No police action against Prince Andrew

The law enforcement in the UK on Monday announced they will not take any action against Prince Andrew after a review prompted by a Jeffrey Epstein accuser who claims that he sexually assaulted her.

Virginia Giuffre claims she was trafficked by Epstein to have sex with Mr. Andrew in London in 2001, when she was age 17 and a minor under U.S. law. She is suing the prince in a U.S. court, media reported.

The London Metropolitan Police in August began a review of allegations connected to late convicted sex offender Epstein. During that time, Police chief Cressida Dick said that “no one is above the law.”

Meanwhile, the force said in a statement late Sunday that its “review has concluded and we are taking no further action.”

It also said it would take no action over allegations, first reported by Channel 4 News, that Epstein’s alleged accomplice, Ghislaine Maxwell, trafficked, groomed and abused women and girls in the UK, media reported.

Andrew, the second son of Queen Elizabeth II, stepped down from public royal life following a TV interview in which he failed to show remorse over his friendship with Epstein, and little empathy with the sex offender’s alleged victims.

Meanwhile, Andrew is denying the allegations. He told the BBC in a 2019 interview that he never had sex with Giuffre, saying, “It didn’t happen.”

Ms. Maxwell, a British socialite, is in a U.S. jail awaiting trial on charges that she recruited teenage girls for Epstein to abuse.

Need to keep police ready amid technological disruptions: Modi

Emphasizing on the need to keep police ready round the clock especially in times of technological disruptions, Modi said that the challenge was to prevent new types of crime with even more innovative methods, reports Asian Lite News

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday exhorted new police rookies, saying: “I am confident the young IPS probationers will work beyond the police stations and HQ. They will work among the people and do their best to address their problems.”

Emphasizing on the need to keep police ready round the clock especially in times of technological disruptions, Modi addressing the IPS probationers said that the challenge was to prevent new types of crime with even more innovative methods.

He stressed on the need to undertake novel experiments, research and methods for cyber security.

Modi addressed the IPS probationers at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy via video conferencing. He also interacted with the new recruits during the event. Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Minister of State (Home) Nityanand Rai were also present on the occasion.

Speaking on the occasion, the Prime Minister noted that coming August 15 will herald 75th anniversary of Independence. Last 75 years have seen efforts to build a better Police Service. In recent years, significant improvement has taken place in the infrastructure related to police training.

The Prime Minister exhorted the officer trainees to remember the spirit of the freedom struggle. He said the period between 1930 to 1947 saw the younger generation of our country rise in unison to achieve a great goal. He said that same feeling is expected in the youth of today, “They fought for ‘Swarajya’; you have to move forward for ‘Surajya’,” he said.

He asked the officer trainees to remember the significance of the time they were entering into their career when “India is undergoing transformation at every level. As their first 25 years in the service are going to be critical 25 years in the life of the country when Indian republic will move from 75 years of independence to the centenary year of its independence”.

Modi told the probationers that people expect a certain degree of conduct from them. He asked them to be always mindful of the dignity of their service not only in office or headquarters but beyond that too.


“You will have to be aware of all the roles in the society, you’ll need to remain friendly and keep the honour of the uniform supreme,” said the Prime Minister.

He reminded the officer trainees that they are the flag-bearers of ‘Ek Bharat-Shreshth Bharat’, therefore they should always keep the mantra of ‘Nation First, Always First’ foremost in their mind and it should reflect in all their activities.

In their decisions art field level they should keep national interest and national perspective in mind, said the Prime Minister.

He acknowledged the bright young women officers of the new generation and said that there have been efforts to increase the participation of women in the force.

He expressed hope “our daughters will infuse the police service with the highest standards of efficiency, accountability and will also bring in elements of politeness, ease and sensitivity”.

He also mentioned that the states are working on introducing Commissioner System in the cities with more that 10 lakh population.

The system has already been introduced in many cities of 16 states. He said it is important to work collectively and sensitively to make policing effective and futuristic.

The Prime Minister paid homage to the members of the police force who lost their life while serving during the pandemic. He recalled their contribution in the fight against the pandemic.

He said that police officers from neighbouring countries, undergoing training at the academy underline the closeness and deep relation of the countries.

He said that whether it is Bhutan, Nepal, Maldives or Mauritius, we are not just neighbours but we also share lot of similarities in our thinking and social fabric.

“We are friends in times of need and whenever there is any calamity or difficulty we are the first responders for each other. This was evident during the Covid period also,” he said.

Massive response to police recruitment drive in J&K

The government has announced two battalions each for the regions of Jammu and Kashmir….reports Asian Lite News.

As the process of recruitment for an exclusive border battalion of Jammu and Kashmir police began, hundreds of youth turned up for the physical test in Baramulla district on Sunday.

According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Maqsood-ul- Zaman who is also a recruitment board member, a large number of youth participated in the recruitment drive of Jammu and Kashmir police.

The government has announced two battalions each for the regions of Jammu and Kashmir.

There are 1,350 posts – 675 for each battalion– Zaman said, adding that about 40,000 applications have been received for the vacant posts in Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory as well as Ladakh.Speaking to ANI, Zaman said, “Jammu and Kashmir Police Border battalion recruitment rally has been organised in Baramulla district. Participants are enthusiastic. We are receiving a good response. There are a total of 1,350 posts for both battalions of Jammu and Kashmir.”

“There is total transparency in the process and we have made good use of technology for the tests,” he added.

Zaman said there was a tremendous response to the recruitment and people were enthusiastic.

“We are calling fewer candidates for the process due to COVID protocols and it will continue like this. This battalion will augment Jammu and Kashmir police and was an employment opportunity for the youth of the border areas,” said Zaman.Mohd Ayoub, a participant from Tulail LOC said, “We appeared in a physical test in which racing, high averment, and other physical tests were done in which a good number of youth passed these tests to join the police border battalion. Jammu and Kashmir police has conducted recruitment of two border battalions one in Jammu and one in Kashmir and they are giving preference to local youth.”

According to SSP, this battalion works in coordination with other security forces to protect border infiltration also and keep eyes on drug smuggling from the Pakistan side which helps to protect society. (ANI)

Met cop pleads guilty to kidnap and rape of Sarah Everard

Everard, a 33-year-old marketing executive, was last seen on March 3 in the Clapham neighborhood of south London…reports Asian Lite News.

A London metropolitan police officer has pleaded guilty to the kidnapping and rape of Sarah Everard, a 33-year-old woman whose body was found in March, leading to a national reckoning in Britain over violence against women.

Wayne Couzens, 48, made the guilty plea at the Old Bailey, the central criminal court, in London on Tuesday, a clerk from the court told CNN.

Couzens also “accepts responsibility” for killing Everard but has not yet been asked to enter a plea on the charge of murder, the Crown Prosecution Service said on Tuesday. He will next appear in court on May 9.

Everard, a 33-year-old marketing executive, was last seen on March 3 in the Clapham neighborhood of south London.

The police said that human remains had been found as part of their investigation into her disappearance, prompting an outpouring of grief from lawmakers, community leaders and London residents.

Couzens, a police constable whose primary role at the time was uniformed patrol duties of diplomatic premises, was arrested and charged with Everard’s kidnap and murder, reported CNN.

Thousands of people gathered in South London on Saturday for a vigil to pay tribute to Everard despite police warnings that the event would defy coronavirus restrictions.

The crowd chanted “Shame on you!” and “How many more!” In what became a rally against gender violence, some clapped their hands and others held tea lights or signs that read “End Violence Against Women.”

Thousands of women in the UK and around the world came forward after Everard’s death to share their own experiences of intimidation or harassment while walking alone at night, CNN reported. (ANI)

Former Kerala DGP Sreelekha slams police for inaction

On April 14, she got a call stating that her packet is ready for delivery and since it is in Covid times, she was asked to keep the cash ready at the gate of her residence…reports Asian Lite News.

R. Sreelekha, the first woman to become Director General of Police in Kerala in June last year and subsequently retiring in December, on Wednesday aired her displeasure and sadness on how a complaint of hers went unnoticed and unheard for two weeks this month.

Stressing that until four months back she was part of the Kerala Police and retired as DGP, she said: “Despite that, even after two weeks of informing over telephone about on how I was cheated by an online company and also sending a complaint to the Museum Police Station, no action came and feeling deeply sad, I am writing it in my Facebook.

Sreelekha said that on April 6, she had placed an online order for a Bluetooth earphone.

On April 14, she got a call stating that her packet is ready for delivery and since it is in Covid times, she was asked to keep the cash ready at the gate of her residence.

The packet was subsequently handed over to her aide, as she was recovering from a surgery.

“As soon as I got the packet, I knew it was a fraud and when I opened it, I saw an old broken earphone. I immediately called back on the number I got for the delivery call. The person said, ‘you can go and give a complaint to the police, but you are not going to get the money back’. I immediately called up the Museum Police station and the officer said he was busy with some big case. Later he called me and heard my complaint and soon I sent my complaint through the e-mail. There was no response from the police for two weeks,” wrote Sreelekha.

She added that lot of her friends and relatives called her up to seek her help to get the police to act.

“Will anyone believe or understand when I say that my own complaint is not being heard. In the past I have had similar experiences from this very same police station when I raised three complaints.

“Today after I put up this Facebook post, I got a call from the Museum Police official and he said they have not got my e-mail complaint and he gave me a new id and I sent it,” she posted.

Sreelekha concluded with a warning to be wary of the website of ‘grimsonz’ and Ekart – the delivery firm and asks all to do online purchases using the cash on delivery option as they can check before paying.
