Rishi Sunak has denied any connection with a multinational firm part-owned by his wife that has continued to operate in Russia during the war in Ukraine, BBC reported.

The UK Chancellor said he had “nothing to do” with Infosys, in which his wife Akshata Murthy holds shares. He has also urged UK firms to pull out of Russia to inflict “economic pain” on President Vladimir Putin.

Sunak’s spokesperson said Murthy had no role in Infosys’s operational decisions.

Pressed on Infosys’ presence in Russia, Sunak told Sky News on Thursday: “I’m an elected politician, and I’m here to talk to you about what I’m responsible for. My wife is not.”

He added that companies’ operations were “up to them”.

“We’ve put in place significant sanctions and all the companies we’re responsible for are following those, as they rightly should,” said the Chancellor.

The software giant was co-founded by Murthy’s father Narayana Murthy, who retired from the company in 2014, BBC reported.

Founded in 1981, the firm has since expanded into a number of countries and operates an office in Moscow.

The most recent annual report lists Akshata Murthy as holding 0.9 per cent of the company’s shares — reportedly worth hundreds of millions of pounds.

Earlier this month, Sunak had said the government would “fully support” UK firms that pull out of Russia voluntarily.

After meeting a group of leading British companies, the Chancellor said he welcomed the “consensus on the need to inflict maximum economic pain on Putin and his regime”.

“While I recognise that it may be challenging to wind down existing investments, I believe there is no argument for new investment in the Russian economy,” he added.

Rishi Sunak on Thursday faced questions about the Russian presence of Infosys, the Indian software services company in which his wife Akshata Murty has a share.

With reference to stringent sanctions being imposed on Russia, the Indian-origin finance minister who is the son-in-law of Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy was asked on air if his advice to businesses was not being followed within his own home. The minister stressed that the operations of individual companies was a matter for them.

“It’s been reported that you’ve got family links to Russia, that your wife apparently has a stake in the Indian consultancy firm Infosys,” a ‘Sky News’ reporter said during the television interview.

“They operate in Moscow, they have an office there, they have a delivery office there. They’ve got a connection to the Alpha Bank in Moscow. Are you giving advice to others that you’re not following in your own home?,” she questioned.

Sunak replied that as “an elected politician”, he was giving the interview about what he’s responsible for.

“My wife is not,” he said.

On being pushed on whether his family was “potentially benefiting” from Russian President Vladimir Putin’s regime, he said: “I don’t think that’s the case, and as I said the operations of all companies are up to them.

“We’ve put in place significant sanctions and all the companies we are responsible for are following those as they rightly should, sending a very strong message to Putin’s aggression.” He was then asked if Infosys, which also has a UK presence, was sending a similarly “strong message”.

“I have absolutely no idea because I have nothing to do with that company,” replied Sunak.

An Infosys statement said the multinational software services major “supports and advocates for peace” between Russia and Ukraine.

The statement said: “Infosys has a small team of employees based out of Russia, that services some of our global clients, locally. We do not have any active business relationships with local Russian enterprises.

“A key priority for Infosys in times of adversity, is to continue extending support to the community. The company has committed USD 1 million towards relief efforts for the victims of war from Ukraine.” The UK has imposed wide-ranging sanctions on Russian businesses and individuals, with Sunak issuing a call for all UK companies to “think very carefully” about any investments in Russia over the ongoing Ukrainian conflict.

K’taka to ink 3 MoUs with Infosys to achieve NEP objectives

Narayan said under the MoUs, the NEP community will be established to facilitate the exchange of best practices among the institutions…reports Asian Lite News.

In order to give priority to skill development among the students as per the National Education Policy (NEP-2020), the Department of Higher Education in Karnataka will soon ink three MoUs with IT major Infosys.

A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting convened by Infosys officials and chaired by C.N. Ashwath Narayan, the state Minister for Higher Education, at the Vikasa Soudha on Tuesday.

Narayan said, “These MoUs will be related to utilising the ‘Infosys Springboard’, which comprises over 3,000 courses of skill development for college students, ‘Campus Connect’ for digital learning of college faculty and professional guidance for students and donation of 15,000 debonded computers to colleges from Infosys.”

Infosys Springboard is an integrated digital literacy platform comprising effective digital learning solutions, technology-based life skill courses, gamification, live classes, industry certification, makers lab, career guidance etc.

Introduction of gesture computing and biometrics for smart classrooms, utilising virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) for training, linking learning data with performance outcome, utilising gamification and design principles to create healthy competition among students, utilising automation and robotic tools to create content will be part of the MoUs, he said.

Narayan said under the MoUs, the NEP community will be established to facilitate the exchange of best practices among the institutions.

He added that institutions will be mentored and guided towards the implementation of the NEP framework and collaboration will be established between the Karnataka Digital Economy Mission (KDEM) and Infosys to achieve talent acceleration.
