PM Modi greets Dalai Lama on birthday

The Dalai Lama, who resides in Dharamsala, Himachal Pradesh, sent out a video message on the occasion of his birthday…reports Asian Lite News

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday spoke to Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama on the occasion of his 88th birthday.

“Spoke to His Holiness @DalaiLama and conveyed heartfelt greetings to him on his 88th birthday. Wishing him a long and healthy life,” the Prime Minister tweeted.

The Dalai Lama, who resides in Dharamsala, Himachal Pradesh, sent out a video message on the occasion of his birthday.

“Although I am just one human being in the short term, I aspire to contribute to the world peace in thought, word and deed. While in the long term I pray that everyone may reach Buddhahood, the trumpet state of Omnisense, by ascending the paths and grounds (of Bothisattvas), I rejoice that all our different religious traditions make prayers for the benefit of all,” he said.

The Dalai Lama was born on July 6, 1935, to a farming family in a small hamlet in Taktser in Amdo province in northeastern Tibet.

Earlier named Lhamo Dhondup, he was recognised as the reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama, Thubten Gyatso, in 1937 when he was two-years-old.

In 1959, the occupying Chinese troops suppressed the Tibetan national uprising in Lhasa and forced the Dalai Lama and over 80,000 Tibetans into exile in India and neighbouring countries.

Modi’s France visit expected to lead to submarine, jet deals

The visit is likely to see the launch of some common initiatives responding to the key challenges like climate change, and the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals…reports Asian Lite News

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be the Guest of Honour for the national day celebrations of France this year. Bastille Day, observed on July 14 every year, is France’s National Day. The day is marked by a special military parade at the Champs Elysees in Paris.

On May 5, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) made an announcement stating that French President Emmanuel Macron extended an invitation to Prime Minister Modi. This visit holds the promise of enhancing the India-France Strategic Partnership by establishing ambitious objectives in areas such as strategic collaboration, cultural exchange, scientific advancements, academic pursuits, and economic cooperation.

India and France share a common vision of peace and security, especially in Europe and the Indo-Pacific, upholding the objectives and principles of the United Nations Charter.

The forthcoming visit is likely to see the launch of some common initiatives responding to the key challenges of the time, such as biodiversity loss, climate change, and the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It provides an opportunity for India and France to reaffirm their commitment to multilateralism, including in the context of India’s G20 Presidency.

India and France are celebrating the 25th anniversary of their Strategic Partnership this year. An Indian armed forces contingent will participate in the Bastille Day Parade alongside their French counterparts to mark this important milestone.

India has so far signed more than 35 strategic partnerships. But, the strategic partnership India signed with France in January 1998 was India’s first ever. A few months later, India conducted the Pokhran II nuclear tests. India carried out its nuclear tests within a few months. Not only did France refrain from imposing sanctions, but President Chirac himself sought to provide India with a respectable entry into the global nuclear framework.

The Prime Ministerial visit may be useful for India in the context of the Ukraine war, where Indian and European perceptions differ. The strengthening of the strategic partnership with France may reassure other EU nations that despite occasional tactical differences, a friendly relationship with India continues to be a useful investment. France’s lead within the European Union is likely to be more decisive than ever before. Since Brexit, France remains the only country in the European Union which is both a nuclear state and a Permanent Member of the Security Council of the United Nations.

France hosts the fourth-largest Indian diaspora in Europe, following the United Kingdom, Italy, and Germany. Despite the prevailing difficulties, France has earnestly endeavoured to attract Indian students and professionals. The two nations have established a bilateral agreement focused on migration and mobility cooperation, with the objective of facilitating circular migration that enables individuals to enhance their skills abroad and subsequently return to contribute to their home country.

Nonetheless, it’s critical to focus on enhancing the scale of mutual trade and investment. The two-way commerce has been hovering around USD 10-12 billion during the last few years. India’s trade with countries like Bangladesh, Thailand, and Vietnam exceeds in size when compared to its trade with France. It is incumbent upon India to explore ways and means to amplify its trade volume with France, a formidable European economy valued at USD 3 trillion.

The forthcoming visit is poised to be a significant milestone for the Indian Navy, with substantial agreements on the horizon. There is a palpable sense of anticipation among national and international defence and security sectors, speculating the possible fruition of long-standing government-to-government (G2G) defence contracts. This potential breakthrough represents a promising leap forward in bilateral relations and a testament to persistent negotiations.

The negotiations included the procurement of 26 Dassault Rafale-Maritime (M) fighters and at least three add-on Scorpene-class diesel-electric ‘killer-hunter’ conventional submarines or SSKs. They are to supplement six similar boats which were licence-built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) in Mumbai from 2006 onwards.

The visit may also see India agreeing to France’s involvement in the Navy’s programme to build six nuclear-powered attack submarines or SSNs, via a technology transfer. That project is underway at the secretive Ship Building Centre in Visakhapatnam.

Secondly, another anticipated highlight of PM Modi’s visit is the prospective agreement on the anvil for MDL to undertake the license-build of three more Scorpene-class submarines. The Indian Navy’s Project 75-India (P-75I) programme, a home-grown initiative to construct six SSKs in partnership with a foreign original equipment manufacturer, has been plagued by several delays over the past 16 years. However, this potential agreement signifies a reinvigoration of the program and promises to push forward India’s defence ambitions.

France has shown a keen interest in partnering with key Indian entities such as the Defence Research and Development Organisation, the Department of Atomic Energy, the Navy, and related organisations.

Their collaboration would focus on locally constructing six SSNs, designed to augment and operationally assist the Navy’s fleet of four indigenously designed and built Arihant-class nuclear-powered missile submarines (SSBNs), each weighing 7,000 tonnes. The latter submarines were constructed leveraging Russian know-how and technical support, underscoring the international collaboration that underpins India’s naval advancements.

In early 2023, France offered to jointly develop SSNs with India by transferring technology based on its Barracuda-class SSNs. The first of those, INS Suffren, was commissioned into the French Navy in mid-2022. They are designed by the Naval Group, which is also responsible for developing the Scorpene boats.

‘Modi’s Egypt visit a potential game changer’

The PM’s trip to Egypt is expected to pave the way for a substantial increase in India’s investment in the North African country…reports Asian Lite News

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s two-day visit to Egypt has been hailed by analysts as a potential “game changer” for bilateral ties, according to Al Jazeera.

The PM’s trip to Egypt is expected to pave the way for a substantial increase in India’s investment in the North African country and a ladder for Egypt to gain entry to the BRICS economic bloc.
It is PM Modi’s first visit to Egypt as prime minister and the first by any Indian prime minister since 1997.

The visit comes months after Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi’s January visit to New Delhi when he was the chief guest at India’s 74th Republic Day celebrations. El-Sisi was the first Egyptian president accorded the honour.

Prime Minister Modi’s visit has been viewed as strengthening the bilateral relations the two sides had already elevated to a strategic level during el-Sisi’s January visit. Analysts say it could also reveal the contours of how ties could unfurl in the days ahead, according to Al Jazeera.

Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Official Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi has said: “This is a very quick, reciprocal visit coming just within six months of President Sisi’s visit to India. We do expect and are confident that the visit will not just ensure continuing momentum to the relationship between our two countries, but will also help expand it to new areas of trade and economic engagement.”

The visit from Egypt’s point of view is more about diversifying partnerships beyond the Western bloc. For India, observers have said it is to consolidate its position as a voice of the Global South as it gears up to host the G20 meeting in September in the capital New Delhi.

PM Modi, apart from bilateral talks and the signing of various trade agreements, will interact with the small Indian community and was expected to meet some prominent leaders in Egypt.

India and Egypt have enjoyed close ties as they were the founding numbers of the 1961 Non-Alignment Movement (NAM), a global forum of 120 developing countries that believed in the non-alignment of major power blocs.

Egypt’s President El-Sisi has travelled to India three times. While Egypt has eyed increasing India’s investment in the country, experts said New Delhi is looking for deeper access to the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region through Cairo.

Aftab Kamal Pasha, who taught Middle Eastern Studies at the Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi, told Al Jazeera that Egypt and India have enjoyed friendly relations historically.

“There are clear limits to what he [PM Modi] can get from the GCC [Gulf Cooperation Council] states, so he turned to Egypt,” Pasha said.

Pasha said El-Sisi would like to see Egypt join BRICS, a powerful grouping of the world’s major economies including Brazil, Russia, India, and China.

PM Modi “wants to balance China in the organisation” and also to prevent Pakistan, which Beijing wants inside BRICS, from joining, he said. Expectations have been high that PM Modi will announce India’s support for Egypt’s desire to join BRICS.

According to analysts, close ties with Cairo can also hold significance for India. The most populous country in MENA, Egypt holds a crucial geostrategic significance as 12 per cent of global trade passes through the Suez Canal.

Cairo can be a gateway to major markets in both Europe and Africa for India, experts said. India has also been concerned about China’s growing influence in Egypt.

Currently, China’s bilateral trade with Egypt stands at USD 15 billion, double that of India’s USD 7.26 billion in 2021-22. The latest bilateral trade reached USD 5.18 billion from April 22 to January 23.

Senior research fellow at the Indian Council of World Affairs (ICWA), New Delhi, Fazzur Rahman Siddiqui, told Al Jazeera that India intends to emerge as a significant power in the Global South.

“Since Modi came to power, India has tried to broaden its foreign policy outreach. India has opened almost 20 new missions on the African continent,” Siddiqui said.

“Egypt has lost its voice in regional affairs like in Palestine, Ethiopia, and many African countries over the years. The kind of say it used to have; they have lost their shine. And Egypt is now looking beyond the continent, and India happens to be potential for its growing stature.”

He said by allying with Egypt, India could have a deeper access to the Arab world, Africa, and much deeper access to Israel. After taking over the G20 presidency in December 2022, India has invited Egypt to participate as a “guest country”. (ANI)

Modi due in Egypt

PM Modi’s visit to the mosque is scheduled as the first event on the last day of his two-day programme in Egypt’s sprawling capital Cairo….reports Asian Lite News

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is all set to visit the 11th-century Al-Hakim Mosque here during his two-day visit to Egypt beginning on Saturday. PM Modi’s visit to the mosque is scheduled as the first event on the last day of his two-day programme in Egypt’s sprawling capital Cairo.

The Prime Minister will spend nearly half an hour at the Al-Hakim Mosque– a historic and prominent mosque in Cairo named after Al-Hakim bi-Amr Allah (985-1021), the 16th Fatimid caliph.

The mosque was originally built by Al-Hakim bi-Amr Allah’s father, Caliph Al-‘Aziz Billah, towards the end of the 10th century, in the year 990, and was later completed by Al-Hakim in the year 1013.

The mosque is also known as Al-Anwar, meaning “the Illuminated”, similar in style to the name of the earlier Al-Azhar Mosque founded by the Fatimids. It is the second-largest mosque in the city of Cairo, and the fourth oldest.

The mosque is located in the heart of Islamic Cairo, on the east side of al-Mu’izz Street, just south of Bab al-Futuh (one of the northern city gates of Fatimid Cairo).

The Al-Hakim Mosque is a significant example of Fatimid architecture and history in Cairo. The rectangular mosque covers an area of 13,560-metre square out of which 5000 square metres is the large courtyard or sahn at the centre. The remaining area is divided into the four covered halls on each side of the mosque, with the Bayt al salat, or sanctuary area and prayer hall towards the qibla wall, being the largest at 4,000 square metres and consisting of five bays.
The mosque has two distinctive minarets on its north and west corners, which were modified by Al-Hakim himself in 1010 by adding a square salient around them. They are the oldest surviving minarets in the city. The mosque also has the distinction of being the oldest mosque in the world to have two minarets erected together at the time of its initial construction.
The mosque has eleven gates, of which the most important is the central one on the main facade, made of stone. The gate has a prominent portico with carved niches and squares on its tip, similar to the Mahdiyah Mosque in Tunisia.

The mosque also has pointed arches supported by rectangular columns in the courtyard and the prayer hall, reminiscent of the Ibn Tulun Mosque in Cairo.
The mosque of al-Hakim bi-Amr Allah is an important cultural site for the Dawoodi Bohra community in Cairo. The latest renovation project was the second such initiative undertaken by the Dawoodi Bohra community after the first renovation and restoration project that was completed nearly forty years ago.
The renovations were undertaken as part of a large-scale plan by the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities to boost tourism to Cairo’s Islamic sites. The work was co-funded by the Dawoodi Bohra community.
Work on the mosque began in 2017 and included repairs to water damage and cracks in the walls. Wooden fixtures, including the mosque’s doors, its pulpit and the signature decorative wooden tiles that line the base of its ceilings, were bolstered.
The ornate chandeliers of the mosque, one of Cairo’s most prominent Fatimid sites, were also restored. Security cameras were installed as well as more efficient electrical wiring to service both the indoor areas and the large courtyard that the mosque is known for.
Intricate restorations were also undertaken on the mosque’s facades and marble floors.
The al-Hakim bi-Amr Allah Mosque, a nearly 1000-year-old structure in the heart of the Egyptian capital of Cairo, was reopened on the 27th of February this year following extensive renovations that took six years to complete.
PM Modi will make a State visit to Egypt on June 24 and 25.
Earlier, Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra said, “It is worth mentioning here that this will be Prime Minister’s first visit to Egypt and I might also mention that this would be the first official bilateral visit of the Indian Prime Minister to Egypt since 1997.”
PM Modi during his first Egypt tour will also visit Heliopolis War Grave cemetery to pay tribute to the Indian soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice fighting for Egypt during the First World War. (ANI)

Micron to set up $2.75 bn semiconductor facility in India

Micron’s new facility will enable assembly and test manufacturing for both DRAM and NAND products and address demand from domestic and international markets, the company said in a statement…reports Asian Lite News

Micron Technology on Thursday announced to set up a new $2.75 billion semiconductor assembly and test facility in Gujarat, a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Sanjay Mehrotra, the Indian-American President and CEO of Micron, in Washington DC during his state visit to the US.

Micron’s investment will be up to $825 million over the two phases of the project and will create up to 5,000 new direct Micron jobs and 15,000 community jobs over the next several years.

Under the government’s ‘Modified Assembly, Testing, Marking and Packaging (ATMP) Scheme,’ Micron will receive 50 per cent fiscal support for the total project cost from the Centre and incentives representing 20 per cent of the total project cost from Gujarat.

The combined investment over the course of two phases will be up to $2.75 billion.

Micron’s new facility will enable assembly and test manufacturing for both DRAM and NAND products and address demand from domestic and international markets, the company said in a statement.

The Prime Minister had invited Micron Technology to boost semiconductor manufacturing in India and noted that the country can provide competitive advantages in various parts of the semiconductor supply chain.

“We are excited about the steps India is taking to develop the local semiconductor ecosystem,” said Mehrotra.

“I am grateful to the Indian government and all of the officials involved that made this investment possible. Our new assembly and test location in India will enable Micron to expand our global manufacturing base and better serve our customers in India and around the world,” he added.

The phased construction of the new assembly and test facility in Gujarat is expected to begin in 2023.

Phase 1, which will include 500,000 square feet of planned cleanroom space, will start to become operational in late 2024, and Micron will ramp capacity gradually over time in line with global demand trends.

Micron expects Phase 2 of the project, which would include construction of a facility similar in scale to Phase 1, to start towards the second half of the decade.

“Micron’s investment to set up assembly and test manufacturing in India will fundamentally transform India’s semiconductor landscape and generate tens of thousands of high-tech and construction jobs,” said IT and Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.

“This investment will be a crucial building block in the country’s blossoming semiconductor ecosystem,” the minister added.

Democracy in our DNA, says Modi

PM Modi said that the government works according to the constitution formulated on the basis of basic democratic values…reports Asian Lite News

Noting that India and the US have democracy in their DNA, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said there is no question of discrimination on the grounds of caste, creed or religion and his government works by the mantra of ‘sabka saath, sabka vikas, sabka vishwas, sabka prayaas’.

Responding to a question during a joint press conference with US President Joe Biden, PM Modi said democracy is India’s spirit, in the veins of its people and they live democracy in their daily lives. “We are a democracy and as President Biden said India and America both have democracy in our DNA. Democracy is in our spirit and we live it and it’s written in our Constitution…So no question of discrimination on the grounds of caste, creed or religion arises,” PM Modi said when asked about measures the government is willing to take to improve the rights of minorities in the country.

PM Modi said that the government works according to the constitution formulated on the basis of basic democratic values.

“Democracy is our spirit, it is in our veins, we live democracy and our ancestors gave it the shape of the Constitution. Our government works according to the Constitution. We have proved that democracy can deliver,” PM Modi said.

“When I say democracy can deliver, there is no scope of discrimination on the basis of caste, creed, religion, gender. When we talk of democracy, if there are no human values, no humanity, no human rights, then it is not democracy. And when you talk of democracy, accept democracy and when we live democracy, there is no scope of discrimination. We go by the principles of ‘sabka saath, sabka vikas, sabka vishwas, sabka prayaas’ . There is access for all to benefits provided by the government. There is no discrimination in India’s democratic values on the basis of religion, caste, age, geography,” he added.

Answering a question related to the environmental protection, he said as far as India is concerned, the environment and climate “have an essential place in our culture and tradition”.

The Prime Minister said India is the only G20 country in the world that kept the promise it took in Paris to protect the environment

“Environment is an article of faith for us. We do not believe in the exploitation of nature. India not only works to protect its own environment but also works for protecting the world. We are taking global initiatives for the same. India is the only G20 country in the world that kept the promise it took in Paris to protect the environment,” he said.

“We have launched an international solar alliance for the world and today several countries in the world are working with us. We are seeing that due to natural calamities, there is a huge loss to the infrastructure. We care about our future generations, so we are taking a global responsibility to support the world in the crisis of climate change,” he added. (ANI)
