Samsung Q2 profit falls by 95%

It went significantly down from the 14.1 trillion won it reported a year ago…reports Asian Lite News

Samsung Electronics on Thursday reported a 95 per cent fall in second-quarter operating profit, as macroeconomic woes have taken a toll on demand for chips used in electronic gadgets from mobile phones to computers to cars.

The world’s largest memory chip and smartphone maker logged a profit of 668.5 billion won ($525.8 million) for the April-June period, the lowest in 14 years.

It went significantly down from the 14.1 trillion won it reported a year ago, reports Yonhap news agency.

Sales fell 22.3 per cent to 60 trillion won from the previous year’s 77.2 trillion won, the company said in a regulatory filing. Its second-quarter net profit came to 1.72 trillion won, down 84.5 per cent from a year earlier.

Samsung’s Device Solutions division, which oversees its cash cow chip business, made losses of 4.36 trillion won, marking the division’s second consecutive quarter of losses.

In the first quarter, Samsung’s chip division reported an operating loss of 4.6 trillion won, its first financial loss in 14 years, as chip inventories grew significantly amid tapering global demand. Prior to that, the division recorded losses in the first quarter of 2009.

The company’s slight on-quarter improvement in its quarterly profit is due to “its focus on high-bandwidth memory and DDR5 products” with robust demand for AI applications leading to higher-than-guided DRAM shipments, Samsung said in a statement.

“Global demand is expected to gradually recover in the second half of the year which should lead to an improvement in earnings driven by the component business,” it said while warning “continued macroeconomic risks could prove to be a challenge in such recovery in demand.”

The chipmaker has forecast the global chip market will shrink 6 per cent on-year to $563 billion this year, due to a sharp drop in demand, and warned of difficult conditions continuing throughout the year.

There are, however, some positive forecasts that the chip cycle has bottomed out, with the prospect of a surge in demand for memory chips used in artificial intelligence (AI)-powered products and services, including the generative AI chatbot ChatGPT. Samsung Electronics shares have surged more than 25 per cent this year to date on that rosy prospect.

That global memory chip makers have slashed production for the past few months added to that optimistic view. Samsung joined its peers earlier this year to cut production to resolve a persistent supply glut.

Echoing the view, SK hynix, a smaller rival, said on Wednesday the memory chip market is believed to “have entered a recovery phase after bottoming out in the first quarter.”

Late last month, Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra also said the memory market “has passed its trough in revenue, and we expect margins to improve as industry supply-demand balance is gradually restored.”

Samsung keen on Indian climate-tech startups

India has a thriving climate-tech startup community…reports Asian Lite News

As achieving sustainability becomes a daunting task for the governments globally, Samsung on Wednesday said it is seeking innovative ideas from startups in the field, including the bustling Indian climate-tech startup community, to invest in and develop innovative technologies capable of helping the planet.

Samsung has partnered with Extreme Tech Challenge (XTC), the world’s largest startup competition and ecosystem for entrepreneurs addressing global challenges, to launch its own startup competition: the Samsung Climate & Circularity Tech Challenge.

Inhee Chung, Vice President, Corporate Sustainability Center at Samsung, told IANS that there are no boundaries in seeking good ideas and Indian climate-tech startups are most welcome to join the global challenge.

“The challenge is global and anyone can apply. There are no boundaries in terms of geography and Indian startups should come forward and help play a vital role in our global effort to build a sustainable future,” she said during an interaction here.

India has a thriving climate-tech startup community.

Climate-tech startups collectively raised $2.7 billion in funding last year, higher than $855 million they received in 2021, according to data from market research firm Tracxn.

In the January-June period this year, climate-tech startups have already received around $1 billion from investors.

Tech startups are expected to continue increasing innovation and deep-tech adoption, particularly in areas related to SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) that require complex solutions, according to a latest Nasscom report.

Following the announcement of its New Environmental Strategy in September 2022, Samsung has been working closely with startups to invest in and develop innovative technologies capable of helping the planet.

The Samsung Climate and Circularity Tech Challenge is focused on circular economy and climate change, seeking to identify new leading solutions.

The Samsung Climate & Circularity Tech Challenge is open to tech-for-good founders and innovators till July 31 and winning entries will be allocated a presence within Samsung’s exhibition at CES 2024 in Las Vegas in the US.

Finalists will be announced on August 28, ahead of a live final event on September 18, according to the company.

The South Korean giant has committed to a number of climate goals, including achieving net zero by 2050 while maximising resource circularity across the entire product life cycles.

Samsung ignites ‘foldable’ revolution

The foldable smartphones are likely to climb to more than 50 million units by 2025 and over 100 million in annual sales by 2027 globally….reports Asian Lite News

As Samsung prepares to unfold a new era of foldable smartphones next week, industry experts on Sunday said the fifth-generation of devices are expected to drive more display real estate, especially for Galaxy Flip, making its more usable along with better flagship-grade cameras in Folds.

Further, the users would cherish once Samsung makes the Galaxy Fold thinner, lighter with less visible crease in the upcoming series and future iterations.

“Samsung has pioneered this category and its fifth-generation foldables, with more improvements in design, fold engineering and deeper, optimised software-apps partnerships would cement its leadership in terms of both design and experience curve,” Neil Shah, research vice president at Counterpoint Research, told IANS.

The foldable smartphones are likely to climb to more than 50 million units by 2025 and over 100 million in annual sales by 2027 globally.

This is driven by the premiumisation trend and maturing user base, looking to differentiate and do more with their smartphones.

“The Samsung foldable form-factor allows users to achieve both,” said Shah.

In 2023, the global shipments of foldable phones, including flip and fold form factors, are expected to reach 21.4 million units, representing an increase of more than 50 per cent over the 14.2 million units shipped in 2022, according to International Data Corporation (IDC).

The foldable phones remain the one positive talking point in a market that declined more than 11 per cent in 2022.

The recent success and projected development of this segment indicate a healthy demand for this expanding form factor. Despite a slight drop in average selling prices (ASPs), foldables stay in the premium price segments in all regional markets, including India.

As per CyberMedia Research (CMR)’s estimates, foldable smartphone shipments in 2023 are projected to surge 65 per cent year-on-year. Foldables smartphones in the price range of Rs 60,000 to Rs 75,000 are expected to grow five times by 2026 in India.

“With its fifth generation of foldables, Samsung will aim to spark interest amongst mainstream consumers. Samsung’s persistence with the foldable form factor, sustained product innovations  and continuous investments have contributed to a refined foldable experience,” Prabhu Ram, Head – Industry Intelligence Group, CMR, told IANS.

Samsung’s ‘Galaxy Unpacked’ event is set to take place on July 26 in South Korea, during which it would unveil new foldables along with other devices.

“We have distilled the Samsung design philosophy into three Design Identities, each one with you at the centre: our products must be Essential, Innovative, and Harmonious,” according to TM Roh, President and Head of MX Business at Samsung Electronics.

These three ‘design identities’ are ‘exemplified’ by the company’s latest hardware and software ecosystem.

He said that the act of folding and unfolding a smartphone seems simple, but that simplicity users feel is only achieved through a “rigorous focus on what is most essential and intuitive.”

“We’ve raised the standards for foldable smartphone ergonomics,” Roh added.

The company has made the latest foldables slimmer and lighter than the previous generations.

Samsung may integrate ChatGPT into Internet Browser app

The strings hint that ChatGPT integration in the Internet Browser could be an experimental Labs feature. …reports Asian Lite News

Tech giant Samsung could integrate ChatGPT into its Internet Browser app. This information was revealed by the code found in Samsung Internet Browser v22.0.0.54, reports Android Authority.

The strings hint that ChatGPT integration in the Internet Browser could be an experimental Labs feature. The browser is expected to make it easier for users to run queries on ChatGPT without having to visit the ChatGPT website.

“There is a ChatGPT settings placeholder and another one for selecting the ChatGPT model,” the report said. Users will likely be able to utilise ChatGPT to summarise already-existing web pages, which could serve as a useful browser highlight feature.

The report further mentioned that the Samsung Internet Browser app does not currently have a functioning ChatGPT integration. Although there are third-party browser plugins that provide access and functionality to ChatGPT, they cannot be compared to a first-party integration.

Meanwhile, in April this year, the tech giant had released a beta update of its web browser with three new features to improve the application’s usability.

Al Marri visits Samsung HQ in South Korea

The UAE delegation was in Seoul to participate in the eighth UAE-Korea Joint Economic Committee…reports Asian Lite News

Abdullah bin Touq Al Marri, Minister of Economy, led the UAE delegation on a visit to Samsung’s headquarters in the Republic of Korea to learn about the company’s future expansion and investment plans and strengthen its partnership with the UAE market. The Minister was received by Oh-Hyun Kwon, CEO and Vice President of Samsung Electronics.

The UAE delegation was in Seoul to participate in the eighth UAE-Korea Joint Economic Committee aimed at strengthening the existing economic and trade ties and exploring new opportunities for cooperation and investment partnerships with the Korean private sector.

Bin Touq emphasised that thanks to the directives of its wise leadership and the competitiveness of its legislative and economic environment, the UAE has succeeded in establishing a stable and attractive investment climate for the technology and the new economy sectors. The country has today become a major trading and investment hub for several leading global companies, which has further contributed to the growth of its FDI balance, attracting more foreign investors from around the world.

Furthermore, Bin Touq highlighted the measures adopted by the UAE to drive investments and expansion in new economic sectors, acknowledging its importance in building the future economy and achieving sustainable economic and social development. A wide array of future-oriented economic legislation and policies were introduced to this end, most notably the issuance of new laws on cooperatives, family enterprises, business transactions and trade records, in addition to the launch of the Comprehensive Economic Partnerships (CEPA) programme to strengthen its partnership with strategic global markets.

Bin Touq said, “Korean FDI in the UAE continues to grow, totalling AED 8.1 billion (US$2.2 billion) by the beginning of 2021 with a 73 percent growth compared to that of early 2013. Today, the Republic of Korea is one of the top 20 foreign investors in the UAE. Their investments span several economic and trade sectors including insurance, mining, financial services, retail, real estate, transport, energy and technology.”

He added, “Over the past 12 months, 200 new Korean companies have entered the country’s markets, taking the total number of economic licenses obtained by Korean companies operating in the UAE to nearly 1,100, up 22 percent compared to 900 in June 2022.”

During the visit, the UAE Minister was briefed on the progress of work and production at the Samsung headquarters and the modern digital technologies used in the production of electronic chips, screens and smartphones.

Apple, Samsung lead global tab market

While Samsung is facing a tougher race in the foldable segment, more competition also means a bigger and more creative ecosystem and wider market adoption…reports Asian Lite News

For the past few years, Samsung Electronics has been the dominant player in the global foldable smartphone market, where early tech adopters have lugged around small tablet-sized phones in exchange for creative dual screen use.

Now, the South Korean tech giant is facing its most serious competitor yet — Google.

The company unveiled the much-anticipated Pixel Fold, its first foldable smartphone, during its annual developer conference this week. The phone is available for preorder now and will begin shipping next month, Google said.

One of the biggest appeals of the $1,799 Pixel Fold is its thickness. It is slightly slimmer than Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 4: 12.1 millimeters versus 15.8 mm, reports Yonhap news agency.

Fitted with a 7.6-inch screen when open, the phone comes with the largest 4,821 mAh battery to date in a foldable, larger than Samsung’s 4,400 mAh battery. So it is, naturally, slightly heavier than Samsung’s phone: 283 grams versus 263 grams.

While Samsung is facing a tougher race in the foldable segment, more competition also means a bigger and more creative ecosystem and wider market adoption.

For its first foldable phone, Google optimised more than 50 of its own applications for Pixel Fold’s larger display. It also promised to continue its efforts on that front, as part of efforts to encourage other app developers to do the same.

Samsung aims to raise the portion of foldable phones, which were first introduced in 2019, to half of its total smartphone sales by 2025, and to make them another pillar of the company alongside the Galaxy S flagship series and a key category in the premium segment.

According to market researcher Canalys, Samsung accounted for approximately 77 percent of foldable phone shipments worldwide last year.

On September 4 last year, just a few days after the company unveiled its fourth-generation foldable phones, Samsung said a successful foldable phone needed two core elements — a flexible and foldable display and a strong hinge for folding and unfolding operations.

“Foldable phones are not just about the novel form factor and technological advancement,” Choi Won-joon, then head of the flagship product R&D team at Samsung’s mobile experience division, said during a press briefing in Berlin on the sidelines of Europe’s biggest tech show, IFA 2022.

“I believe we should give users unique and valuable experiences that they can’t get from any other smartphone,” he said.

“Making a more compact and lightweight hinge while not compromising its durability was a huge challenge,” he said, adding that Samsung developers were able to eventually come up with a completely new hinge system, called a spiral hinge, after some 20 failed attempts in the span of nearly a year.

Google’s hinge system allows the two screen halves to fold completely, leaving no small gap when closed. Google also said it has the most durable hinge, made of stainless steel, which has been tested up to 200,000 opens and closes.

According to the latest report released in March by the International Data Corporation (IDC), foldable phone shipments are expected to reach 21.4 million units this year, up more than 50 percent from a year ago, as consumers start to embrace the new form factor. By 2027, the figure could reach 48.1 million, it estimated, driven by “a healthy demand for this growing form factor.”

“A 10 percent decline in average selling price helped the market grow 75.5 percent in 2022, as foldable devices became more affordable in numerous markets,” it said, adding, “With new vendors and models joining the race this year, we expect the foldable market to be the one bright spot in 2023 with 50.5 percent growth, while the total smartphone market contracts 1.1 percent.”

Samsung said the release date for the Galaxy Z Fold 5 has yet to be decided.
