Museum of the Future, DEWA partner to showcase new tech

Spread across 900 square metres, the exhibition showcases existing solutions and concepts that demonstrate the application of advanced technology in renewable energy and sustainability…reports Asian Lite News

The Museum of the Future has signed a strategic partnership agreement with Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) to showcase unique technologies and solutions related to the future of environmental sustainability and renewable energy.

The agreement aims to pave the way for constructive research that helps solve today’s ecological challenges. This agreement is working towards enhancing Dubai’s position as a leading city of the future that sets a benchmark for low-carbon urban societies and sustainable development.

The partnership was announced at the “Tomorrow, Today” exhibition, which highlights concepts and solutions, such as energy and environmental innovations that, on a broader scale, can help solve global challenges. Spread across 900 square metres, the exhibition showcases existing solutions and concepts that demonstrate the application of advanced technology in renewable energy and sustainability.

This partnership comes as a result of the interest of the Museum of the Future in providing solutions designed to meet future needs through applying technologies of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. They have the potential to contribute to building sustainable low-carbon urban societies and promote sustainable development in the green economy.

The “Tomorrow, Today” exhibition, located on the museum’s second floor, also focuses on other critical areas, including space, health, cities, and technology in the near future. Each exhibit offers visitors a unique experience that inspires and encourages them to reimagine the world of tomorrow.

“At DEWA, we enhance national and global partnerships to forecast and shape the future to serve humankind. This supports the preparations for the next 50 years. The Seventh of the Principles of the 50 highlights the strategic goal to make the UAE a future global leader, and the Dubai 10X initiative, launched by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, to place Dubai 10 years ahead of leading global cities,” said Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA.

“As part of our ongoing efforts to achieve the wise leadership’s vision, DEWA was one of the first entities to support the Museum of the Future. DEWA has built a solar power plant that supplies the museum with clean energy. This has contributed to the museum being the first in the Middle East to apply for the Platinum Rating in the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), the highest ranking for green buildings worldwide. We are glad today to strengthen our partnership with the Museum of the Future. This will make the museum a new global platform highlighting DEWA’s leading global achievements in sustainability, clean and renewable energy, investing in the latest Fourth Industrial Revolution and disruptive technologies to provide futuristic innovative solutions and advanced services in accordance with the highest standards of quality, efficiency and sustainability. This enhances the quality of life and develops Dubai’s competitive abilities further,” Al Tayer stated.

“Through this partnership, we will work to select the best innovations and technologies to display in the museum, and we will work to support the government initiatives to contribute to making Dubai the smart city of the future, in addition to discovering more future technologies,” he added.

Khalfan Belhoul, CEO of the Dubai Future Foundation, said, “Strategic partnerships play a pivotal role in achieving the museum’s vision and enhancing Dubai’s leading position as a global laboratory for promising future technologies and concepts.”

He added, “DEWA’s captivating experience at the museum will introduce visitors to future innovations and concepts related to the production of clean energy and the transition to a green economy. This partnership will support the museum’s important contribution to the UAE’s future. It will encourage people to have their own perspective about the future and empower them to act upon it.”

“The ‘Tomorrow, Today’ exhibition represents a scientific environment that motivates global talents to innovate and develop solutions as a response to future challenges. More broadly, the museum provides a testbed for developing innovations in areas such as robotics and technology alongside evaluating their impact on society. Ultimately, the museum provides visitors with a unique interactive experience that enables them to gain insights into the future and allows them to explore its various sectors.”

The Museum of the Future is an architectural masterpiece in the heart of Dubai. It is considered a global icon for shaping a better future for humanity. A future based on innovation, creativity, cooperation, communication, and an openness to new ideas. The museum’s façade is 77 metres high and comprises 1,024 individual steel panels. It is also engraved with inspirational quotes from His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, written in Arabic calligraphy.

No limits to our ambitions: Sheikh Mohammed

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum toured the Museum of the Future, the new global scientific landmark provided by Dubai to the world, reports Asian Lite News

The Museum of the Future, with its ethereal design and unique concept, reflects Dubai’s and the UAE’s philosophy that there are no limits to our ambitions, and nothing will stop our accelerated march towards the future, said His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai.

While touring the Museum of the Future on the occasion of its grand opening, Sheikh Mohammed said, “The UAE is betting on the future. It focuses on harnessing efforts, minds, resources, and capabilities to foresee, design and build it. The Museum of the Future is a major leap in Dubai’s and the UAE’s journey towards building a knowledge-based future economy, employing advanced technology in all development sectors, and contributing to creating an inclusive scientific and intellectual movement.”

“The Museum of the Future is another landmark among the many scientific and knowledge initiatives and projects that Dubai embraces within the UAE’s vision to Reignite Arab Civilisation, evolve Arab minds, and advance the Arab world and its people. The Museum of the Future will be a space for knowledge that gathers intellectuals and futurists from all over the world. It is the largest research space of its kind, accommodating all ideas, experiences and creative conceptions,” Sheikh Mohammed added.

The Museum of the Future embodies the world’s largest idea lab and will serve as a talent incubator for scientists, thinkers and researchers. By convening them, the Museum will create a launchpad for enabling initiatives, scientific programmes and human knowledge projects that aim to contribute to the UAE and the region’s efforts to drive social, economic and human development.

The Museum employs the latest technologies, such as virtual and augmented reality, big data analysis, artificial intelligence and human machine interaction to encourage visitors to ask questions about the future of humans, cities, human societies and life on planet Earth and in space.

At the start of the tour, Sheikh Mohammed viewed the orbiting space station (OSS Hope), which has been designed as a home for humanity in space.

OSS Hope takes visitors on a virtual journey into outerspace, where they discover and learn about various missions and research projects that are underway onboard the station. On completion of this first mission inside the Museum, visitors return to Earth, to discover an imagined environment of what Dubai and the world looks like in 2071, following efforts to restore the health of the planet’s biodiversity and its resources.

He also stopped at the ‘Vault of Life’, which deploys cutting-edge virtual and augmented reality technologies to introduce visitors into an interactive experience where they collect samples from nature while exploring the biodiversity of our rainforests. Their task is to contribute to the efforts being made to restore the natural environment, rehabilitate the forest with its living species, plants and animals, and help repair the damage inflicted on the forests.

Museum of the Future is home to 100 plant species

The landscaping of the Museum was meticulously planned and planted to host these resilient native plant species that can adapt to the desert climate…reports Asian Lite News

Though the Museum of the Future in Dubai may be one of the UAE’s latest technological and architectural marvels, it also epitomises the country’s diverse natural ecosystem, which boasts a vast range of local flora, fauna, terrestrial and marine wildlife.

At first glance, one cannot help but notice the huge green plateau upon which the building stands. On closer inspection, guests discover that the hill is in fact a resplendent garden comprising around 100 species of trees and plants, reflecting the natural diversity that is an integral part of the UAE’s heritage.

Featuring ghaf, sidr, palm and acacia trees, which are well adapted to local environmental conditions, the garden is equipped with a smart, automated irrigation system and supports local bee and bird populations. The landscaping of the Museum was meticulously planned and planted to host these resilient native plant species that can adapt to the desert climate. These include bushy-leaved plants that normally grow naturally in the coastal areas of the Middle East. They are fast-growing, can tolerate hot climates and require minimal irrigation, making them ideal for the sustainable green hill that encircles the 77-metre building.

Museum of the Future is home to 100 plant species

Like many of the Museum of the Future’s elements, its landscape is truly unique. The plant species and irrigation techniques used had to consider the nature of the steep plateau and the UAE’s dry weather. Given the unique setting of the building, traditional landscaping techniques were a challenge. A novel way of planting and soiling the greenery was needed.

With Dubai’s summer temperatures hitting close to 50 degrees Celsius, and with the average rainfall of 130mm per year, irrigation was one of the main considerations for the plateau. A smart irrigation system uses a sub-surface mat that delivers water directly to the root system in a targeted, efficient approach. The plateau’s steep slopes allow quick water run-off, removing the need for water-intense flood irrigation. The hill’s steep slopes allow for rapid water flow, eliminating the need for pumped irrigation. Additionally, water collection and recycling systems are used to reduce water wastage by approximately 25 percent.

Past, Present and Future In the garden surrounding the Museum of the Future, one can see a mixture of past, present, and future elements represented, where the ghaf, sidr, palm and acacia species resemble the journey of a nation whose people gave and continue to give everything they could to elevate the nation’s global standing, while protecting and preserving its natural biodiversity.

The Ghaf Tree The ghaf tree is one of the authentic and abundant trees in the UAE’s desert and is linked to the heritage and history of the region due to its importance in the lives of early humans living in the area. It holds great cultural value due to its association to the UAE’s identity. The ghaf tree can tolerate desert heat, drought, and lack of rain. It is a strong tree that can reach almost 30 metres in height with roots extending up to 50 metres underground. In 2019, the ghaf tree was selected to be a symbol for the UAE’s ‘Year of Tolerance’.

Sidr Tree Sidr trees can be found across the UAE and can, to some extent, tolerate salinity, drought, and overgrazing. It is a tall, thorny tree, reaching about 12 metres in height. Sidr is an evergreen tree, but its leaves are shed once a year. Its roots are deep, strong, and intertwined.

Palm Trees The relation between palm trees and the UAE’s history and its people is strong. The UAE’s leadership and people give much attention to this tree. The late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan put palm trees at the centre of his agricultural and environmental project when he began laying the foundations of the young nation.

Acacia The acacia tree grows over sand dunes, rocky surfaces and at the bottom of muddy valleys. It avoids areas flooded with seasonal torrential waters. This tree can live in harsh climatic conditions and can endure low rainfall, down to 40mm a year, or heavier rainfall, up to 1,200mm a year. It can also tolerate drought and its roots extend up to 15 metres in sandy soil.
