‘Modern Masters’: Rajamouli’s Rise from Local Talent to Global Icon

‘Modern Masters: SS Rajamouli’ celebrates the filmmaker’s illustrious journey from a humble background to becoming an international name…writes Soumya Tare

Watching ‘Modern Masters: SS Rajamouli’, a Netflix documentary, is like watching the filmmaker’s own drama!

Like the Indian-turned-global director treats his hero, the docu-film treats him the same way. Like his emotionally charged films, the documentary, too, tries to tap into the same beats. The last montage sequence of him winning an Oscar and the Golden Globe Award makes the audience cheer for him, just like they do for a hero’s triumph.

‘Modern Masters: SS Rajamouli’ celebrates the filmmaker’s illustrious journey from a humble background to becoming an international name.

Director Raghav Khanna beautifully weaves interview clips into an engaging narrative structure. The film features his elaborate and much-talented family members, actors Prabhas, Ram Charan, Jr NTR, Rana Daggubati, director-producer Karan Johar, and the world-known James Caron.

As Rajamouli talks about witnessing his father’s struggle as a filmmaker and its impact on his filmography, it instantly reminds one of Sanjay Leela Bhansali. He, too, talks about how his deprivation of space in childhood led him to become a grandeur filmmaker. It would be exciting to watch someone dive deep into the analysis of how these voids have gifted the nation the most majestic storytellers.

The documentary positions Rajamouli as a ‘Karma Yogi’. While discussing his practice of atheism, the filmmaker insightfully talks about Sanatan Dharma and its stance on treating work as God.

V. Vijayendra Prasad, his father, says in the docu-drama that he respects his son’s religious choice. It reminds one of Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s speech where he said, “Unki Nastikta Me Bhi Jo Astikta Hai Main Uska Aadar Karta Hu” (I respect his theism in atheism.)

What brings home is the climatic sequence, highlighting Rajamouli’s international accolades, which fills viewers with pride as he brings Indian cinema to the global stage. The documentary concludes on the note that the filmmaker wants to keep the Indian stories alive through his work.

Anupama Chopra, a celebrated film critic, holds the narration together.

But while she is known for her impeccable and insightful questions, the documentary fails to deliver the audience a peek into Rajamouli’s process. It doesn’t tell us much about his process, imagination, what the worldwide acclaim has done to him, or what he has in store next for cinema lovers.

While the documentary captures Rajamouli’s achievements, it does not entirely fulfil the promise of its title, ‘Modern Masters’. Instead, it maintains a laudatory tone, focusing more on his accolades than his filmmaking expertise.

You can watch ‘Modern Masters: SS Rajamouli’ on Netflix.

Cameron and Russo Applaud Rajamouli’s Craft

International filmmakers James Cameron and Joe Russo have opened up on Indian director S S Rajamouli’s cinematic sorcery, sharing how he balances action, drama, and emotion that makes his films a true spectacle.

In a rare and insightful discussion featured in the upcoming docu-film ‘Modern Masters: S.S. Rajamouli’, Cameron and Russo delve into Rajamouli’s storytelling wizardry. They marvel at his talent for creating worlds that are both epic and profoundly human.

James shared his thoughts in the docu-film, saying: “Well, that’s quite a compliment. As filmmakers now, we all have the same influences as we were coming up, as we were growing up, the things that impressed us. But he’s (Rajamouli) made it his own in a very — I want to say, a muscular style, but I’m not referring to the strength and the physicality of the actors.”

“Although he celebrates that very well. But it’s very…it’s a style that’s just got a lot of energy, a lot of dynamism…a lot of it kind of sears into your consciousness in an unforgettable way,” he added.

Both Cameron and Russo applauded Rajamouli’s fearless innovative spirit, commending his relentless pursuit of cinematic innovation and his willingness to push the boundaries of what’s possible on the big screen.

Commenting on the scale of ‘RRR’ and Rajamouli’s craftsmanship, Joe Russo added: “I think people were blown away by ‘RRR’ in Hollywood. I just think that the level of craft exhibited here is equal to any major film that comes out of Hollywood, any large-scale movie.”

Produced by Applause Entertainment and Film Companion Studios, “Modern Masters” is directed by Raghav Khanna and is now streaming on Netflix.

Rajamouli’s latest release, the Telugu epic period action drama ‘RRR’, stars NTR Jr, Ram Charan, Ajay Devgn, Alia Bhatt, Shriya Saran, Samuthirakani, Ray Stevenson, Alison Doody, and Olivia Morris.

The film has won the Academy Award for ‘Best Original Song’ for ‘Naatu Naatu’.

‘RRR’ = ‘Rise Roar Revolt’= Simply Rajamouli Magic

The first two acts of the plot move at a leisurely pace, but the last act is hurriedly wrapped up in the last 30 minutes. There is a lot of gore in the form of torture — and that is when your spirits dip…writes Troy Rebeiro

(Running in Theatres); Duration: 187 minutes, Director: S.S. Rajamouli. Cast: Jr NTR, Ram Charan, Ajay Devgn, Alia Bhatt, Olivia Morris, Samuthirakani, Alison Doody, Ray Stevenson and Shriya Saran. (Rating: ***)

Director S.S. Rajamouli’s ‘RRR’, which is the abbreviation for ‘Roudram Ranam Rudhiram’ or ‘Rise Roar Revolt’, is a torture fest, literally and figuratively, unless you view the film as a fantasy fiction catering to the masses.

Set in 1920s India, this is a fictitious story about two revolutionaries who, away from home, take it upon themselves to fight the British.

The narrative, divided into three chapters begins with ‘The Story’. It tells us how Mali, a pre-teen girl from the Gond tribe of the Deccan forests, is forcibly taken from her home and her parents to Delhi at the behest of Mrs Buxton, wife of the British Governor Scott Buxton.

The next chapter, ‘The Fire’, introduces us to the daredevil policeman, A. Rama Raju (Ram Charan), who goes all-out to impress his British boss.

The third chapter, ‘The Water’, presents Bheem (Jr NTR), the forest dweller who travels to Delhi disguised as Akhtar, a Muslim man, to rescue Mali, the girl from his tribe.

How Rama and Bheem meet, form a bond of contrived friendship, and take on British colonials, forms the crux of the magnum opus. Adding to the plot is Bheem’s brief romance with Jenny (Olivia Morris), Rama’s back-story, and his lady love, Sita (Alia Bhatt), waiting for him.

The film is packed with cinematic excesses and liberties. It opens with visually impressive frames and scenes, but gradually the novelty wears off as the storytelling appears lame and tiresome. It is only when the narrative breaks into its first song, ‘Nacho Nacho’ (‘Naatu Naatu’ in the Telugu original) that the screen comes alive, and thereafter the plot gains momentum.

The first two acts of the plot move at a leisurely pace, but the last act is hurriedly wrapped up in the last 30 minutes. There is a lot of gore in the form of torture — and that is when your spirits dip.

Not wanting the opportunity to slip, Bheem sings and stirs a revolution. This also happens to be the turning point for Rama, but that does not surface organically. The final 15 minutes with exhilarating action sequences showing Lord Rama destroying his enemies with his bow and arrows, seems more like a comic-book rendition.

While there is a patriotic streak to Rama’s tale, Ram Charan’s actions are so obligatory that it is impossible to be emotionally attached to him. On the other hand, Jr NTR, as the little girl’s saviour, is endearing. Alia Bhatt, as Sita, has hardly anything to offer.

Ajay Devgn as Venkat, Rama’s father, the policeman-turned-revolutionary mouthing instructions in English, “Load, Aim, Attack”, sounds preposterous, despite his intense demeanour and sincere performance. Shriya Sharan, as his wife, has nothing much to do in the film.

Olivia Morris as Jenny is passable. The only one to get your goat is Alison Doody. She very effectively plays her part as the obnoxious Lady Buxton, who demands to see Bheem on his knees and on not seeing enough blood, offers a special whip to make him apologise.

The film is mounted with ace production values. The CGI images seamlessly merge with live-action frames, but their quality varies from good to mediocre.

Rajamouli opens up about Ram Charan’s scariest introductory shot

The ‘Baahubali’ director said, “That adrenaline rush when 1,000 people gang up against one guy, is emoted with such a great effort”…reports Asian Lite News

It is difficult to compare S.S. Rajamouli to other directors when it comes to writing goosebump-inducing introductions for his heroes.

Now that ‘RRR’ will hit the screens in a couple of days, Rajamouli opens up about Ram Charan’s introductory shot in the ready-to-release movie ‘RRR’.

Rajamouli, along with NTR and Ram Charan at the iconic Howrah Bridge for the promotions on Wednesday, had spoken about shooting for a monumental shot in the movie.

“Ram Charan’s intro was one of the scariest shots in ‘RRR’. It has people as many as 1,000 marching towards Ram Charan, ready to attack him. That shot was so high-voltage, just to imagine”, Rajamouli explained.

The ‘Baahubali’ director said, “That adrenaline rush when 1,000 people gang up against one guy, is emoted with such a great effort”.

Rajamouli continued, “I was scared during the shot, as Ram Charan wasn’t visible in the dust and among 1,000 people. But, thank goodness, he completed the shot unscathed”, Rajamouli recalls.

On the other hand, NTR’s intro is expected to leave everyone on a high adrenaline rush, as it has an emotional connection as well.

‘RRR’ will release on March 25 across the world in multiple languages.
