Saudi Arabia Hosts 57-Nation Summit, Bringing Together Iran and Arab Leaders

Israel launched its offensive after surprise; cross-border attacks by Hamas left 1,200 people dead and took 230 hostages…reports Asian Lite News

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi met Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in their first public appearance together in 11 years at a summit convened by Saudi Arabia on the Israel Hamas war where Arab and Muslim leaders from 57 nations condemned what they called Israeli “war crimes” in Gaza where innocent Palestinians civilians had lost their lives.

The summit highlights the first trip by an Iranian leader to Saudi Arabia in 11 years after the two countries restored diplomatic relations in March. Raisi shook hands with Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman.

Speaking at the summit, Raisi said that all attendees had gathered there on behalf of the Islamic world to “save the Palestinians”, the media report said.

“We have gathered here today to discuss the focus of the Islamic world, which is the Palestinian cause, where we’ve witnessed the worst crimes in history… today, is a historic day in the heroic defence and support of Al-Aqsa Mosque,” he added.

Opening the summit, the Saudi Crown Prince said the Kingdom “categorically rejects” the war to which Palestinians are being subjected. Saudi Arabia is a close ally of the US sharing interests on oil production and is instrumental in playing a great role in hostage negotiations with Egypt, US, Qatar.

“This summit is being held under exceptional and painful circumstances,” he said.

“We categorically reject this brutal war that our brothers and sisters are being subjected to in Palestine… we renew our demand for an immediate cessation of military operations.”

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas said the US “bears responsibility for the absence of a political solution” as it has the most influence on Israel.

The Saudi Prince’s extraordinary diplomatic push in organising the summit of arab nations and Muslim leaders that drew out the Iranian President for the first time out of Tehran, gathered 57 leaders, who demanded that the UN Security Council take a “decisive and binding decision” to impose a ceasefire and Israel’s expanded ground invasion was hurting innocent civilians, media reports said.

“We condemn the Israeli aggression against the Gaza Strip, the war crimes and the barbaric, brutal and inhumane massacres committed by the colonial occupation government against the Palestinian people, including in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem. We demand it be stopped immediately,” a resolution adopted at summit said.

The summit demanded the entry of humanitarian aid convoys to help relieve the stress of the people remaining in the combat zones in the Gaza enclave, CNN reporting on the summit said.

Some 7,00,000 people have fled the war torn zone including foreign nationals and injured civilians that have crossed the border across Rafah crossing into Egypt.

Large number of civilians still remain in Gaza as the Hamas is preventing their exit to use them as human shields as IDF forces its entry into Gaza city through their expanded ground invasion, media reports said.

“Protection from cycles of violence and wars will not be achieved without ending the Israeli occupation… we hold Israel, the occupying power responsible for the continuation and aggravation of the conflict as a result of its aggression against human rights,” the resolution emphasised.

Israel launched its offensive after surprise; cross-border attacks by Hamas left 1,200 people dead and took 230 hostages.

Iran backs the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah, which has engaged the Jewish nation in daily cross-fire Israel’s northern border with Lebanon. It also backs Yemen’s Houthi rebels, who have been firing missiles towards Israel, and maintains strong ties with Hamas.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad also attended the summit, a further sign of Syria’s rehabilitation among Arab states, following his participation at a regional meeting in May.

In his remarks, Assad criticized normalization agreements between Arab countries and Israel.

“More hands extended by us equals more massacres against us,” he said.

Qatar’s head of state, Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, also criticized the international community for failing to “stop war crimes and massacres” in Gaza.

Qatar has brokered indirect negotiations between Hamas and Israel over the release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas, humanitarian aid into the besieged Gaza strip, as well as a possible ceasefire.

Arab-Islamic summit has rejected justifying Gaza war as Israeli self-defence

Riyadh hosted leaders from Iran, Turkey, Syria, Palestine and other countries to discuss the Israel-Gaza war.

In the opening remarks, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman called for an immediate cessation of military operations in Gaza and the release of all captives and prisoners.

“This is a humanitarian catastrophe that has proved the failure of the international community and the UN Security Council to put an end to Israel’s gross violations of international humanitarian laws, and prove the dual standards adopted by the world,” he said.

India, Saudi Boost Ties with Food, Pharma Cooperation

The project which will consist of multimodal network including rail and waterways is said to be gamechanger in facilitating trade and other economic activities…reports Mahua Venkatesh

Enhancing trade and investments in the area of food and drugs will be the next focus for India and Saudi Arabia as the two nations shift gears in cementing ties. Saudi Food and Drug Authority’s (SFDA), CEO Hisham bin Saad Aljadhey, who participated in the World Food India Conference 2023 in New Delhi, met Union Minister Piyush Goyal to discuss ways to increase imports of Indian drugs and food items into the Kingdom. Aljadhey has had a packed schedule in New Delhi.

The official held discussions on the quality and safety of medicines with the director of the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO), besides meeting a host of companies which deal in food, pharmaceutical products and medical devices to get a better picture on the challenges faced by them in investing in the Kingdom.

India and Saudi Arabia– one of India’s key export markets for pharmaceutical products– have deepened economic and cultural ties in the last few years.

While Saudi Arabia is critical for India’s energy requirements, food security is Riyadh’s thrust.

By 2030, the Kingdom, home to 2.8 million Indians, is hoping to have 12 million visitors from India.

With growing ties, the two nations are now focused on boosting multimodal connectivity.

The proposed India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) Project, signed at the G20 Summit in New Delhi, holds significant geopolitical and economic implications for India and the Gulf region.

The project which will consist of multimodal network including rail and waterways is said to be gamechanger in facilitating trade and other economic activities.

Recently, Saudi Arabia’s King Abdulaziz Port, commonly known as Dammam Port, was added to the to India Gulf Express Freight Service route connecting with India’s Nhava Sheva, Mundra and Mangalore, an exercise that will boost trade in the region. The port is already a part of India- Saudi-Iraq service route started by the Singapore operated Bengal Tiger Line. Later this year, the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) is slated to start a liner service from Saudi Arabia’s Jeddah Islamic Port which will connect Mundra and Nhava Sheva in India.

“Connecting ports and a shared thrust on developing and leveraging the economies between the Gulf and India will go a long way,” a foreign policy watcher told India Narrative.

In July, Saudi Arabia based Muslim World League Secretary General Mohammad bin Abdulkarim al-Issa visited New Delhi. Addressing a large gathering at the India Islamic Cultural Centre, he spoke of India’s unity. He also underlined how the Muslim community in the country had a sense of national pride. “They are proud that they are Indian nationals and they are proud of their Constitution,” he said.

Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman undertook a state visit to India just after the G20 summit in New Delhi.

Last month, Goyal was in Saudi Arabia to participate in the seventh edition of Future Investment Initiative (FII) in Riyadh.

Saudi Arabia is one of India’s most important strategic partners. The trade between the two countries reached an all-time high of $52.75 billion in FY 2022-23. Sources said that India is now planning to hold a track 1.5 dialogue with the six member Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries later this year at a time when New Delhi is looking to ink a free trade agreement at the earliest with the GCC bloc, headquartered in Riyadh.

India’s role in enhancing Saudi Arabia’s digital infrastructure and economy will also be critical as the Kingdom lays the Vision 2030 aiming to increase non-oil GDP to 50 per cent.

But not just economic and trade integration, India and Saudi Arabia are also connecting culturally.

Saudi FM discusses Gaza with Egypt, Jordan and Morocco counterparts

The minister spoke about ways to intensify joint action to stop the military escalation and forced displacement of the Gazan population….reports Asian Lite News

Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan on Saturday discussed the Gaza escalation with his Egyptian, Jordanian and Moroccan counterparts during separate phone calls.

The minister spoke about ways to intensify joint action to stop the military escalation and forced displacement of the Gazan population.

He called for the international community to play its role in lifting the siege on Gaza, and for the Israeli occupation to adhere to international humanitarian law, including allowing food and relief supplies to reach the enclave.

Saudi Defence Minister to visit White House

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia’s Defence Minister Khalid bin Salman Al Saud is expected to visit the White House on Monday for talks with officials in US President Joe Biden’s administration, The Times of Israel reported citing American news website Axios.

The meeting comes amid fears that the Israel-Hamas war could expand into a regional war.

The Saudis on Saturday said that “any ground operation by Israel would threaten the lives of Palestinian civilians and result in inhumane dangers,” according to a Saudi Foreign Ministry statement, The Times of Israel reported.

According to Axios, bin Salman will meet with White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan, Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, Secretary of State Tony Blinken as well as several senators.

In the weeks before the war, Saudi Arabia had spoken of progress in US-led diplomacy to normalise relations with Israel.

In a phone call earlier this week, Biden and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman agreed to eventually “build on” the US-brokered negotiations that had been underway to normalise Israel-Saudi ties.

Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Saturday said that the second stage of the war against Hamas started with the entrance of more ground forces into Gaza on Friday night, The Times of Israel reported.

He said that Israel’s goal is to “defeat the murderous enemy and to ensure our existence in our land.

His statement comes after the Israel Defence Forces chief said that the military is carrying out ground operations in the Gaza Strip at present which serve to achieve all the war’s objectives, The Times of Israel reported.

Netanyahu said that the soldiers are part of a legacy of Jewish warriors that he stressed goes back 3000 years. He said that they have one goal, “To defeat the murderous enemy, and to ensure our existence in our land.”

While addressing a press conference in Tel Aviv, he stressed that Israel’s war aims are clear – “destruction of Hamas’s military and governing capabilities; and returning the hostages home.”

He said that the decision to start the ground incursion was made unanimously by the war cabinet and the security cabinet, according to The Times of Israel report.

He stated, “Our commanders and soldiers fighting in enemy territory know that the nation and the national leadership stand behind them.” He said that the soldiers he has met in the field are determined to make Hamas pay for its actions on October 7.

Netanyahu said, “They are determined to eradicate this evil from the world, for our existence and, I add, for all of humanity.” He said, “We always said, ‘Never Again’. Never Again’ is now.” (ANI)

Investors and fashion industry stakeholders convened in New York City for a roadshow hosted by the Saudi Fashion Commission. The event served as a platform to discuss Saudi Arabia’s burgeoning fashion ecosystem and investment opportunities within it. During the roadshow, strategic partnerships were announced, with consumer-focused private equity firm Turmeric Capital making investments in two Saudi-founded fashion brands: elevated streetwear brand 1886 and ethical luxury label Abadia. These agreements mark the first international investments in Saudi fashion brands and will involve cash incentives from Turmeric Capital and support services from the Fashion Commission.

The collaboration between Turmeric Capital and the two brands is complemented by a Memorandum of Understanding between the private equity firm and the Fashion Commission. This partnership aims to create an ecosystem that supports the growth of local small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the fashion industry with high scalability potential. Both organizations will share resources and expertise to foster the development of globally competitive brands rooted in Saudi culture.

Burak Cakmak, CEO of the Saudi Fashion Commission, expressed the Commission’s commitment to supporting the Saudi fashion sector’s growth and its contribution to diversifying the Saudi economy. He highlighted the significance of securing international investment for Saudi brands.

Ravi Thakran, Chairman of Turmeric Capital, commended the collaboration with the Saudi Fashion Commission and noted the similarities between the momentum in Saudi Arabia today and the economic transformation he observed in China during the early 2000s.

The roadshow featured keynotes by HRH Princess Reema bint Bandar Al Saud, Ambassador to the United States, Saudi Arabia, as well as panel sessions attended by industry experts. It brought together fashion investors, luxury goods companies, designers, and sustainable manufacturing experts, aiming to build on and accelerate the progress made in attracting foreign investment.

The Saudi Fashion Commission’s roadshow in New York coincides with Riyadh Fashion Week, scheduled to take place from October 20 to 23. The inaugural event will exclusively focus on showcasing domestic talent, celebrating local creatives, and promoting sustainable craftsmanship.

Saudi-Israel Normalisation Getting ‘Closer’

Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have both voiced optimism that a “historic” deal to establish diplomatic ties between Israel and Saudi Arabia could be “within reach”….reports Asian Lite News

A normalisation deal with Israel is growing closer, according to Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia H.R.H. Mohammed bin Salman.

The crown prince, in an interview with the Fox News, said “every day we get closer” toward the Kingdom normalising relations with Israel.

“For us, the Palestinian issue is very important. We need to solve that part,” the crown prince said when asked what it would take to get a normalisation agreement.

“We got to see where we go. We hope that will reach a place, that it will ease the life of the Palestinians, gets Israel as a player in the Middle East,” the report quoted him as saying.

When asked if negotiations between the Kingdom and Israel had been suspended, the crown prince said: “No, that is not true.”

If the Biden administration brokered an agreement between Saudi Arabia and Israel, he said it would be the largest agreement since the end of the Cold War.

Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has voiced optimism that a “historic” deal to establish diplomatic ties between Israel and Saudi Arabia could be “within reach”.

Netanyahu’s comments came after he met US President Joe Biden in New York on the sidelines of the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly, Xinhua news agency reported, citing a statement from the Prime Minister’s office on Wednesday.

It was the first meeting between the two leaders since Netanyahu’s return to office in December 2022.

The Biden administration has been working to broker a deal to normalize relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia.

Netanyahu told Biden that “we can forge a historic peace between Israel and Saudi Arabia”.

He added that “such a peace would go a long way first to advance the end of the Arab-Israeli conflict, achieve reconciliation between the Islamic world and the Jewish state, and advance a genuine peace between Israel and the Palestinians. This is something within our reach”, according to the statement.

Earlier in September, Israel’s National Security Council Director Tzachi Hanegbi said his country and the Palestinian Authority have held direct talks as part of Israel’s efforts to normalize ties with Saudi Arabia.

Both Riyadh and Washington have emphasized in recent months that any US-brokered agreement between Israel and Saudi Arabia would require positive developments toward a resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Meanwhile, Netanyahu and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan discussed efforts to reach a normalisation agreement between Israel and Saudi Arabia among other regional and international issues.

This comes as the second such meeting between Erdogan and an Israeli prime minister since 2008. Last year, he met with former Prime Minister Yair Lapid.

Netanyahu told Erdogan at the start of their meeting: “Our ties are growing stronger”.

Netanyahu thanked Erdogan for the cooperation between the two countries’ security services, including the thwarting of attempts by Iran to attack Israelis in Istanbul. The two leaders agreed to arrange official visits to Israel and Turkey soon.

Meanwhile, Erdogan is interested in arranging a trip to Israel as soon as possible to pray at Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa Mosque, Channel 12 news reported, without citing a source. The prayer would mark the 100-year anniversary of the Turkish Republic, founded on October 29, 1923.

According to the Turkish readout of Tuesday’s meeting, the leaders discussed developments in Israeli-Palestinian relations. It also said that Erdogan urged cooperation in energy, technology, innovation, artificial intelligence and cybersecurity.

Turkey’s foreign minister, energy minister, and intelligence chief were also present for the meeting.

The Turkish President tweeted pictures of the sit-down, expressing hope that “our consultations will be beneficial for our country and the region.”

Signs of improved ties were also evident in Erdogan’s address to the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, as per The Times of Israel.

Erdogan, in contrast to previous years, refrained from condemning Israel and offered only a few words of support for the Palestinians, mentioning them almost as an aside in his speech.

“In order for peace to ring in the Middle East, the Palestinian-Israeli conflict should be brought to an eventual solution,” he said. “We will continue to support the Palestinian people and their struggle for legitimate rights under international law,” he said.

“Without a Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders “it is difficult for Israel to find the peace and security it seeks in that part of the world,” he said.

“We will continue to pursue respect for the historic status of Jerusalem,” he added. (with inputs from agencies)
