Qualcomm unveils innovator kit to empower developers

In a bid to empower new developers, chip major Qualcomm has announced an ‘Innovators Development Kit’ that will first be available to select universities and research institutions for on-device machine learning applications.

The company said that it will enable developers to work across various Qualcomm Technologies software solutions to minimise time-to-market and increase customisation.

“Providing new developer communities with access to our technologies will further enable innovation that accelerates the digital economy and drives the greater good,” said Ziad Asghar, vice president of product management, Qualcomm Technologies, at the company’s flagship ‘Snapdragon Summit 2022’ here.

It offers a hardware development kit based on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform, software tools and support for a new community of developers.

This Qualcomm Innovators Development Kit will later expand to additional developer segments, such as security, multimedia, embedded systems computing and more.

“Improving time-to-market for developers by minimising the time from intent to prototype will allow these communities to leverage our aOne Technology Roadmap’ for their product needs,” said Qualcomm.

Several leading research institutions in the US, including Duke, MIT, and University of California San Diego, are sampling the Qualcomm Innovators Development Kit in the coming months.

Through the availability of tools and resources, including the Qualcomm AI Stack, the developer kit allows developers to conduct on-device AI research in order to create cutting-edge AI applications, allowing for even more flexibility with end solutions, said the company.

Chip-maker Qualcomm has acquired Cellwize Wireless Technologies, a leader in mobile network automation and management, for an undisclosed sum.

The acquisition will boost Qualcomm’s as a leader in 5G Radio Access Networks (RAN) innovation and adoption.

“The addition of Cellwize’s best-in-class RAN automation technologies strengthens Qualcomm Technologies’ ability to drive the development of the modern 5G network,” said Durga Malladi, SVP and general manager, cellular modems and infrastructure, Qualcomm.

Global mobile operators and private enterprises are deploying 5G networks at an unprecedented pace across industries with the goal of connecting everyone and everything to the cloud.

Cellwize’s 5G network deployment, automation, and management software platform capabilities further strengthens Qualcomm’ 5G infrastructure solutions to fuel the digital transformation of industries, power the connected intelligent edge, and support the growth of the cloud economy.

84% of illegal remittance of Xiaomi India were to Qualcomm

After the Enforcement Directorate (ED) seized nearly Rs 5,551.3 crore from Xiaomi India under Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) for illegal remittances to foreign entities, reliable sources said on Monday that about 84 per cent of the seized royalty remittances were made to US-based chip maker Qualcomm Group.

Sources close to the development told IANS that approximately Rs 4,663.1 crore were paid to Qualcomm via proper banking channels.

Xiaomi uses Qualcomm chipsets in the majority of its devices, and pays royalty to the US-based major for various licensed technologies that include standard essential patents and other intellectual property (IP), beyond just using its chipsets.

Any smartphone or other consumer electronics company that does not make royalty payments can be punished for patent infringement.

However, according to the ED, Xiaomi did not avail any such third-party services.

In a press release, the watchdog had said that “Xiaomi India has not availed any service from the three foreign-based entities to whom such amounts have been transferred”.

In a statement, Xiaomi India said it can’t comment as the matter is in the court.

“This matter is subjudice and under the consideration of the court of law. We refuse to comment on this,” the company told IANS.

Last week, in a major relief to Xiaomi India, the Karnataka High Court permitted it to take overdrafts from banks and make payments.

However, the court excluded the payment of technology royalty.

Vacation Judge Justice S. Sunil Dutt Yadav also extended the interim order till May 23 and stated that the matter is now between the banks and the petitioner company.

The court had given conditional stay on the order given by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on April 29 to seize Rs 5,513.3 crore.

The ED took the step after invoking the Foreign Exchange Management Act, 1999.

Senior advocate S. Ganeshan argued that Xiaomi India was being targeted as it is a Chinese company and other companies are allowed to make payments of technology royalty.

Seeking clarification on the earlier interim order on May 5, he argued that banks are not allowing Xiaomi to make remittances in foreign exchange for imports following the court order.

He explained that the company is required to make payments for foreign companies in connection with manufacturing and marketing smartphones.

Xiaomi maintained that royalty payments made to three companies abroad would not violate the FEMA Act. The company further maintained that the I-T Department itself had allowed it as a value added activity.

Chip-maker Qualcomm has announced a new robotics platform that will support manufacturers looking to integrate ground robots in industrial use cases across sectors.

The Qualcomm ‘Robotics RB6’ platform and the ‘RB5 AMR Reference Design’ solution will accelerate the digital transformation of industries across government service applications, logistics, healthcare, retail, warehousing, agriculture, construction, utilities and more, the company said during its ‘5G Summit’ late on Tuesday.

“Our expanded roadmap of solutions will help bring enhanced AI and 5G technologies to support smarter, safer, and more advanced innovations across robotics, drones and intelligent machines,” said Dev Singh, Senior Director of Business Development and Head of Autonomous Robotics, Drones and Intelligent Machines at Qualcomm.

“We are fueling robotics innovations with 5G connectivity and premium edge-AI that will transform how we think and approach challenges and ever-evolving industry expectations in the digital economy,” he added.

The ‘Robotics RB6’ platform delivers state-of-the-art 5G connectivity with support for global sub-6GHz and mmWave bands in mainstream, enterprise, and private networks.

The elevated platform brings premium, edge AI and video processing capabilities through the enhanced Qualcomm AI Engine, with support for 70-200 trillion operations per second, informed the company.

Qualcomm said it continues to collaborate with leading robotics, drones, and intelligent machines ecosystem leaders to drive innovation for premium 5G, and edge-AI enabled solutions.

“We are pleased to support new devices being developed on the Qualcomm Robotics RB6 platform to simplify enterprise 5G driven modernisation,” said Shriraj Gaglani, general manager for Azure for Operators, Microsoft.

Qualcomm tops global loT chip market

Qualcomm topped the global cellular internet of things (IoT) chipset market with a 38 per cent share in terms of shipments in the fourth quarter of 2021, a new report has said.

Qualcomm grew its share both annually and sequentially with traction across key segments and has broadened its portfolio of IoT solutions, targeting specific verticals like retail, automotive, industrial IoT and smart cities, according to Counterpoint Research.

It has also launched an IoT services suite covering more than 30 verticals to enhance platform support for IoT-as-a-service (IoTaaS) applications and accelerator programmes (like smart cities).

“Qualcomm, UNISOC and ASR held the top three positions in the global cellular IoT chipset market in Q4 2021, accounting for nearly 75 per cent of the total shipments,” said research analyst Anish Khajuria.

Overall, global cellular IoT chipset shipments grew 57 per cent (on-year) in Q4 2021.

China continued to dominate the cellular IoT chipset market by accounting for nearly 60 per cent of the shipments.

Samsung also launched a 5G chipset targeting automotive applications.

It may provide strong competition to Qualcomm and MediaTek if it can enter a strong partnership with automakers, the report mentioned.

“Smart meter, POS, router/CPE, industrial and automotive were the top five applications in terms of shipments in Q4 2021,” said Vice President Research Neil Shah.

“We forecast that smart meters, industrial and router/CPE will grow the most in the future,” he added.

Qualcomm invests Rs 3,904 crore in Hyderabad operations

American multinational corporation Qualcomm will be investing Rs 3,904.55 crore to expand their Hyderabad operations and are planning to inaugurate their second largest campus outside the US in October 2022.

This investment would be made over a period of five years and will lead to an employment generation for about 8,700 software professionals.

The new campus coming up in Hyderabad will be spread over an area of 1.572 million square feet in Rayadurgam. The campus will be ready for inauguration by October 2022.

The leadership team of Qualcomm informed this to Telangana’s Information Technology and Industries Minister K.T. Rama Rao, who is currently on a visit to the US.

The leadership team from Qualcomm comprising their CFO, Akash Palkhiwala, VPs James Jean, Laxmi Rayapudi, Parag Agashe, and Senior Director Dev Singh met Rama Rao at their headquarters in San Diego.

During the meeting, the Telangana government agreed to partner with Qualcomm in areas such as agriculture, Smart Cities, digital education, and connected devices.

KTR, as the minister is popularly known, also met electric vehicle company Fisker Inc’s Chairman & CEO Henrik Fisker, CFO Geeta Fisker, and the management team.

He thanked the leadership team of Fisker for choosing Hyderabad to set up their IT Development Center. The initial headcount of this upcoming center will be 300 IT professionals.

During the meeting, KTR gave an overview about the EV policy of Telangana. On his invitation, a team from Fisker would visit Hyderabad soon to understand the local EV ecosystem and explore other avenues of collaboration.

Fisker’s first EV Car model Ocean will be launched later this year. Upcoming Pear model will be launched in 2023-24. Fisker plans to produce about 2.5 Lakh vehicles per year.

Ferrari teams up with Qualcomm to build smarter cars

Chipmaker Qualcomm Technologies has announced a strategic technology collaboration with luxury sports car brand Ferrari that is aimed at helping accelerate the digital transformation of the carmaker.

Qualcomm Technologies will serve as Ferrari’s systems solutions provider for its upcoming Ferrari road cars, as well as a Premium Partner for the Scuderia Ferrari Formula 1 team and Ferrari eSports team.

“We are excited to see our automotive technology leadership play an integral role in this new strategic relationship with Ferrari,” Cristiano Amon, President and CEO of Qualcomm, said in a statement.

“We look forward to helping shape what the future holds as we work together to bring world-class driving experiences to their customers through our Snapdragon Digital Chassis,” Amon added.

Ferrari will work with Qualcomm Technologies to utilise the Snapdragon Digital Chassis to bring the latest automotive technology advancements to Ferrari road cars.

The Snapdragon Digital Chassis is comprised of open and scalable cloud-connected platforms needed for next-generation vehicles, which includes telematics and connectivity, the digital cockpit and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) as well as ADAS functions and utilises a unified architecture to deliver enhanced safety and immersive digital experiences that are updateable throughout the lifetime of the vehicles.

As a part of the agreement, Qualcomm Technologies and its partners will also work with Ferrari to design, develop and integrate Ferrari’s digital cockpits.

Qualcomm Technologies will begin serving as a Premium Partner of the Scuderia Ferrari Formula 1 team at the start of the 2022 FIA Formula One World Championship race season where Snapdragon will be featured on the new Scuderia Ferrari’s F1-75 single-seaters.

“We believe innovation requires market leaders working together,” said Benedetto Vigna, CEO of Ferrari.

After their meeting, the Prime Minister’s Office tweeted that they “had a productive interaction. PM Modi highlighted the vast opportunities India offers. Mr. Amon expressed keenness to work with India in areas such as 5G and other @_DigitalIndia efforts”.

It added that they discussed “investment opportunities in hi-tech sectors in India. Discussed recent electronics & telecom manufacturing PLI schemes; & measures to strengthen innovation ecosystem”.
