20 US Lawmakers Urge Biden to Extend Gaza Ceasefire

The letter comes in lieu of the announcement of a temporary four-day ceasefire in Gaza in return for the safe transfer of 50 hostages taken by Hamas during the October 7 attack….reports Asian Lite News

President Joe Biden received a letter from more than 20 Michigan lawmakers urging him to “advance a lasting ceasefire” between Israel and the Hamas militant group, reported The Hill.

The letter comes in lieu of the announcement of a temporary four-day ceasefire in Gaza in return for the safe transfer of 50 hostages taken by Hamas during the October 7 attack.

The ceasefire was announced in a statement by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday.

A post shared on Netanyahu’s X, formerly Twitter, page stated, “Tonight, the Government has approved the outline of the first stage of achieving this goal, according to which at least 50 hostages – women and children – will be released over four days, during which a pause in the fighting will be held.”

Similarly, the US President, taking to his social media X, declared that he was glad the deal was secured, adding that he was grateful that the hostages would be reunited with their families.

“I welcome the deal to secure the release of hostages taken by Hamas during its brutal assault against Israel on October 7th.” The US president said. “I’m gratified that these brave souls, who have endured an unspeakable ordeal, will be reunited with their families once this deal is fully implemented.”

The lawmakers said that the temporary ceasefire deal between the two sides is a “positive step forward”. However, Michigan lawmakers still believe that this is not a sufficient enough deal., reported The Hill.

The letter sent by the state lawmakers noted that international organizations — including the United Nations, World Health Organization, and UNICEF- faith leaders, elected officials, and community leaders have all called for a ceasefire in the conflict, urging for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages.

“Some aid has been able to enter Gaza since October 21, but there continue to be insufficient supplies of water, food, medicine, and blood,” the letter reads. “According to the World Health Organization, 20 of Gaza’s hospitals are no longer functioning. Over 1 million residents have been displaced from their homes in Gaza, leading to a growing humanitarian crisis.”

The letter also highlights some of the atrocities that have been committed in Gaza, mentioning that many of the actions that have taken place” are prohibited by the Geneva Convention.

The letter was signed by 25 state lawmakers, including state Democrat Representative Abraham Aiyash, who is the majority leader of Michigan state’s House chamber.

“Today, I joined 25 other Michigan House and Senate colleagues pressing President Biden for a lasting ceasefire,” Aiyash wrote in a post to X, a social media platform formerly known as Twitter.

“Bombing children will not bring peace. An end to violence is the only way to legitimately address the occupation and bring lasting peace for Palestinians and Israelis alike,” Aiyash added. “We must advance and lasting and durable ceasefire to end the bombing and devastation in Gaza.”

With the transfer of hostages during the ceasefire, Palestinian prisoners will also be released from Israeli jail, per Hamas’s demands, The Hill reported.

An Israeli source has stated that the four-day lull in fighting, would be on hold and that Israeli military operations in Gaza would continue as long as the agreement is not finalized.

The delay is a blow to families who are desperate to see their abducted children, spouses, daughters, and sisters return after close to 50 days as Hamas hostages. (ANI)

Qatar Sets Stage for Ceasefire Announcement in Gaza

The Israeli cabinet, in an extended meeting into Wednesday morning, has officially endorsed an agreement with Hamas….reports Asian Lite News

Qatar, which helped broker an agreement between Israel and Hamas for a four-day humanitarian pause in their ongoing war in Gaza, announced on Wednesday that the effective date of the ceasefire will be announced within 24 hours.

The “starting time of the pause will be announced within the next 24 hours”, the BBC quoted the Qatar government as saying in a statement.

The pause will then last for four days, the statement said, adding that it will be “subject to extension”.

The latest development comes after the Israeli cabinet — after a lengthy meeting that ran into the early hours of Wednesday — approved the agreement with Hamas to secure the release of 50 hostages being held in Gaza since the October 7 attack.

“The government of Israel is obligated to return home all of the hostages… The government has approved the outline of the first stage of achieving this goal, according to which at least 50 hostages – women and children – will be released over four days, during which a pause in the fighting will be held,” the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement.

“The release of every additional 10 hostages will result in one additional day in the pause. The government of Israel, the IDF and the security services will continue the war in order to return home all of the hostages, complete the elimination of Hamas and ensure that there will be no new threat to the State of Israel from Gaza,” it added.

The agreement will also allow hundreds of lorries of humanitarian, medical and fuel aid to enter all parts of the Gaza Strip via Egypt’s Rafah crossing.

Those opposed to the truce however, warned the Israeli Cabinet that this partial hostage deal would derail the process of securing all those in captivity and that it would complicate the military offensive against the militant group in Gaza.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu however dismissed the scepticism and said: “ We are at war and continue to be at war until our objectives are met including destroy Hamas and all our captives are released.”

Meanwhile, an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesman said on Wednesday morning that the military is still working out details for the pause in fighting included in the hostage release deal.

IDF spokesperson Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus told CNN: “Until we are told to do so by the Israeli government, we will continue fighting Hamas and when such a deal will come into effect, we will respect that. But we will be very vigilant on the ground.”

The spokesman also warned that he feared Hamas will use the pause in fighting to resupply and regroup.

“Of course we would rather continue to apply pressure on Hamas. But this pause is for a very important cause. I can assure that we will be respectful of any agreement, that we will honor the commitments made by the Israeli government,” he told CNN.

Hailing the move, US President Joe Biden said in a statement that “I welcome the deal to secure the release of hostages taken by the terrorist group Hamas during its brutal assault against Israel on October 7″.

“Jill and I have been keeping all those held hostage and their loved ones close to our hearts these many weeks, and I am extraordinarily gratified that some of these brave souls, who have endured weeks of captivity and an unspeakable ordeal, will be reunited with their families once this deal is fully implemented.

“Today’s deal should bring home additional American hostages, and I will not stop until they are all released,” the statement added.

Wednesday’s development comes more than a week after a major breakthrough was reached on November 12 when the Hamas — after refusing for days — had relented in offering identifying information about several dozen hostages, such as their age, gender and nationalities.

The information confirmed that numerous children and toddlers had been taken captive on October 7.

Israeli authorities have said that there are at least 236 hostages being held in Gaza

South Africa Hosts BRICS Meeting Amid Gaza Crisis

United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres will participate in the virtual meeting…reports Asian Lite News

Amid the ongoing situation in Gaza, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa will host the BRICS groups of nations to convene a virtual BRICS Extraordinary Joint Meeting on Monday, the South African President Office said.

In a major development, United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres will also participate in the virtual meeting.

As per the press statement, in the meeting, the South African President will deliver an opening speech, followed by speeches from invited states and members on the current humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Later in the meeting, a joint statement on the situation in the Middle East with particular reference to Gaza will be adopted.

Leaders of BRICS countries, Brazil, Russia, India and China will join the virtual Extraordinary Meeting with invited BRICS leaders of Saudi Arabia, Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates, said the press statement.

Israel announced war against Hamas after it launched attack on Israel on October 7 and killed about 1,200 people, mostly civilians, with around 240 people taken hostage, according to Israeli officials.

South Africa has long been a vocal supporter of the Palestinian cause, with the ruling African National Congress (ANC) party often linking it to its own struggle against apartheid.

The South African government has said it will recall all diplomats from Israel to “signal” its concern over the situation in Gaza, Al Jazeera reported.

Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, a minister in the president’s office, said on Monday that all diplomatic staff in Tel Aviv would be called to return to Pretoria for consultations, without providing further details.

Pretoria has long been a vocal supporter of the Palestinian cause, with the ruling African National Congress (ANC) party often linking it to its own earlier struggle against apartheid.

China has historically been sympathetic to the Palestinians and supportive of a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Beijing has been calling for an immediate ceasefire since the start of the war last month.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has accused the West of stoking tensions in the Middle East, and criticised Israel for its conduct in the conflict. (ANI)

Israeli Forces Uncover 35 Gaza Tunnels, Seize Weapons

The army reported on Sunday morning that over the past 24 hours, soldiers engaged Hamas militants on the outskirts of Jabaliya….reports Asian Lite News

Israeli soldiers discovered 35 tunnel shafts and seized weapons in northern Gaza, the Israel Defence Forces announced on Sunday.

The shafts and tunnels were discovered during raids on the homes of Hamas officials in Gaza’s upscale Rimal and Sheikh Ejalin neighbourhoods. A number of Hamas militants were killed in the fighting.

Israeli forces also raided a Hamas military camp, where ammunition depots and seven rocket launchers were uncovered.

The army reported on Sunday morning that over the past 24 hours, soldiers engaged Hamas militants on the outskirts of Jabaliya.

A militant cell preparing to fire on troops from the roof of a residential building was eliminated in an air strike, according to the IDF. Weapons and military equipment were also found in residential buildings in the neighbourhood.

Israeli Navy commandos assisted ground forces from their position off the Gaza coast, attacking Hamas targets “using thousands of munitions from the sea” and assisting ground forces “with fire and observation by opening axes, escorting with fire, thwarting land threats against our forces and providing cover for land missions from the sea,” according to the IDF.

3 Hamas Commanders Killed

Three Hamas commanders were killed during overnight combat in Gaza, Israel Defence Forces announced on Monday morning.

According to the IDF, the soldiers identified a squad as they entered a munitions warehouse. The soldiers called in an airstrike, killing the militants and destroying the building and its weapons.

On Thursday evening, IDF presented CCTV footage of at least three hostages being brought into Shifa Hospital, under which Hamas has built terror infrastructure.

IDF Spokesperson Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari said intelligence confirmed that Hamas militants “quickly” murdered Cpl. Noa Marciano at Shifa, after she was taken there with non-life-threatening injuries sustained during her captivity.

Marciano, a resident of Modi’in in central Israel, was abducted from Kibbutz Nahal Oz, where she served as a lookout.

On Friday, the IDF said it recovered her body from a building adjacent to Shifa. A day earlier, the military announced that soldiers had located and recovered the body of Yehudit Weiss, 65, from a nearby building.

In addition to Marciano, two hostages from Nepal and Thailand were hidden at Shifa Hospital in the immediate aftermath of the Oct. 7 massacre, said Hagari.

“The evidence I will share was sent by Israel through diplomatic channels to the countries of these civilians…. Hamas was hiding hostages and murdering hostages inside Shifa Hospital. Hamas was building tunnels under hospitals.”

Hagari proceeded to show footage of Hamas militants bringing two non-Israeli captives into the hospital by military jeep. “We have not yet located these hostages and have not rescued them,” he noted.

“The world must remember: Hamas is holding hostage the elderly, men, women, children and babies. The Israel Defense Forces has a moral obligation to bring everyone home. We will not rest until we do,” added Hagari.

At least 1,200 people were killed in Hamas’s attacks on Israeli communities near the Gaza border on Oct. 7. Another 240 men, women, children and soldiers were taken back to Gaza as hostages. Some people remain unaccounted for as Israeli authorities continue to identify bodies and search for human remains. (ANI/TPS)

Mixed Battalion Engages in Gaza Combat

A mixed force from the “Shahar” Battalion in the Rescue and Training Brigade of the Home Front Command joined the ground forces’ activity in Gaza…reports Asian Lite News

For the first time a mixed-gender battalion of combat and rescue fighters is fighting inside the Gaza Strip, the Israel Defense Forces announced on Sunday

A mixed force from the “Shahar” Battalion in the Rescue and Training Brigade of the Home Front Command joined the ground forces’ activity in Gaza, the IDF said.

The female and male fighters of the battalion joined brigade combat teams in the 162nd division for tasks such as scanning buildings and locating weapons in the area of the Shati refugee camp. The camp is a Hamas stronghold in northern Gaza.

During a raid on a hotel where Hamas terrorists were hiding, soldiers also uncovered an underground floor in a hotel where intelligence material was found.

The Shahar Battalion’s engineers also advise ground soldiers on the safety of damaged buildings they consider entering. (ANI/TPS)

US Senator Says Gaza Civilian Toll ‘Too High’

Expressing worry, Murphy emphasized that if Israel’s objective is to overcome Hamas, the present level of civilian casualties not only incurs a moral toll but also holds strategic consequences….reports Asian Lite News

A US Senator has emphasised the “vital” importance of Israel conducting a more precise offensive in the Gaza Strip to minimise civilian casualties. Chris Murphy, a Democratic member of the influential Senate Foreign Relations Committee, told AFP that the current civilian death toll is excessively high, stressing the need for a more “surgical” approach.

Expressing concern, Murphy highlighted that if Israel’s strategy aims to defeat Hamas, the current rate of civilian casualties not only bears a moral cost but also carries strategic implications. He emphasised the significance of adopting a strategy that minimises harm to civilians while pursuing the ultimate goal of confronting militant groups.

Meanwhile, a Palestinian source has told media that the chances of reaching an agreement on a temporary ceasefire in Gaza under the condition of the release of hostages are increasing with intense mediation efforts made by Qatar, Egypt and the US.

The unnamed source said that the “humanitarian truce” expected to last for one to three days in exchange for the release of hostages held in Gaza may be announced in the coming hours or days, Xinhua news agency reported.

Earlier on Wednesday, in a meeting with officials of the West Bank settlements, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reaffirmed that his government will not agree to a ceasefire in Gaza unless the hostages seized by Hamas during its October 7 attack are freed.

Israel struck Gaza in retaliation for a cross-border Hamas attack on southern Israel on October 7, during which Hamas militants took about 240 hostages. The bloody conflict, raging for over a month, has led to the deaths of at least 10,569 Palestinians in Gaza and killed 1,400 people in Israel, the vast majority in the October 7 Hamas attack.

Riyadh To Host Meet on Gaza

Saudi Arabia’s Investment Minister Khalid Al-Falih indicated the imminent arrangement of both an emergency Arab summit in Riyadh and an Islamic summit in the coming days…reports Asian Lite News

Saudi Arabia is all set to facilitate diplomatic discussions by hosting key summits involving Arab and Islamic nations to address an ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, according to Khalid Al-Falih, the Kingdom’s investment minister.

Speaking at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum in Singapore, Al-Falih indicated the imminent arrangement of both an emergency Arab summit in Riyadh and an Islamic summit in the coming days. These discussions align with an earlier announced meeting by the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) set to take place to address the conflict on Sunday.

However, a statement from the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday detailed the postponement of a third meeting initially planned for the weekend, bringing together leaders from the Arab League and the African Union.

This delay aims to prioritize the focus on the other two summits, which are part of Saudi Arabia’s leadership objective to steer these diplomatic gatherings toward a peaceful resolution of the conflict, as expressed by Al-Falih.

Additionally, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi is anticipated to participate in the OIC summit hosted in Saudi Arabia, according to reports by Etemadonline news. Al-Falih also mentioned plans for a summit involving African nations, yet a specific date for this gathering was not disclosed. These efforts demonstrate a concentrated and multilateral approach towards seeking resolutions and fostering dialogue among nations affected by the conflict.

Jordan rejects talks on post-war Gaza plans

Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi has declined any potential talks on post-conflict scenarios in Gaza, describing such discourse as “unrealistic and unacceptable,” the media reported.

He made the remarks on Wednesday during a seminar attended by journalists and writers in the capital Amman, where he reaffirmed Jordan’s priority of calling for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, Xinhua news agency reported.

Safadi stressed on Jordan’s unwavering position against any “fragmented solutions” to the Gaza crisis.

He warned that dealing with issues in Gaza separately from that in the West Bank would “play into Israel’s hands,” which could potentially undermine the Palestinian cause and the Palestinians’ aspirations for statehood.

The Minister called for a comprehensive approach to the Palestinian cause, advocating for a political and just peace that ensures Palestinian rights and the establishment of their sovereign state based on the two-state solution.

Safadi reiterated the kingdom’s firm rejection of any forced displacement of Palestinians from their lands, equating it to “declaring war against Jordan that would be forcefully countered”.

40K People Moved to Southern Gaza

The UN Relief Works Agency (UNRWA) said that since the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) created periodic evacuation “corridors” earlier this month, at least 40,000 people have walked from northern Gaza to the besieged enclave’s southern regions.

The IDF has repeatedly called on civilians to move south of Wadi Gaza — a waterway bisecting the center of the enclave — as it intensifies its assault on Hamas in Gaza City and northern Gaza.

The UNRWA said that UN monitors and NGOs are providing water and biscuits to evacuees just south of the Wadi Gaza.

For a fifth consecutive day on Wednesday, the Israeli military opened the “corridor” along the main traffic artery, Salah Ad Deen Road, for residents to leave the north between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., which was then extended by an hour, as people were still moving southwards.

It is estimated that about 50,000 people evacuated during the day, the largest number since the corridor opened, bringing the estimated figure since November 5 to 72,000.

Most evacuees move on foot and those who use vehicles leave them at the southern edge of Gaza city at the Al Kuwaiti roundabout.

The evacuees then walk 4-5 km down the corridor, with an estimated distance of up to 20 km for those traveling farthest, according to the UNRWA.

Since the war broke out on October 7, about 1.5 million people in Gaza have been internally displaced, according to the UN agency.

Of them, nearly 725,000 are sheltering in 149 UNRWA facilities; 122,000 in hospitals, churches and public buildings; 131,134 in 94 non-UNRWA schools, and the remainder with host families.

UAE Expedites Gaza Hospital Construction

The UAE has sent 6 additional aircraft to support and speed up the construction of a field hospital in Gaza to support the Palestinian people….reports Asian Lite News

The UAE yesterday sent six additional aircraft carrying supplies and equipment to support the construction of the field hospital, set to be established in the Gaza Strip. The aircraft, which departed from Abu Dhabi and are bound for Al-Arish International Airport, Egypt, are part of the UAE’s Operation “Gallant Knight 3”, launched by the UAE to support the Palestinian people.

The UAE sent five aircraft, which arrived at Al-Arish International Airport earlier this week, carrying the equipment and supplies required to operate the field hospital, in line with the UAE’s drive to alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian people and support the health sector in the Gaza Strip.

The field hospital, with a 150-bed capacity, is set to be established in multiple stages. It will encompass departments for general surgery, orthopaedics, paediatrics, and gynaecology, in addition to anaesthesia and intensive care units catering to both children and adults. The facility will also house clinics for internal medicine, dentistry, psychiatry, and family medicine. Supplementary services will include CT imaging, a laboratory, a pharmacy, and other medical support functions.

The UAE previously announced the provision of urgent aid to the Palestinian people, amounting to $20 million, and an initiative to bring approximately 1,000 Palestinian children from the Gaza Strip – accompanied by their families – for medical treatment at UAE hospitals. Additionally, a community relief campaign for Palestinians affected by the current conflict has been launched in the UAE under the slogan ‘Compassion for Gaza’.

‘Average of 160 kids dying per day’

The World Health Organization (WHO) said that as the raging Israel-Hamas conflict has completed a month since it erupted on October 7, more than 10,000 people, or some 0.5 per cent of the total population in the besieged enclave, have reportedly been killed, with an average of 160 children dying per day.

So far, 16 health workers have been killed on duty, and the WHO is working to support health workers in Gaza and once again pleading for their safety, the world body’s spokesperson Christian Lindmeier said during a press briefing in Geneva.

Lindmeier said 102 attacks against healthcare had been recorded in Gaza, 121 in the West Bank, and 25 in Israel. At the moment, 14 hospitals in Gaza were not functioning, due to the lack of fuel or the damages, he added.

Noting that Tuesday marked a month since the war, the WHO official said that people in the Jewish nation were frightened and worried about more than 200 hostages, reiterating the call for the immediate release of all the hostages, many of whom need urgent medical attention.

He also said that some doctors in Gaza have been performing operations, including amputations, without anesthesia. “Nothing justifies the horror being endured by civilians in Gaza,” Lindmeier said, stressing their “desperate need for water, fuel, food and safe access to health care to survive”.

The WHO spokesman reiterated the UN’s calls for “unhindered, safe and secure access” for some 500 trucks of aid a day — not only across the border but also “all the way through to the patients in the hospitals”, where surgeries including amputations were being performed without anesthesia.

The level of death and suffering is “hard to fathom”, he added.

According to the Gaza-based Palestinian Health Ministry, the death toll since the beginning of the conflict stood at 10,328 as of Wednesday morning, with 24,408 people injured. Of the total fatalities, 67 per cent are said to be children and women, the Ministry said, adding that some 2,450 people, including 1,350 kids, have been reported missing and may be trapped or dead under the rubble.

Overall, about 1,400 Israelis and foreign nationals have been killed in the Jewish nation, according to authorities.  The names of 1,159 of these fatalities have been released, including 828 civilians. The death toll among Israeli soldiers in Gaza remains 30, official Israeli sources have confirmed.

Some 240 people are held captive in Gaza, including Israelis and foreign nationals. Media reports indicate that about 30 of the hostages are children. So far, four civilian hostages have been released by Hamas, and a female Israeli soldier was rescued by Israeli forces. Hamas has claimed that 57 of the hostages were killed by Israeli airstrikes.

Canadian Sikh Poet Rupi Kaur Snubs Biden’s Diwali Invite in Gaza Protest

Kaur implored other South Asians in the US to do the same and hold the Biden administration accountable in the wake of the spiralling civilian death toll….reports Asian Lite News

Indo-Canadian Sikh poet Rupi Kaur has declined an invitation for a Diwali event on Wednesday from US President Joe Biden’s administration over its response to the situation in Gaza.

“I decline any invitation from an institution that supports the collective punishment of a trapped civilian population—50 per cent of whom are children,” Kaur, 31, wrote in a statement posted on X on Monday.

“I’m surprised this administration finds it acceptable to celebrate Diwali, when their support of the current atrocities against Palestinians represent the exact opposite of what this holiday means to many of us,” the author of “Milk and Honey” said.

Gaza’s Ministry of Health said on Monday that the Palestinian death toll has crossed 10,000, including 4,104 children, with no signs of a ceasefire in the besieged enclave.

In addition, 16 of Gaza’s 35 hospitals, running low on fuel supplies, have been forced to suspend operations, and according to the UN, more than 1.5 million people — more than half of Gaza’s population — have been displaced since Hamas launched its war against Israel on October 7.

Kaur implored other South Asians in the US to do the same and hold the Biden administration accountable in the wake of the spiralling civilian death toll.

“I implore my South Asian community to hold this administration accountable. As a Sikh woman, I will not allow my likeness to be used in whitewashing this administration’s actions.”

Kaur, who immigrated to Canada from Punjab at the age of four with her parents, said: “We must not be tokenized by their photo-ops. When a government’s actions dehumanize people anywhere in the world, it is our moral imperative to call for justice.”

The Diwali event is being hosted by America’s Indian-origin Vice President Kamala Harris.

Among Sikhs, Diwali is celebrated as Bandi Chhor Divas (Day of Liberation), commemorating their sixth guru, Guru Hargobind Sahib, who helped free 52 fellow political prisoners from unjust imprisonment by a Mughal emperor.

“I have always used this day to reflect on what it means to fight for freedom against oppression. Today, the American government is not only funding the bombardment of Gaza, they continue to justify this genocide against Palestinians regardless of how many refugee camps, health facilities, and places of worship are blown to bits,” Kaur wrote.

Kaur, whose work encompasses love, loss, trauma, healing, femininity, and migration, also urged her followers to sign petitions, join boycotts and attend protests in support of a ceasefire.

Her collections have sold over 11 million copies and have been translated into over 43 languages, with “Milk and Honey” surpassing Homer’s “Odyssey” as the best-selling poetry of all time.

She was also regarded as “writer of the decade” by the New Republic and recognised on the Forbes 30 under 30 list.

In 2022, Kaur released her fourth book, “Healing Through Word”.

Earlier this year, her X account (formerly Twitter) was withheld in India over the Khalistan issue
