Manchester City Clinch Fourth Consecutive Premier League Title

Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City made history on Sunday by becoming the first English club to win four Premier League titles in a row with a 3-1 win over West Ham United at the Etihad Stadium here. Guardiola has masterminded an unprecedented era of dominance for the second club from Manchester, who have now lifted 17 major honours since the Spanish coach arrived in Manchester.

With Sunday’s win over the Hammers, City finished with 91 points from 38 matches with 28 wins and seven draws, ending two points ahead of Arsenal, who defeated Everton 2-1 at home. Liverpool won 2-0 against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield to secure third place in the table.

At the start of the day, the focus was on City as everyone wanted to know whether this side had the can repeat the monumental achievement of winning the Big Five trophies in 2023.

Sealed on the final day of a gruelling campaign, Manchester City have now won 10 English league titles in total and six of those titles have come under their Catalan manager.

The 3-1 final-day victory over West Ham United was made possible by two goals by Phil Foden, who was named Premier League Player of the Season and Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year, and one by Rodrigo.

Foden took just 79 seconds to fire City into the lead before doubling their advantage when he turned in Jeremy Doku’s pinpoint cross in the 18th minute.

West Ham’s Mohammed Kudus pulled a goal back with a stunning overhead kick just before half-time. But Rodrigo put the result beyond doubt with an elegant finish as Guardiola’s side remained unbeaten at Etihad STadium throughout this season.

This latest Premier League title success is the third trophy City have won during the 2023/24 season, building on the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup victories earlier in the campaign.

City now have an opportunity to become the first side in English football history to win back-to-back Premier League and FA Cup doubles when they face cross-town rivals Manchester United in the FA Cup final at Wembley on May 25.

Sunday’s historic achievement now sits alongside the 100 Premier League points that Manchester City achieved in 2017/18, their Fourmidables campaign of 2018/19, and their incredible Champions League, Premier League, and FA Cup Treble of 2022-23 among the pantheon of hugely significant City milestones in recent seasons.

Manchester City leads the Premier League with five consecutive wins

Manchester United’s 2023-24 season went from bad to worse as they slumped to their third defeat of the season in the Premier League as a doughty Brighton & Holves Albion beat them 3-1 in Manchester on Saturday.

Manchester United started with a formidable attack and saw some close shots at the start of the game, but failed to score at the Old Trafford. They then conceded the opening goal in the 20th minute of the game ex-United striker Danny Welbeck rattled the defense and went through the back of the net to score the first goal of the game.

However, it was not too late for United as Ramsuj Hojlund, playing his first game for the club, could have equalised but the referee disallowed the goal.

Rober De Zebri’s mighty Wolves dominated the second half completely with a solid position forward and launched two strikes early in the second half. Pascal Gross and Joao Pedro scored spectacular goals that gave Brighton a 3-0 lead, adding dismay to the United crowd.

With only 18 minutes left, Hannibal Mejbri, a United replacement, managed to score a consolation goal, but it was already too late. 

With assurance, Brighton successfully finished the game and earned a victory. Brighton now have 12 points from five games and is in third place in the Premier League standings.

United, however, continued to struggle, languishing in the 12th position with just six points following a dismal start to the season. 

Brighton also put an end to Manchester United’s home winning streak that had dated back to the first game of the previous campaign against Brighton.

Earlier in the day, defending champion Manchester City took on West Ham United and showed their resilient fight, beating the Hammers 3-1 and overtaking Liverpool to propel to the top spot after their fifth consecutive win.

Liverpool started the Premier League with a weekend’s impressive comeback to defeat Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-1 in an away match.

Manchester City is in the top spot with five wins in 5 games. Tottenham is in the second spot and Liverpool placed third with four wins.

‘Manchester City’s titles cement path to global leadership’

His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of the Presidential Court and Owner of Manchester City FC, today received at Qasr Al Watan Pep Guardiola, Manager of Manchester City FC, and Khaldoun Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of the Executive Affairs Authority and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Manchester City FC.

During the meeting, Guardiola and the club’s board of directors presented His Highness Sheikh Mansour with the titles won this season, including the UEFA Champions League, the English Premier League and the FA Cup.

The acquired titles will pave the way for further achievements, His Highness Sheikh Mansour said, noting that the club’s strategy has enabled it to achieve its goals and enhance its global leadership.

He also praised the club’s board, management and players for their dedication and hard work to maintain the club’s level of performance and set new records, acknowledging the support of the club’s fans, who stood by and cheered for the team in various competitions.

The club’s history, future plans and strategies in sports and investment areas, as well as the club’s social events, and the upcoming 2023/2024 season were among the topics covered during the meeting.

Al Mubarak credited the club’s global success to His Highness Sheikh Mansour, stressing that the club’s board, management and players have received unlimited support and encouragement from Sheikh Mansour, which fostered a winning culture and led to many achievements.

Guardiola also thanked His Highness Sheikh Mansour for his support and patronage of the club, affirming that the club’s achievements are a result of Sheikh Mansour’s generosity, as he has given the team everything required to succeed and delight the club’s fans in the UK and around the world.

He also stressed the commitment of the club’s management and players to maintain their excellent performance, aim for leading positions, and win trophies and titles.

The meeting was also attended by Abdullah Abdul Reda Khoury, Member of the Board of Manchester City FC, Ferran Soriano, Chief Executive Officer of Manchester City FC, and Aitor “Txiki” Begiristain Mujika, Director of Football at Manchester City FC.

Man City climb atop the table with win over Southampton

Defending champions Manchester City brushed aside Southampton 4-0 to move to the top of the Premier League table — at least for 24 hours as Arsenal will play Liverpool on Sunday.

Manchester United hit four goals without reply with a classy, dominant performance at the Etihad Stadium after the visitors held out for the first 20 minutes before Joao Cancelo gave City the lead.

Phil Foden’s fine form continued with a delightful chip on 32 minutes and Riyad Mahrez wrapped up three points four minutes into the second half with a clever volley.

Erling Haaland, who had hit the woodwork and gone close several times, finally capitalised on clever play between Kevin De Bruyne and Cancelo and drilled home a pinpoint cross by the latter in the 65th minute to complete a 4-0 win.

The win helped City move up to 23 points from nine matches, moving ahead of Arsenal (21 points), who play Liverpool on Sunday.

In London, goals from Kai Havertz, Christian Pulisic and Armando Broja helped Chelsea register a maiden win in five matches against Wolverhampton Wanderers. With the 3-0 win the Blues secured a third successive Premier League home victory for the first time in over a year.

Chelsea also moved up to fourth place in the Premier League table, although they were made to wait longer than they would have liked to go ahead.

Several good chances came and went before Havertz cleverly headed us in front in first-half stoppage time. It was the least the hosts deserved for an inventive and dominant showing before the break.

Just as in the midweek success over AC Milan, a second goal soon after the restart effectively ended the game as a contest. Mason Mount picked up his second assist and this time it was Pulisic who benefitted, calmly lifting the ball into the Shed End net.

In other matches, Bournemouth beat Leicester 2-1 while Newcastle outclassed Brentford 5-1 at home.
