‘Mrs’ Explores Woman’s Journey at IFFM 2024

Actress Sanya Malhotra is set to travel to Australia for the screening of her film ‘Mrs’, which explores the complex and nuanced journey of a woman trying to find her own voice, at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne 2024 (IFFM).

Speaking about the film’s Australian premiere, Sanya said: “I am thrilled and honoured that ‘Mrs’ will have its Australian premiere at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne. This film is incredibly special to me as it explores the complex and nuanced journey of a woman trying to find her own voice amid the expectations of society.”

The actress will be joined by the film’s director, Arati Kadav, for the premiere in Australia.

Sanya added: “Working with Arati Kadav and the entire team has been a profound experience. I believe the story will resonate with audiences everywhere, and I can’t wait to share it with the viewers at IFFM.”

The actress emphasised that the film festival has always been a significant platform for celebrating diverse narratives.

‘Mrs’ delves into the intricate life of a woman, portrayed by Sanya, who is a trained dancer and dance teacher. After her marriage, she faces the challenges of being a wife while striving to discover her own path and voice.

The film, which is the Hindi remake of the critically acclaimed Malayalam film ‘The Great Indian Kitchen’, traces her journey of self-expression amid societal expectations imposed on her marital life.

It also features Kanwaljit Singh and Nishant Dahiya.

Sanya was previously feted with the Best Actress award for the film at the New York Indian Film Festival and has also been nominated for Best Actress at IFFM 2024.

Talking about the film, director Arati Kadav added: “This film delves into the emotional and societal intricacies of a woman’s life, and having it as a centrepiece at IFFM is a testament to its universal appeal and relevance.”

“Sanya’s performance brings depth and authenticity to the character, making it a powerful narrative,” she added.

Producer Harman Baweja said he is thrilled that ‘Mrs’ will have its Australian premiere at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne.

“This film is very close to my heart, and having it featured as one of the centrepieces of the festival is truly fulfilling,” Baweja added.

The Indian Film Festival of Melbourne 2024 will be held from August 15 to August 25.

IFFM celebrates Karan Johar’s cinematic brilliance of 25 years

A tribute will be paid to filmmaker Karan Johar at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) as he completes 25 remarkable years in the industry. 

The festival, taking place from August 11 to 20, will showcase Karan Johar’s exceptional contribution to Indian cinema by hosting a series of events and special screenings in his honour. 

Karan said: “I am deeply honoured to be a part of the 14th Indian Film Festival of Melbourne. This year holds a special significance for me as I celebrate 25 years as a filmmaker, and I can’t think of a better platform than this festival to commemorate this milestone in my career.” 

“Returning for the third time at the festival, I am overwhelmed by the love and support I have received from the Australian audience. The festival’s curation of a special experience and celebrations to mark this momentous landmark in my journey fills me with a sense of joy and gratitude,” said the filmmaker, who made his debut in 1998 with ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’.  

“It is an opportunity for me to reflect upon the last 25 years as a filmmaker, the challenges, the triumphs, and the learnings that have shaped my artistic vision. I look forward to engaging in a special talk at the festival, where I will share insights and anecdotes from my journey, hoping to inspire and connect with fellow filmmakers and cinema enthusiasts,” he added. 

Speaking about the upcoming celebration, Festival Director Mitu Bhowmick Lange said: “Karan Johar is a true icon of Indian cinema, and his impact on the industry cannot be overstated. We are privileged to honour his extraordinary career and his invaluable contributions to Indian filmmaking at this year’s Indian Film Festival of Melbourne.”

‘Jai Bhim’, ‘Minnal Murali’, ‘Badhaai Do’ top films at 13th edition of IFFM

In the 13th edition of Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM), films such as ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’, ‘Badhaai Do’, ‘Jai Bhim’, ’83’ and ‘Minnal Murali’ and many others have been nominated in the Best Film category.

This year’s big nominees include the starring leads and filmmakers / producers of films like ‘Jai Bhim’, ‘The Rapist’, ‘Gangubai Kathiwadi’, ’83’, ‘Badhaai Do’, ‘Sardar Udham’, among others.

Indie films nominations have acclaimed films including ‘Pedro’, ‘Once Upon a Time in Calcutta’, ‘Fair Folk’ amongst others, while ‘Urf’, ‘Ayena’, ‘Ladies Only’ are some of the Best Docu nominees.

Winners of Best Film, Best Indie Film and Best Documentary each win state of the art cameras from Black Magic Design apart from the award.

Another key highlight is that the Best Film winner automatically gets a nomination nod under the Best Asian Film category at the annual prestigious AACTA (Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards).

This year too those awards will be included with Best Series, Best Actor in a Series and Best Actress in a Series. In these categories, ‘Mumbai Diaries’, ‘Aranyak’, ‘Mai’ and ‘Yeh Kaali Kaali Ankhein’ are leading the nominations.

Actors Gopal Hegde for ‘Pedro’, Rajkummar Rao for ‘Badhaai Do’, Ranveer Singh ’83’, Suriya, Tovino Thomas, Vicky Kaushal and Abhishek have been named in the Best Actor category.

While in the Best Actor (Female) section, names like Alia Bhatt, Deepika Padukone, Bhumi Pedenkar, Kokona Sen Sharma, Lijomol Jose, Shefali Shah, Sreelekha Mitra and Vidya Balan are nominated.



Pakistani film ‘Joyland’, ‘Lunana: A Yak in the Classroom’ from Bhutan, Bangladesh movies such ‘No Man’s Land’ and Rehana Maryam Noor; and Sri Lankan film ‘The Newspaper’ have made it to the Best Film From Subcontinent.

The festival, which is presented by the Victorian Government, is an annual festival that takes place in Melbourne, Australia, and showcases the best of films from India and the subcontinent. This year the festival starts August 12-20. The Awards night is all set to take place on August 14.
