Imran Khan’s PTI Faces Crisis as Nomination Papers Rejected

The PTI also lost its electoral symbol ‘bat’ leaving the party’s nominated candidates with no other option but to contest as independent candidates…reports Asian Lite News

Future of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), which emerged as a major political party in the country in the 2013 general polls, is in the doldrums as nomination papers of several party leaders, including founder Imran Khan, have been rejected by the Election Commission of Pakistan over corruption charges.

Though Khan, former prime minister, is languishing in jail on charges of corruption and misplacement of secret document for 14 years and 10 years respectively, he enjoys love and support of many.

The PTI also lost its electoral symbol ‘bat’ leaving the party’s nominated candidates with no other option but to contest as independent candidates.

With PTI and its leader Imran Khan out of the picture, many believe that the tone for the polls has already been set as the country heads towards another process of “selection” rather than “election”.

It is believed that the May 9, 2023 riots, triggered after the arrest of Khan in Islamabad, which saw angry party supporters storming military installations across the country, became the prime reason for the downfall of PTI and its leadership.

“The military establishment under COAS (Chief of Army Staff) General Syed Asim Munir seems to have decided to dismantle and destroy PTI as part of their punishment for attacking military installations on 9th May,” said senior political analyst Javed Siddique.

“We see an open, blatant and targeted dismantling of PTI, its workers, its leaders and its founder as anyone and everyone who tries to even come out of their home with a PTI flag are taken into custody. The party is not allowed to hold even a corner meeting for political campaigning. Its candidates are now contesting polls under multiple election symbols in independent capacity. It is almost clear to all now that PTI has been kept out of these elections deliberately,” he added.

A different version of analysis on PTI still remains that while it may not be contesting the upcoming elections, the party itself may be a major asset for the military establishment after the formation of the new elected government.

“PTI and Khan have proven many interesting facts about themselves. There are a set of people who follow Khan more than the party’s policy. They have also proven that they are not equipped or competent to run a national government. But they have also proven that they can send shockwaves in any government through protests, street power shows, resistance campaigns and long marches, which in the past have proven to be very effective and have kept ruling governments on their toes,” said political analyst Ayub Khan.

“So I think that PTI may not have any say in the upcoming polls, but it certainly is a major tool for the military establishment or even for itself to cause serious damage to any ruling governments. And that is what I think now, will keep the presence of PTI alive in the future,” he added.

“It is an open secret in Pakistan that the former PTI chief’s followers and supporters have been silenced but are still intact. The ongoing targeted cleansing operation against the party, its leaders and supporters may have yielded results for the polls, but it certainly cannot be sustained for long,” he said.

Many people are of the view that soon after the general elections, the former prime minister will be out and emerge more stronger. He will challenge the ruling government through big rallies and anti-government long marches, a tool that the country’s powerful military establishment would always want to keep in its backup plan.

Amid Turmoil, PTI Considers Dialogues with Political Opponents

The PTI leader added that the party will field independent candidates in case of a ban on the party to contest polls…reports Asian Lite News

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) which is struggling amid multiple cases on its top brass including former Prime Minister Imran Khan, is slowly changing its tone realising that it may have to sit down with other political stakeholders, including the arch-rivals Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), Dawn reported.

“Although the party is not ready to hold negotiations with the PPP and PML-N, it seems we may be left with no other option but to talk to these parties,” a PTI leader told reporters.

He said that regarding this, a chapter on “healing the politics” has been included in the party manifesto as well.

The leader further claimed that actions against PTI workers and activists have not dented its spirits, adding that after its “successful power shows” in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa — despite restrictions — the party has decided to organise countrywide conventions to rejuvenate its election bid, even if the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) does not allocate it the ‘bat’ symbol, Dawn reported.

The PTI leader added that the party will field independent candidates in case of a ban on the party to contest polls.

During the briefing, party leaders said they were aware of efforts to keep the PTI out of the elections and a counter-strategy in this regard was also in place.

“We have decided to contest the February 8 election on any electoral symbol…and we are ready to field independent candidates in case of a ban,” a senior PTI leader told Dawn.

As per the PTI leader, the party has also learned from its past mistakes. For instance, it will not pick the “wrong persons” to represent the party, nor will it form a government without having a clear majority in parliament.

“It was also a blunder to form the government in 2018 as we did not have a clear majority,” he said, adding that such a move “would not be repeated in the future”.

He added that Imran Khan has also realised that “it was not a wise decision to make the government in 2018 without having a clear majority” in the National Assembly.

Another representative of PTI said that the powers that be were frustrated as they were hoping that Khan would not be able to last a single day in jail but now he has spent almost 130 days in ‘detention’, Dawn reported.

“But the PTI’s popularity increased after the arrest of Imran Khan and this situation can force them to delay or suspend the elections. In that case, the Supreme Court could play its role,” he said.

On being asked about recent appointments in the party, particularly of its chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, the PTI leader said Imran Khan had asked Hamid Khan to become the Chairman of the party, but the latter refused.

Regarding the claims that the party had been hijacked by lawyers, he said the PTI managed to “get the affiliation and sympathies” of a majority among the lawyers’ community.

Replying to a question about Afghan immigrants, the PTI leader criticised the government for mishandling the Afghan issue.

“It will increase problems for Pakistan and we will not be able to make the Pak-Afghan border peaceful,” Dawn quoted him as saying. (ANI)

Gohar Ali Khan Replaces Imran Khan As PTI Chairman

PTI chief Imran Khan had nominated Gohar Khan to succeed him as he was unable to contest polls due to his disqualification in the Toshakhana case

Lawyer Gohar Ali Khan was on Saturday was elected unopposed as the new chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) after its intra-party elections were held earlier in the day.

PTI chief Imran Khan had nominated Gohar Khan to succeed him as he was unable to contest polls due to his disqualification in the Toshakhana case, The News reported.

Omar Ayub Khan was also chosen as the party’s central general secretary unopposed, party’s Chief Election Commissioner Niazullah Niazi said in Peshawar while announcing the results.

He shared that Ali Amin Gandapur and Yasmin Rashid have been chosen as the party’s provincial presidents in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab, respectively.

The PTI intra-party elections were held in line with the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) orders to secure its election symbol “bat” for the general elections slated to take place in February next year, The News reported.

Speaking with journalists in Peshawar, Gohar Khan said he will take on the responsibilities of the chairman as Imran Khan’s representative.

“We will take the country forward but as long as I am here, I will (act as) Imran Khan’s representative who is in jail because of his principled struggle. PTI will not fight anyone,” he said.

He lamented that none of the political parties “faced this sort of elections” like the PTI did, adding that the court did not look into other parties’ receiving foreign funding.

The intra-party polls hold immense importance in the country’s current political climate as the party’s Chairman Imran Khan, for the first time since PTI’s inception, decided to hand over the chairmanship to Gohar Khan, who will be holding the party reigns until the Khan’s release from jail, The News reported.

Earlier this week, PTI member and senior lawyer Ali Zafar announced Gohar’s name as the party’s chair, adding that his position is temporary, as Khan would return as chairman once his disqualification in the wake of the Toshakhana case is overturned.

PTI Forms ‘Political Engagement’ Panel

The recent development comes days after the former ruling party’s announcement to contest general elections from “all constituencies…reports Asian Lite News

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Wednesday announced the formation of a “political engagement committee” to reach out to rival parties ahead of the upcoming polls, Geo News reported.

The five-member committee, which includes Senator Ali Zafar, Senator Dr Humayun Mohmand, Ali Muhammad Khan, Ali Asghar Khan, and Raoof Hasan, read the party notification shared on its official X account.

The recent development comes days after the former ruling party’s announcement to contest general elections from “all constituencies” at both provincial and national levels, reported Geo News, a Pakistani news channel.

As per Geo News, the PTI has traditionally taken a hardline stance against political opponents, most notably the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) and others, accusing the country of a lot of corruption and looting.

The PTI’s move to decide to reach out to political parties comes as past opponents are becoming future allies with political parties, leaving their old enmities behind and striving to forge new political alliances to strengthen their position ahead of the general elections scheduled to be held on February 8 next year.

The Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) (PML-N) and Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) announced on Tuesday that they would contest the upcoming general elections in Pakistan together, Dawn reported.

The announcement comes days after the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and Pakistan President Arif Alvi agreed on February 8, 2024, as the date for polls.

As per Dawn, prior to the elections, the rivalry between the Nawaz-led party and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) gained momentum as the latter alleged that the PML-N has a hidden alliance with the current caretaker government.

The PPP recently announced that it was open to forming an electoral alliance with the PTI to counter former ally PML-N.

The PML-N, the PPP and the MQM were coalition partners in the previous government and had joined hands to remove Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI)’s Imran Khan from power. (ANI)

Imran Khan: PTI members forced out at ‘gunpoint’

The former premier maintained that he is not bothered by several PTI leaders who have in recent days called it quits….reports Asian Lite News

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan claimed on Tuesday that members of his party are being forced to leave the PTI at “gunpoint”, media reports said.

Speaking informally to journalists at an anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Islamabad, Khan said, “People are not leaving the party on their own, they are being forced to do so, and that too at gunpoint,” The Express Tribune reported.

However, the former premier maintained that he is not bothered by the several PTI leaders who have in recent days called it quits, saying that “parties never die down like that; they are weeded out like the [ruling coalition] PDM is eroding, the way their vote bank is depleting”.

“I am only worried about the workers, especially the women,” he added, The Express Tribune reported.

The PTI chief made these remarks ahead of his hearing at the ATC where judge Raja Jawad Abbas was hearing his petition for bail in eight different cases. The ATC granted interim bail to former Prime Minister Imran Khan in eight cases registered against him until June 8 related to violence that erupted at the Judicial Complex in March.

Multiple cases were registered against Imran Khan after clashes erupted between police and his supporters before he appeared at the judicial complex on March 18. Security was beefed up at the judicial complex and the NAB office ahead of the PTI chief’s arrival and a heavy contingent of police were deployed there to deal with any untoward incident, reported ARY News.

Today, Khan reached the Islamabad judicial complex, ahead of his appearance before the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) at its Rawalpindi office in the Pound 190 million settlement case.

The accused has to join the investigation after security interim bail but Imran Khan is saying his leg is injured and he cannot join the probe.

Slew of leaders exit PTI

PTI leaders Shireen Mazari and Fayyazul Hassan Chohan announced quitting the Imran Khan-led Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in a major setback to the top opposition party, which has seen a slew of leaders parting ways with it following the May 9 violence, media reports said.

The development came as several party leaders and lawmakers, including Aamir Mehmood Kiani, Malik Amin Aslam, Mahmood Moulvi and Aftab Siddiqui, among others, have publicly denounced the attacks on the state installations and announced leaving the former ruling party since the May 9 vandalism triggered by the arrest of Imran Khan, The News reported.

Addressing a press conference here, Mazari, a former federal minister and a close aide of Khan, condemned the May 9 riots during which PTI supporters ransacked and torched public and defence installations across the country, The News reported.

“I strongly condemn the May 9 violence. I have always condemned violence of any kind,” she remarked.

Mazari said she is not only leaving the party, but also politics.

“From today onwards, I am not a part of any political party,” she said.

The senior PTI leader also said that her health deteriorated during in the last 12 days of detention.

“My children and parents are [now] my priority. I condemn the violence against state symbols like the GHQ, parliament and the Supreme Court,” she added.

Sharing her ordeal, Mazari said her daughter, Imaan Mazari, had to go through a tough time due to her repeated arrests.

“When I was taken to jail for the third time, my daughter was crying a lot, I saw her video,” she said.

The seasoned politician went on to say that she had also submitted an affidavit to the Islamabad High Court (IHC) pledging that she will not become part of any violent protest in the future, The News reported.

The senior vice-president of the former ruling party had been arrested several times during the past few days following the May 9 riots triggered by the arrest of the former Prime Minister in the Al-Qadir Trust case.

Imran blames General Munir for arrest

PTI chief Imran Khan said “Army Chief General Asim Munir is worried that if I come to power, I will de-notify him.”

Former Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan has blamed the army chief for his “abduction” on May 9 and distanced himself from violence that took place in several cities after his arrest.

He expressed these views while having brief conversation with media persons on the premises of the Islamabad High Court on Friday, reports Dawn.

“It’s not the security agencies. It’s one man, the army chief. There is no democracy in the army. The army is getting maligned with what is happening,” the PTI chief replied when asked about the impression that security agencies were against him whereas the judiciary was favouring him.

“And he (the army chief) is worried that if I come to power, I will de-notify him. Which, I tried my best to send him a message, I will not. All this is happening is direct orders from him. He is the one who is convinced that if I win, he will be de-notified,” alleged Khan.

The former premier also talked about “victimisation” of his party by the government, alleging that “5,000 people have been arrested during the last one year”, Dawn reported.

Khan said he had survived two assassination attempts and had only called for an investigation, regretting that his demand had been rejected.

Reiterating his position which he took in the Supreme Court on Thursday evening, the PTI chair said he was totally unaware of the developments which took place after his arrest and claimed that he had learnt that 40 people had lost their lives during the two-day protests.

Expressing “sadness” over the events that took place when he was in the custody of NAB, Khan stated that “the army is getting maligned because of just one man”, Dawn reported.

The development comes amid the ongoing crackdown on the PTI leaders and workers. Fawad Chaudhry was present inside the Pakistan Supreme Court since 11 am (local time) in a bid to evade arrest, as per the news report. Chaudhry was arrested after he came out of the apex court premises. The Islamabad police has arrested Chaudhry under Section 3 of the Maintenance of Public Ordinance (MPO) and shifted him to the Secretariat Police Station.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf tweeted, “SVP @fawadchaudhry has been arrested outside Supreme Court despite having protective bail from IHC till 12th May. Law of the jungle is ruling in Pakistan.”

He said, “Never has a petitioner been arrested in such a manner,” Geo News reported. Chaudhry said Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan’s arrest has resulted in a division in the country, as per the Geo News report. He said that space should be given to political opponents to pave the way for dialogue. Before Fawad Chaudhry’s arrest, the Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) arrested PTI Secretary General Asad Umar from the premises of the Islamabad High Court.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s accountability court has granted the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) eight-day remand of former Prime Minister Imran Khan in the Al-Qadir Trust graft case, Samaa reported. The Accountability Court Judge Muhammad Bashir had earlier heard the case and reserved his verdict.

At the outset of the hearing, the country’s top anti-corruption body sought 14-day physical remand of the former premier, Samaa reported. Imran’s council contended that NAB has no jurisdiction in the case, adding the anti-graft watchdog also did not share the inquiry report.

He maintained that a fair trial is Imran Khan’s fundamental right. “Imran Khan’s trial should be held in open court,” his counsel urged the court. After the hearing, the former PM’s lawyer held a press conference where he claimed that Khan alleged in court that he was tortured in custody and was not allowed to even use the washroom, according to the video posted by PTI’s official Twitter handle.

Police target PTI second-tier leadership in Lahore

The police targeted the party’s second-tier leadership in a new round of raids in order to weaken its position…reports Asian Lite News

The Lahore police continued massive raids in various parts of the city, arresting dozens more Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) workers amid allegations of harassment and abuse of power, Dawn reported.

The police targeted the party’s second-tier leadership in a new round of raids in order to weaken its position. DIG investigation Sohail Akhtar Sukhera, who is in charge of the operations, is said to have directed the police to crack down on the PTI workers. Police officials are avoiding media inquiries about the number of arrests made on Monday. The PTI leadership, on the other hand, claimed dozens of arrests and said that the crackdown had intensified after midnight.

According to a report published in Dawn, several police teams were dispatched to the leaders’ and party workers’ homes, offices, and other possible locations to arrest them based on lists provided to them following high-level meetings.

The PTI leadership has accused the police of ‘misusing power,’ claiming that officers harassed their family members, including children and women while forcing entry into their homes.

They told the media persons that the police had launched action against the PTI’s leaders and workers in Lahore soon after Caretaker Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi gave the police a free hand in the name of ‘the writ of the law’.

The police raided the homes of Hafiz Farhat Abbas, the PTI chairman’s political secretary, and Kiran Nadeem, the PTI candidate running in PP-158, as well as dozens of other party leaders and workers.

A mobile phone video of a police team going to the house of PTI leader Musarat Cheema at around 1:30 am on Monday went viral on social media.

The now-viral video shows police vans stationed outside her house and deployed force asking the family to assure that no family members, including children, would participate in anti-police street protests. The family claims that the police abused their authority by raiding their home in the middle of the night while the family members were sleeping.

According to reports, police detained Cheema’s employees after they were unable to locate her at home. She was not at her residence at the time of the raid.

A large police force raided the home of PTI leader Bajash Khan Niazi, who owns the city’s leading private transportation company.

In a video posted on his social media account, Bajash Niazi stated that the police raided and shut down his company’s office at 2 am. He also said that the company’s workshop and his brother Hammad Niazi’s office were raided and forcibly closed. He claimed that police raided not only his house but also his brother’s to intimidate them for supporting Imran Khan.

However, the police were unable to arrest him, his cousins, and other party members.

Bajash Niazi claimed in a media statement that the police committed brutality by targeting him, his relatives, and his business.

He claimed that he had submitted nomination papers for the PTI party’s PP-146 constituency two days prior and that the police were threatening to shut down his business if he continued to contest elections, according to Dawn.

According to reports, the police detained Jamaat-i-Islami leader Abdul Qayyum, a candidate for election in PP-166, Lahore.

Qaisar Sharif, a Jamaat-e-Islami spokesperson, confirmed Abdul Qayyum’s arrest, alleging that the police were conducting raids and harassing Jamaat workers.

The police also raided the Baghbanpura house of Mian Tariq, the office-bearer of the PTI’s ‘Tiger Force,’ to arrest him. Tariq was not present during the raid, according to sources cited by Dawn. Later, he said in a media statement that the police blatantly broke the law by scaling the boundary walls of his house to break into it. He accused the police of harassing his family’s women.

Raids were also carried out early on Monday at the homes of Khawaja Riaz Mahmood and his son Khawaja Salman in Gowalmandi.

Asif Jutt, the son of PTI worker Jamshed Jutt, was reportedly arrested from his home in Nishat Colony, Dawn reported. (ANI)
