Mastering the Board Exam Challenge

Create a well-structured study timetable that can help you manage your time effectively and reduce last-minute cramming. Break down your subjects into manageable chunks and allocate specific time slots for each. Make sure to include short breaks to maintain focus…reports Asian Lite News

As board exams draw near, students frequently experience academic pressure and heightened expectations. The prospect of facing comprehensive assessments can trigger overwhelming stress and anxiety, which if left unchecked can compromise both mental health and academic performance.

Recognising the significance of managing exam-related stress is the first step towards fostering resilience and maintaining calm during this demanding period. In this listicle, we explore five effective strategies by Ajay Singh, School Principal of the Scindia School to empower students to navigate through the challenging board exam duration while ensuring their overall well-being and academic success.

Create a Realistic Study Schedule: Create a well-structured study timetable that can help you manage your time effectively and reduce last-minute cramming. Break down your subjects into manageable chunks and allocate specific time slots for each. Make sure to include short breaks to maintain focus.

Practice Mindfulness and Relaxation Techniques: Incorporate mindfulness and relaxation exercises into your daily routine to alleviate stress. Deep breathing, meditation, yoga, and progressive muscle relaxation are proven methods to calm your mind and reduce anxiety levels. Spend a few minutes each day engaging in these practices to foster a sense of peace and clarity.

Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle: Proper nutrition, regular exercise and adequate sleep are crucial for optimal brain function and stress management. Fuel your body with nutritious foods, stay hydrated and prioritize physical activity to boost your energy levels and enhance concentration. Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night to recharge your body and mind.

Seek Support from Family and Friends: Never hesitate to reach out to your loved ones for emotional support during the exam season. Share your concerns and feelings with them and allow them to provide encouragement and reassurance. Surrounding yourself with positive influences can help alleviate feelings of isolation and foster a sense of belonging.

Practice Positive Self-Talk and Visualization: Cultivate a positive mindset by replacing negative thoughts with affirmations and encouragement. Visualize yourself succeeding in your exams and focus on your strengths and achievements. Celebrate small victories along the way and remind yourself that you are capable of overcoming challenges. By fostering a positive self-image, you can boost your confidence and resilience in the face of adversity.

Prioritize Revision and Review: Regular revisions are important for reinforcing concepts and identifying areas that require further clarification. Allocate dedicated time for reviewing your notes, practicing past papers, and seeking assistance for challenging topics. Effective revision strategies can boost your confidence and performance on exam day. During this time the focus must remain on revising concepts and strengthening understanding and recall, rather than trying to learn new concepts. Last-minute attempts at trying to learn new concepts can lead to unnecessary panic that can derail the study plan and revision schedule.

By implementing these strategies, you can effectively manage exam stress and navigate the board exam season with confidence and resilience. Remember to prioritize self-care and maintain a balanced approach to studying, and don’t forget to celebrate your accomplishments along the way. Good luck!

Healthy food choices on exam days

Missing breakfast is deleterious as long hours of fasting leads to drop in blood sugar level and this affects cognition and focus, which is imperative during examinations…writes Dr Paula Goel

Exams! The word itself stresses not only children but parents and caretakers as well. Keeping in good health is imperative during exams and food plays an important role. Not only does food provide us the required fuel to feel energetic and focused, it also works as a comforting factor for many individuals.

Many types of food can also cause gastritis, abdominal discomfort and bloating. Some varieties of food can cause sleepiness and lethargy. Hence, what is most important is the type and the quantity of food that has to be taken before exams. What is the correct type of food that can be taken before exams and during the exam period?

For this, we need to understand what happens to the human body during exams. Exams are a period of stress for any student irrespective of age, doesn’t matter if you are a child or you are appearing for your masters. Just like the exams that require proper planning, scheduling and organising, food too requires the same. A good diet helps students to beat the stress. The kind of food a student eats helps the student prepare effectively and manage the anxiety of the period.

Exams are an inevitable part of every student’s academic journey and cannot be evaded. During these exam times eating regular and healthy meals and snacks will help your child stay nourished. Having breakfast is an essential component of the diet. Missing breakfast is deleterious as long hours of fasting leads to drop in blood sugar level and this affects cognition and focus, which is imperative during examinations.

If due to the feeling of nervousness your child may become nauseous and avoid eating, make sure they still take the time to eat something. It is important to have a healthy, heavy and filling breakfast before the exams. Their brain will need the energy from food to work efficiently, and eating before an exam will ensure that your child’s mental focus is kept on the exam and not on their hunger.

A hungry child cannot concentrate on the studies and loses focus. Attention is hampered and exam performance declines. Hence it is necessary as parents to ensure that your kids enjoy their meals and snacks. Help your child develop a healthy relationship with food and eating even as they’re coping with exam stress.

There are certain kinds of food that increase alertness, enhance memory retention, and can increase energy levels and general wellbeing of your child. Healthy food choices on exam day include protein-rich foods such as eggs, nuts, cottage cheese and yoghurt.

A good breakfast combination might include whole-grain cereal with low-fat milk, porridge, muesli or eggs and toast with jam. For Indians, vegetable rich poha, or oats with nuts, fruits like bananas, apples, pears, papaya, chikoo may be given. Ragi/ sooji idli or dosa can also be given. Dry fruits and nuts are also concentrated sources of energy and should be given.

Yoghurt is not only high in protein but is also a good probiotic and helps in maintaining the gut flora preventing gastritis , abdominal bloating and discomfort .It is best to avoid foods rich in carbohydrates and oily food as they will induce sleep and cause gastritis.

Nutritionists suggest the intake of oranges, bananas, apples and grapes and green leafy vegetables for students to reduce their stress.

Parents should help kids with the diet they follow during and before the exams for better performance. Here are a few tips to remember –

. Stay hydrated. Dehydration leads to poor exam performance and muscle fatigue

. Stick to small frequent meals that are easy to digest

. Include protein rich foods

. Avoid sugar and salt as they are addictive and leads to fluid retention and weight gain.

. Avoid processed foods and packaged foods as they cause cravings like pizza , burger, vada pav , samosa

What kind of diet should be taken before exams and why?.(photo:IANSLIFE)

. Avoid caffeine

. Avoid aerated drinks and fruit juices. It is best to stick to fresh fruits rather than having fruit juices.

. Have high fibre food which prevents indigestion and abdominal bloating

. Bananas are a good source of energy and provides a whole meal. They can be taken just before exams to maintain blood sugar levels and prevent mental confusion and chaos.

Healthy diet and dietary habits start early in life and family and school plays a very important role in developing healthy eating habits. Healthy eating patterns which start early from life paves the way for good health. After all, there is no need to change healthy dietary habits during exam. However, if dietary habits are poor, it is necessary to bring in some discipline in the eating habits. Remember… what you put in your mouth, finally affects not only your health but career as well!

Seven bullets only strengthened his resolve to clear top exam

However, Rinkoo Rahee was not one to reconcile to his fate. He decided to strengthen his own hands and crack the UPSC exam…reports Asian Lite News

His story is the stuff that Bollywood blockbusters are made up of. A Rs 100 crore scholarship scam that he unearthed when he was a young officer in the Provincial Civil Services (PCS) in March 2009, put him on the firing line of the mafia.

Seven bullets were pumped into him — three in the face — that left him disfigured, blind in one eye, and with impaired hearing in an ear.

Rinkoo Rahee was deputed as social welfare officer in Muzaffarnagar in 2008 when he busted the massive racket. Eight men were booked for the attack on him that followed, out of which four were sentenced to 10 years in prison.

“During the course of my ordeal, I was not fighting the system. The system was fighting me. I was in hospital for four months but my medical leave is ‘pending’ for approval till date,” said Rahee, now 40.

However, Rinkoo Rahee was not one to reconcile to his fate. He decided to strengthen his own hands and crack the UPSC exam.

He finally has done it, securing 683rd rank. UPSC has an age relaxation for some special categories of candidates which helped Rahee.

Rahee said that though he was attacked during the Mayawati regime, he was sent to a psychiatric ward during the Samajwadi Party regime for protesting corruption ‘too much’.

Rahee said, “My grandfather died when my father was 10 years old. My grandmother was thrown out of her in-laws’ house. She had to do every menial job, including cleaning toilets of other people’s homes, to survive. My father was good at studies but had to drop out to take care of the family. I grew up listening to these stories of exploitation and thought that had government officials been honest, we could have benefitted from several schemes. This is what drove me all along.”

Rahee is now the father of an eight-year-old. “It’s not that temptation didn’t knock on my doors. But I knew that if I ever indulged in nefarious activities, someone else and their child may suffer too,” he said.

He said he has insured himself in case there are any more attacks on him in future.

“Now I make my observations very transparent and post them on social media because my death will remove all proof of scams,” he said.

Entrance test mandatory to get varsity admission

The Union Education Ministry says that there has been a demand to implement the CUCET for a long time, but has come into effect now…reports Asian Lite News.

The admission process in most of the central universities will change from the upcoming academic session as Central University Common Entrance Test (CUCET) will come into force for admission to all undergraduate courses in different central universities across the country.
The Union Education Ministry and the University Grants Commission (UGC) have informed central universities about the mandatory entrance test from next academic session, after which all central universities have started preparations for the CET. Delhi University (DU) has also made the CET mandatory for the academic session 2022-23.

These central universities have also passed proposals in their respective Academic and Executive Councils regarding the CET.

According to renowned educationist C.S. Kandpal, this is a new system and its efficacy can be tested on the basis of experience. It is not proper to comment on the merits and demerits of the new system as of now. Educational institutions must see this as a positive change, he added.

The entrace examinations can open new doors for students. If there are demerits in the system or in the conduct or in the process of examinations in future, there is always a chance to improve, Kandpal said.

According to DU Professor Hansraj Suman, class 12 marks will not be completely neglected in the name of CUCET. Many central universities have approved CUCET in their academic council but class 12 board exam results will also be given importance.

The Union Education Ministry says that there has been a demand to implement the CUCET for a long time, but has come into effect now.

Hansraj Suman, also former member of DU Academic Council, said that due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the process for awarding marks in class 12 board exams was misused by several schools which presented exaggerated performance of the students.

The DU Professor is also in favour of completely revamping the admission process in his varsity. However, he says that while doing so the interests of the students from the marginalised and economically weaker sections must be kept in mind.

According to Suman, the way the CET is being introduced, coaching centres will see its importance rising as a result of which students from economically weaker sections may be left behind.

Now from the next cademic session, students will now have to pass the CET with good marks to seek admission in DU, he said.

Other central universities are also following the same admission policy. This means that from the next academic session 2022-23, admission in DU, Jamia Millia Islamia, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Banaras Hindu University, among other central universities, can be possible only through CET.

Under the present admission system, merit list is prepared on the basis of marks obtained in class 12 exams in most of the universities. Students fill the respective university forms on different dates to seek admissions. Unable to get admission in the university of their choice, students approach those universities and colleges where seats are vacant.

The UGC has said that the CET will be conducted from the academic session 2022-23 by the National Testing Agency.

Girl who tried to end life scores highest in supplementary exams

Greeshma, a student of Alvas school of Mudibidare, scored 599 marks out of a total of 625 marks in the examinations…reports Asian Lite News.

A Karnataka SSLC (Class 10) girl student, who had attempted to commit suicide at being denied the opportunity to appear in annual examinations, has managed to score maximum marks in the supplementary exams last month. Greeshma, a student of Alvas school of Mudibidare, scored 599 marks out of a total of 625 marks in the examinations. Among 53,155 students who took the exams, she scored the highest marks.

Greeshma, who had scored 95 per cent in Class 9, was not issued a hall ticket for the SSLC exams as she could not pay the fee of the school. The parents came to know about this when they had tried to enrol her for the exams. Appeals to the Deputy Director for Public Instruction (DDPI) and the Education Minister were of no avail.
A heartbroken Greeshma had attempted to commit suicide on July 17 at her residence. However, timely treatment had saved her life. The incident had made headlines as the Karnataka government was all set to hold SSLC examinations amid the challenge of the Covid pandemic in the state.
After coming to know about the incident, then Education Minister Suresh Kumar had rushed to her residence and spoken to her. He had asked Greeshma to be brave and assured of giving an opportunity for her to write the SSLC exams during supplementary examinations.
Suresh Kumar had further asked her to focus on her studies without worrying too much about what happened.

After the results, an elated Suresh Kumar congratulated her.
“Greeshma, has become a model for others. She did not get diverted from the commitment. Greeshma has achieved what she aspired for,” he said.
“I had been to Greeshma’s residence. I had given her courage and promised that it is my responsibility to give her the opportunity to take supplementary exams. I have also asked her to prepare for it without worrying. Even after I was dropped from the cabinet, I kept in touch with the Commissioner, SSLC Board Directors, Deputy Director of Madhugiri Academic district and Heads of Alva’s institute to ensure Greeshma attended exams. After getting to know about the results and her achievement, my mind is relaxed now.”

Greeshma stated that she is very happy with the results and thanked everyone who helped her to take exams. “I committed a mistake earlier. I had prepared for well the exams,” she added. Greeshma hails from Koratagere town in Tumakuru district. She is the daughter of the Narasimhamurthy and Padmavathi.

CBSE boards 2022 to be held in 2 parts, on reduced syllabus

“This is done to increase the probability of having a Board conducted classes 10 and 12 examinations at the end of the academic session,” the CBSE statement read…reports Asian Lite News

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has decided to rationalize the syllabus for the academic session 2021-22 for Classes 10 and 12. The board exams for the 2021 batch will be held in two terms with 50 per cent syllabus in each term.

In an official statement, the CBSE said the academic session 2021-22 will be divided into two terms.

A systematic approach — looking into the interconnectivity of concepts and topics by subject experts — will be followed.

The board will conduct the examinations at the end of each term on the basis of the bifurcated syllabus.

“This is done to increase the probability of having a Board conducted classes 10 and 12 examinations at the end of the academic session,” the CBSE statement read.

Reiterating the fact that the board had to cancel the Class 10 and Class 12 board exams in view of Covid crisis and continue conducting classes online, the board has announced a slew of measures for the academic session 2021-22 in line with its focus on assessing stipulated learning outcomes by making the examinations competencies and core concepts based, student-centric, transparent, technology-driven, and with an advance provision of alternatives for different future scenarios.

Regarding internal assessment, the board said, for Classes 9 and 10, throughout the year irrespective of term 1 and 2, will include the three periodic tests, student enrichment, portfolio and practical work/ speaking listening activities/ project. While for Classes 11 and 12, internal assessment would include end of topic or unit tests/ exploratory activities/ practicals/ projects.

While the Term 1 Examination in a flexible schedule will be conducted between November-December 2021 with a window period of 4-8 weeks for schools situated in different parts of country and abroad, Term 2 would be held around March-April 2022 at the examination centres fixed by the Board. The board, however, said, it will assess and conduct the examinations, Term 1 and Term 2, considering the situation prevailing at that time.

CBSE, in the official statement, said, efforts will be made to make the internal assessment, practical and project work more credible and valid. Moderation Policy, the board said, will be announced to ensure fair distribution of marks.

Schools will also create a student profile for all assessments undertaken over the academic year and retain the evidences in digital format, CBSE added.

Class 12 optional exams between Aug 15-Sep 15: CBSE

The top court had suggested developing a dispute resolution mechanism, the CBSE said, disputes regarding computation of results will be referred to a committee constituted by the board…reports Asian Lite News.

The CBSE on Monday informed the Supreme Court that the optional examinations for Class 12 students, unsatisfied with its assessment criteria, would be held between August 15 to September 15. The exams would be conducted if the environment is conducive in the backdrop of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

The CBSE in an additional affidavit said: “Regarding the date before which the optional examination for the candidates who are not satisfied with their assessment with the policy, the examinations for such candidates shall be conducted any time between August 15, 2021, to September 15, 2021, subject to conducive situation.” The board added that the examinations for private, patrachar and compartment would be conducted in such a manner so that they will fall within the assessment policy for the academic year 2019-2020.

The board said the policy for tabulation of marks for Class 12 Board Examination 2021 has been formulated by the CBSE to ensure standardisation of marks, as marks of Class 11 and 12 components will be awarded at school level. “Therefore, they will strictly not be comparable across schools due to variations in the quality of question papers, the evaluation standard and processes, the mode of conduct of exams, etc.,” added the affidavit.

The top court had suggested developing a dispute resolution mechanism, the CBSE said, disputes regarding computation of results will be referred to a committee constituted by the board.

“After declaration of result by July 31, if the candidates are not satisfied, CBSE will provide online facility for registration for the examination. Examination will be conducted by the board only in the main subjects as and when conditions are conducive for holding the examinations,” said the affidavit. And added, the marks obtained by a candidate in this examination will be treated as final.

The CBSE added that to ensure standardisation, each school will have to internally moderate the marks to account for the school level variations by using a reliable reference standard as provided in the policy. “This is necessary in the interest of fairness and to ensure that the marks allocated are comparable and there is no adverse impact or undue gain for any student because of the methodology/process of evaluation used by the individual school,” added the affidavit.

On Monday, a bench headed by Justice A.M. Khanwilkar agreed to hear on Tuesday a plea for holding physical examinations for Class 12. The CBSE after the cancellation of Class 12 examination, developed an assessment process with theory and practical components.

On June 17, the CBSE had said for Class 12, marks based on unit test/mid-term/pre-board exam will have 40 per cent weightage; Class 11, marks based on theory component of final exam will 30 per cent weightage; and Class 10, marks based on average theory component of best three performing subjects out of main 5 subjects will have 30 per cent weightage. The CBSE informed the top court that results for Class 12 exams will be declared by July 31.

CBSE Class 12 results by July 31

The CBSE informed the top court that results for Class 12 will be declared by July 31…reports Asian Lite News.

The Supreme Court on Thursday accepted the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) formula for the assessment of Class 12 students.

The CBSE, in an affidavit, informed a bench headed by Justice A.M. Khanwilkar and comprising Justice Dinesh Maheshwari that the performance of the students in Class 11 and Class 10 exams will also be factored in while making the assessments for Class 12 students.

The CBSE said for Class 12, marks based on unit test/mid-term/pre-board exam will have 40 per cent weightage; Class 11, marks based on the theory component of the final exam will have 30 per cent weightage; and Class 10 marks based on average theory component of the best three performing subjects out of the main 5 subjects will have 30 per cent weightage.

The CBSE informed the top court that results for Class 12 will be declared by July 31.

Attorney General K.K. Venugopal, representing the CBSE, contended that for Class 12, the marks will be based on unit test/mid-term/pre-board exam and 40 per cent weightage will be given. He added that the total marks awarded should be in consonance with the past performance of the school in Class 12 board examinations. The CBSE finalized the formula after obtaining feedback from 229 Sahodaya School Complex comprising of 7,734 schools and a 13-member committee of experts, comprising of IAS officers and education experts, constituted on June 4.

According to the policy, a result committee under the principal of the school will be formed in each school comprising of two senior most PGT from the same school and two PGT from the neighbouring schools. The committee has been given liberty to prepare the result by following the policy.

“In case where any candidate is not satisfied with the assessment done, based on the policy, such candidates will be given an opportunity to appear in examinations to be conducted by the Board, when conditions are conducive for holding the examinations. As per this policy, marks scored in the later examination will be considered as final”, said the CBSE’s affidavit.

Elaborating on the criteria for the Class 12 assessment, the CBSE said: “The computation of theory marks for Class 12 will be based on performance in one or more Unit Test(s)/Mid-Term/Pre-Board(s) theory examination. The result committee of the school may decide weightage to be given to each exam based on the credibility and reliability of the assessment. For example, if the committee may be of the considered view that only the Pre-Board exams may be taken into consideration, then full weightage can be given to that component. Similarly, another school result committee may decide to give equal weightage to Pre-Board exams and Mid-Term exams”.

Computation of Class 12 theory marks will be on the basis of the year end final theory exam in the respective subjects. “Computation of Class 10 theory marks shall be based on average theory marks obtained by the student(s) in best three performing subjects out of the main 5 subjects. This average will be uniformly awarded to all the Class 12 subjects based on theory weightage”, added the affidavit. Most counsel appearing for the students concurred with the CBSE assessment plan.

CISCE counsel J.K. Das informed the Supreme Court that it will take the performance of students in the last six years while awarding the final marks to Class 12 students.

The top court suggested there should be an inbuilt mechanism in the scheme to address grievances of students after the declaration of results. The AG said that he would consult the authorities. The top court said the two boards can go ahead and notify their evaluation schemes after incorporating the suggestions of the court.

The top court said it would hear the matter on June 21 again to find out whether any other suggestion could be placed before the CBSE for consideration.

The Supreme Court also agreed to hear petitions for the cancellation of state board examinations for Class 12 in the states of Assam, Punjab, Tripura and Andhra Pradesh.
