Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said that both India and Indonesia have been partners in good and bad times and also have shared legacies and culture.

Addressing a gathering of the Indian diaspora in Bali, he said that in 2018, when Indonesia was affected by an earthquake, India immediately started operation Samudra Maitri.

“That year (2018) when I came to Jakarta, I had said that India and Indonesia may be 90 nautical miles apart, but in reality, we are not 90 nautical miles apart but 90 nautical miles close,” he said.

Invoking the Ram temple which is coming up in Ayodhya, Modi said: “At a time when the grand Ram Temple is taking shape in India, we also proudly remember the Ramayana tradition of Indonesia.”

The Prime Minister further said that India is a ray of hope for the world in the 21st century, adding that “today’s India doesn’t think small. Today India is doing work at unprecedented scale and speed”.

Modi further added that a few months back India celebrated its 75th Independence Day on August 15, while Indonesia’s Independence Day falls on August 17.

“But Indonesia was fortunate to attain independence two years before India. There is a lot that India can learn from Indonesia. But in its 75-year-old long development journey, there is a lot that India can give to Indonesia. India’s talent, technology, innovation, industry have made an identity for themselves before the world. Several big companies of the world have an Indian-origin CEO,” Modi added.

Sheikh Mohamed joins Indonesian president in inaugurating the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, named to laud the UAE’s founding father…reports Asian Lite News

UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan has arrived in Indonesia to attend the G20 summit. Sheikh Mohamed and the delegation were received by Indonesian President Joko Widodo, at the Solo airport.

The UAE President was invited to attend the summit by Indonesia, which holds the current G20 presidency.

The G20 is a platform comprising 19 countries and the European Union, which aims to address major issues related to the global economy. This year, the summit will take place in Bali, Indonesia on November 15-16, and will be chaired by the Indonesian president.

The UAE President was accompanied by Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Presidential Court; Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan; and Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad bin Tahnoun Al Nahyan, Special Affairs Advisor at the Presidential Court, official news agency WAM reported.

Sheikh Mohamed also joined the Indonesian president in inaugurating the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, named to laud the UAE’s founding father.

Taking to Twitter Sheikh Mohamed wrote that the Summit provides an important platform to discuss the opportunities and challenges facing the world today. He also said that the UAE is looking forward to engaging in constructive dialogue to support sustainable growth.

He wrote: “The G20 Summit in Bali, Indonesia provides an important platform to discuss the opportunities and challenges facing the world today. The UAE looks forward to engaging in constructive dialogue to support sustainable growth and shared progress for all countries and their people.”

Meanwhile, Arshad Rasheed, President of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, has expressed his pride in the UAE’s participation at the G20 Leaders’ Summit meetings, praising the cooperation and the strong relations between the UAE and Indonesia.

In a statement to the Emirates News Agency (WAM) on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Bali, Indonesia, Rasheed also expressed his hope to attract more Emirati investments to his country.

The total non-oil trade exchange between the UAE and Indonesia, from 2012 to 2021, amounted to $24 billion (AED86.9 billion).

The volume of intra-non-oil trade grew during the first nine months of this year, with an increase of 33% compared to the same period in 2021, and record growth of 104% compared to the same period in 2020.

The UAE is among the 20 largest trading partners of Indonesia and the second-largest trading partner in the Arab world.

In conjunction with the Business 20 (B20) Summit, which is part of the G20 Summit, the Ministry of Economy organised the UAE Business Forum on Saturday in cooperation with the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry to discuss prospects for cooperation. The two countries signed 16 cooperation agreements between companies from both sides.

Meanwhile, Indonesian Ambassador to the UAE Husin Bagis expressed the importance of the UAE’s participation at the Summit, especially being a leader in priority issues facing world. “We believe that the UAE will contribute to reaching concrete results at the G20 this year, to benefit the world economy. We all know the UAE is indeed one of the countries that lead in the three priority issues (Global Health Architecture, Digital Transformation, and Sustainable Energy Transition),” he said.

One notable partnership between the UAE and Indonesia was the signing of the Indonesia-UAE CEPA (Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement) on July 1, 2022. It is projected to enhance trade balance between the two countries to$10 billion in the next few years. “The IUAE CEPA is expected to be Indonesia’s entry point to the UAE, which is a hub for increasing exports to potential export destination countries such as the Middle East, Africa, Central Asia, and South Asia,” Bagis explained.

According to the agreement, Indonesia will get 0% (tariff-free) for the exporting products of gold, tyres, spare parts, automotive accessories, car batteries, solar batteries, palm oil, jewellery, paper, rubber, and spices.

“In addition to strong economic ties, Indonesia, the most populous Muslim country in the world, and the UAE are highlighting shared common values regarding moderate Islam and a readiness to work together to promote tolerance and fight against religious extremism,” Bagis added.

UAE launches business forum

The UAE Business Forum was last week in Bali, Indonesia, on the sidelines of the annual G20 meeting.

The forum, which brought together business leaders from both countries, was launched to explore emerging opportunities for cooperation between the business communities, and resulted in the signing of 16 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs).

The forum was one of the first major investment conferences to take place since the signing of the UAE-Indonesia Comprehensive Partnership Agreement in July, and which is likely to be ratified in the coming weeks.

Among the 16 MoUs was a deal between G42 and its subsidiaries Presight.ai and G42 Healthcare with Indonesian healthcare AI firm Asaren, while Burjeel Holding Group signed an MoU to develop a healthcare facility through a strategic partnership with the Indonesian Mitra Jaya Group.

Etihad Airways, GAL/AMMROC and Sanad signed in MoUs in aircraft maintenance, with MoUs on electric mobility and defence agreements signed by BarQ EV and Lahab respectively.

Seven additional MoUs were signed around cooperation on the organisation of the 2023 Annual Investment Meeting in Indonesia in 2023.

Modi to attend G20 summit in Indonesia

During the Bali Summit, G-20 leaders will deliberate extensively upon key issues of global concern under the Summit theme of “Recover Together, Recover Stronger”…reports Asian Lite News

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Bali, Indonesia next week to attend the 17th G-20 Summit. The Prime Minister is undertaking the visit at the invitation of Indonesia President Joko Widodo.

“Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi will be visiting Bali, Indonesia from November 14-16 to attend the 17th G20 Summit at the invitation of the President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo,” the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in a statement.

During the Bali Summit, G-20 leaders will deliberate extensively upon key issues of global concern under the Summit theme of “Recover Together, Recover Stronger”.

“Three working sessions will be held as part of the G-20 Summit Agenda — food and energy security; health; and digital transformation,” the statement added.

At the Summit’s closing session, President Widodo will symbolically hand over the G20 Presidency to Modi.

India will formally assume the G20 Presidency from December 1. On the sidelines of the Summit, Modi will hold bilateral meetings with some of his counterparts. He will also address and interact with the Indian community in Bali. Earlier this week, Prime Minister unveiled the logo, theme and website of India’s G20 Presidency via video conferencing. Guided by the Prime Minister’s vision, India’s foreign policy has been evolving to undertake leadership roles on the global stage.

The G20 Presidency offers a unique opportunity for India to contribute to the global agenda on pressing issues of international importance. The logo, theme and website of India’s G20 Presidency reflect India’s message and overarching priorities to the world.

G20 is the premier forum for international economic cooperation representing around 85% of the global GDP, over 75% of the global trade, and about two-thirds of the world population.

During the G20 Presidency, India will host about 200 meetings in 32 different sectors in multiple locations across India. The G20 Summit to be held next year, would be one of the highest-profile international gatherings to be hosted by India.

Putin not to attend summit

Russian President Vladimir Putin will not attend the Group of 20 summit in Indonesia next week, an Indonesian government official said on Thursday (November 10), avoiding a possible confrontation with the United States and its allies over his war in Ukraine.

Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, the chief of support for G-20 events, said Putin’s decision not to come was “the best for all of us.”

US President Joe Biden, Chinese President Xi Jinping and other world leaders are to attend the two-day summit that starts next Tuesday. The summit would have been the first time Biden and Putin were together at a gathering since Russia invaded Ukraine in February. Indonesian President Joko Widodo is hosting the event on the island of Bali.

“It has been officially informed that Russia’s President Vladimir Putin will not attend the G-20 summit, and will be represented by a high-level official, and this has been discussed by President Joko Widodo and Putin in previous telephone conversations,” Pandjaitan said after meeting security officials in Denpasar, the capital of Bali.

“Whatever happens with Russia’s decision, it is for our common good and the best for all of us,” added Pandjaitan, who is is also the coordinating minister of maritime affairs and investment. He said earlier that Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will lead the Russian delegation.

Pandjaitan did not know why Putin decided not to come but said “maybe it’s because President Putin is busy at home, and we also have to respect that.” Pandjaitan confirmed the same reason may be keeping Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at home as well.

Widodo earlier this year travelled to Kyiv and Moscow in an effort to get the two leaders to sit down in Bali and make peace.

Russian Foreign Ministry and Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed later Thursday that Lavrov will head Russia’s delegation at the G-20 summit instead of Putin. He did not give a reason.

Putin’s decision not to attend the summit comes as Russian forces in Ukraine have suffered significant setbacks. Russia’s military said it will withdraw from Kherson, which is the only Ukrainian regional capital it captured and a gateway to the Russian-occupied Crimean Peninsula.

Russia’s announced retreat from Kherson along with a potential stalemate in fighting over the winter could provide both countries an opportunity to negotiate peace, Army Gen. Mark Milley, chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, said Wednesday.

He said as many as 40,000 Ukrainian civilians and “well over” 100,000 Russian soldiers have been killed or wounded in the war, now in its ninth month. “Same thing probably on the Ukrainian side,” Milley added.

COP27: UAE, Indonesia unveil Mangrove Alliance for Climate

MAC seeks to raise awareness about the role of mangroves as a nature-based climate change solution, and, through its members…reports Asian Lite News

Mariam bint Mohammed Almheiri, Minister of Climate Change and the Environment, on Tuesday announced the launch of the Mangrove Alliance for Climate (MAC). Led by the UAE and Indonesia, the initiative seeks to scale up and accelerate the conservation and restoration of mangrove ecosystems for the benefit of communities worldwide.

The announcement took place at the 27th UN Climate Change Conference (COP27), running in Egypt from 6th to 18th November. Five other countries – India, Sri Lanka, Australia, Japan, and Spain – have joined the Alliance.

MAC seeks to raise awareness about the role of mangroves as a nature-based climate change solution, and, through its members, will work towards expanding and rehabilitating mangrove forests globally.

Mangrove forests are among the most productive and ecologically important ecosystems on earth. They offer significant climate change mitigation and adaptation co-benefits, as they store carbon up to 400 percent faster than land-based tropical rainforests, protect coasts from rising sea levels, erosion, and storm surges, and provide breeding grounds for marine biodiversity. Around 80 percent of the global fish population depend on healthy mangrove ecosystems.

Mariam Almheiri said, “Increasing reliance on nature-based solutions is an integral element of the UAE’s climate action on the domestic as well as international level, therefore we seek to expand our mangrove cover. At COP26, we presented our ambitious target of planting 100 million mangroves by 2030.”

“We are pleased to launch MAC jointly with Indonesia, and believe it will go a long way in driving collective climate action and rehabilitating blue carbon ecosystems,” she added.

The Minister noted that the UAE intends to plant three million mangroves within the next two months.

At the MAC launch ceremony, the website https://mangrovealliance4climate.org, which features the alliance’s goals, work mechanisms, and a pledge form for members, went live.

MAC will follow a voluntary approach. Members can determine their own commitments towards planting and restoring mangrove forests, promoting multilateral cooperation, and sharing knowledge, while the Alliance will support their projects in the areas of mangrove research, management and protection of coastal areas, and educating the public about climate change mitigation and adaptation.

Collectively, members will demonstrate their dedication to maximising the potential of nature-based solutions through mangrove planting and conservation campaigns, enhance mangroves’ climate change mitigation capabilities through research and innovation, contribute to mangrove conservation worldwide through scientific and socio-economic studies, engage the community and the private sector in mangrove planting to expand blue carbon ecosystems, and step up concerted efforts to advance the global climate agenda.

MAC will feature multiple interactive platforms, including annual meetings to track progress in implementing its goals, drive cooperation between members, and approve annual reports.

Drugs from S’pore, Australia to arrive in Indonesia

The needed rare drugs expected to arrive in Indonesia are Fomepizole drug vials, with 10 from Singapore and 16 from Australia…reports Asian Lite Lite News

Indonesia is expected to receive drugs for acute kidney injury from Singapore and Australia amid increasing children’s deaths from the disease, Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin announced.

As of Saturday, the number of children in Indonesia who died from atypical progressive acute kidney injury has risen to 133, forcing the authorities to temporarily ban all sales and prescription of syrup-based medications nationwide, reports Xinhua news agency.

The needed rare drugs expected to arrive in Indonesia are Fomepizole drug vials, with 10 from Singapore and 16 from Australia, the Minister told reporters here on Sunday.

The Health Ministry had ordered less than 200 vials previously.

Each patient is expected to receive one vial with 1.5 gram or 1.5 ml injection dose.

“We hope the drugs can be distributed immediately to hospitals soon after they arrive here,” Sadikin added.

The Minister also expressed appreciation for the assistance from both Singapore and Australia.

The Indonesian government has been working to identify possible causes of the acute kidney injury in the children, who are mostly less than six years old, and preliminary investigation has linked it with pathogens contaminating the syrup medicines taken by them, such as ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, and ethylene glycol butyl ether.

The Ministry earlier assured that the acute kidney injury cases were not related to Covid-19 vaccines as the jabs are only for people aged six and above in the Southeast Asian country.

Recently, about 70 children in Gambia died from acute kidney injury, which were allegedly related to the diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol content in four Indian-made cough syrups.

But Indonesia’s food and drug regulatory agency confirmed these drugs were not registered in the country.
