India tries to find solutions to climate change in its G20 meetings

As India takes on the G20 presidency with climate change as a key agenda item, it has a valuable opportunity to advance global sustainability initiatives by fostering an international consensus on what qualifies as ‘green’…reports Asian Lite News

Climate change related issues and finding its probable solutions are at the heart of ongoing G20 meetings under India’s presidency. Recently global players met in Bengaluru to discuss “Mainstreaming Climate Action in Cities”.

Three of the six current U20 priority areas — accelerating climate finance, ensuring water security, and encouraging environmentally responsive behaviour – were extensively discussed at the meeting.

The conference was organised by the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group, together with the India’s Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.

The deliberations suggested that the city governments should consider climate impacts when making budgeting decisions while leveraging public-private partnerships, municipal green bonds, and other innovative financing mechanisms where available. Further, it was deliberated that climate action plans should address water security and resilience; institutional and regulatory reforms should be considered where needed to protect and revitalize vulnerable water resources, mainstream integrated urban water resource management, ensure equitable and safe access to water and reduce risk from water-related hazards like flooding, reported NewsonAir.

The key takeaways of this conference will contribute to the U20 communiqué of recommendations, which will be presented to G20 negotiators later this year.

India’s G20 priorities include a “Green Development Pact” with a roadmap of actions over the next decade to tackle climate change and international cooperation on data for development, India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar had said.

“We would commit to drive a consensus on a Green Development Pact of the G20 Leaders, which will be a blueprint of strong actions for the next decade powering green development all over the world,” he had said earlier.

The actions will include investments in sustainable lifestyles, leveraging green hydrogen for climate action, and accelerating progress on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), he said as was reported by Hindustan Times.

As India takes on the G20 presidency with climate change as a key agenda item, it has a valuable opportunity to advance global sustainability initiatives by fostering an international consensus on what qualifies as ‘green’. This shared understanding would curb information asymmetry and prevent greenwashing while directing capital towards truly green financial activities, wrote Deccan Herald.

Additionally, it would provide a standardised approach for financial institutions, regulators, companies, investors, and policymakers to identify, develop, and finance green projects, thus facilitating India’s green finance efforts.

According to an ORF paper, there are a number of reasons why the G20 should be concerned about, and act on the issue of climate change-induced displacement:

1.       Economic Impacts: Climate change-induced displacement can have significant economic impacts on the G20 countries. For example, countries may face increased costs associated with managing the influx of refugees, including providing housing, healthcare, and social services. Additionally, large-scale and unmitigated displacement in any region of the world can have ripple effects across the global economy and cause economic instability and reduced economic growth.

2.       National Security: Displacement and migration can exacerbate existing social and political tensions and can potentially lead to conflict and instability.

3.       Historical Responsibility: The G20 comprises developed countries that have historically contributed the most to greenhouse gas emissions and therefore bear a greater responsibility for addressing climate change. Displacement is often the result of climate change impacts, such as sea-level rise or extreme weather events, that are largely caused by human activity. As such, the G20 countries should take a leadership role in relocating climate refugees and allowing them to rebuild their lives in their host countries. This is in tune with the idea of ‘common but differentiated responsibilities’ of countries in climate action.

4.       Capability: All together, the G20 countries have significant financial and technical resources that can be used to support vulnerable populations. Given the reasons outlined above, it is in the interest of the G20 countries to act on the issue of climate change-induced displacement and harness their capacities to build climate change adaptation systems.

India will take our issues to G20: Uganda

Ugandan High Commissioner Kikafunda expressed her views on India’s presidency of G20 and believes New Delhi can be the voice of Global South…writes Sahil Pandey

High Commissioner of Uganda to India Joyce Kakuramatsi Kikafunda on Saturday termed the visit of External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar to her country as beautiful and also said that India is going to be the voice of the Global South and it will bring her country’s issues to the G20.

Ugandan High Commissioner Kikafunda expressed her views on India’s presidency of G20 and believes New Delhi can be the voice of Global South.

“We believe that they (India) are going to be the voice of the South. India is already going to be a superpower. So we believe they (India) know our issues and they will bring them up and they are ahead of some big countries who have forgotten how it was. But we believe India will bring our voices, our issues or problems to the G20,” the Ugandan envoy elaborated.

Reflecting on Jaishankar’s visit, the Ugandan envoy told ANI, “The visit was beautiful. I actually accompanied him on that visit. Jaishankar had a beautiful visit. Our President doesn’t meet other ministers, he meets heads of state, but because of the relationship between Uganda and India, he met the visiting minister. India Opened the University of Forensic Sciences in Uganda for the first time ever outside India and the first one in Africa. So we are very proud and happy about it. It was a very good visit. The Minister of Foreign Affairs was very happy. And the minister left very happy and said that he loved Uganda and he will come back.”

Notably, EAM Jaishankar was on a visit to Uganda and Mozambique from April 10-15 to further strengthen India’s “strong bilateral relations” with the two countries.

She also spoke on the bilateral relationship between India and Uganda, “Our bilateral relationships are very good and strong, and they are focused on trade and investment,” Kikafunda added.

The envoy also mentioned that Uganda sees India as an elder brother and wants the relationship to continue along with development assistance.

“We don’t want just to trade, we want India to come and manufacture products in Uganda. We want the relationship to continue, also the development assistance, because we take India as our elder brother,” she added.

Kikafunda was participating in a women entrepreneurs conference hosted by Baroness Verma (Member of the House of Lords of the UK) on Saturday. (ANI)

Peru hails India’s efforts to empower Global South in G20

Both sides reviewed their traditionally friendly relations and discussed ways to take forward cooperation in areas of mutual interest, including trade and investments…reports Asian Lite News

Peru on Saturday complimented India for giving voice to the South in the G20 and inviting President Dina Boluarte to participate in the Voice of Global South Summit, held earlier this year, according to a Ministry of External Affairs press release.

On Saturday, the 2nd India-Peru Joint Commission Meeting was co-chaired by Saurabh Kumar, Secretary (East) and Ignacio Higueras, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of Peru, in New Delhi.

Both sides reviewed their traditionally friendly relations and discussed ways to take forward cooperation in areas of mutual interest, including trade and investments, health and pharma, traditional medicines, mines & minerals, energy & renewables, science & technology, agriculture, defence, space, capacity building, education, culture and people to people exchanges, added the release.

They also discussed regional and multilateral issues of current relevance and took note of cooperation between the two countries in multilateral forums and international organizations.

Both sides agreed to exchange visits and organize a series of trade, cultural, educational, and other bilateral events as part of the celebrations to commemorate the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations, read the release.

Notably, Peru has been in peril and gripped by protests and political intrigue since the ouster of its former president, Pedro Castillo on December 7.

Peru’s security forces imposed a 30-day state of emergency on December 14, banning demonstrations, curtailing freedom of movement and allowing police to search homes without a warrant.

Dina Boluarte, who served as Castillo’s vice-president, was sworn into office on Dec. 7, the same day Castillo was ousted.

She is the country’s first female president and was not a high-profile politician before gaining power.

She’s supported a plan to push up the 2024 elections for president and Congress initially scheduled for 2026. She’s also supported judicial investigations into whether security forces acted with excessive force.

Jaishankar’s African visit

India is making efforts to include concerns of the Global South in the G20 framework under its presidency, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said in Uganda’s Kampala.

Jaishankar, who visited Uganda and Mozambique last week, addressed members of the Parliamentary Forum on Indian Affairs in Uganda. “We (India) are doing it differently in the sense that no other chair of G-20 made an effort to consult all the countries of the Global South and ask it saying, look, you are not on the table. So what is your interest, what are the things you want? What are your concerns that we can put on the table on your behalf? We went through this very, very detailed, very exhaustive exercise in the month of January,” he said

The External Affairs Minister also stated that India would like to use its G-20 presidency to get the influential forum focused on its mandate of global growth and development issues.

“And of course, naturally, Uganda was participant as well. And today we would like to use the G-20 presidency really to get that forum to focus on what is its remedy, what was its mandate, which is global growth and global development issues, which are very important for you. Issues of green growth, issues of debt, issues of health, issues of SDG, developmental agenda, issues of digital delivery. I think all these are really the issues on which we would like the G-20 to focus,” Jaishankar said.

India assumed the Presidency of the G20 for one year from December 1 last year. The G20 Summit will be held in New Delhi on September 9-10 this year.

External Affairs Minister reiterated India’s full support to Uganda for a very successful chairship of the Non-Alignment Movement.

Uganda was endorsed to chair the Non-Aligned Movement on behalf of Africa for the period from 2022 to 2025.

The NAM chair position rotates every three years during summit conferences. The chair of the movement is assisted by both the former and incoming chairs. According to the movement, this structure represents its past, present and future. (ANI)
