India, GCC to start trade pact talks

According to experts, the GCC region holds huge trade potential, and a trade agreement would help in further boosting India’s exports to that market…reports Asian Lite News

India and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member countries are expected to start negotiations for a free trade agreement next month with an aim to boost economic ties between the two regions, an official said.

The GCC is a union of six countries in the Gulf region — Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman and Bahrain.

“Terms of reference for the agreement are being finalised and we expect to launch the negotiations next month,” the official said.

India has already implemented a free trade pact with the UAE in May this year.

According to experts, the GCC region holds huge trade potential, and a trade agreement would help in further boosting India’s exports to that market.

Rakesh Mohan Joshi, director, Indian Institute of Plantation Management, Bangalore, said the GCC market is unexploited by domestic exporters, and it holds huge potential.

“GCC is a major import dependent region. We can increase our exports of food items, clothing and several other goods. Duty concessions under a trade agreement will help in tapping that market. It will be a win-win situation for both sides,” Joshi said.

Mumbai-based exporter and founder chairman of Technocraft Industries India Sharad Kumar Saraf said the GCC has emerged as a major trading partner for India and there is huge potential for increasing investments between the two regions.

“FTA will have a major benefit for both the sides,” Saraf said.

Sharing similar views, Federation of Indian Exports Organisation (FIEO) vice-chairman Khalid Khan said sectors such as chemicals, textiles, gems and jewellery and leather will get a major impetus by this agreement.

India imports predominately crude oil and natural gas from the Gulf nations like Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

Spike in trade

Bilateral Trade between India and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) grew from US$ 87.35 billion in FY 2020-21 to US$ 154.66 billion in FY 2021-22, registering an increase of 77.06% on a year-on-year basis. Since FY 2017-18, on a compounded annual growth rate basis, bilateral trade between India and the GCC has grown by 10.57%.

Giving details in the Lok Sabha of India’s exports to the GCC during the last five financial years, the Minister of State in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry Anupriya Patel had stated a few weeks ago that since FY 2017-18, on a compounded annual growth rate basis, bilateral trade between India and the GCC has grown by 10.57%.

India seeks greater investment from Saudi Arabia

Saudi Investments in India, as of March 2021, amounted to US$3.13 billion. Major Saudi investment groups include ARAMCO, SABIC, ZAMIL, E-holidays, and Al Batterjee Group. Additionally, Soft Bank’s ‘Vision Fund’ has invested in Indian startups such as Delhivery, FirstCry, Grofers, Ola, OYO, Paytm and PolicyBazaar.

Other proposed major investments include the US$44 billion ‘West Coast Refinery and Petrochemicals Project’ in Maharashtra, which is being jointly built by Saudi Aramco, Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, and an Indian consortium, which includes Indian Oil Corporation, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation, and Bharat Petroleum Corporation.

In the renewable energy sector, Saudi Company Al-Fanar has a controlling stake in 600MW Wind Power projects in India.

Riyadh has also thanked India for standing by Saudi Arabia during the pandemic including facilitating the travel of Indian healthcare professionals to Saudi Arabia.

While a large number of Indian workers particularly in the Gulf returned to India due to Covid-19, the economic recovery in that region and their increasing openness to travel from India have now seen a return by many of them.

Why GCC is significant for India

Historically, GCC and India have enjoyed cordial relations, with India as the immediate neighbor to the Gulf counties and a key player in ensuring peace and stability to the nation.

Indian diaspora in the Middle East accounts for around 7.6 million people, with UAE at 3,41,000 followed by Saudi Arabia with 25,94,957. Kuwait hosts 10,29,861 Indians, Oman 7,79,351, Qatar 7,56,062. As per the RBI report remittances that this diaspora sends are said to be around 30% of the total remittances received by India from abroad, however, earlier this figure used to be 50%. The primary reason for such a massive diaspora in these countries can be the shortage of local workforce and the development and job opportunities these countries constitute. The decline in the remittances can be because of the COVID-19 pandemic which forced the labor to come to India.

UAE Tops MENA in Food Security Index

UAE ranked first of all MENA countries in the overall food security index and in the food availability indicator, reports Asian Lite Newsdesk

The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) revealed that the UAE ranked first in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region on the Global Food Security Index (GFSI) 2022, issued by Economist Impact, compared to the third place in the region for the year 2021.

According to the index, the UAE ranked first of all MENA countries in the overall food security index and in the food availability indicator, second in food quality and safety, and fifth in food sustainability and adaptation as well as affordability.

Mariam bint Mohammed Almheiri, Minister of Climate Change and the Environment, said, “Strengthening food security is a strategic priority for the UAE. To achieve this objective, we have adopted an integrated approach that includes the implementation of national strategies and the creation of an enabling legislative and regulatory framework.”

The comprehensive National Food Security Strategy 2051 aims to develop sustainable food systems by using modern technologies, supporting local production, building international partnerships to diversify food sources, and enacting laws and policies that improve nutrition and reduce food waste with the aim of ensuring food security under any circumstances.

The strategy seeks to boost the UAE’s ranking in global food security indicators and transform the country into a hub for innovation-based food security.

Almheiri added that the efforts to strengthen food security include projects, programmes, and initiatives that enhance local production capabilities, stimulate investment and entrepreneurship in the food sector, and promote the adoption of sustainable agricultural methods.

She also stressed that the UAE is working to achieve its goal to top the GFSI by 2051.

The Minister noted that ensuring the availability of food and the continuity and flexibility of supply chains is one of the main pillars of the strategy.

She explained that this involves boosting cooperation with other countries worldwide, diversifying food import sources, increasing foreign agricultural investment, and monitoring import markets to verify compliance with the highest international food safety standards.

Globally, the UAE ranked 23rd in the overall food security index, seventh in food availability, and 16th in food safety and quality. The country scored 75.2 points on the general scale of the 100-point index, compared to 71 points recorded in 2021, registering growth by 4.2 points.

In August 2021, MOCCAE signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Emirates Development Bank (EDB) to cooperate in identifying innovative financing solutions to support entrepreneurship in the agrifood industry based on the use of modern technologies and sustainable systems.

Food trade is one of the most important and dynamic sectors in the country that has witnessed a rapid recovery after the COVID-19 pandemic. The daily food import rate now exceeds 41,000 tons, a growth of 21 percent compared to the same period of the previous year.

The annual GFSI records and measures year-on-year changes in the structural factors that affect food security. The index takes into account several metrics, including food cost, availability, quality, and safety, as well as natural resources and resilience across 113 nations. It is based on 58 indicators that measure the drivers of food security in developing and developed countries.

The third edition of the Future Food Forum 2022, organised and hosted by the UAE Food & Beverage Manufacturers Business Group, in partnership with Dubai Chamber and Food Tech Valley, covered topics including sustainability, food security, retail supply chain management, digital technologies and the future of farming among other topics.

Abdulla Al Saleh, Under-Secretary, Ministry of Economy, stressed the need for the UAE to improve local food production and technology adoption in the sector.

He said that the UAE is the world’s second-largest re-export market for agriculture and processed food in the world after the US and plays a vital role in maintaining food and agricultural supply in the region.

He added, “To achieve food security goal, the UAE has adopted the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) model. Under the programme, the UAE has so far concluded three CEPAs with India, Indonesia and Israel and is in talks with several other strategic partners.”

CE-Creates merges with hatch & boost in MENA’s first venture-builder merger

CE-Creates, the business incubation platform of Crescent Enterprises, has completed the merger of its portfolio of startups with hatch & boost…reports Asian Lite News

Hatch & boost and CE-Creates aim to jointly advance the growth of impact-driven startups in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region while introducing unique models of building and scaling them.

The partnership, operating under the new name hatch & boost Ventures, will see the acceleration and growth of seven portfolio startups this year, which span across agritech, sustainable mobility, femtech, foodtech, fintech, among other sectors.

“A powerful way to address the socio-economic and environmental challenges across our region is to nurture entrepreneurs who are creating the solutions to these challenges through innovation. This is something Crescent Enterprises has always believed in, and has been pursuing for over two decades through our various platforms. Last year, the UAE ranked first in the region for venture capital investments with a record AED 4.3 billion of investments in startups, and this trend is on an upward trajectory,” said Badr Jafar, CEO of Crescent Enterprises.

”We are also witnessing a pivot towards businesses that align their financial goals with their environmental and social impact, and our combined venture builder intends to be at the forefront of these positive trends.”

In just under two years, hatch and boost created and scaled its own startups through a sector-agnostic model that focuses on solving the world’s most pressing environmental and social challenges. With its unique focus on ESG, hatch & boost’s approach serves to fill gaps in early-stage startup development as well as de-risk early-stage investment into impact-driven startups by utilizing a shared pool of resources; ultimately lowering the startup capital cost and optimizing this capital through economies of scale.

“Today, our biggest opportunity lies where impact and profit are viewed as equally imperative to the success of any startup. The merger of our portfolio of startups with CE-Creates is an incredible opportunity for us to drive ESG practices forward in the region, by enhancing our ability to launch and scale sustainable ventures across a number of sectors. This is a major milestone for us, as well as a testament to the validation of the successful model we have built,” said Faris Mesmar, CEO and Managing Partner of hatch & boost.

“We share similar investment objectives with CE-Creates and, together, we have what it takes to systemize and structure the startup building process in the region. COP26 Regional Ambassador for the Middle East and Africa Janet Rogan today announced £5 million UK funding to expand the Met Office’s successful Weather and Climate Information Services activity to the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.

The Weather and Climate Information Services (WISER) programme was launched in Africa in 2016 and has been delivering transformational change in the uptake of weather and climate information services across the region since then. It has enabled enhanced information for over 3.3 million households and delivered in excess of £200 million of socio-economic benefit.

Following the success of WISER in Africa, the UK’s funding will be used to expand the concept to the MENA region.

The programme aims to deliver transformation in the generation and use of co-produced weather and climate services to support decision making at local, national, and regional levels, building resilience to the impacts of climate change.

Announcing the funding at MENA Climate Week, COP26 Regional Ambassador for the Middle East and Africa Janet Rogan said, “I am extremely proud to announce the UK’s £5 million WISER programme for MENA in partnership with the UK’s Met Office. This programme will see the Met Office expanding the scope of its successful Weather and Climate Information Services (WISER) activity to this region, delivering impactful weather and climate services to those who need it the most.”
