EAM meets Ethiopian counterpart in Addis Ababa

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Thursday made a short transit visit to the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa and held talks with the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister of Ehiopia, Demeke Mekonnen Hassen.

Jaishankar took to Twitter to post about the “good meeting” and welcomed Hassen’s perspective on developments in the region. During the meeting, the two leaders shared views on “strong multilateral cooperation” between India and Ethiopia, including in the African Union and the United Nations.

The external affairs minister tweeted, “Welcomed his perspective on developments in the region. Also shared views on our strong multilateral cooperation, including in the AU and United Nations.”

Jaishankar, who concluded his visit to Uganda, is now travelling to Mozambique.

Jaishankar will visit Mozambique from April 13-15 and according to the Ministry of External Affairs this will be the first-ever visit by an External Affairs Minister of India to the Republic of Mozambique

In Mozambique, the EAM will meet with the country’s top leadership and co-chair the fifth Session of the Joint Commission Meeting with Mozambican Foreign Minister Veronica Macamo.

Jaishankar is expected to meet several other ministers and representatives of the Assembly of Mozambique. He will also interact with the Indian diaspora in Mozambique.

EAM Jaishankar recently concluded his Uganda visit. In a podcast of his recently concluded Uganda visit, Jaishankar said that India and Uganda have very converging perspectives which are based on the solidarity of the south-south cooperation between the two nations.

Jaishankar said that out of many conversations during his visit to Uganda, future cooperation between India-Africa, and especially India-Uganda was an important subject.

Terming the African nation of Uganda “noteworthy”, the External Affairs Minister in his podcast said that he has seen new intensity in interactions between New Delhi and Kampala and that even as India look towards the development side, it has a clear purpose with regard to expanding its economic interactions with the African country.

“When I came here to Kampala two days ago, I had the privilege of meeting President Museveni almost immediately. I had interaction with the minister of foreign affairs, and defence, the minister of trade, the minister of water resources and many of their colleagues,” Jaishankar said in the podcast that was posted on the external affairs ministry’s Twitter handle.

Marking a milestone in Indian-Uganda bilateral cooperation, Jaishankar inaugurated the first foreign campus of India’s National Forensic Sciences University in Jinja, Uganda on Wednesday. (ANI)

EAM, Lavrov to discuss developments in Ukraine

Russian Foreign Ministry on Tuesday said that the country’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will touch on a number of regional topics, including “developments in Ukraine” during Lavrov’s visit to India for the G20.  

“As part of the visit’s bilateral events, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar will discuss ways to further advance cooperation in key areas, as well as coordinate the schedule of upcoming contacts. The main thematic blocks include trade, investment, transport and logistics cooperation, the use of national currencies in mutual settlements, and promising projects in the energy sector.

“The ministers will exchange views on topical international matters, including interaction under India’s SCO chairmanship and G20 presidency, as well as coordination of approaches in the UN, BRICS and RIC. They will also touch on a number of regional topics, including the creation of security architecture in the Asia-Pacific region, the current state of Afghanistan, and developments in Ukraine,” it added.

Russia supports India’s G20 presidency in its commitment to promote a unifying agenda that will restore confidence in multilateral diplomacy and prevent the fragmentation of the global economy, as per the statement.

“We share the relevance of India’s stated priorities: ensuring inclusive and sustainable economic growth; accelerating progress towards the achievement of sustainable development goals; reforming multilateral institutions; digital modernisation; and increasing women’s economic engagement,” the statement read.

Russia is active on all G20 ministerial tracks, supports India’s effort to improve working mechanisms and create specialised processes to respond to natural disasters and launch start-ups. Russia is also ready to make a significant contribution to making progress in all these areas. “We aim to work together with our Indian colleagues to achieve the desired result, showing the greatest possible flexibility,” it said.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Tuesday arrived in India for the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (G20 FMM). Lavrov will also attend Raisina Dialogue 2023.

“Welcome to India! FM Sergey Lavrov of Russia @mfa_russia and @UNDESA Under Secretary General Li Junhua arrive in New Delhi for #G20FMM. FM Lavrov will also attend #Raisina2023,” Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Arindam Bagchi tweeted on Tuesday.

The upcoming event’s theme is ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future’. During the event, Lavrov will meet his Indian Counterpart S Jaishankar.

Russia considers the G20 a prestigious forum for the world’s leading economies, a significant discussion platform on global governance, where balanced consensus decisions should be made in the interests of all humankind. Its participants account for about 80 per cent of global GDP, international trade, and greenhouse gas emissions, as well as two-thirds of the world’s population, according to the Russian Foreign Ministry.

The statement said that the importance and role of the foreign ministers’ meetings in G20 activities is steadily growing. This format was launched in 2012. The key goal is to exchange views on current international issues and challenges.

The meeting this year will be concentrated on multilateralism, energy and food security, and international development. The agenda also includes counterterrorism, labour resources, humanitarian assistance and reduction of the impacts of natural disasters.

“During the regular foreign ministers’ meeting, we intend to firmly and openly talk about the reasons and instigators of the current serious problems in world politics and the global economy. We will focus on the attempts by the West to take revenge for the inevitable disappearance of the levers of dominance from its hands. We will also concentrate on its striving to continue receiving unilateral rent, in part, through unequal trade and violent interference in the affairs of sovereign states,” the ministry said.

We are set to clearly state Russia’s assessments of the current security, energy and food situation. We will present an unbiased factual picture of the act of terrorism, the bombing of the Nord Stream gas pipeline in the EU and NATO zone of responsibility, and the illegal seizing of Russian humanitarian fertiliser shipments designated for African and other needy countries, according to the official statement.

The Russian Foreign Ministery said it welcomes the initiative of the Indian Presidency on organising a special G20 pavilion at the International Book Fair (February 25-March 5 of this year) in New Delhi and that Russia plans to hold an exhibition at the Fair on the commonality of world outlooks and the mutual influence of Leo Tolstoy (195th birth anniversary) and Mahatma Gandhi (75th anniversary of this tragic death). EAM arrives in NY, to hold bilateral talks with his Norway, Iraq, UK counterparts

Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s US visit, he will be holding a series of bilateral and multilateral meetings on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly meeting…reports Asian Lite News.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday (local time) arrived in New York to hold bilateral talks with his Norway, Iraq and UK counterparts.

He will be meeting Norwegian Foreign Minister Ine Eriksen Soereide, newly appointed UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss, and Iraq’s Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein.

“Began my #UNGA meetings with FM Ine Eriksen Soreide of Norway. Appreciated our working together in the Security Council. A comprehensive discussion on Afghanistan. Important for the international community to take a unified approach,” tweeted Jaishankar.

Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s US visit, he will be holding a series of bilateral and multilateral meetings on the side-lines of the United Nations General Assembly meeting.

Officials sources told ANI that EAM will be taking part in the G4 foreign ministers meet on September 22 and is likely to participate at the SAARC meeting on September 26. However, the meeting is yet to be confirmed.

G4 nations comprise Brazil, Germany, India, and Japan.

Several meetings on Afghanistan are also expected. Qatar is also organizing meetings in which India is likely to participate.

High-level debate week at the UN General Assembly will begin tomorrow. Top leaders from across the world have already started converging in New York

The UNGA meeting this year is in a hybrid format but a large number of leaders are expected to arrive in New York.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be addressing UNGA on September 25.

EAM speaks to his Omani counterpart, discusses Afghanistan situation

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Wednesday held talks with Badr Albusaidi Foreign Minister of Oman and discussed the Afghanistan situation and the ongoing Covid-19 related cooperation between the two countries.

Jaishankar also thanked Oman for supporting India’s repatriation flights from Kabul.

In a twitter post Jaishankar said, “Good to talk to Omani Foreign Minister @badralbusaidi Discussed Afghanistan and Covid. Thank Oman for supporting our repatriation flights.”

Earlier Jaishankar had met Badr Albusaidi in Tehran in August on the sidelines of the swearing-in of Iran’s new President Ayatollah Sayyid Ebrahim Raisi.

Since the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan on August 15, India has been in touch with various countries including Oman for operating repatriation flights from Kabul and Dushanbe.

Last week, the MEA said India evacuated a vast majority of Indians from Afghanistan through its ‘Operation Devi Shakti’ launched by New Delhi to repatriate its citizens from the war-torn country.#

A total of 550 people including Indian nationals, Afghans and other country nationals have been brought back through 6 flights from Afghanistan, MEA Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said.

Out of 550 evacuees around 260 were Indian nationals and the figure is excluding the Indian Embassy personnel, Bagchi added.

Separately, India has also facilitated the evacuation of Indian nationals through other agencies and other country partners, he stated. (India News Network)

‘India has transformed to modern economy, vibrant democracy’

“Our 75th year as a free nation is also the starting point to envision where we will be on our centenary,” said EAM S Jaishankar, reports Asian Lite News

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said in the last 75 years, people of India have displayed collective commitment to create a vibrant democracy and a modern economy.

The EAM said this while inaugurating ”Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav” on Friday ahead of India’s 75th Independence Day, organised by the Indian Council for Cultural Relation (ICCR) in Delhi.

“As the tricolour unfolds at the Red Fort this 15th August, we will be marking a historic milestone in the journey of a civilizational state towards a contemporary nation. This is certainly a moment for celebration; but equally one for introspection and renewed resolve,” Jaishankar said.

“In the 75 years that have passed, we, the people of India, have displayed a huge collective commitment to creating a vibrant democracy, a modern economy and an energetic civil society. To that end, we have drawn on the efforts of untold and often unknown freedom fighters, as also masses of citizens who nurtured their spirit. We, therefore, pay homage to those whose sacrifices make our tomorrow possible,” he added.

The EAM further noted that in this period, along with India, the world has changed profoundly. Significant shifts – starting with the economy and extending to politics, to culture and to other domains – have driven a rebalancing process that is creating a multi-polar world, he said.

“In such a reality, the capabilities, the influence, in fact, the very personality of our nation has a growing impact on the world order. This ability to shape global developments through an optimal mix of hard and soft power constitutes the essence of our diplomacy today. And, we can embark on that now with much greater confidence than ever before,” the EAM said.

The EAM said that it was inevitable that once democracy struck deeper roots in India, that the authentic voices of our society would find expression.

“We see that every day at home in a variety of ways. As a result, our heritage, traditions and practices are once again getting the recognition that they have long deserved. The celebration of the International Day of Yoga is symbolic of that development. This anniversary, of course, offers us an opportunity to present to the world many other facets of our rich and diverse culture,” he said.

The EAM pointed out that as we approached this momentous anniversary, India too was severely tested by the Covid pandemic. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, our people responded courageously not only at home, but stood with others abroad as well.

While concluding the address, Jaishankar said, “Our 75th year as a free nation is also the starting point to envision where we will be on our centenary. The bold transformations at home will give us an increasingly salient role in the international system.”

“As a democratic polity, a pluralistic society, an innovative economy and as a culture of unmatched diversity, our contributions have a real weight and value. Our ability to harmonize tradition and modernity stands out in particular. Already, India is perceived as a first responder, a climate action leader, the pharmacy of the world, a reservoir of talent and as a reliable development partner,” he added. (India News Network)
