Dubai wins bids to host 175 int’l biz events in H1

The successful bids position the city to host several prestigious international conferences, congresses, and incentive meetings over the coming years…reports Asian Lite News

Business events continue to strengthen Dubai’s knowledge economy and contribute to tourism growth, with the city winning an impressive 175 bids in the first six months of 2024 to host events through 2024 and beyond. An increase of 24 percent compared to the same period last year, these bid wins are expected to bring more than 92,000 delegates, enhancing the pipeline of attendees for business events over the coming years.

The successful bids position the city to host several prestigious international conferences, congresses, and incentive meetings over the coming years, with an event win pipeline stretching into 2028. Spanning a wide range of sectors and professions, this achievement underscores the importance of business events to the Dubai Economic Agenda D33, which aims to double the size of Dubai’s economy over the decade leading up to 2033 and reinforcing its position among the world’s top three cities to visit, live and work in.

Dubai Business Events (DBE), part of Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism and the city’s official convention bureau, worked with stakeholders and industry experts, including Al Safeer Congress Ambassadors, to bid for and capture marquee business events. In addition to successful bidding activity, recent months have seen further global recognition for Dubai’s status as a leading business events hub. The International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) ranked Dubai the top city in the Middle East for the number of association meetings hosted in 2023, while Cvent ranked it number one in its ‘Top Meeting Destinations in the Middle East and Africa’.

Ahmed Al Khaja, CEO of Dubai Festivals and Retail Establishment, said, “In line with the vision and leadership of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, business events continue to play a critical role in driving tourism and economic prosperity. High-impact conferences, congresses and meetings not only boost economic progress, but also make vital contributions to Dubai’s burgeoning status as a knowledge hub, and centre of expertise across key sectors. This is aligned with the ambitions of the Dubai Economic Agenda D33, which envisions Dubai as a leading destination for business and leisure, and the best city to visit, live and work in.

“Associations, businesses and organisations around the world are increasingly recognising the power of hosting their meetings in Dubai, as demonstrated by the number of major international conferences secured by the city in the first half of 2024. Our vibrant calendar of upcoming events will bring together industry leaders, visionaries and delegates from all over the world, taking advantage of and feeding into our knowledge economy and propelling collective growth, and we look forward to welcoming them to Dubai.”

Dubai’s popularity as a destination for corporate and incentive events continues to surge as a direct result of its range of destination offerings that meet all budget requirements, a wide selection of international hotels, its world-class infrastructure and meetings facilities, and incredible accessibility. Events captured in the first half of the year for these segments include Modicare Advisors Incentive 2024, Vkusno i Tochka Convention 2024, World Agri-Tech Innovation Summit 2024, and OPPO Guangdong Mobile Communication Incentive 2025.

Dubai’s growing stature as a global association hub, as well as the rapid evolution of the city’s knowledge economy and focus on innovation, also resulted in decision-makers choosing the city for their major gatherings. Conferences and congresses captured in the first half of the year include The International Cotton Association Conference 2025, IFHNOS Summit 2025, WC A World Annual Conference 2025, and Rhinology World Congress 2028.

Through year-round engagement, close collaborations, and partnerships with hotels, events venues, Professional Congress Organisers (PCOs), Destination Management Companies (DMCs) and other service providers, DBE continues to attract the world’s most prestigious events and solidify Dubai’s position as a year-round global business events hub.

In the first half of 2024, DBE successfully concluded several sales missions in target markets and participated in major trade shows, including IMEX Frankfurt. It will also participate in the upcoming IMEX America (8th-10th October; Las Vegas) and IBTM World (19th-21st November; Barcelona). DBE continues to work closely with industry stakeholders to host meeting planners in Dubai for study missions that allow them to experience Dubai’s business events and tourism infrastructure and its rapidly growing knowledge economy.

These measures will enhance collaboration between public and private sector stakeholders, propelling Dubai towards its goal of achieving top global status for economic growth and becoming a prime destination for business, talent, and investment.”

An upward trajectory

In this context, Hamad Obaid Al Mansoori, Director General of Digital Dubai, said: “The upward trajectory of economic growth indicators across various sectors shows that Dubai, under its wise leadership, is confidently moving towards enhancing its economic leadership and investment attractiveness. This progress is supported by economic diversification and the adoption of the latest technologies and solutions, including digital transformation, which has made the emirate a destination for entrepreneurs and those interested in creating successful experiences. Dubai’s economy has always drawn its strength from flexibility, keeping pace with changes, and proactive thinking that anticipates major economic transformations in the world, most notably the digital economy supported by artificial intelligence and data.”

Data to support decisions

Younus Al Nasser, Chief Executive of the Dubai Data and Statistics Establishment, emphasised the importance of providing accurate data on various economic sectors and their total contribution to the emirate’s growth. This data supports the leadership’s decision-making process and the development of relevant strategies and policies that contribute to achieving the city’s goals in all fields, he said.

“The recent data showing Dubai’s economy has grown by 3.2 percent compared to the same period last year gives us an indication about the future of the emirate’s economy. Dubai has always positioned itself as a leading example in attracting investments mainly in emerging technologies, which represents the backbone that supports the development of all sectors,” he added.

No failures or potentially hazardous incidents were reported by any parties during the series of tests.

Additionally, Evocargo prepared a comprehensive report of trial results across two stages. In the second, the Evocargo N1 platform carried out freight transportation tasks on a standard route in a closed area.

The platform’s ability to respond to its surrounding environment in mixed traffic was extensively tested and met high validation standards.

In his comments, Mohsen Ahmad, CEO of the Logistics District – Dubai South, said, “We are proud of this groundbreaking milestone, which is a testament to Dubai South’s commitment to aligning with the wise leadership’s vision of establishing Dubai as a global logistics powerhouse. Our collaboration with Evocargo reinforced the UAE’s position in the industry and set a progressive stage for significant advancements within the regional logistics sector.

Ahmed Al-Ansi, CEO of Evocargo Autonomous Logistic Services, said, “The trials aim to attract new customers and investments in the GCC countries, which are on track for world leadership in innovative tech. We are proud to be a pioneer and one of the first commercial suppliers of cutting-edge services in cargo transportation based on our own electric unmanned vehicles.”

Dubai South and Evocargo agreed to carry out the UAE’s first autonomous electric vehicle trials in a memorandum of understanding signed in December 2022.

DMCC briefs WTO on Future of Trade Report

The report outlined how a new era of global regionalisation will lead businesses to restructure their supply chains amid escalating geopolitical tensions…reports Asian Lite News

DMCC – the world’s flagship free zone and Government of Dubai Authority on commodities trade and enterprise – briefed a select group of trade experts on its latest Future of Trade 2024 report at an event held at the World Trade Organisation headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.

The briefing featured high-level officials and regulators including WTO Director-General Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.

The report outlined how a new era of global regionalisation will lead businesses to restructure their supply chains amid escalating geopolitical tensions, conflicts, climate change, economic nationalism and trade protectionism. There will be opportunities to diversify export markets and sourcing networks.

DMCC recognised the role of the WTO in providing the open and stable global trading environment required to capitalise on new trade opportunities, and called on the WTO to provide leadership and innovation to meet new challenges to international trade. In particular, the rapid advances of technology such as AI and environmental goods trade to facilitate the green transition will present economic opportunities. In that regard, the WTO is needed to facilitate global consensus and standards to ensure trade resilience.

Addressing delegates, Ahmed Bin Sulayem, Executive Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, DMCC, said, “Since joining the WTO almost thirty years ago, the UAE’s relationship has developed from one of integration to participation, and now, one of leadership and influence. Through the adoption of the WTO’s Trade Facilitation Agreement, the WTO’s framework has played a strategic role in Dubai’s emergence as a global trade hub and a centre for finance, tourism and logistics, and therefore features prominently in our 2024 Future of Trade report. With over 75 percent of the global goods trade made directly on WTO terms, the world depends on an efficient WTO to ensure a fair trade landscape, especially as businesses contend with new disruptive forces like AI and climate change. Combined with the UAE’s growing Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreements (CEPAs), DMCC looks forward to continuing its engagement with the WTO and supporting greater global trade facilitation.”

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director-General of the WTO, said, “The Future of Trade report rightly highlights that amid all the challenges facing global trade in the decade ahead, there are also opportunities. Trade can deliver benefits to people and places that missed out on the recent wave of globalisation. It can be an even stronger force for decarbonising our economies; and for making supply chains more diversified and hence more resilient in our increasingly shock-prone world. At the WTO, we are working and reforming to build the enabling environment for seizing these opportunities. Recent successes with multilateral agreements and decisions at our 12th and 13th Ministerial Meetings provide the underpinnings needed by members to capitalise on emerging opportunities”.

Feryal Ahmadi, Chief Operating Officer, DMCC, added, “DMCC is delighted to be at the WTO in Geneva to present our Future of Trade 2024 report. During this period of profound change, it is essential that businesses, governments and regulators work together to harmonise standards and ensure innovative regulatory frameworks for today’s trade challenges. Here we believe the WTO has a key role to play in promoting and maintaining global trade stability, thereby sustaining trade resilience and economic growth in the long term.”

As part of the Future of Trade’s Commodities Trade Index, Switzerland rose to third place for the first time since the index was established in 2018. Switzerland scored strongly on its locational and institutional advantages, signalling its status as one of the most important players in the global commodities trade landscape. As major trade hubs, DMCC highlighted the growing interconnectivity of Switzerland and UAE across goods and services as key for ensuring future economic growth.

The Future of Trade is the flagship thought leadership report series from DMCC on the changing nature of global trade. The report examines the impact of global economic trends, geopolitics, technology, sustainability and finance on the future of the trade landscape. The report series has been viewed and downloaded over 1.9 million times to date, underscoring DMCC’s growing recognition as a leading voice on international trade.

Dubai’s longest public beach for eco-tourism

Extending 6.6 kilometres, the beach is poised to become a distinctive recreational destination that places a high priority on environmental preservation and the protection of local ecosystems and wildlife….reports Asian Lite News

In line with the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, to create the world’s best public beaches in the emirate, H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai, approved the Master Plan for the Jebel Ali Beach Development Project.

Extending 6.6 kilometres, the beach is poised to become a distinctive recreational destination that places a high priority on environmental preservation and the protection of local ecosystems and wildlife.

Sheikh Hamdan also approved the architectural designs for the project’s buildings and facilities, which feature a unique blend of aesthetics and functionality tailored for various beach activities.

The project features exceptional services, facilities, and public amenities. Offering a new eco-tourism experience, visitors to the beach can enjoy watching turtles in their natural habitat. Various measures and regulations will be put in place to protect turtles and provide them a safe nesting environment. These efforts align with the efforts of relevant bodies in the UAE to rescue, rehabilitate, and return turtles to their natural habitat and preserve the UAE’s rich marine environment.

Urban experiences

Sheikh Hamdan said, “Under the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, we are committed to developing the infrastructure and services needed to offer diverse urban experiences for citizens, residents, and visitors. Our focus is on creating spaces rich in beaches, open areas, and recreational greens. The ultimate goal is to enhance the well-being of the city’s people, create a healthy environment for all and make Dubai the world’s best place to live in.”

He added, “The Jebel Ali Beach Development Project is part of a broader master plan to develop public beaches in the emirate aimed at increasing the total length of beaches by 400%. This involves adding new public beaches, enhancing existing ones, and equipping them with new recreational, sports, aesthetic, and investment facilities as envisioned in the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan.”

First project of its kind in the UAE

Mattar Al Tayer, Commissioner-General for Infrastructure, Urban Planning, and Well-Being Pillar, said, “An open beach for the public and a site of global environmental importance, the Jebel Ali Beach Development Project is the first of its kind in the UAE. It is located within the Jebel Ali Wildlife Sanctuary, listed under the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance.

“The project aims to create a unique, attractive recreational beachfront with a strong emphasis on protecting the environment and supporting the emirate’s sustainability and eco-tourism goals. The beach’s development will ensure the preservation and enhancement of ecosystems and wildlife at the site, including enhancing turtle habitats and planting mangrove trees, which will contribute to blue carbon footprint growth and provide an open beach with minimal impact on ecological and biological systems.”

Unique ecosystem

Al Tayer added, “Jebel Ali Beach will be the longest public open beach in Dubai, stretching 6.6 km and covering an area of 330 hectares. The plan includes developing two areas: a 5 km sandy beach to be developed by Nakheel and a 1.6 km mangrove beach to be developed by Dubai Municipality. The area features a unique ecosystem due to the presence of mangrove trees, which enhance the sanctuary and provide habitats for many living organisms. The design of the area allows for optimal site utilisation, enabling the preservation of the ecosystem and enrichment of the visitor experience.

“The plan includes a 2 km open swimmable beach, a 2.5 km diving sports area, a walkway with viewing platforms to blend with the surrounding environment, and recreational and service areas for beachgoers of all ages, including kids play zones, sports and marine activity areas. The beach will be connected with integrated infrastructure, including a two-lane road in each direction, parking for 1,000 vehicles, 80 bicycle racks, a cycling track, and a 5 km running track,” Al Tayer said.

Three locations

Al Tayer said, “The beach will be divided into three locations: the Pearl (on the right side near the entrance of Palm Jebel Ali), a centre for beach and recreational activities with options for a lively family beach, sports activities, a swimming pool, kids play zones, a beach club with a pool and private beach for a fee, several restaurants, cafes, shops, and a floating restaurant in a unique location.

“The second site, named the Sanctuary, offers a haven for turtles and natural habitats. This area places the highest priority on environmental conservation and houses recreational and sports activities that enhance safe environmental exploration.

“The third site is the Nest (within the mangrove area), offering a recreational educational destination featuring a mix of educational initiatives and environmental conservation. It includes an environmental centre for studies and awareness of biodiversity, turtle rehabilitation and care programmes, and opportunities for visitors to learn about and help preserve the coastal ecosystem,” Al Tayer noted.

Architectural styles

“The architectural design of the buildings and facilities of the Jebel Ali Beach Development Project is inspired by a mix of natural geometry, drawing from shapes found in marine nature such as coral and turtle shells, as well as the Boho Syle, which uses elements and materials available locally. The buildings resemble the natural dunescape. The project offers several investment opportunities, such as restaurants, leisure centres, and commercial kiosks, to ensure maximum comfort for beachgoers and meet their various needs,” Al Tayer explained.

Al Mamzar and Jumeirah 1 Beaches

The Supreme Committee for Urban Planning and Quality of Life previously awarded contracts for the development of the Al Mamzar and Jumeirah 1 Beaches, extending 5.7 km in total (4.3 km at Al Mamzar Beach and 1.4 km at Jumeirah 1 Beach). The project involves extensive changes encapsulated in an integrated plan aimed at developing beaches and their infrastructure and transforming them into the most advanced and attractive in the world.

The development will add a new recreational tourism destination catering to the increasing number of beachgoers and water sports enthusiasts in the emirate. The project will provide exceptional services for residents, tourists, and visitors alike, making it one of Dubai’s top tourism destinations.

Unique model

A unique global model for beach design, the project will enhance the overall infrastructure capacity for beachgoers, and keep pace with the emirate’s population and tourism growth.
