Baerbock lauds New Delhi as she embarks on her first India trip

“The Indian government has set itself ambitious goals not only in the G20 but also at home for its own people…reports Asian Lite News

Lauding the constructive role played by India at the recently concluded G20 summit in Bali, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has credited New Delhi for the clearer positioning of Group of Twenty (G20) on the ongoing war in Ukraine.

She made these remarks on Sunday ahead of her trip to New Delhi against the backdrop of the global consequences of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. During her visit, she will be discussing cooperation on the transition to renewable energy and India’s relationship with Russia and China. “In the final month of Germany’s G7 presidency, I’m visiting India just days after it took over the G20 presidency. My talks will therefore also focus on the most urgent tasks of our time – containing the climate crisis and maintaining our rules-based international order.

“At the G20 summit in Bali (Indonesia), India showed that it is ready to play its role globally,” the German foreign minister said in her departure statement.

“The clearer positioning of the G20 against the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine is ultimately also thanks to India.

“As an emerging economic power and a solid democracy, India is both a role model and a bridge for many countries in the world, despite all the internal social challenges. And a natural partner of Germany,” she added.

“Visiting India is like visiting a sixth of the world. As early as next year, India will overtake China as the most populous country in the world. There is no doubt that India will have a decisive influence on shaping the international order in the 21st century – in the Indo-Pacific and beyond.

“And the fact that India has managed to lift more than 400 million people – almost as many as people in the EU – out of absolute poverty in the last 15 years, is impressive.”

“The Indian government has set itself ambitious goals not only in the G20 but also at home for its own people.

“When it comes to expanding renewable energies, India wants to push ahead with the energy transition more than before. Germany stands by India’s side,” the German Minister said.

She said that Germany wants to strengthen economic, climate, and security policy cooperation with India beyond just a strategic partnership. “I will also sign a mobility agreement in New Delhi that will make it easier for our people to study, do research and work in each other’s country.”

During the two-day inaugural visit, cooperation in the energy transition away from oil, coal and gas will also play a role.

On Friday, the German Federal Foreign Office said Baerbock will visit projects for renewable energies and sustainability in the rural surroundings of the capital New Delhi.

In Baerbock’s talks with her Indian counterpart External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, India’s relationship with China is likely to be discussed in addition to the Russia-Ukraine war and its consequences.

The minister will also visit the Election Commission of India, the German Foreign Office said.

Meetings are also planned with representatives of civil society and non-governmental organizations working for women’s rights.

The spokesperson added that the minister will also participate in a trilateral India forum of the transatlantic foundation German Marshall Fund, which is about cooperation in the Indo- Pacific region.

The forum is an annual meeting of American, European and Indian experts from politics, think tanks and business at different locations. It has developed into a leading platform for transatlantic and European dialogue with India.

242 Indian students evacuated safely from Ukraine

India has deployed Dreamliner B-787 aircraft for carrying out this special operation under which flights were made operational from Kharkiv in Ukraine to New Delhi…reports Asian Lite News

Amid the escalating Russia-Ukraine tensions, 242 Indian students returned safely to India at New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International airport late Tuesday evening and reunited with their parents after India started evacuation operations of Indian citizens living in Ukraine and its adjoining areas.

India has deployed Dreamliner B-787 aircraft for carrying out this special operation under which flights were made operational from Kharkiv in Ukraine to New Delhi.

Nirav Patil, a first-year MBBS student studying in Ukraine, said, “The situation is normal around the area where I live. While the university has started studies online so there is not much to worry as before.”

Another student Krishna said, “I live 900 km away from the Ukraine-Russia border. We are around five to six students, who are residents of Gujarat. Our parents were getting quite worried. This is why we had to return to India.”

Several government officials were also sent by the Rajasthan government to the Delhi airport as well as students of Rajasthan who have returned from Ukraine, the state government is busy preparing to send them safely to their home bearing their travel expenses. At present, eight students along with their parents have been asked to stay at the Rajasthan Bhawan.

However, there are several Indian students who have not returned to India by an Air India flight.

Monika, a resident of Chhattisgarh and a fifth-year MBBS student, first took a flight from Kyiv to Doha and then returned to Delhi. According to her, air tickets were quite expensive due to which she came to India taking other flights.

She did not express her opinion on the tense situation in Ukraine as many of her Indian friends are still stuck in Ukraine.

She said, “In some places, studies have been made online but in several other places offline studies are still being followed as the norm. My parents were getting quite worried due to which I had to return to India, but the situation in Ukraine is still normal. Now only if our parents ask us to return to Ukraine only then will we return.”

Air India on February 19 had announced that it would operate flights between India and Ukraine on February 22, 24 and 26. Booking of air tickets is open through Air India booking offices, website, call centres and authorised travel agents. According to the Indian embassy in Ukraine, additional flights from Kyiv to Delhi will operate on February 25, 27 (two flights) and March 6.

At the same time, many students who have returned to India are worried about their studies while some said they had also recently seen a tank used in a war in the city where they lived.

Swati, who is a second-year MBBS student, on returning to Delhi, said, “The situation is normal in Ukraine and I was living a completely normal life there. The people residing there are not worried at all about the Russia-Ukraine tensions.”

“The reason for many students like me returning to India is because of my parents. They were quite mentally disturbed and were worried about my well-being. Now since I have returned back home, our studies will suffer too. But the university where I was studying will start holding online classes. I have exams scheduled for next year.”

Another student Tanvi, who is an MBBS student, arrived in Delhi and spoke about the tense situation in Ukraine, saying, “The situation is pretty worse in Ukraine, I am quite distressed. Children studying here are living in fear, every day different kind of news is coming to fore as one is not able to come to judge which ones to believe. At the same time, air tickets have also become quite expensive.”

The parents of the students also arrived at the airport to pick up their children, but are angry due to the expensive air tickets.

A parent Ratan Singh says, “The situation in Ukraine is absolutely normal, offline studies were being conducted on Tuesday. My son is not worried at all about the overall situation there but most people in India are fast spreading rumours and fear.”

“I have booked flight tickets worth Rs 60,000, but what will those parents do who can’t afford such huge amount of money? The Government of India has sent several flights but how will we be able to book such an expensive air ticket. Till Monday, flight tickets costing Rs one lakh were being sold but after borrowing some extra money from my relatives, I booked the air ticket and called my child back to India,” he added.

Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, Minister of State for Foreign Trade, has led an official delegation to New Delhi to launch talks on expanding trade and investment relations.

During the official economic mission, Dr. Al Zeyoudi and Shri Piyush Goyal, India’s Minister of Commerce and Industry, jointly established the India – United Arab Emirates Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). It will enhance ties, deepen economic and investment opportunities, and mark a new phase of strategic cooperation between the two countries.

It is the second CEPA deal that Dr. Al Zeyoudi has commenced talks on this month, following negotiations with Indonesia, as the UAE accelerates its global trade agenda. The value of the UAE’s non-oil trade with India may rise from pre-pandemic levels of $40 billion to over $100 billion within five years of the agreement being signed.

“The UAE is moving quickly to establish new strategic agreements to expand our market access and use trade as a key pillar in a new era of economic cooperation,” Dr. Al Zeyoudi said.

DR. AL ZEYOUDI: “Trading routes have existed between India and our region for centuries. The CEPA builds on these historic ties by laying the foundation for a mutually beneficial partnership that creates new jobs, promotes foreign direct investment, empowers entrepreneurs, attracts talent and accelerates our knowledge-driven economies. It will strengthen our position as a global gateway to Africa, Asia and Europe, driving economic growth and prosperity across the region.”

DR. AHMED ALBANNA, UAE AMBASSADOR, INDIA: “The Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement between our two countries comes at a very crucial time as we brace ourselves and set economic priorities for the post-pandemic era. Now is the time for the UAE and India to work together and take coordinated actions to achieve our ambitious bilateral trade target of $100 billion. Besides trade, we are keen to augment investment flows and lead the world by example.”

India and the UAE enjoy a longstanding, mutually beneficial relationship, anchored on close cultural ties and a shared commitment to promote economic development and human prosperity. As part of Dr. Al Zeyoudi’s visit to New Delhi, he also met with Shri Jyotiraditya Scindia, India’s Minister of Civil Aviation, as well as Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, India’s Honourable Minister of Electronics and Information Technology.

Recent years have also witnessed several major foreign direct investment partnerships. In June 2020, for example, Mubadala invested $1.2 billion in India’s telecommunications provider Jio Platforms. While in 2019, UAE entities committed $7 billion to create a food corridor between the UAE and India to provide a stable market for farmers in Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat. Meanwhile, India’s Reliance recently announced an investment of $2 billion in Abu Dhabi’s TA’ZIZ Industrial Chemical Zone.

Trade underpins the UAE’s bold economic path for the next five decades and falls under the umbrella of the country’s Projects of the 50 agenda – a comprehensive roadmap designed to double the economy, enhance global competitiveness, attract foreign direct investment and enhance its position as an attractive hub for talent and investors.
