Public will make BJP yearn for even 140 seats, says Akhilesh

Samajwadi Party chief and candidate from Kannauj Lok Sabha seat, Akhilesh Yadav on Monday asserted that the ongoing Lok Sabha elections is to protect the Constitution adding that the BJP will yearn for even 140 seats in this polls.

“This government has discriminated against farmers, youth and businessmen for ten years. This election is to protect the Constitution. The public will make them (BJP) yearn for even 140 seats,” Akhilesh told reporters.

Earlier today, there was a huge uproar in the meeting of the SP President in Sant Kabir Nagar, Uttar Pradesh. During this, the crowd went out of control. The crowd broke the barricades installed around the stage.

On Sunday, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Samajwadi Party president were forced to cut short the public meeting in Prayagraj’s Phulpur constituency as the crowd broke the barricades and reached the dais, creating a stampede-like situation.

Both the leaders left the rally without addressing the people of the Phulpur constituency in Prayagraj. The campaign rally was organised in support of Amarnath Maurya, who is contesting on an SP ticket for the Phulpur Lok Sabha seat.

The workers of both the Congress and the Samajwadi Party went out of control and attempted to reach the stage to get near Rahul Gandhi and Akhilesh Yadav. The police were struggling to control the excited crowd that went past the barricades that were put in place.

Notably, polling for the Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh is being held across all seven phases. Voting in the first five phases has already been completed, while the remaining phases are scheduled for May 25, and June 1.

The counting of votes for all phases has been scheduled for June 4. In the 2019 polls, the BJP mopped up the bulk of the electoral spoils in the state, winning 62 of the 80 Lok Sabha seats, while ally Apna Dal (S) won two more seats. Mayawati’s BSP managed to secure 10 seats, while her then-alliance partner, Akhilesh Yadav’s SP, had to settle for just 5 seats. The Congress won just a lone seat in the state.

In the 2014 elections, the BJP swept UP, winning 71 seats, while the Congress could only bag 2. (ANI)

High-pitched campaigning ends for 5th phase

While temperatures soared across the country, there was no let up in the campaign heat as the Lok Sabha election season entered the last fortnight…reports Asian Lite News

Campaigning concluded on Saturday for the fifth phase of Lok Sabha polls covering 49 constituencies in six states and two UTs including the high-profile Rae Bareli and Amethi seats from where former Congress president Rahul Gandhi and Union Minister Smriti Irani are in the fray respectively.

In Jammu and Kashmir’s Baramulla, former chief minister Omar Abdullah, who is among 22 candidates in the fray, held a roadshow in Soibugh – a central Kashmir village that was once a hotbed of militancy- on the last day of campaigning.

While temperatures soared across the country, there was no let up in the campaign heat as the Lok Sabha election season entered the last fortnight. The Election Commission on Tuesday said it expects star campaigners, particularly of the national parties, to lead by example in the remaining three phases of the Lok Sabha polls and not vitiate the delicate fabric of society.

With over 40 of these seats with the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), Prime Minister Narendra and other BJP leaders tried to fend off the challenge posed by the INDIA bloc parties by raising the pitch on issues of appeasement, dynastic politics, Ram temple, Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), corruption and welfare initiatives taken by his government.

“If the SP and the Congress come to power, they will send Ram Lalla back to the tent and bulldoze the temple,” Modi claimed. He also alleged that the opposition wanted to bring back Article 370.

The Congress and other INDIA bloc parties accused the BJP of polarising voters with its “Hindu-Muslim politics”, and not focusing on issues like unemployment and inflation. They also persisted with their offensive on the issues of reservations and protecting the Constitution.

On Monday, polling will be held in 13 seats in Maharashtra, 14 in Uttar Pradesh, seven in West Bengal, five in Bihar, three in Jharkhand, five in Odisha and one each in J-K and Ladakh. This round covers the least number of seats (49) in the seven-phase election.

The parties also wrapped up canvassing in 35 assembly constituencies in Odisha, where BJD president and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik is among the candidates.

Among other prominent candidates in the fifth phase of Lok Sabha polls are several Union ministers including Rajnath Singh (Lucknow, UP), Piyush Goyal (Mumbai North, Maharashtra), Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti (from Fatehpur, UP) and Shantanu Thakur (Bangaon, WB); LJP (Ram Vilas) leader Chirag Paswan (Hajipur, Bihar), Shiv Sena’s Shrikant Shinde (Kalyan, Maharashtra ), and BJP’s Rajiv Pratap Rudy and RJD president Lalu Prasad’s daughter Rohini Acharya (both Saran, Bihar).

Gandhi, who has contested from Wayanad in Kerala, is also in the fight for Rae Bareli, a Nehru-Gandhi family pocket borough that was represented by his mother Sonia Gandhi since 2004. The BJP has fielded UP minister Dinesh Pratap Singh.

On Friday, Congress leader Sonia Gandhi tried to strike an emotional chord as she said at a rally that she is giving her son to the people of Rae Bareli and “Rahul will not disappoint you”.

“My everything is all given by you. So, brothers and sisters, I am giving you my son” said Sonia Gandhi, as Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra stood by her side on the stage at the rally.

Speaking before his mother, Rahul Gandhi said the “youth across the country have made up their mind that they don’t want Narendra Modi”.

“Narendra Modi will not remain prime minister after June 4 and the INDIA coalition government will be forme,” he said.

In Amethi, Union minister Smriti Irani, who had defeated Rahul Gandhi in 2019, is seeking a second term, while KL Sharma, an aide of the Gandhi family, has been fielded by the Congress.

From Lucknow, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is eyeing a fourth term. He is up against sitting SP MLA (from Lucknow Central) Ravidas Mehrotra.

During a rally in Lucknow, Singh said, “These elections are also to see who has raised the country’s stature in the world.”

In the Faizabad Lok Sabha seat, which covers the temple town of Ayodhya, the electoral contest is mainly between sitting BJP MP Lallu Singh, who is seeking a hat-trick, and Awadhesh Prasad, the SP MLA from Milkipur (SC) assembly constituency in Ayodhya.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on May 15 announced that if the INDIA bloc is voted to power, it will double the quantity of free rations provided by the BJP government to the poor.

Farmers’ loans will be waived and Minimum Support Price will be guaranteed, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav said on Tuesday.

In Baramulla, besides Abdullah, former separatist Sajad Lone, former MLA Sheikh Abdul Rashid alias ‘Engineer Rashid’, who is currently lodged in the Tihar jail, and the PDP’s former Rajya Sabha member Fayaz Ahmad Mir are also contesting.

With the separatist-sponsored boycott politics a thing of past now, the people are expected to participate in the elections in large numbers to chose their favourite.

Political parties fielded their stalwarts as they gave the last push in Maharashtra where elections will conclude with polling in 13 constituencies in North Maharashtra and Mumbai Metropolitan Region on May 20.

Prime Minister Modi on Wednesday addressed campaign rallies in Kalyan and Dindori in support of the BJP-Shiv Sena-NCP Mahayuti’ coalition’s candidates and also held a roadshow in northeast Mumbai.

Modi was again back in Mumbai on Friday for a rally in the city’s Shivaji Park. Opposition bloc INDIA also held a rally the same day at the city’s Bandra Kurla Complex that was attended by Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge, Uddhav Thackeray, Sharad Pawar and Delhi Chief Minister and AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal.

On the concluding day, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath held public meetings at Malegaon in Nashik district and Palghar to canvass for Mahayuti candidates.

Security has been stepped up in West Bengal’s seven constituencies, with over 57 per cent of the polling stations identified as sensitive in the fifth phase, the highest till now in this election.

Over 60,000 personnel of central forces, besides around 30,000 personnel of the state police, have been deployed, which is more than in the four previous phases in the state, an official said.

Star campaigners, including Prime Minister Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee and her nephew and party general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, have held rallies for their respective party candidates.

In Barrackpore, BJP candidate Arjun Singh is contesting against TMC’s Partha Bhowmick and CPI (M)’s Debdut Ghosh. In Serampore, TMC’s sitting MP Kalyan Banerjee is fighting against BJP’s Kabir Shankar Bose.

In Hooghly, actor-turned-politician Locket Chatterjee of the BJP is contesting against a fellow member of the film fraternity, Rachana Banerjee of the TMC.

Voting will take place in Saran, Muzaffarpur, Hajipur, Sitamarhi and Madhubani Lok Sabha seats of Bihar.

In Saran, former Union minister Rajiv Pratap Rudy’s bid to score a hat-trick has been challenged by RJD president Lalu Prasad’s daughter Rohini Acharya, who had donated her kidney to her father. RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, who has suffered a back injury, campaigned for his elder sister in Saran.

The curtains also came down on Saturday over campaigning for three Lok Sabha seats and Gandey assembly by-poll in Jharkhand.

With the conclusion of Phase 4, polling for general elections had crossed the halfway mark as it was completed in 23 states/UTs and 379 Lok Sabha constituencies out of 543. The sixth and seventh phases are on May 25 and June 1 respectively. The counting of votes is on June 4.

Thane acid test for Shinde

Shinde is personally supervising the poll management for the victory of the party nominee Naresh Mhaske who faces a tough challenge from his former colleague and Shiv Sena (UBT) candidate Rajan Vichare, reports Sanjay Jog

Chief Minister and Shiv Sena chief Eknath Shinde faces an acid test to maintain his supremacy in the Thane constituency which is his home turf, especially after the vertical split in the party in June 2022.

Shinde is personally supervising the poll management for the victory of the party nominee Naresh Mhaske who faces a tough challenge from his former colleague and Shiv Sena (UBT) candidate Rajan Vichare.

Incidentally, it is a fight between two former Thane mayors who have one thing in common — both give credit to their rise in politics to Shiv Sena founder Balasaheb Thackeray and the party’s former Thane district chief Anand Dighe. The fight is being portrayed between a loyalist and a rebel.

Thane has been Shiv Sena’s citadel but the political equations have been changed drastically after Eknath Shinde walked out of the party by staging a rebellion against party chief Uddhav Thackeray and joined hands with BJP.

There are 24 candidates in the fray. The number of total voters rose to 25,07,372 during the 2024 elections against 23,70,903 in 2019 and 20,73,251 in 2014. Thane constituency is witnessing rapid urbanisation with the flourishing real estate development, Metro rail, redevelopment of slums and cluster development of old and dilapidated buildings.

Eknath Shinde

During the present elections, Shinde is reiterating his claim of being a real Shiv Sena while Thackeray, who is resolved to regain the party’s lost glory in Thane, is accusing the Shinde faction of treachery to gain power. After the formal split, a majority of the former corporators and office-bearers migrated to the Shinde faction while very few but committed Shiv Sainiks remained loyal to Thackeray.

Shinde is banking on the army of the former corporators and Shakha level cadres apart from BJP’s poll machinery, association of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, RPI and other organisations for Mhaske’s victory.

The ongoing election is also crucial as Shinde outsmarted the BJP by sticking to his claim over the Thane constituency. Earlier, the names of former MP Vinay Sahasrabudhe, sitting legislator Sanjay Kelkar and former MP Sanjeev Naik were doing the rounds as BJP nominees.

After several rounds of talks amid Shinde’s adamant stand, the BJP finally gave up its claim over the Thane seat. Shinde crossed a major hurdle after former minister and BJP leader Ganesh Naik was pacified by the BJP leadership which asked him to actively work for Mhaske. Naik and his supporters had expressed strong displeasure over Mhaske’s nomination as some of them had tendered their resignations declaring not to work for Mhaske.

Naik’s son and former MP Sanjeev Naik was keen to contest on the BJP ticket as he had already started work in the last six months. However, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis intervened to calm Naik and his supporters which gave a major relief to Shinde.

By the time, both allies arrived at an understanding and announced Mhaske’s nomination, Vichare, who remained with Thackeray despite a lot of pressure, had reached out to the voters urging them their support to score a hat-trick.

Undeterred by the resources and manpower put up by Shinde and MahaYuti in general, Thackeray is cashing on the support from hardcore Shiv Sainiks, cadres of Congress, NCP, SP, and other like-minded parties for Vichare’s victory.

Thackeray and Vichare are optimistic that the people, who are not happy about the manner in which Shinde took away the party and its symbol, will express their anger through votes in their favour. Moreover, support from Muslims, other minorities and Dalits to Vichare, is another source of strength for him.

Vichare and Mhaske are leaving no stone unturned during their outreach to voters. They are focusing on rallies, corner meetings, visits to various organisations and religious places apart from house-to-house contact. Both have resorted to aggressive campaigning through social media too.

Vichare and Mhaske are promising a speedy transformation of Thane by addressing a slew of issues. The increasing number of railway passengers has put tremendous pressure on the existing Thane railway station so the proposed new railway station between Thane and Mulund is being promised by them for early commissioning.

The rising traffic jams especially due to the construction of the Metro rail corridor, delayed water transport project and mismatch between rising demand for drinking water and its supply, are other key issues prevalent in the constituency.

Barrackpore braces for tight race

BJP’s Barrackpore constituency candidate Arjun Singh, who is candid about his switching parties, is aiming to repeat victory in the Lok Sabha polls…reports Asian Lite News

The electoral battleground of Barrackpore Lok Sabha constituency in West Bengal promises to be a closely contested affair, where the Trinamool Congress (TMC) faces the challenge of overcoming the ‘bahubali factor’ of the BJP nominee to seize the seat from the saffron camp, according to PTI report.

At the heart of this contest lies the dynamics between Arjun Singh, a prominent figure who has switched allegiances between the TMC and BJP, and Partha Bhowmick, the TMC’s debutant nominee in parliamentary politics.

Arjun Singh’s political journey, characterized by his back-and-forth between the TMC and BJP, reflects the volatile nature of West Bengal politics. Singh’s return to the BJP fold, citing feeling “betrayed” by Mamata Banerjee, underscores the personal and ideological complexities within the state’s political landscape. His influence, particularly among Hindi-speaking voters concentrated in Barrackpore’s jute belt, presents a unique challenge to the TMC.

However, the TMC’s nomination of Partha Bhowmick, coupled with his strong grassroots presence in Naihati, aims to counter Singh’s influence. Bhowmick’s task is not only to secure a lead in Singh’s home turf but also to mobilize support in areas with significant minority voter concentration, such as Amdanga. The outcome of the election hinges on Bhowmick’s ability to sway voters away from Singh, especially considering Singh’s appeal among certain demographics regardless of party affiliation.

The narrative of Singh’s ‘turncoat’ politics, while potentially detrimental to his credibility among some voters, is overshadowed by the broader appeal of Narendra Modi and the BJP’s agenda. Singh’s assertion that voters will prioritize Modi’s leadership over his party-hopping tendencies highlights the primacy of national issues in local elections. Moreover, the absence of significant opposition from within the BJP ranks suggests tacit acceptance of Singh’s return, mitigating potential backlash from party loyalists.

In assessing the electoral landscape, the role of other contenders, such as the CPI(M) nominee Debdut Ghosh, emerges as a crucial factor. Ghosh’s appeal to middle-class Bengali voters disillusioned with the politics of muscle and money power adds a layer of complexity to the contest. While the CPI(M)’s historical stronghold in Barrackpore provides a solid foundation, the absence of internal discord within the party enhances its prospects of garnering support across various demographics.

The Congress-backed Left candidate’s optimism about the CPI(M)’s resurgence resonates with the prevailing sentiment against the perceived collusion between the BJP and TMC. Barrackpore, with its diverse electorate of nearly 15 lakh voters, presents an opportunity for the Left to capitalize on the disillusionment with mainstream parties and offer an alternative vision.

As the election date approaches, the campaign rhetoric is likely to intensify, with each candidate vying to sway undecided voters and consolidate their support base. The outcome of the election will not only shape the political landscape of Barrackpore but also serve as a barometer of the broader trends in West Bengal politics. Whether the TMC can withstand the BJP’s challenge or if the Left can stage a comeback remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: the electoral battle in Barrackpore will be closely watched and fiercely contested until the last vote is cast.

Candid about switching sides

Arjun Singh is quite candid about the reasons that prompted him to go back to the BJP.

“When I re-joined Trinamool Congress in 2022, I was promised re-nomination from Barrackpore. Then before the nomination, the ruling party leadership wanted me to field me from elsewhere. I denied it since Barrackpore is in my roots. Still I was hopeful. But ultimately when the party chose not to re-nominate me, I had no other option but to go back to BJP,” Arjun Singh said.

Partha Bhowmik is using this statement of Arjun Singh against him in his campaigns.

“So frequent shift to political camps results in loss of credibility for any politician and the people of Barrackpore will make Arjun Singh realise that this time,” he said.

Arjun Singh’s counter-argument is that such observations are not acceptable from a party like Trinamool Congress whose leadership is habitual in taking back turncoats.

“There are so many examples of Trinamool Congress leaders joining the BJP before the 2021 West Bengal assembly elections and subsequently going back to the ruling party fold after the polls. Some of them going back to the ruling party even got elected as BJP legislators in the 2021 polls,” Arjun Singh argued.

Although Arjun Singh got elected in 2019 from Barrackpore, his winning margin was not that high which can be reverted considering the strong organisational base of Trinamool Congress at Barrackpore.

In 2019, Arjun Singh defeated Trinamool Congress’ Dinesh Trivedi by a margin of 14,857 votes, which political observers feel is not that big a margin that cannot be recovered especially in a highly volatile constituency like that of Barrackpore.

Social media monitoring in full swing ahead of elections

Officials shared that “any future attempts to spread misleading information or disrupt societal harmony will be met with stringent legal consequences….reports Asian Lite News

In light of the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections, authorities have intensified social media monitoring to safeguard public peace and ensure citizens’ safety.

The Cyber Crime Social Media Monitoring Cell in Gujarat, operating under the guidance of the Crime Branch and Cyber Crime Branch, remains vigilant on platforms like Facebook, officials shared on Tuesday.

The Ahmedabad Police’s Cyber Crime Branch on Tuesday arrested two individuals who had circulated a manipulated video of Home Minister Amit Shah on Facebook.

Dr. Lavina Sinha, Deputy Commissioner of Police for Cyber Crime, announced that the suspects, identified as Satish Vansola of Palanpur and Rahul Bhai Bariya of Limakheda, Dahod, were detained for their involvement in spreading the doctored footage.

Both are linked to political parties and allegedly shared the video without confirming its authenticity.

On April 27 an incident involving disseminating a doctored video aimed at sowing discord was promptly addressed.

The video, falsely titled ‘BEF INDIA TU SAUDI ARAB EXPORT,’ depicted cow containers and was posted to incite communal unrest and tarnish reputations.

The Cyber Crime cell has registered a case against the individual responsible for this inflammatory content, highlighting the government’s commitment to maintaining harmony and legality during the election period.

Officials shared that “any future attempts to spread misleading information or disrupt societal harmony will be met with stringent legal consequences. This measure is a part of a broader strategy to prevent the misuse of digital platforms and protect the integrity of the electoral process.

Home Minister’s doctored video

The investigators are yet to receive any response from social media giants X (formerly Twitter) and Meta in connection with a doctored video of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, a source in the Delhi Police’s Special Cell told IANS on Tuesday.

Three persons have been arrested by the police for circulating the fake video so far, two in Gujarat and one in Assam.

“We are trying to trace the origin of the doctored video. A reply from the social media giants is of utmost importance in the case. X, meanwhile, has deleted all the morphed videos from its platform,” said a senior Delhi Police officer privy to the probe.

After registering an FIR, the Special Cell’s IFSO unit, which has been tasked to crack the case, sent a letter to the X seeking details.

Summonses have been issued under Sections 91 and 160 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), calling individuals to participate in the probe and provide relevant documents and electronic devices as evidence.

Some sections invoked by the police in the FIR classify the offence as non-bailable.

Over 16 persons, including political leaders, from seven states have been summoned by the Delhi Police in connection with the case.

The Special Cell has also sent teams to Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Nagaland, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Madhya Pradesh as a part of the probe.

On Monday, Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy along with four Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) members — Shiva Kumar Ambala, Asma Tasleem, Satish Manne, and Naveen Pettem — were summoned to appear before the Delhi Police on May 1.

The move followed after the Delhi Police on Sunday registered an FIR after two complaints were received by the police, one from the BJP and another from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).

The controversy erupted after a doctored video surfaced on social media showing Home Minister Amit Shah making statements suggesting the BJP’s intention to annul the reservation provisions for Scheduled Castes (SCs), Scheduled Tribes (STs), and Other Backward Classes (OBCs).

CPI(M) Politburo holds meeting to strategise on LS polls

Mamata Banerjee also stayed out of Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra when it passed through the state, which allowed the BJP to point out that the opposition bloc is in tatters in West Bengal…reports Asian Lite News

Day after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress announed candidates for all 42 Lok Sabha seats in the state, dealing a blow to the possiblity of alliance with the Congress, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) held a meeting at its party office in Delhi today.

The Politburo meeting is expected to strategize on the Lok Sabha elections and discuss its party candidates for all Lok Sabha seats across the country.

“Every party is free to decide how they want to proceed with the elections. Now that the Trinamool Congress has made it clear that they are going to fight alone, we INDIA parties need to take a call and decide how to respond. We are prepared. In Bengal, the CPIM is prepared that we will go with all secular forces there who are prepared to come together to defeat the BJP and the Trinamool Congress,” CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury said, speaking to reporters on Mamata Banerjee’s decision to contest solo in West Bengal.

Speaking on the possibility of striking an alliance with the Congress for West Bengal as they had done in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, Yechury said that the Congress “appears to be waiting” for the Trinamool Congress for “some opening.”

“That (seat-sharing talks with Congress) will now be worked out. It depends on the Congress what they are doing. Congress appears to be waiting for some opening with the TMC. But I think the TMC has closed all the doors,” the CPI(M) leader said.

On seat-sharing between the alliance partners, Yechury said, “We will start discussions today and it will continue till the election dates are announced.”

Notably, the CPI-M has announced its Lok Sabha candidates for Wayanad, Thiruvananthapuram, Mavelikkara, and Thrissur in Kerala. The CPI-M and the Congress are expected to see a tough fight in Wayanad, where the CPI-M has pitted Annie Raja against Rahul Gandhi.

The INDIA bloc suffered a major blow when Mamata Banerjee, considered to be a strong player in the INDIA bloc, announced that her party would be fighting the Lok Sabha polls alone in West Bengal.

Mamata Banerjee also stayed out of Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra when it passed through the state, which allowed the BJP to point out that the opposition bloc is in tatters in West Bengal.

The CPI(M) has also moved a contempt petition against the State Bank of India (SBI) for not disclosing donor details in the electoral bonds case.

“The SBI disregarded the directions of the court. Till the last day, they kept quiet and then they moved an application seeking more time which is not necessary. Everybody who is involved in the implementation of the electoral bond, including the former Finance Secretary has said that within a couple of hours, the SBI can provide all the information. We think it is a direct case of contempt of court and so the court must seriously consider it,” Yechury said.

On the Election Commissioner Arun Goel resigning from the post ahead of the Lok Sabha polls, Yechury said, “This is very perplexing and disturbing. On the eve of the General Elections, for the Election Commission to resign, without giving any reason, and the fact that it was accepted so promptly also shows that something is going on, which is not healthy for a free and fair election.” (ANI)
