Erdogan meets Palestinian President

Erdogan extended his condolences for Palestinians killed in attacks by Israeli security forces and settlers, wishing a speedy recovery to the injured…reports Asian Lite News

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan held a closed-door meeting with his visiting Palestinian counterpart Mahmoud Abbas and Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Ankara.

Wednesday’s meeting at the presidential complex came a day after Erdogan and Abbas held one-on-one talks to discuss bilateral relations, the Palestine-Israel issue, and other regional and international developments, reports Turkey’s semi-official Anadolu News Agency.

During the meeting on Wednesday, Erdogan extended his condolences for Palestinians killed in attacks by Israeli security forces and settlers, wishing a speedy recovery to the injured.

“Pointing out the importance of the unity and solidarity of the Palestinian people, President Erdogan stated that those who seek to undermine the peace process benefit from Palestinian division,” Turkey’s Communications Directorate said on Twitter after the meeting.

Erdogan underlined that his country did not accept the ongoing Israeli blockade imposed on the Gaza Strip, adding that Ankara was closely monitoring developments in occupied East Jerusalem and the Al-Aqsa Mosque.

“The unity and reconciliation of the Palestinians are key elements in this process,” he added

Ankara strongly supports a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict, including the establishment of a Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Erdogan further stressed that the international community, especially the UN, should be engaged in the Palestinian issue.

The Palestinians had internal divisions after Hamas’ takeover of the Gaza Strip, home to more than two million people, in 2007.

Since then, the two factions have yet to achieve reconciliation.

Gulf lifeline for ailing Turkey

Erdogan’s Gulf tour secures foreign investment pledges, crucial for Turkey’s depleted reserves ahead of large debt repayments in November…reports Asian Lite News

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, after clinching another five-year term in the recent elections, last week embarked on an effort to save Turkey’s faltering economy by making a tour of Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the UAE, seeking investments and financial support from the oil-rich Gulf states.

The importance of a Gulf lifeline for Turkey’s ailing economy is shown by the fact that recently Qatar and the United Arab Emirates provided Turkey with a USD 20 billion currency swap, while Saudi Arabia last March deposited USD 5 billion into the Central Bank of Turkey. Furthermore, last month UAE and Turkey signed a trade deal amounting to about USD 40 billion over the next five years.

As the Turkish economy is facing runaway inflation close to 40 per cent, the Turkish Lira has lost more than 29 per cent of its value this year and foreign exchange reserves are depleted, Erdogan was reluctantly forced to accept economic reality and abandon, at least temporarily, his controversial economic policies.

He brought back to the post of Finance Minister former investment banker Mehmet Simsek, who had served in the same post from 2009 to 2015, and appointed Hafize Gaye Erkan, former CEO of First Republic Bank, as Governor of the Central Bank, trying to convince international investors that he will no longer insist on applying his unorthodox economic policies.

Erdogan’s tour of the three Gulf States had been prepared by Mehmet Simsek, who last month had meetings in Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Qatar and held preliminary discussions for the promotion of economic partnerships between these states and Turkey.

Speaking to reporters before leaving Istanbul, Erdogan said: “We hope to improve our relations and cooperation in many fields. We will focus on joint investment and commercial initiatives we can carry out together with these countries.”

The Turkish President, accompanied by about 200 businessmen and several Ministers, started his three-day tour on Monday, visiting first Saudi Arabia and having meetings with King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

In Jeddah some 400 business leaders and officials took part in the “Saudi-Turkish Business Forum” and discussed investment opportunities, particularly in the sectors of manufacturing, construction, tourism, mining, food agriculture and defence.

The two sides signed nine agreements covering energy, construction, digital technology, media, education, health and real estate. The value of these agreements has not been disclosed.

Saudi Defense Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman said that Saudi Arabia has agreed to purchase Turkish Baykar drones, but did not disclose the amount involved in the deal.

It should be noted that last month, Saudi giant company Aramco, a leading producer of energy and chemicals, held a meeting with some 80 Turkish contractors and discussed with them the prospects of many projects to be executed in Saudi Arabia for an estimated amount of USD 50 billion.

Currently, there are 1,140 Saudi companies operating in Turkey, and 395 Turkish companies investing in the Kingdom.

The next stop of President Erdogan was in Qatar on Tuesday, where he was greeted by Emir Shiekh Tamin Bin Hamad Al Thani and had talks at the Lusail Palace.

During the meeting, Erdogan gave the Emir as a gift Turkey’s first manufactured electric car called Togg.

The two leaders attended the signing of a joint statement between Qatar and Turkey on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

In the last stop of Erdogan’s tour on Wednesday, UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan met with Erdogan at the presidential palace in Abu Dhabi.

According to the official WAM news agency, the two leaders attended the signing of agreements and memorandums of understanding “estimated to be worth USD 50.7 billion.

The Abu Dhabi Developmental Holding sovereign wealth fund (ADQ) alone signed a memorandum of understanding to finance up to USD 8.5 billion of Turkey earthquake relief bonds and to provide $3 billion in credit facilities to support Turkish exports.

President Erdogan’s tour of the three rich Gulf countries can be considered a successful one, as he secured pledges of sizeable direct foreign investment and desperately need foreign exchange to boost the Central Banks’ depleted foreign exchange reserves, before November when Turkey is facing a number of large debt repayments. Aviation activities

The strong economic relations and tourism, trade and investment cooperation between the UAE and Türkiye are evident in their aviation activities.

Their national carriers act as key connectors to promote tourism and discover business and investment opportunities, with dozens of daily flights offering travellers more convenience and choices.

Travel between the UAE and Türkiyehas seen a recent surge in demand. Emirati national airlines said they have risen to the challenge, as Türkiye is a vital market, adding they have witnessed a remarkable rise in journeys to Turkish locations.

The General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) said as part of its efforts to enhance air transport relations and increase opportunities for trade and economic cooperation with other countries, an air services agreement signed by the UAE and Turkiye in 1986, which governs their air transport relations and facilitates flights between the two nations.

The UAE’s national carriers operate 157 weekly flights from the country’s airports, while Turkish airlines run 80 weekly flights to Emirati airports, totalling 237 weekly flights between the two countries.

During the first half of this year, the number of passengers flying from Emirati airports to Türkiye reached 448,487, and the number of arrivals was 565,318 passengers. Meanwhile, the number of transit passengers through UAE airports was 459,313.

Erdogan says ready to host Putin in August

One of the key issues expected on the agenda of the two leaders’ talks is whether the Black Sea Grain Initiative will be prolonged….reports Asian Lite News

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he is ready to host his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Ankara next month for talks on several issues.

“We are preparing to host Putin in August,” Erdogan told reporters in Istanbul.

According to Erdogan, one of the key issues expected on the agenda of the two leaders’ talks is whether the Black Sea Grain Initiative will be prolonged.

The deal, brokered by Turkey and the UN that allows Ukraine to export grain and other agricultural products from its Black Sea ports, will expire on July 17.

Erdogan had called for extending the deal last week, stressing that poor African countries in particular are in desperate need of grain shipments from Ukraine.

The Black Sea Grain Initiative was launched in July 2022 to provide a humanitarian maritime corridor for ships with food and fertilizer exports from Ukrainian Black Sea ports.

Meanwhile, Erdogan said the Turkish lawmakers would make the right decision on Sweden’s NATO bid in line with Turkey’s interests, media reported.

“Our parliament will… make the right decision in line with the interests of our country,” the Turkish President added on Thursday when returning from the NATO summit held in Lithuania’s capital Vilnius on July 11-12.

Finland and Sweden applied for NATO membership in February 2022. Turkey finally approved Finland’s bid in March this year but has not yet ratified Sweden’s, Xinhua news agency reported.

“Sweden’s NATO membership was one of the issues highlighted in the context of the (NATO) summit. Our principled stance on this issue has been clear from the very beginning,” Erdogan said.

Before attending the NATO summit, the Turkish President made a tough speech over Sweden’s NATO bid, saying the EU should open a gate for Ankara’s EU membership in return for Turkey’s consent to Sweden’s NATO membership.

Erdogan, Biden discuss Sweden’s NATO bid

The two leaders also discussed Ukraine’s position in NATO, the delivery of F-16 fighter jets and Turkey’s efforts to join the EU…reports Asian Lite News

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has discussed Sweden’s NATO bid with his US counterpart Joe Biden over the phone ahead of the alliance’s summit this week.

The two leaders also discussed Ukraine’s position in NATO, the delivery of F-16 fighter jets and Turkey’s efforts to join the EU, according to a statement by Erdogan’s office released on Sunday.

During the phone call, Erdogan noted “Sweden has taken some steps in the right direction” toward the ratification of its NATO bid by making changes in its anti-terrorism legislation, said the statement.

However, the Turkish leader said these steps were “nullified” as the supporters of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) “continue to hold demonstrations freely in the country to advocate terrorism”.

Erdogan also stressed that it was not correct to associate Turkey’s F-16 purchase from the US with Sweden’s NATO bid, referring to several objections from the US Congress to Ankara’s purchase demand for F-16s over its veto of Sweden’s NATO membership.

The two presidents agreed to meet face-to-face to discuss bilateral ties and regional issues in detail at the NATO summit in Lithuania’s capital Vilnius on July 11-12, according to the statement.

Regarding Turkey’s EU bid, Erdogan told Biden that his country was “principled and honest” about EU membership, appealing to revive its membership process and hoping for getting a clear and strong message of support from leading countries of the EU at the upcoming Vilnius Summit.

Biden, for his part, conveyed to Erdogan his desire to welcome Sweden into NATO as soon as possible, according to a White House statement.

Sweden and Finland applied to join NATO last year but met with objections from Turkey on the grounds that the two countries harbour members of PKK and the Gulen movement, Xinhua news agency reported.

Turkey eventually lifted its objection to Finland’s NATO accession earlier this year after Helsinki took what Ankara calls “concrete steps” against such organisations.

In April, Finland became NATO’s 31st member state.

Erdogan : Sweden must stop PKK protests

Erdogan said his country continues its “constructive attitude” toward Sweden’s joining the alliance, according to a statement from his office…reports Asian Lite News

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has urged Sweden to prevent the demonstrations by supporters of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in Stockholm in exchange for a green light on its NATO bid.

In a phone conversation with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg on Sunday, Erdogan said his country continues its “constructive attitude” toward Sweden’s joining the alliance, according to a statement from his office.

But Erdogan said the Nordic country’s change on terror laws does not meet the expectation of Ankara as long as the PKK can demonstrate in the country “freely”, reports Xinhua news agency.

Turkey has long been saying that Ankara will only admit Sweden’s NATO bid in the upcoming Vilnius summit if the latter takes concrete steps to prevent anti-Türkiye “terror” activities in the country, the statement said.

The latest developments in Russia were also discussed during the phone call, it added.

Turkey summons Swiss envoy over demonstration against Erdogan

Omer Celik, the spokesperson of the ruling Justice and Development Party, concurred with Bozbay’s comments by denouncing the demonstration…reports Asian Lite News

Turkey has summoned Jean-Daniel Ruch, the Swiss ambassador to Ankara over a demonstration in Zurich, Switzerland against its President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in which protesters burned Erdogan’s effigy.

Turkish Deputy Foreign Minister Mehmet Kemal Bozbay said these acts were unacceptable, calling on Swiss authorities to launch an investigation into the incident and identify those involved as soon as possible.

Omer Celik, the spokesperson of the ruling Justice and Development Party, concurred with Bozbay’s comments by denouncing the demonstration.

“We condemn the heinous attack by supporters of the terrorist organization PKK (the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party) in Switzerland, which targeted the Turkish flag and our President Erdogan,” Celik said on Twitter.

The spokesperson also strongly condemned “the connivance of the Swiss authorities to these despicable acts”, asking Switzerland to be determined in the fight against terrorism and hate crimes.

The PKK, listed as a terrorist organisation by Turkey, the US and the European Union, has been rebelling against the Turkish government for over 30 years.

Erdogan dials Putin, offers mediation in Ukraine conflict

Erdogan emphasised that Turkey is determined to continue to make necessary efforts to establish a just peace between Russia and Ukraine….reports Asian Lite News

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, during a telephonic conversation, discussed about the conflict between Ukraine and Russia.

Erdogan stressed that the continuation of consultations with the United Nations to remove obstacles to the export of Russian grain and fertiliser would be beneficial, Xinhua news agency reported, citing a statement published on Wednesday by Erdogan’s office.

The Turkish President said that the whole world attaches importance to the continuation of the Black Sea Grain Initiative, which allows the export of Ukrainian grain to world markets, underlining that the agreement they established through joint efforts plays a vital role in tackling the global food crisis.

Erdogan emphasised that Turkey is determined to continue to make necessary efforts to establish a just peace between Russia and Ukraine.

Earlier in the day, Erdogan also spoke to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, offering aid to investigate the destruction of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant dam in southern Ukraine.

In July 2022, Russia and Ukraine separately signed a document in Istanbul with Turkey and the United Nations on grain and fertiliser exports from Ukraine and Russia to ensure supplies to global markets amid the Ukraine crisis.

The memorandum of understanding between Russia and the United Nations on the facilitation of exports of Russian food and fertilizer is a parallel agreement with the Black Sea Grain Initiative.

While the exports of Ukrainian grain have made strides, Russia has constantly expressed displeasure with the lack of progress in the facilitation of exports of Russian food and fertiliser.

The initiative, initially in effect for 120 days, was extended in mid-November 2022 for another 120 days till March 18, 2023. At that point, Russia only agreed to extend the deal for 60 days, till May 18, 2023. On May 17, Russia agreed to extend the deal for another 60 days.

Erdogan vows new constitution

The current Turkish constitution was introduced in 1982 and has been amended 19 times since then….reports Asian Lite News

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has pledged to introduce a new constitution to replace the current one, as he officially began a new five-year term as the Turkish head of state.

In his inauguration speech at the presidential palace, Erdogan on Saturday said the current constitution was “a product of the (1980) coup” and that it needed to be replaced with “a libertarian, civil and inclusive one” that would strengthen democracy.

The current Turkish constitution was introduced in 1982 and has been amended 19 times since then. The last amendment in 2017 introduced a presidential system and abolished the parliamentary system, Xinhua news agency reported.

Erdogan, sworn in by the country’s parliament for a third term as President earlier on Saturday, also said the country had set foot on a new path and was entering what he called the “Century of Turkey,” urging the Turkish people to “transcend the limitations of election-focused discussions” and “turn their gaze toward the future”.

Erdogan won 52.18 per cent of votes in the presidential runoff on May 28 against his rival Kemal Kilicdaroglu, the leader of the centre-left Republican People’s Party.

The President, who has been leading the country since he became Prime Minister in 2003, became the first executive president of Turkey in 2018 following a constitutional referendum in 2017 which changed Turkey’s parliamentary system into a presidential one.
