked good in his flowy drives, but fell to Hrithik Shokeen after sweeping straight to square leg. Warner initially nailed his pulls and slogs while being severe on anything having width from the bowlers. From the other end, Manish Pandey was great in his on-drives while using his feet well against spinners, and had some luck in edges going for boundaries.

Post the first time-out, Pandey danced down the pitch to loft off Chawla, but holed out to long-off in the ninth over. Yash Dhull’s IPL debut lasted four balls as his flick off the hips off a slower ball from Riley Meredith was caught by running deep mid-wicket. Chawla’s googly then trapped Rovman Powell plumb lbw.

Warner got a life in the 12th over as Chawla couldn’t hold on to his catch at mid-off and couldn’t effect a run-out despite a mix-up between him and Lalit Yadav. Chawla made up for the shelled chance by luring Lalit through flight and uprooting his leg-stump with a slower googly. Warner then nailed a slog-sweep off Chawla for four, before bringing up his half-century in 43 balls.

From the other end, Axar showed his fine touch with the bat by carting Shokeen for back-to-back inside-out sixes, before striking Green through cover and down the ground for a brace of fours.

Axar then smacked consecutive sixes over long-on off Behrendorff, second of which Suryakumar dropped and was hit on the face, walking off the field immediately. He took on Meredith by hooking through short fine leg for four, followed by smacking a six straight down the ground on a no-ball to get his fifty in 22 balls.

But Mumbai bounced back in the 19th over as Behrendorff had Axar holing out to deep square leg, Warner giving a top-edge to short third man and Abishek Porel miscuing to mid-off, apart from Kuldeep Yadav being run-out by mid-on. Meredith castled Anrich Nortje in the final over to make it the first time a side batting first has been bowled out.

Brief Scores: Delhi Capitals 172 in 19.4 overs (Axar Patel 54, David Warner 51; Piyush Chawla 3/22, Jason Behrendorff 3/23) lost to Mumbai Indians 173/4 in 20 overs (Rohit Sharma 65, Tilak Varma 41; Mukesh Kumar 2/30, Mustafizur Rahman 1/38) by six wickets

Gujarat Titans beat Delhi Capitals by 6 wickets

With 46 needed off the last five overs, it was anyone’s game till Gujarat tilted in their favour…reports Asian Lite News

Mohammed Shami and Rashid Khan picked three wickets each while B Sai Sudharsan slammed an impressive 62 not out with David Miller and Vijay Shankar playing crucial roles in Gujarat Titas’ defeating Delhi Capitals by six wickets in match seven of IPL 2023 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Tuesday.

On a pitch that had plenty of pace and bounce, Shami and Rashid picked 3-41 and 3-31 respectively while Alzarri Joseph dazzled with 2/29. In chasing 163, Sudharsan and Shankar played some good solid cricket in their 53-run partnership for the fourth wicket after losing three wickets in power-play.

The duo looked for boundaries while also rotating the strike at the same time. It meant that they were able to keep up with the run rate through risk-free cricket before Shankar fell in the 14th over.

With 46 needed off the last five overs, it was anyone’s game till Gujarat tilted in their favour. David Miller pulled Mukesh Kumar for six, and then lofted over wide long-on for the same result. He then ended the 16th over with a powerful drive through cover for four, as 20 runs came off it.

Sudharsan got his fifty in 44 balls with a delightful ramp off Anrich Nortje in the 17th over, followed by a massive swivelled six over fine leg. Miller then uppishly drove off Khaleel Ahmed for four in the 18th over, before finishing off the chase with 11 balls to spare.

Wriddhiman Saha got the chase off to a flier, punching and lofting impact player Ahmed for back-to-back boundaries, before ending the over with a superb pick-up shot for six. Shubman Gill welcomed Mukesh in the next over with two exquisitely-timed fours through the off-side.

Nortje struck on his first ball of the tournament, disturbing Saha’s with a scorching nip-backer in the third over, before uprooting Gill’s off-stump with another feisty delivery in his next over.

Sudharsan wowed everyone with his scoop off Nortje for six, before flicking Ahmed through mid-wicket for four. But the left-arm pacer signed off from power-play by forcing Hardik Pandya to play at a length delivery which he nicked behind to Abishek Porel.

Post power-play, Sudharsan survived a caught behind appeal off Kuldeep as replays showed flat line when the ball went past the bat. He joined forces with Shankar, the impact player, to get Gujarat’s chase back on track.

While Sudarshan made full use of width from Mukesh to drive him through extra-cover, Shankar produced some eye-catchy boundary shots, like lofting over Kuldeep’s head, pulling stylishly off Mitchell Marsh and Ahmed.

The 53-run partnership ended when Marsh trapped Shankar lbw and got the decision in his favour via DRS, as the crowd found its voice back. Miller survived an lbw off Kuldeep with replays showing the ball missing leg-stump in the 15th over. From there, Miller and Sudharsan took Gujarat home without any hiccups.

Earlier, Shami got some help from the pitch in an eventful opening over. An away swinger against Warner disturbed the off-stump, but the bail was unmoved. Though he also cut him in size, Shami was unable to find control, giving away seven wides.

Prithvi Shaw then took on Shami in his next over by flaying a cut over the slip cordon for four. But Shami had the last laugh by having Shaw caught on a pull at mid-on. The senior India pacer had more success with the new ball by castling Marsh.

A scratchy Warner got a move on when he slapped Shami through point for four, before pulling Pandya through the square leg for another boundary. He welcomed Joseph in the seventh over with a brace of boundaries – a smash over mid-off was followed by steering over backward point.

Just when it looked like Warner was set at the crease, he chopped on off Joseph in the ninth over. Joseph then dismissed Rilee Rossouw with a brute 146kph delivery that took the shoulder edge of an awkward fend and was caught brilliantly by diving backward point.

Debutant Porel looked good in his 11-ball 20, including pulling Yash Dayal over square leg for six after being hit on the helmet by a Joseph bouncer, before Rashid castled him in the 13th over.

With Sarfaraz Khan struggling to get going despite Josh Little dropping his catch in the 12th over, Axar injected some momentum with pull and drive off Rashid and Joseph for boundaries, followed by a stunning loft off the leg-spinner for six.

After sweeping off Rashid, Sarfaraz’s painful stay came to an end on the very next ball of the 17th over when he miscued a sweep to deep square leg. Aman Khan slog-swept Rashid for six, but sliced straight to extra cover off the leg-spinner.

But Axar continued to do some late-hitting for Delhi, lofting cleanly over long-off for six off Josh Little. In the final over, he brought out a lovely one-handed smash over wide long-on off Shami for six. But two balls later, in a bid to go big, A’ar sliced to deep cover. Anrich Nortje’s last ball four took Delhi to above 160.

Brief scores:

Delhi Capitals 162/8 in 20 overs (David Warner 37, Axar Patel 36; Rashid Khan 3-31, Mohammed Shami 3-41) lost to Gujarat Titans 163/4 in 18.1 overs (B Sai Sudharsan 62 not out, David Miller 31 not out; Anrich Nortje 2-39, Mitchell Marsh 1-24) by six wickets

RCB seal last playoff berth as MI beat Delhi Capitals

Royal Challengers Bangalore joined Gujarat Titans, Rajasthan Royals and Lucknow Super Giants in the playoffs…reports…Asian Lite News

Clinical batting by Ishan Kishan (48), Dewald Brevis (37), and a blazing 11-ball 34 by Tim David after a brilliant 3/25 haul by pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah helped Mumbai Indians end their IPL 2022 campaign with a five-wicket win that denied Delhi Capitals a place in the playoffs.

Delhi Capitals had to win the match so as to reach 16 points and deny Royal Challengers Bangalore the playoffs spot on better net run-rate while Mumbai were playing to restore some pride, here on Saturday.

Delhi Capitals were asked to bat first on a pitch that offered bounce to the seamers and landed in trouble soon as Bumrah claimed two wickets and Daniel Sams one as Delhi slumped to 31/3. They recovered to post a below-par score of 159/7 in 20 overs thanks mainly to Rovman Powell (43) and Rishabh Pant (39), who rescued the team with a 75-run partnership for the fifth wicket.

Chasing 160 to win, Mumbai rode on crucial knocks by Kishan, Brevis, and David as they reached 160/5 in 19.1 overs to record their fourth win and end on eight points, the same as Chennai Super Kings but were placed last in the table on net run rate.

Delhi Capitals slumped to their seventh defeat in 14 matches, finishing with 14 points, and fifth place in the table. But they had themselves to blame as they succumbed to nerves and some good bowling by Jasprit Bumrah as they got a sub-par score.

Royal Challengers Bangalore joined Gujarat Titans, Rajasthan Royals and Lucknow Super Giants in the playoffs.

With the pitch still offering something to the bowlers, Delhi had their chances and did manage to put Mumbai in a spot of bother, but some poor efforts in the field and some good batting by Kishan, Dewald Brevis (37) and Tim David (34) helped them reach the target with five balls to spare.

Ishan Kishan was the more aggressive of the Mumbai Indian openers as he struck two fours and a six in Anrich Nortje in the second over. But Rohit Sharma failed to click in the last match for Mumbai Indians as he got out for 2, caught by Shardul Thakur off Nortje.

Kishan and Brevis added 51 runs for the second wicket before Kishan got out, hitting three fours and four sixes in the process. Brevis blasted three sixes during his 33-ball 37 and added 50 runs for the fourth wicket with Tim David but was bowled by Shardul Thakur as Delhi tried to claw their way back into the match.

Tim David hammered four sixes and two fours during his 11-ball 34 to turn things towards Mumbai Indians again but his ouster from the middle, caught by Prithvi Shaw as he tried to flick a leg-stump yorker but only managed a leading edge. However, he had already done his job, dragging Mumbai to 145/4 in the 18th over, leaving them needing 15 ns off 14 deliveries.

Delhi players seem to lose their nerves as skipper Pant dropped a skier while their fielders made some silly errors in the outfield as Mumbai inched closer to the target.

Mumbai’s hopes rested on Tilak Verma and he was out off the last delivery of 19th over with Mumbai 155/5. Mumbai needed five runs off the last six deliveries but a no-ball by Khaleel Ahmad and a four by Ramandeep Singh off the resultant free-hit saw Mumbai Rohit Sharma’s side home,

Bumrah rattled them with two quick wickets and Daniel Sams claimed one, Delhi Capitals struggled in the power-play, reaching 37/3 after six overs.

Sams made the breakthrough for Mumbai Indians when he sent back the dangerous David Warner as his New South Wales statemate top-edged an attempted cut off a back-of-length delivery outside off-stump to Bumrah in the third over. Warner got out for five runs with Delhi on 21.

Bumrah then sent back Mitchell Marsh (0), getting the Aussie batter to edge one to Rohit Sharma at slip, with a delivery that landed in the corridor and moved slightly. Delhi slumped to 22/2.

It became 31/3 in the sixth over as Bumrah sent back Prithvi Shaw (24) with a superb bouncer that rose sharply from back-of-length and the batter was indecisive whether to play it or avoid it. By the time Shaw decided to take evasive action, the ball hit him on the gloves and Ishan Kishan completed a smart catch.

Brief scores: Delhi Capitals 159/7 in 20 overs (Rishabh Pant 39, Rovman Powell 43, Axar Patel 19 not out; Jasprit Bumrah 3/25, Ramandeep Singh 2/29) lost to Mumbai Indians 160/5 in 19.1 overs(Ishan Kishan 48, Dewald Brevis 37, Tim David 34, Tilak Varma 21; Shardul Thakur 2/31, Anrich Nortje 2/37) by 5 wickets.
