Ashwin Explains Why Rohit Stands Out

Sharing the experience of the day, Ashwin talked about Rohit Sharma on his YouTube channel and said ‘there’s something in him that makes him a leader….reports Asian Lite News

Veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has revealed the support he got from skipper Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid when he had to fly back home due to a medical emergency in the family during the third Test at Rajkot.

Ashwin had to withdraw from the second Test after the second day’s play because of a family medical emergency and missed the entire day three, with the statement of his overnight withdrawal from the match. Ashwin had picked his 500th Test wicket in the form of England opener Zak Crawley on Day Two of the third Test in Rajkot becoming the second fastest to the milestone.

However, Ashwin rejoined the squad on Day 4 of the third Test after being unavailable for the third day. Sharing the experience of the day, Ashwin talked about Rohit Sharma on his YouTube channel and said ‘there’s something in him that makes him a leader.’

“When I got the news about my mother, Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid came to my room and arranged a charter flight at 9:30 pm. I have played under many captains but there’s something in him that makes him a leader,” Ashwin said on his YT channel. “Rohit has got a good heart, someone with five IPL titles, God doesn’t give it easy – he should get something bigger than all that, which God will give him, In such a selfish society, a man who thinks about someone else’s well-being is a rarity,” he added.

Ashwin, who debuted in Tests in November 2011 against the West Indies, became the 14th Indian player to play 100 Test matches for India in the fifth Test at Dharamshala.

The veteran off-spinner also became just the second bowler after Muttiah Muralitharan to achieve 500 wickets in less than 100 Test matches.

Ashwin Gears Up for 100th Test

During the fifth and final Test against England in Dharamshala, starting from March 7, Ashwin will be playing his 100th match in the longer format of the game….reports Asian Lite News

As Indian spin maestro Ravichandran Ashwin gears up to play his 100th Test match, he revealed that “I didn’t enjoy my success as much as he should have” as he goes back to himself after every tour to become a better player.

During the fifth and final Test against England in Dharamshala, starting from March 7, Ashwin will be playing his 100th match in the longer format of the game.

In the third Test of the ongoing series in Rajkot, Ashwin became only the ninth and second Indian bowler after Anil Kumble to clinch 500 Test wickets joining the elite club of bowlers such as Muthiah Muralitharan, Shane Warne, James Anderson, Stuart Broad, Kumble, Glenn McGrath, Courtney Walsh and Nathan Lyon

In addition, he broke the 350-wicket barrier in home Tests and surpassed Kumble to become India’s top wicket-taker. Ashwin has claimed 507 wickets in 99 Test matches, 156 wickets in 116 ODIs, and 72 wickets in 65 T20Is.

Ahead of his momentous occasion, Ashwin was in conversation with Kumble on JioCinema titled Spin Maestros. When asked if things don’t go right or if they go right, whom do you fall back on? Ashwin replied: “I go back to one person and it’s very stressful for that person, and that’s me.”

“Because I think cricket is one of the greatest self-thought sports. And if you’re ruthless and very critical about yourself, I think it will give you the truth staring at your face. There are enough and more critics in India who will tell you, 10 of them will tell you the wrong things, but they’re definitely critical. But 10 of them will also tell you the right things,” he said.

“So, like I always maintain, my biggest pain has been the fact that I don’t enjoy my success as much as I should have. But, that has also helped me become a better cricketer. I have constantly looked for things to improve and I have made sure that I am very uncomfortable with who I am on a particular day. And then I get back to the drawing board and focus on what else can I do to bring more to the table.

“For example, Steven Smith has got a hundred against me, how do I nab him, or Joe Root has made a hundred, how do I nab him. So constantly that thought initiates a new action and eventually it has worked for me over the years, so I am comfortably seated there,” Ashwin added.

Ashwin cuts short Anderson’s stint

Ashwin, 36, first became the No.1-ranked Test bowler in 2015, and has returned to the top spot on several occasions since then…reports Asian Lite News

India’s ace off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has moved to the top spot in the latest ICC Men’s Test Bowling Rankings, ending veteran England pacer James Anderson’s stay at the number one spot.

Ashwin claimed the top spot after taking six wickets in his most recent performance, in India’s emphatic victory over Australia in the second Test at New Delhi. Anderson, on the other hand, drops to second place after England’s stunning one-run loss to New Zealand in the Wellington Test.

Ashwin, 36, first became the No.1-ranked Test bowler in 2015, and has returned to the top spot on several occasions since then. He bagged big wickets in India’s win in New Delhi, removing Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith in the same over of the first innings before returning to pick up Alex Carey for a duck in the first innings.

He was at it again in the second innings, picking up three of the top five while his spin-bowling accomplice, left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja rattled through the rest of the Australian batting order from the other end by picking seven wickets.

Ashwin has an opportunity to extend his latest stay in the No.1 spot through India’s remaining two Tests on home soil in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy series against Australia in Indore and Ahmedabad.

Ashwin, with 864 points, is now the third No.1 Test bowler in as many weeks, after Anderson, now having 859 rating points, replaced Australia captain Pat Cummins at the summit last time around. The trio continue to make up the top three bowlers in the latest rankings.

Jadeja’s 10 wickets in the second Test against Australia at New Delhi also sees him move up the bowling rankings to eighth position, and strengthen his grip on top spot in the ICC Test All-Rounder Rankings – with Ashwin behind him on the second spot.

England’s premier batter Joe Root is the other big mover in the all-rounder rankings, up two spots to eighth. His return to top form in Wellington also sees him leapfrog Australia’s Travis Head and Pakistan captain Babar Azam into third in the ICC Test Batting Rankings.

Australia duo of Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith remain first and second respectively among Test batters. England’s young batter Harry Brook continues his meteoric rise up the batting rankings after another superb century, climbing 15 places to draw level with Virat Kohli in 16th position.

New Zealand’s wicketkeeper-batter Tom Blundell is a new arrival in the top 10 rankings for batters, rising four places to seventh after he helped the Black Caps to their famous follow-on victory by one run in the second Test against England.

Ashwin makes big jump in ICC ranking

Ashwin ensured India wrapped up their stunning victory before tea on the third day…reports Asian Lite News

India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin on Wednesday climbed to the second spot while left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja also moved up to the 16th position in the latest ICC Men’s Test Bowlers Rankings after their superb show against Australia in the opening Test in Nagpur.

The Indian spin twins haunted Australia in the first Test between the two leading nations in the current cycle of the ICC World Test Championship with a combined 15 wickets as hosts won by an innings 132 runs.

Ashwin ensured India wrapped up their stunning victory before tea on the third day, as the veteran off-spinner took 5/37 in the second innings to go with 3/42 earlier in the match. The 36-year-old is now just 21 rating points behind Australia captain Pat Cummins and a return to the No.1 ranking for the first time since 2017.

While Ashwin stepped up in what turned out to be the last session of the Test, Jadeja did the damage on the first day with 5/47 including the prized wickets of Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne. Jadeja then took 2/34 in the second innings to partner with Ashwin as the spin twins quickly dismissed Australia’s top seven batters and left them reeling at 67/7 on the way to being all out for just 91.

On the other hand, emerging West Indies spinner Gudakesh Motie announced himself with 19 wickets in two Tests against Zimbabwe, and has surged 77 places to be ranked 46th after only three Tests.

Meanwhile, India captain Rohit Sharma has been rewarded for his match-defining ton in Nagpur with a rise from 10th to 8th in the ICC Men’s Test Batting Rankings. Rohit came to the crease after Australia were all out for 177 in their first innings, then made the wicket look all-but tame with an assured 120 that set the tone for the rest of the match.

In contrast Australia’s openers David Warner and Usman Khawaja have paid the price for each being dismissed cheaply twice. Warner has fallen six places to 20th after his scores of 1 and 10, while Khawaja has dropped two spots to 10th after only making 1 and 5 in the first Test against India.

India all-rounder Axar Patel has leaped six places to 7th in the ICC Men’s Test All-Rounder Rankings after coming to the crease at a tense 240/7 then hitting a patient 84 for his highest score in Tests.

Kraigg Brathwaite is another Test captain to rise in the batting rankings as the West Indies opener moved four spots to 21st after notching 182 in the first Test against Zimbabwe.

The West Indies skipper’s opening partner Tagenarine Chanderpaul made an even bigger leap, as the 26-year-old climbed 28 spots to 58th after his huge 207 not out in the same Test against Zimbabwe.
