Meanwhile, yesterday’s “AI Super Tuesday” event, dedicated to AI technologies and innovations, presented the most groundbreaking innovations helping shape the future of society and industry.

As AI takes centre stage in drug discovery, the world could soon witness the most significant shift in medicine since the advent of modern pharmaceuticals. But with such rapid advancements, a mesmerising Tuesday session – ‘The Next Leap in Medicine: Are we on the Edge of a Breakthrough?’ – saw experts discuss whether AI transformation is fast approaching or further away than some anticipate.

Dr. Shameer Khader, Global Head and Executive Director – Computational Biology Cluster, Precision Medicine and Computational Biology at global pharmaceutical company Sanofi, said, “Drug discovery on average takes 10-15 years and one project around $1.5-2 billion in cost. Is that something sustainable? The model must change, and we should harness AI capabilities and value across the ecosystem. We should optimise every single process to reduce development costs, streamline the drug discovery lifestyle, and build data disease models and infrastructure.”

In a special case study, audiences became acquainted with ‘BabyX’ – an interactive simulation of a lifelike infant through AI. This virtual animated baby learns and reacts like a human infant with a built-in virtual brain with a detailed likeness to that of a human.

Functioning through biological AI and an operating system called Brain Language, stimulated neurochemical reactions help BabyX decide how she will react – something that could prove revolutionary in the future AI economy.

Elsewhere on the Super AI Tuesday agenda, another applauded show illustrated how high-performance computing is steering humanity’s quest for the next generation of aircraft. During ‘Quantum Maturation: Introducing The “Quantum Mobility Quest”, companies were urged to move beyond the physical limits of present-day

GITEX Global Weighs in on Sustainability, Smart Homes

GITEX Global facilitates the biggest public-private partnership projects, with 250 government entities looking to collaborate on e-government and digital government initiatives….reports Asian Lite News

Last year, the UAE announced the “UAE Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative”, a national drive to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, making the Emirates the first Middle East and North African nation to do so. At GITEX Global 2023, Faisal Ali Rashid, Senior Director, Energy Demand Side Management, UAE’s Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, highlighted the successes in executing this mission.

Rashid said the UAE is transitioning from a linear to a circular economy. As part of this transition, the UAE has established a Circular Economy Committee comprising public and private sector members to promote investments in circularity and accelerate the adoption of circular economy practices.

Reimagining Public Services in the Digital Age

GITEX Global facilitates the biggest public-private partnership projects, with 250 government entities looking to collaborate on e-government and digital government initiatives. The Smart Government market was estimated  to be worth nearly US$30 billion in 2022, with an anticipated value of $110 billion by 2029 at a 21 percent annual growth rate.

In a session titled “Reimagining government in the digital age: Transforming public services for the future”, Lord McNicol, Member of the House of Lords, UK Parliament, was joined by other panellists, including Alby Bocanegra, Founder and Former CTO of NYC, The Urban Futurist, Kristina Ishmael, Deputy Director, Office of Educational Technology, U.S. Department of Education and Mikko Rusama, Former Chief Digital Officer at the City of Helsinki.

They spoke on the role of digital technologies in transforming public services for the future and emphasised the need for a proactive, data-centric approach to public service provision. The panellists highlighted the benefits of Open Data policies which allow organisations to collect data, monitor it, and make well-informed decisions on the services they provide and how they work for the citizens.

Quantum Computing Heralds new Age of Productivity

Integrating AI and quantum computing into hybrid cloud workflows is heralding a new frontier in digital transformation. Headline exhibitors at GITEX Global 2023, including IBM, Dell Technologies, Microsoft, AWS, HPE and Canadian-based startup Xanadu, say quantum computing – an area of computer science that uses qubits (quantum bits) instead of classical computing bits, delivering huge leaps in processing power – can address the world’s biggest problems.

While still in development, quantum computers’ mind-boggling calculation ability can transform multiple industries, from cybersecurity, telecommunications, and healthcare, to mobility, finance and defence. Boston Consulting Group, a management consultancy, estimates quantum computers could improve the operating income of their users by between $450 billion and $850 billion a year by 2050.

Mohammed Amin, Senior Vice President at Dell Technologies for Central Eastern Europe, Middle East, Turkey, and Africa, said to fully capitalise on this transformative technology, businesses must invest in quantum computing and empower their data. “By piloting quantum computing and integrating it strategically into their operations, businesses can stay at the forefront of technological progress and seize the unparalleled opportunities it presents in propelling innovation and advancing processes,” he added.

Peter Oganesean, the Managing Director of HP Middle East, said recent advances in quantum computing, along with its increased accessibility, will have significant implications in sectors such as cybersecurity, medicine, finance, and many more. “Representing the next breakthrough in IT, this technology holds the promise of finding answers to some of our most pressing scientific challenges, such as genome profiling and finding treatments for disease at incredible speeds,” he added.

Xanadu Founder and CEO Christian Weedbrook Weedbrook said that the company is working with car brands such as BMW and Volkswagen on quantum chemistry to develop the next generation of EV batteries. He estimates quantum computing will be, in the next couple of years, where ChatGPT is today in investment and interest. “It really will change the world and I am looking forward to being part of that,” he stated.

To demonstrate its technical capability, Xanadu’s quantum computer Borealis went head-to-head last year with Japanese Fugaku, the world’s fastest supercomputer, to solve a complex mathematical formula. It would have taken Fugaku 7 million years to solve this problem. Borealis cracked the same problem in two minutes.

GITEX Global 2022 kicked off today at the Dubai World Trade Centre, with the participation of 5,000 exhibitors spanning 26 halls and two million sq. ft of exhibition space, with a notable increase of 25 percent year-on-year.

The 42nd edition of GITEX will converge the most advanced companies and best minds to dive deep into the making of the Web3 economy, as it covers seven diverse technology topics across the areas of metaverse, a decentralised future of the internet, and a sustainable global digital economy.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, yesterday took to his Twitter account to welcome international delegates and technology companies to Gitex Global 2022.

“The world’s largest technology exhibition will kick off tomorrow over an area of two million square feet with the participation of 5,000 companies from 90 countries. Among participating companies are 35 startups that are valued at $1 billion each,” Sheikh Mohammad said.

“Gitex Global, which started in 1981, has put Dubai on the global technology map and put technology at the top of Dubai’s priorities,” he added.

The five-day event’s record size and continued expansion mirrors the ambitions of the UAE and the region’s digital transformation movement, as government initiatives such as the National Programme for Coders, the Dubai Metaverse Strategy, and Next GenFDI propels the UAE to the forefront of the global digital economy.

GITEX unifies the participation of 250 government entities leading strategic digital projects and public-private partnerships, with Digital Dubai Authority and Abu Dhabi Digital Authority among the UAE government bodies advancing smart city and digital projects.

The GITEX 3.0 edition features seven tech themes: North Star Dubai start-ups, Ai Everything, Future Blockchain Summit in association with VARA, Fintech Surge, Marketing Mania and two new launches Global DevSlam and X-Verse.

e& to join metaverse club

e&, formerly known as Etisalat Group, is set to enthral stand goers at GITEX Global 2022 by inviting them to enter the next digital universe with the soft launch of their virtual world, e& universe. This move marks a significant achievement in the Group’s transformation journey to a global technology and investment conglomerate, as it takes its first steps into the metaverse.

Hatem Dowidar, Group CEO, e& shares his views on why telcos must adopt the metaverse in enhancing customer experience and boosting digitalisation journeys of enterprises.

Metaverse technology may be in the early incubation stages, given that it needs high-bandwidth and low-latency communications to work at scale. Still, telcos must consider harnessing its potential for the betterment of lives, whether it is a virtual playground or shopping destination, or even using it as a training ground for smarter, more efficient AI and industrial manufacturing processes. To get it to work at the grand scale we all envision will require robust connectivity solutions. This is where 5G becomes the fulcrum, given that mobile networks may not be able to handle the metaverse network demands.

According to a report by Ericsson, 5G is a critical enabler for the metaverse and its entire ecosystem as it has global reach, including roaming capabilities. For the cloud and edge-cloud (MEC) capabilities of the metaverse, 5G also offers low latency, offload processing and enhanced render level of detail (LOD).To harness the power of the metaverse, telcos must expand beyond their traditional capabilities and more towards embracing a growth mindset where they are open to exploring innovative ideas. In fact, telcos can play a more prominent role in the metaverse value chain by leveraging emerging technologies such as 5G, edge cloud, analytics and Artificial Intelligence (AI).
