Gujarat Giants Clinch Ultimate Kho Kho Season 2 Title

Despite battling bouts of inconsistency during the league phase, Gujarat Giants were superb on the day as they closed off the contest in the first innings itself. …reports Asian Lite News

Gujarat Giants became champions of Ultimate Kho Kho Season 2 with a 31-26 victory over Chennai Quick Guns at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Cuttack on Saturday.

Despite battling bouts of inconsistency during the league phase, Gujarat Giants were superb on the day as they closed off the contest in the first innings itself. Chennai Quick Guns, who were favourites coming into the match, will rue their failure to get going from the onset. That meant that a superb comeback in the final turn was not enough.

“I watch Kho Kho on television but being here live is electrifying,” said Shri Misra. “Watching this live, you realise how difficult the game is, but also how simple the game is. It is fascinating that these boys who come from relatively less privileged backgrounds are doing such a marvellous job.”

Gujarat Giants took home a purse of Rs 1 crore while Chennai Quick Guns received Rs 50 lakhs. Odisha Juggernauts, who finished third by defeating Telugu Yoddhas earlier, received Rs 30 lakhs.

Gujarat Giants made a superb start to the match, sending back Chennai Quick Guns’ prime batch of Ramji Kashyap, Madan and Vijay Shinde in no time. They embraced the strategy of targeting Ramji early and that proved to be a masterstroke as the latter failed to last a minute. Madan also went back relatively early. While Shinde held on for longer, he was unable to secure a dream run point for his team. Chennai Quick Guns’ second batch did manage a dream run point, but with the score at 14-1, it was Gujarat Giants who held the advantage going into Turn 2.

They then consolidated that advantage with a superb defensive display. The first Gujarat Giants defensive batch of Suyash Gargate, Shubham Thorat and Deepak Madhav delivered five dream run points, lasting five minutes and six seconds on the mat. With only three members of the next batch staying unconquered, Gujarat Giants held a huge 12-point lead going into the second innings.

Chennai Quick Guns managed to secure three bonus points in Turn 3 but it was too little too late. With an 19-point deficit to make up in the final turn, they needed a miracle.

That miracle almost came. Chennai Quick Guns made a terrific start to Turn 4, sending back the first Gujarat Giants batch in just a minute and 17 seconds. The next batch too was dispatched fast giving the Chennai Quick Guns a glimmer of hope. But Sanket Kadam stayed unbeaten and secured the trophy for his team.

Earlier, Odisha Juggernauts secured third place by defeating Telugu Yoddhas 32-24. It was Telugu Yoddhas who held a slender 14-13 advantage at the end of the first innings. But a good Turn 3 by Odisha Juggernauts, which saw them earn 3 defensive bonus points followed by a superb show by their attackers in the final turn, saw them finish the match on top.

Gujarat Giants Surge to Second Place with Thrilling Win Over Telugu Titans

The Giants defender Deepak Singh collected an outstanding nine tackle points to help his side register a comeback victory. …reports Asian Lite News

The Gujarat Giants beat Telugu Titans 37-30 to rise to the second spot on the points table in the Pro Kabaddi League Season 10 at the DOME by NSCI in Mumbai.

The Giants defender Deepak Singh collected an outstanding nine tackle points to help his side register a comeback victory. The Titans meanwhile remain rooted to the bottom of the table and are now on a four-match losing streak.

Sehrawat kicked off the game, right off the whistle registered a Super Raid to give his side the lead. A long back and forth ensued, with both teams trading raids at regular intervals. The Titans’ raiding was hugely dependent on Sehrawat and true to form he registered over half his team’s raid points in the first half.

While the Giants formidable defence kept the Titans on their toes, in the final five minutes of the half, it was the Titans’ defense that kept them alive.

Facing an all-out, the Titans raider S. Sanjeevi capitalised on a series of errors by the Giants’ defence to stay in the game. From there they produced three Super Tackles, one after the other to not just stave an all-out but also keep the lead at the break.

Despite that first-half resistance, it didn’t take the Giants too long into the second period to inflict the first All-Out of the game as the Titans saw their lead cut down to a single point. The lead did not last long as the Giants ramped up their gameplay, and the Titans, for their part faltered. Too many defensive errors and their inability to revive Sehrawat saw them suffer a second All-Out with less than a quarter of the game to play.

Once in the lead, the Giants did not loosen their grip, as they wrapped up a brilliant and deserved come-from-behind victory

Kapp, Shafali power Delhi Capitals to 10-wicket win over Gujarat Giants

Chasing a paltry total, Shafali made a mockery of the Giants’ bowling attack and very much sealed the victory for Delhi inside the powerplay…reports Asian Lite News

A sensational fifer from Marizanne Kapp (5-15) followed by Shafali Verma’s quickfire half-century (76 off 28) powered Delhi Capitals to a convincing 10-wicket win over Gujarat Giants in a Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2023 match at the Dr. DY Patil Sports Academy, here on Saturday.

This was Delhi Capitals’ third win in four matches and they are at the second spot in the points table while Gujarat suffered their third defeat in four games to lie in fourth place.

Apart from Kapp, the likes of Shikha Pandey (3-26) and Radha Yadav (1-19) also picked crucial wickets at different stages as Delhi Capitals restricted Gujarat Giants to 105/9 in 20 overs. On the other hand, Kim Garth (32 not out off 37), Georgia Wareham (22 off 25) and Harleen Deol (20 off 14) were the only ones to make vital contributions to Gujarat.

Chasing a paltry total, Shafali made a mockery of the Giants’ bowling attack and very much sealed the victory for Delhi inside the powerplay.

Her blistering knock started with a six and a four off Tanuja Kanwar in the second over, followed by a hat-trick of fours off Kim Garth. Ashleigh Gardner, who came to bowl next wasn’t spared either as the DC opener struck two fours, and a six, with skipper Meg Lanning, also striking two boundaries in the over that yielded 22.

Two more fours, with a couple of singles, helped Shafali bring up a 19-ball fifty and then she hit two sixes off Kanwar as Delhi scored 87 in the powerplay.

Even after the powerplay, Shafali continued her demolition job and hit Mansi Joshi for two fours and a six in the seventh over. Lanning, who was happy to play the second fiddle during her 21 not out off 15, hit the winning boundary as Delhi chased down the target in just 7.1 overs.

Earlier, Gujarat Giants won the toss and opted to bat first but they were off to a disastrous start, losing five wickets inside the Power-play.

Marizanne Kapp provided Delhi Capitals with an ideal start, getting rid of four Gujarat Giants batters in her first three overs. The pacer picked the important scalps of Sabbhineni Meghana, Laura Wolvaardt and Ashleigh Gardner to put Giants on backfoot.

Another Delhi pacer Shikha Pandey also didn’t take long to make her impact in the game, getting rid of Dayalan Hemalatha in her first over to leave Gujarat in deep trouble.

Kapp continued her dominance and removed the inform batter Harleen Deol and wicket-keeper Sushma Verma in back-to-back overs to complete her five-wicket haul as Giants slipped further to 33/6 after 6.5 overs.

At that stage, Gujarat were in danger of getting bowled out soon but Kim Garth and Georgia Wareham stitched a brief but crucial stand to lead the team’s recovery. Wareham hit few boundaries and along with Garth were taking Gujarat forward but Radha Yadav removed her to dent Giants further.

Wickets were falling from the other end but Garth remained positive in her approach, hit few boundaries and along with Tanuja Kanwar (13) took Gujarat Giants to a total of 105-9 in 20 overs, which was definitely not enough.

Brief scores: Gujarat Giants 105/9 in 20 overs (Kim Garth 32 not out, Georgia Wareham 22; Marizanne Kapp 5-15, Shikha Pandey 3-26) lost to Delhi Capitals 107 for no loss in 7.1 Overs (Shafali Verma 76 not out, Meg Lanning not out 21) by 10 wickets.
