ICC Rankings: Australia, India players make massive gains

Usman Khawaja was the biggest mover, following his stunning century in the third and final Test against South Africa in Sydney…reports Asian Lite News

Australia’s star performers from their Test series win against South Africa have been richly rewarded in the latest ICC Men’s Test Player Rankings released on Wednesday while India stalwarts Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma were also the big gainers in the ODI section.

Usman Khawaja was the biggest mover, following his stunning century in the third and final Test against South Africa in Sydney — he moved up to 8th in the Men’s Test batters’ rankings.

Khawaja was unbeaten on 195, missing out on his double ton as skipper Pat Cummins declared to force a result in a rain-curtailed contest. Khawaja’s exploits saw him gain four spots and break into the top 10.

Performers from the drawn Test between Pakistan and New Zealand also made big gains, with Tom Latham, Devon Conway and Saud Shakeel making big moves.

Latham scored 71 and 62 in the second Test in Karachi and has gained a place to move to 19th. Conway’s century in the first innings also saw him move up three spots to 21. Shakeel, who scored his maiden Test ton, has gained twenty spots to move to 30.

Marnus Labuschagne continues his reign at the top of the rankings chart in the batters rankings.

In the bowling charts, Josh Hazlewood, who made a comeback in the Sydney Test, is the biggest mover. He scalped five wickets in the contest, which saw him gain six spots to move to No. 10. Cummins continues to remain the top-ranked Test bowler.

Meanwhile, Virat and Rohit moved up in the ODI batting rankings. Kohli, who scored a stunning century in India’s victory against Sri Lanka in the first ODI in Guwahati, has moved up two spots to 6th.

On the other hand, Rohit also scored an aggressive 83 and has gained a spot to sit at 8th. Sri Lankan skipper Dasun Shanaka scored a fighting ton despite his side losing and has gained 20 spots to move to 61.

Meanwhile, in the bowling charts, Mohammed Siraj is the biggest gainer after scalping two wickets in the first ODI, moving up four spots to 18.

In the T20I rankings charts, Suryakumar Yadav continues his reign at the top of the batting charts, driven by his brilliant century in the third T20I against Sri Lanka. Shakib Al Hasan remains the top-ranked all-rounder in the shortest format, while Wanindu Hasaranga is displaced by Rashid Khan as the top-ranked bowler following his struggles in the series against India.

ICC Ranking: Labuschagne equals Kohli with a career-high rating

Head earns the rise on the back of his century against the West Indies in Adelaide and the 28-year-old could jump even higher during the upcoming Test series against South Africa…reports Asian Lite News

Australia’s in-form batter Marnus Labuschagne added another feather to his crown by drawing level with India great Virat Kohli on the all-time list and bringing up a new career-high rating on the latest ICC Men’s Test Batting Rankings.

The newly-crowned No.1 Test batter in the world, Labuschagne, who claimed the top ranking from England’s Joe Root earlier this month, moved further ahead at the top of the list for Test batters following an outstanding series against the West Indies.

The 28-year-old right-hander amassed a whopping 502 runs for the two-match series, with his magnificent knock of 163 during the first innings of the second Test in Adelaide helping Labuschagne join Kohli on a career-high rating of 937 points.

That brilliant performance sees Labuschagne now hold the equal 11th-best Test rating of all time and just three Australian players — Donald Bradman (961), Steve Smith (947) and Ricky Ponting (942) — have held better ratings, the ICC said in a report on its official website.

Labuschagne has four players just one rating point ahead of him on 938 rating points, with West Indies trio Gary Sobers, Clyde Walcott and Viv Richards and Sri Lanka great Kumar Sangakkara.

Labuschagne isn’t the only Australian player achieving a career-high rating following the series against the West Indies — left-hander Travis Head also climbed up seven places on the Test batter rankings to sixth overall and a personal best of 774 rating points.

Head earns the rise on the back of his century against the West Indies in Adelaide and the 28-year-old could jump even higher during the upcoming Test series against South Africa.

England’s series triumph over Pakistan also saw a host of their players improve up the rankings this week, with young gun Harry Brook moving up 15 places on the Test batter rankings to 55th overall after his century in the second innings and Player of the Match performance in Multan.

Their pacers were also rewarded, with evergreen veteran James Anderson jumping one place to second overall on the Test bowler rankings and fellow quicks Ollie Robinson and Mark Wood also making ground on No.1 ranked Australian Pat Cummins.

Steve Smith has moved up two places to second with 875 points while Pakistan skipper Babar Azam had slipped one place to third with 871 points. Former England captain Joe Root dropped down a place to fourth with 848 points.

Rishabh Pant is the highest-ranked Indian, static at fifth with 801 points while Rohit Sharma retained his 10th position in the rankings with 746 points. Kohli is currently ranked 12th with 714 points. On Wednesday, he lost a chance of improving his position when could manage only 1 runs against Bangladesh in the first Test in Chattogram.

UK provides lawyers to support ICC war crimes probe

The UK Ministry of Justice is also accelerating conversations with City law firms and barristers to prepare for deployment at the appropriate stage of the investigation…reports Asian Lite News

The Deputy Prime Minister, Dominic Raab, has unveiled a second package of support for the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) investigation into alleged war crimes in Ukraine.

A specialist legal and police team will be offered to support the investigation on top of the £1 million funding provided earlier this year.

This will include a dedicated Metropolitan Police Officer stationed in the Hague providing the ICC with swift access to further British police and military expertise. Seven UK lawyers well experienced in international criminal law have been offered to help uncover evidence and prosecute those responsible for war crimes.

The UK has been at the forefront of the global response supporting the ICC, and Prosecutor Khan and Government ministers will meet to discuss how UK expertise can continue to help uncover evidence of war crimes in Ukraine.

Deputy Prime Minister, Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice, Dominic Raab, said, “The UK has responded swiftly to a request from the International Criminal Court for more police and lawyers to aid their investigation into Russian war crimes in Ukraine. Russian forces should know that they will be held to account for their actions and the global community will work together to ensure justice is served.”

The Attorney General, Suella Braverman QC MP, said, “Following my appointment of war crimes expert Sir Howard Morrison as an Independent Adviser to the Ukrainian Prosecutor General’s Office, I am determined that British expertise continues to be available to our friends in Ukraine in their search for justice. We will stand side by side as they uncover the truth and hold those responsible in Putin’s regime to account for their actions.”

The UK Ministry of Justice is also accelerating conversations with City law firms and barristers to prepare for deployment at the appropriate stage of the investigation.

Earlier this month the Attorney General visited Ukraine and led a delegation of war crimes experts to the region to support the work of the Ukrainian Prosecutor General Iryna Venediktova.

ICC thanks NZC for hosting the ‘high-quality global cricket event’

During the tournament, only Australia’s Ashleigh Gardner and West Indies’ Afy Fletcher had tested positive for the virus…reports Asian Lite News

The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Thursday has thanked New Zealand Cricket (NZC) for the successful hosting of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2022.

The mega event, which turned out to be one of the most competitive and thrilling women’s Cricket World Cups ever, saw Australia crowned as champions after 31 matches.

With eight teams competing across six host cities, Christchurch, Wellington, Auckland, Hamilton, Dunedin and Tauranga, the event was brilliantly and safely delivered despite the scare of Covid-19 in the country with Australia lifting the trophy for a record seventh time, beating defending champions England by 71 runs.

“We are delighted with the way the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2022 has been staged. It has been the most wonderful advertisement for cricket with closely fought competitive matches on superb pitches at beautiful venues. I’d like to thank New Zealand Cricket and the Local Organising Committee for their commitment and dedication, often in challenging circumstances with COVID impacting on all areas of the event,” said ICC Chairman Greg Barclay in a statement.

The mega event was to happen in 2021. But due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it was pushed back by a year. During the tournament, only Australia’s Ashleigh Gardner and West Indies’ Afy Fletcher had tested positive for the virus.

“Thanks too, to the ICC staff for once again delivering such a high-quality global cricket event and to the Match Officials for doing such a great job. The New Zealand cricket loving public have done our sport proud, packing the Hagley Oval to make the final a great spectacle,” added Barclay.

Barclay signed off by expressing gratitude to players from all eight teams for making the Women’s Cricket World Cup an unforgettable event. “Of course, our biggest thanks must go to the players who have made this event so memorable. Finally congratulations to Australia for winning the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2022 in outstanding fashion.”

ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2022 winners to get USD 1.32 million

Every group stage win will also earn the teams a reward of USD 25,000 per victory from a total purse of USD 700,000…reports Asian Lite News

The winner of the 2022 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup, scheduled to be held across six venues in New Zealand from March 4 onwards, will be richer by USD 1.32 million — double the amount that was awarded to the victors of the 2017 edition in England.

The overall prize money has also seen an increase of 75 per cent, with the eight teams taking home a share of USD 3.5 million, which is USD 1.5 million more than the previous edition, according to the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Tuesday.

The runners-up will now be awarded USD 600,000, which will be USD 270,000 more than what India were rewarded in 2017 for finishing as runners-up to England in 2017 at Lord’s.

The two losing semifinalists will earn USD 300,000 each while the four teams who exit at the group stages will be awarded USD 70,000 — up from the USD 30,000 prize from the previous edition.

Every group stage win will also earn the teams a reward of USD 25,000 per victory from a total purse of USD 700,000.

This marks an increase in the prize money during the Women’s Cricket World Cup for consecutive editions. The prize money between the 2013 and the 2017 edition witnessed a 10-fold rise, going up from USD 200,000 to USD 2 million. England, who emerged champions on their home turf, took home USD 660,000 after beating India by nine runs to claim their fourth title.

In the 2022 edition, a total of 28 group stages matches will be played in a round-robin format, with each team playing each other once. The four sides with the most points will then advance to the semifinals. A victory will earn each other two points while a draw, a tie or a no-result will see them walk away with a single point.

The matches will be played across six venues with the tournament opener taking place between hosts New Zealand and West Indies at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui. The final will be played at Hagley Oval in Christchurch on April 3.
