King will attend Easter church service at Windsor

The announcement that the King, aged 75, will be at the Easter morning church service will be seen as an encouraging sign about his health…reports Asian Lite News

The King and Queen will attend the Easter Sunday service at St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle, Buckingham Palace has confirmed.

This will be one of the most significant events King Charles will have attended since his cancer diagnosis last month. The King and Queen will be joined at the service by other senior royals.

But the Prince and Princess of Wales will not be there, as Catherine continues with her cancer treatment.

The announcement that the King, aged 75, will be at the Easter morning church service will be seen as an encouraging sign about his health.

He has continued to carry out meetings and kept up his work as head of state. But he has not been at public events this year, after having treatment for an enlarged prostate and later revealing that he had been diagnosed with a form of cancer.

The King will be with Queen Camilla, who has been carrying a number of solo royal engagements in her husband’s absence.

The Princess of Wales, who put out a video statement last week about being treated for cancer, is continuing her recovery. It had already been announced that she would not be at the Easter service at the church on the Windsor estate.

Her husband Prince William and their three children will also not be at St George’s Chapel on Sunday. There have been calls for her privacy and she will be spending more time out of public sight as she receives treatment.

The Easter church service is a regular feature of the royal calendar, usually attended by many senior royals, but this year it is expected to be a smaller gathering.

In the run-up to Easter, King Charles hosted a gathering of faith leaders in Buckingham Palace. The meeting on Tuesday was in support of a charity that brings together representatives of religious faiths, including Christian, Muslim and Jewish leaders.

Building bridges between religions and encouraging tolerance has been a long-standing cause for King Charles.

Pope urges peace in Ukraine, Middle East in Easter message

Israeli-Palestinian tensions have sharply increased since Israeli police raids last week on the Al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem, which caused outrage across the Arab world…reports Asian Lite News

Pope Francis in his Easter address at the Vatican on Sunday prayed for both Russians and Ukrainians and called for a resumption of dialogue between Israelis and Palestinians, reported DW News.

The pontiff decried “the darkness and the gloom in which, all too often, our world finds itself enveloped.” “Help the beloved Ukrainian people on their journey towards peace, and shed the light of Easter upon the people of Russia,” he said.

Since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the pontiff has mentioned Ukraine in almost all of his public speeches and has increasingly criticized Moscow.

He also voiced “deep concern” over a flare-up in tensions between Israel and Palestinians.

Recent violence in the Middle East “threatens the desired climate of trust and mutual respect needed to resume dialogue between Israelis and Palestinians,” Francis said.

Israeli-Palestinian tensions have sharply increased since Israeli police raids last week on the Al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem, which caused outrage across the Arab world.

Francis, 86, presided at a solemn Easter day Mass in a sunny St Peter’s Square after unseasonal cold forced him to skip an outdoor service on Friday — a precaution following his hospitalisation for bronchitis at the end of March.

Francis was discharged from a Rome hospital after three nights at the start of this month because of a bronchial infection. It was the pope’s second stay in the hospital since 2021, and he has increasingly suffered from health issues in recent years. He now uses a wheelchair because of knee pain, reported DW News.

He also presided over the Vigil mass — a 2 1/2 hour ceremony before 8,000 people — in the Vatican Basilica on Saturday evening. At that service, he lamented the “icy winds of war” and other injustices.

However, Francis did not attend the annual “Way of the Cross” prayer service on Good Friday as a precautionary measure because of the cold weather. (ANI)

Cheval Blanc Paris Presents ‘Easter Bloom’ by Maxime Frederic

Maxime Fre’de’ric, Pastry Chef of Cheval Blanc Paris, and his teams have dreamed up a beautifully bucolic Easter creation. To celebrate the arrival of spring, they extend an invitation to stroll through a chocolate garden where the rose reigns supreme.

Slow down. Lean in. Inhale its scent. Observe. Marvel. A rose is blooming. The poetic rose presents silky petals and a corolla in 75 per cent dark chocolate made in the atelier of the chocolatier Nicolas Berger. These must be plucked delicately, with just the fingertips, to discover what lies at its tender heart: a chocolate egg filled with chocolate-coated, caramelised hazelnuts from Maxime Fre’de’ric’s family farm, Le Secret de Nos Vergers, in Normandy. The Queen of her realm, the rose reigns in majesty over a delicate bar of chocolate garnished with pistachios, candied raspberry, and rose jam.

An exceptional piece recalling a floral composition, made specially to grace gourmet tables, it serves 6-8 people and is priced at EUR180. Available by pre-order on www.cadeau-paris.chevalblanc.com Easter creation for pick up from April 6-9, 2023 at Cheval Blanc Paris.

Butterfly Effect: Le Bristol Paris celebrates springtime with custom Easter Egg and decor

The Palace hotel shines the spotlight on its in-house chocolate factory with a new chocolate Easter Egg by Chef chocolatier Johan Giacchetti, echoed by a custom art installation in the lobby.

This Easter season, the team is introducing a fresh, nature-inspired take on the annual Easter egg with their ‘Butterfly Effect’ creation. Hand-crafted out of dark chocolate from Madagascar the large egg stands erect on a chocolate foundation and is filled with a praline of crushed almonds, hazelnut morsels, and vanilla. In a design influenced by Chef Johan Giacchetti’s love for springtime nature walks, the egg is adorned by a delicate flourish of butterflies coloured in deep red lining the side as if to have landed there temporarily before fluttering away again.

To echo the chocolaterie’s elegant Easter egg creation, Le Bristol Paris’ lobby is decorated for springtime with a breathtaking installation of 20,000 paper butterflies created in France by Studio Bjorg in collaboration with renowned paper artist Mathilde Nivet.

The installation decorates the lobby’s central table, visible immediately upon entry through the hotel’s revolving doors. ‘Butterfly Effect’ chocolate Easter egg will be available at L’Epicerie des Ateliers du Bristol from March 22 to April 10, 2023 and is EUR90.

Price Rise Kills Easter Fest

Soaring prices dampen festive spirit as Ethiopians celebrate Othodox Easter

Holiday shoppers in Ethiopia’s capital have encountered soaring prices on the market as Ethiopian Orthodox followers prepare to celebrate Easter on Sunday.

In Ethiopia, Easter comes after a 55-day of fasting from animal products, mainly meat, milk, butter and eggs. It is celebrated with a series of events, including the slaughter of sheep, goats, or oxen, depending on the financial capability of a household.

Ethiopia follows the Eastern Orthodox calendar, different from that of the widely used Gregorian calendar.

“The price of a sheep has gone up significantly with a big-sized sheep being sold for up to 12,000 birr (235 U.S. dollars),” Jelian Shafo, a trader in Berchiko Sheep and Goat Trading Center, told Xinhua.

“An average-size sheep was about 4,000 birr (128 dollars) just a year ago. Now it is sold at 8,000 birr (156 dollars),” he said, blaming the price hike on consecutive failed rains that hit pasture in rural areas since last year.

Higher transportation cost, almost double that of the previous holiday season, also pushed up prices, said Shafo, who has to get his sheep and goats from Arsi-Bale areas, about 300 kilometers southeast of the capital, Addis Ababa.

Addis Ababa is the most preferred destination for traders to resell the livestock they buy from smallholder farmers, who are engaged in the fattening of sheep, goats and bulls in the countryside.

For now, Shafo said, buyers are not interested in buying his livestock, even though he was trying to sell them at buying prices before the holiday market ends.

Sisay Bedada, another trader at Berchiko Sheep and Goat Trading Center, also complained for the price surges.

“Livestock prices soar. Up to 5,000 birr (98 dollars) is added on the price of a big sheep as compared to the price of the same during last holiday,” he said.

Bedada said higher prices for fodder and supply shortages resulting from violence and bloodshed in some parts of Ethiopia are also to blame.

The 18-month conflict in the northern part of the country, the unrest in some Amhara and Oromia regions, coupled with the socioeconomic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and higher fuel prices on the global market have all helped push up prices of commodities in Ethiopia.

According to the Central Statistical Agency, inflation remains high, reaching 34.7 percent in March, when the rate for food shot up to 43.4 percent, the highest in several years.

Local and federal authorities have been trying to ease inflationary pressures through administrative actions, including the introduction of a temporary price cap for food items and a three-month ban on rent increase by landlords.

At Shola chicken market, prices are also much higher than last year.

“Life has turned to be tough due to soaring prices of each and every commodity,” one shopper, Yemariamnesh Hailu, told Xinhua.

“An egg used to sell for about 5 birr a year ago. Now it is 9 birr,” said Hailu, who depends on pottery for her livelihood.

ALSO READ: World Bank announces $300 mn rehabilitation fund for Ethiopia

During holidays like Easter, people in Ethiopia have a tradition of slaughtering a cow or ox for sharing among a group. The tradition, called “Kircha” in Amharic, helps low-income earners access to meat.

Belayneh Zenebe, another shopper, said he is considering participating in “Kircha” with his neighbors, provided that he could afford his share of 6,000 birr (117 dollars) to get a piece of meat.

The price of a medium-sized ox is being sold at 60,000 birr (1,176 dollars) this Easter, about 30 percent higher than during the Ethiopian Orthodox Christmas holiday earlier this year, traders told Xinhua.

The soaring cost of living in Africa’s second most populous nation has also been exacerbated by a shortage of edible oil.

The Ministry of Finance said recently that the country will import 150 million liters of edible oil during the coming three months.

The government had earlier cut taxes and tariffs on imports of all edible oil products, but the measure seemed to be not enough to improve the situation.

Guterres pleads for a 4-day Easter ceasefire in Ukraine

Many good-faith efforts by many parties to reach a cease-fire in Ukraine have failed…reports Asian Lite News

N Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has made a plea for a four-day Holy Week humanitarian pause in the war in Ukraine beginning on Holy Thursday and running through Easter Sunday, April 24, to allow for humanitarian corridors, warning that the destruction and human loss seen so far “could pale in comparison to the horror that lies ahead.”

“In five days, Ukrainians and Russians will mark Easter,” Guterres said.

“This holiday (is) a time for reflection on the meaning of suffering, sacrifice, death, and rebirth. But this year, Holy Week is being observed under the cloud of a war that represents the total negation of the Easter message.”

Speaking as Russian and Ukrainian troops engaged in a long-awaited battle in the east of Ukraine on Tuesday, Guterres said that “the terrible concentration of forces and firepower” makes this battle more violent and destructive,” and warned that the civilian loss the world has witnessed so far “could pale” in comparison with the horrors that lie ahead.

“This cannot be allowed to happen,” Guterres told reporters in New York. “Hundreds of thousands of lives hang in the balance.”

Many good-faith efforts by many parties to reach a cease-fire in Ukraine have failed.

Lamenting the failing efforts by many parties to reach a cease-fire in Ukraine, the UN chief said that the humanitarian pause is necessary to allow safe passage of all civilians fleeing the areas of confrontation, and the delivery of life-saving aid to the hardest-hit areas, such as Mariupol, Kherson, Donetsk and Luhansk.

He again called on Russians and Ukrainians to silence the guns and begin to forge a way toward peace and safety. He also urged “all champions of peace around the world” to join his Easter appeal.

Guterres added: “Save lives. Stop the bloodshed and destruction. Open a window for dialogue and peace and keep faith with the meaning and the message of Easter.”

White House holds first Easter Egg Roll in two years

The Bidens officiated one of the egg rolls, with the president blowing a whistle to start kids running down their lanes with a painted wooden spoon…reports Asian Lite News

The White House on Monday held the first Easter Egg Roll in two years, a longtime tradition interrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic.

“To all of you, have fun today and welcome to the White House,” US President Joe Biden said from the Blue Room balcony to a crowd of children and their parents.

Biden was joined by his wife – Jill Biden – and two Easter Bunnies on a rainy and chilly day.

“My job is to keep it from raining for another two minutes,” he joked.

The Bidens officiated one of the egg rolls, with the president blowing a whistle to start kids running down their lanes with a painted wooden spoon.

American television host and comedian Jimmy Fallon, whose daughter participated in the egg roll, was among the celebrities in attendance.

Around 30,000 guests were expected to show up on the South Lawn at Monday’s event, according to the White House. But there were only a few individuals seen wearing a mask.

Covid-19 case numbers have begun to rise in the United States again, and nearly all of them were caused by the highly contagious Omicron subvariant BA.2.

White House Covid-19 Response Coordinator Ashish Jha on Sunday urged Americans to get vaccinated and receive boosters if eligible.

“The good news is our vaccines are holding up really well against BA.2, against all of the Omicron variants, especially if you’ve been boosted,” Jha told a Fox News program.

“So the key here is you’ve got to have the initial two shots, and you’ve got to have a booster,” he continued. “That’s what’s really protecting people at this moment.”

A federal judge in Florida on Monday struck down the Biden administration’s mask mandate for airplanes and other public transport methods.

US District Judge Kathryn Kimball Mizelle said the order was unlawful because it exceeded the statutory authority of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The CDC announced last week that it was extending the nationwide mask order for public transit for 15 days, as it monitors the uptick in Covid-19 cases.

‘Biden has no plans to visit Ukraine’

President Joe Biden is not planning to visit Kyiv, despite Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelensky urging him to demonstrate US support for the fight against Russia by traveling to the embattled capital, the White House said Monday.

“There’s no plans for the president to go. Let me just reiterate that,” Press Secretary Jen Psaki told reporters.

A string of European leaders have made the trip to Kyiv and met with Zelensky.

However, a Biden visit would present a more complex security challenge. The Biden administration has said it instead wants to send a high-ranking official, most likely Secretary of State Antony Blinken or Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin.

Last week, Biden said “we’re making that decision,” although he muddied the waters by responding “yeah” when asked by a reporter whether he might go.

Psaki made clear Monday that “if anyone were to go… we wouldn’t outline from here or anywhere from the government who, if and when for security reasons.”

Biden’s chief spokeswoman also confirmed that there are hopes of reopening the US embassy in Kyiv, although she gave no timeline.

“That certainly is our objective. Obviously having a diplomatic presence on the ground is important,” Psaki said.

In an interview aired by CNN on Sunday, Zelensky said “I think” Biden will visit, “but it’s his decision, of course, and about the safety situation, it depends.”

“I think he’s the leader of the United States and that’s why he should come here to see.”

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba praised Biden’s backing so far for his country in an interview broadcast Sunday on CBS and said a visit by the US leader would “be an important message of support.”

“A personal meeting between two presidents could also pave the way for new supplies and of… US weapons to Ukraine and also for discussions on the possible political settlement of this conflict,” he added.
